Adjuvants are a critical component of vaccines, but they can be an overlooked factor when putting together a vaccine program. The three roles of adjuvants serve in vaccines are creating a danger signal for the host, help the immune system recognize the antigen and to protect the antigen. Historically, there has been some skepticism around vaccinating young calves early due to the presence of maternal antibodies. Our guests discuss what role vaccines serve in a calf program while recognizing the importance of colostral immunity and the purpose it serves. Adjuvants can serve an important role in young calves to help with a vaccine-induced immune response. Our guests discuss the METASTIM adjuvant, how it differs from other adjuvants, and the role it plays in boosting immunity even in the face of maternal antibodies. Veterinarians play a critical role in developing vaccine programs for their clients' herds. This not only includes ensuring that the appropriate vaccines are selected for the herd, but also making sure that nutrition, specifically vitamin and mineral nutrition, is appropriate, stress is minimized, and vaccine storage and administration is correct. During the closing years of his practice, he became interested in the area of psychological trauma and worked with survivors in individual and group settings. He has been retired from active practice for about 15 years and spends his time engaged in self-discovery on the Sufi Path and social-change activities with his church. He has lived as a computer scientist, psychologist, running and growing businesses, and helping entrepreneurs, hospitals, and healthcare providers. Mid-life Brian had a partially debilitating nerve injury and soon after met a true Vedanta teacher who spent 30+ years in India and trained under Swami Chimayananda, Sawmi Dayananda, and others. Joel David Lesses is President and Executive Director of Education Training Center, Inc. and his work experience is in education, psychology, and counseling for people marginalized by trauma, addiction, and psychological distress. He is deeply vested in addressing the effects of mental health distress and its marginalization including, incarceration, homelessness, and institutionalization. Joel is dedicated to reframing mental health distress as a potential spiritual marker and existential opportunity. He holds dual Master of Science degrees from University at Buffalo in Rehabilitation Counseling and Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Epidemiology. Henry Cretella, M.D. studied and practiced Tibetan Buddhism for several years along with training in martial arts. He then immersed himself in the more universal Sufism of Inayat Khan, an Indian mystic, for close to twenty years. He functioned as a senior teacher in the Inayati Order and the Sufi Healing Order before pursuing his independent practice and study of mysticism. He now integrates what he has learned and experienced over these many years. He graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School and completed his psychiatric training at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. His professional career spanned over 40 years as a general and child and adolescent psychiatrist and included teaching, administration, clinical practice and consultation in the greater Rochester and western NY areas. This, along with his spiritual and especially mystical interests lead him to certification as a mind body practitioner through the Center for Mind Body Medicine and Dr. James Gordon. He retired several years ago from active psychiatric practice, but continues to incorporate what he has learned into his spiritual practices and offerings.
Joelle Taylor, MD, FACOG is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is an active member of several leading scientific societies, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI), the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Dr. Taylor earned her medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2006. As a recipient of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholar Award, she dedicated a year to research at the National Institutes of Health during her medical training. She went on to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest University in 2010, followed by a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia—home to the first IVF baby in the United States. Throughout her career, Dr. Taylor has been recognized with multiple research grants, has published extensively, and has presented her work at national conferences. Outside of her professional pursuits, Dr. Taylor lives in Jupiter with her family and their Australian Labradoodle. She enjoys weightlifting, yoga, playing pickleball, and cooking for family and friends.
