As we open entries for the 2023 APATA National Awards Program we welcome the chance to speak with this year's APATA Performing Arts Teacher of the Year – Amanda Waddell – Head of Faculty for the Arts at John Paul College, Daisy Hill, QLD. With a twenty-two-year career teaching the performing arts, Amanda understands the benefits of arts-based learning. Her journey began as a dance student with Broadway dreams, falling in love with the art of teaching, and now leading the arts program at her former alma mater John Paul College. Amanda's story weaves itself into the very fabric of APATA educators who love the performing arts and have found themselves thriving, guiding young people through their learning journeys. A strong advocate for the arts in her schools past and present, Amanda is not shy about standing up for the programs and curriculum that her students care about. Her passions for teaching and arts education advocacy are deeply intertwined. The day she hangs up her teacher hat, you can bet we'll see her lending a voice to the cause of having performing arts recognised as a vital part of our schools. For Amanda, life is one big performing arts lesson, and she is continually inspired to learn and connect to the world through the arts. We welcome Amanda to our cohort of APATA Award Alumni and celebrate her ongoing journey as a teacher and leader in performing arts education. Principals are worried there will be fewer people willing to be on school boards of trustees, after a board was charged with the death of a student who drowned during a school trip. The Hamilton school is charged with exposing an individual to risk of harm, under Health and Safety at Work legislation. John Paul College principal Patrick Walsh spoke to Susie Ferguson.

Ministry of Education figures show more than 60,000 students are classified as chronically absent, missing at least three days of school every fortnight. Almost 40 percent of pupils are not going to school regularly. The National Party's Education spokesperson Paul Goldsmith is calling the situation "a truancy crisis". But the service providers contracted by the Ministry of Education to help return children to school say they are underfunded, with the $9.7 million allocated annually only reaching 20,000 students. The government has announced it will review the service, with the aim to have a new model in place by the start of 2022. Principals want truancy funding returned to schools - as it was before an overhaul in 2013 - and for the right to hire their own truancy officers who know and understand their communities. Kathryn speaks with the principal of John Paul College in Rotorua Patrick Walsh, the principal of Porirua College Ragne Maxwell and Solomon Ah-Young, an attendance officer in South Auckland.

Taj Pabari is a 17-year-old high school student attending Brisbane’s John Paul College who has absolutely no aspiration study at university. But he’s also chief executive of his own tech start-up, Fiftysix Creations, and spends his free time between tennis, martial arts, and travelling. And in today’s Australia, when more young people than ever before have enrolled at university, Pabari said more effort needs to go into helping them decide whether or not higher education is really for them. This begins with reforming the role of careers advisors and school counsellors, he said. “Wouldn’t it be great if [school] counsellors asked: ‘what are your passions, your hopes for the future, what do you love doing?” Pabari told a roundtable hosted by multinational education publisher Pearson. “At the moment, any career advice tends to be based solely on job prospects. The whole idea of [school] counselling needs to be redefined and expanded.” Pearson recently sponsored the No Mind Left Behind report from the McKell Institute. Among the recommendations was reforming school career-guidance services and more collaboration between industry and university. David Barnett, managing director of Pearson Asia-Pacific, said Pabari’s story should be a wake-up call for universities.

Meet this week awesome studentpreneur: Taj Pabari 15 years old, high school student at John Paul College and entrepreneur at Fiftysix, Brisbane, Australia.  Wrap up: Each studentpreneur's story is different and what works for some people doesn't for others, however I'd like to point out of few things in Taj 's journey that are similar to the studentpreneurs I have talked to: Very early on, at the age of 11, Taj saw an opportunity in the blogging industry and was not scared to reach out to big manufacturers. He never lost that ability to reach out to people, which helped him for his other venture. Entrepreneurship competitions such as Startup Weekend helped him meet his next co-funder and increased his network of mentors and persons of interest. He took his networking to the next level when building up his Linkedin profile and met a lot of investors and people happy to help this way. Don’t forget that people love to help young entrepreneurs, so if you put yourself on Linkedin, they will be able to find you! His failure re: importing from China is a very common one, so be careful when doing it. Finally, Taj stresses the importance to be involved in competitions and entrepreneurship programs such as the Foundation of Young Australians, so do like Taj and contact http://www.fya.org.au/ if you are in Australia or find similar programs in your country. Feel free to send me the name of the programs you found and I’ll post them on the Studentpreneur.com.au website.   U to support U: Schools should have “Communication Path”, to help students learn how to communicate, how to do public speaking.