Katelyn joined Navigate under unusual circumstances: she was trying to figure out the transition into her assistant professor role, after having been a doctoral student and a full-time researcher at the same institution. Over the summer of 2024, they conducted research in Brown University's Computational Neuroscience cohort through their Leadership Alliance SR-EIP. Clinically, reduced efficacy and/or increased side effects observed in some patients can be attributed to the gut microbiome, including narrow therapeutic index drugs such as digoxin. You will come away with an appreciation for scientific creativity and the sometimes unexpected benefits of doing an experiment that everyone thinks is going to fail. We speculate on how much there is to learn about the possible interactions between the gut microbiome and drugs for obesity, including GLP1 agonists. Finally, we talk about some practical considerations in terms of studying bacterial drug metabolism in vitro. The episode explores the following: How important is the gut microbiome in terms of drug metabolism? What do we know about the balance between control of the microbiome by the host and control of the host by the microbiome? What are some of the challenges of studying gut bacterial drug metabolism in vitro? Dr. Turnbaugh and his research group use interdisciplinary approaches in preclinical models and human cohorts to study how the gut microbiome influences nutrition and pharmacology. He received a B.A. in Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology from Whitman College and a Ph.D. in Microbial Genetics and Genomics from Washington University in Saint Louis. From 2010-2014 he was a Bauer Fellow in the FAS Center for Systems Biology at Harvard University, where he established an independent research group before starting his faculty position at the University of California, San Francisco. On Saturday agriculture regulators will begin testing milk produced in Minnesota for H5N1 – the virus commonly known as avian influenza or bird flu. The disease has forced poultry farmers to kill about 9 million birds in Minnesota since 2022. Earlier in January, a turkey grower in Dakota County lost nearly 80,000 birds. The situation is also driving up the price of eggs. In spring 2024, the disease showed up in cows. Minnesota had its first case in dairy cattle in June 2024 and saw nine total outbreaks that year. No humans in the state have gotten sick with H5N1, but there have been 67 confirmed cases in humans elsewhere in the country. Public health and veterinary experts say this problem is not going away. They're pointing out what they say are missteps in the response so far. In this episode, I am joined by Nicholas Silvestri, Professor of Neurology at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, where he is also Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs. He is board-certified in neurology, neuromuscular medicine, and electrodiagnostic medicine.Over the past several years, Nicholas Silvestri's research interests have included myasthenia gravis and inflammatory neuropathies, and he has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and textbooks.Our conversation covers the full spectrum of myasthenia gravis – from its pathology and pathogenesis to its clinical features, investigations and treatments. He explains such tricky areas of myasthenia gravis, such as why the antibody levels do not correlate with clinical severity of the disease, and why the disease frequently starts in the ocular muscles.We also explored such themes as why anti MUSK myasthenia gravis favours Black people and those living around the equator, and why steroid treatment may worsen myasthenic symptoms.Nicholas Silvestri also discussed the newer and more effective treatments of refractory myasthenia gravis, and how he manages the different facets of the disease.

This interview introduces Helen Taylor who has a master's degree in Genomic and Regenerative Medicine in Biomedical Science. Helen made the switch to carnivore lifestyle in February 2024. Burgess is a graduate of Emory University School of Dentistry. He received his M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, completed a one year General Practice Residency and a two year General Dentistry Residency. Currently Dr. Burgess is the assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Director of the Graduate Biomaterials Program. He has served as a military consultant in general dentistry to the Air Force Surgeon General. He received certification from the American Board of Dentistry and is a diplomat of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry. He is a member of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, The Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the American and International Association for Dental Research, and the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Dr. Burgess is a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and the American College of Dentists. A prolific researcher, Dr. Burgess has authored more than 400 articles, abstracts and textbook chapters and currently receives research funding from federal and industry sources. He is a reviewer for four dental journals and is a member of the advisory board for the Dental Advisor and the Editorial Board for Inside Dentistry. He is a past chair of the Biomaterials Section of the American Association for Dental Schools and has served on the Executive Board for the American Association for Dental Research. Currently he is a member of the American Dental Associationâs Council on Scientific Affairs and a member of two ADA committees for specification development for materials and devices. He is active in clinical evaluations of dental materials and is an investigator on clinical protocols evaluating adhesives, ceramic restoratives, fluoride releasing materials, low shrinkage posterior composites and impression materials. Dr. Burgess lectures extensively nationally and internationally and has presented more than 900 continuing education courses. Dr. Burgess is married to a wonderful lady, Patricia. They now reside in Birmingham, AL.
