This week, stories of democracy, dreams, and things happening in and out of the ballot box. Elections Elsewhere by Phoebe Adler-Ryan Have you ever wondered how elections operate in other corners around the world? In our first story, ATB takes you on a ‘election tour’ of different countries as our volunteers - from China, Vietnam, some with connections to the US - gather to talk about what voting is like in their country. Can you vote in your country? What does voting mean to you? Featuring Lindsey Vassalo, Patrick McKenzie, Ray Vo and Sue. Counting the Vote by Grace Gooda Next story brings you into the Australian ballot box. In this story, we step inside election day through the eyes of an AEC worker - where impartiality, integrity, and counting replace the usual political buzz. From securing ballot bins to missing out on the ‘democracy sausage’, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at the quiet work that keeps Australia's democracy ticking. Welcome to a day in the life of a ballot counter. That story was produced by Grace Gooda in partnership with the Centre for Advancing Journalism and The Yarn from Melbourne University. Young Yarners by Micah Kickett Our third story explores the Young Yarners Program, a new initiative tackling voter disengagement in First Nations communities. From Parliament House workshops to local projects back home, young leaders from the program are building knowledge, breaking down barriers, and making sure Indigenous voices are heard loud and clear at the ballot box. That story was produced by Micah Kickett for The Wire. Young Matters by Ruby Perryman In this story, we hear from a young voter navigating life on Centrelink, housing insecurity, and the growing feeling that dreams like home ownership are slipping away. As the election approaches, it's not grand promises that shape her vote - it’s the urgent need for real support in an anxious, uncertain future. That story was produced by Ruby Perryman in partnership with the Centre for Advancing Journalism and The Yarn, from Melbourne University. Hope for the future by Catarina Fraga Matos and Kwame Slusher Confusion, curiosity, excitement to frustration. Young Australians paint a vivid palette of emotions as they face their first vote. Whether it’s dreaming of climate action, fairness, or just finally being heard, these young Australian voters have big hopes, even if the path to the ballot box is still a little messy. Hear them out. It's a question that echoes through conversations among frustrated Australians, especially younger generations who find themselves priced out of the housing market: Is this all a Ponzi scheme? The surge in property prices has not only locked out many potential first-time home buyers but has also sparked a fiery debate about the sustainability and ethics of our housing economy, likening our housing markets to a speculative Ponzi scheme. Is this really true? That's what Brett Warren and I discuss in this episode of The Michael Yardney Podcast. Takeaways The housing market is often misunderstood by younger generations. Owner-occupiers make up a significant portion of the market. Ponzi schemes involve fraudulent investment practices, unlike the housing market. Speculation can lead to market instability, but owner-occupiers provide stability to our hosuing markets. Understanding market fundamentals is essential for successful investing. The current market is not in a bubble, but cyclical fluctuations exist. Investing should be approached with a long-term perspective. Having a strategic plan is vital for navigating the property market. Demographics play a key role in shaping market trends. In March 1941, 40,000 Australian and New Zealand troops were rushed to Greece in a desperate attempt to support the Greeks against the looming threat of a German attack. Although the operation was ultimately doomed to fail, the Aussies and Kiwis managed to hold up the German advance long enough to evacuate thousands to Crete, where Hitler then set his sights. Joining me today is Craig Collie, author of ‘Where the Flaming Hell Are We? The Story of Young Australians and New Zealanders Fighting the Nazis in Greece and Crete'. We'll be delving into these often-overlooked, disastrous operations in the Mediterranean. I want to extend a big thank you to David Phillipson from the History Guild, who suggested our guest today and connected me with Craig.  In S 5 E 6 I am delighted to introduce Dr Linny Kimly Phuong.  Dr Phuong is  Founder & Director of The Water Well Project. She is a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Physician at the Royal Children's Hospital, Austin Health, Cabrini Health and Murdoch Children's Research Institute. She is also a PhD candidate studying invasive pneumococcal disease in children. Prior to medicine, Linny was a qualified pharmacist and also holds a Master of Public Health. Linny has received recognition for her work with awards including the Australian Medical Association- Doctor in Training of the Year Award (2017), Victorian Premier's Volunteer Champions' Award- Leadership category (2016), Suncorp Hidden Local Heroes Finalist (2016) and Young Australian of the Year- Victorian State Finalist (2013).     In this episode Linny tells me the story of  The Water Well Project from its grass root foundations to  award-winning charity that improves the health and wellbeing of communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds by improving their health literacy.  The organisation's  core activity is the provision of free, interactive, community-based, health education sessions delivered by volunteer healthcare professionals across Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.         The Water Well Project utilises a community-centric model by working closely with refugee and migrant support organisations. Sessions are delivered upon requests from community groups and co-designed alongside community partners. This means that sessions are tailored to the needs of each community group and delivered in a culturally safe manner.       In this conversation Linny relates her own story driving her purpose driven mission to improve health literacy, healthcare access and culturally safe care for migrants, refugees asylum seeker seekers. We hear her fascinating founder story, which is undoubtedly one of innovation and entrepreneurship combined with a for-purpose vision, and her journey, lessons and the serendipity that has contributed along the way to becoming an award winning not for profit organisation. Crucially if you are a health care professional looking for a rewarding skilled volunteering opportunity you can learn more about the work of their programs and how to get involved. Daniel is best known as the founder of Street Side Medics, a mobile medical clinic delivering healthcare services to the homeless. In 2022, Daniel was named Young Australian of The Year in recognition of the service he delivers through Street Side Medics to the most vulnerable members of our community. He truly is an angel on earth and we were so honoured to have him in the studio with us.  In this conversation we hear the simple story of how Daniel came to the assistance of a homeless man who was having a seizure outside Waterloo train station in London, where Daniel was studying medicine at the time, and how that led Daniel to become passionate about understanding the issues that homeless people face and developing a solution to their lack of access to healthcare. It was through this genuine need and Daniel's hard work and determination that Street Side Medics was born.  We hear about the vital services that Street Side Medics provide to the homeless all across Australia, and how it has grown from a simple service that Daniel started with his mate to the point they're now at with a wait list of 18 months to become a volunteer and 600 volunteers currently registered.  Daniel also shares honestly about how hard it is to find balance in life and the fact that he doesn't have it yet. He talks about the importance of empathy and how much difference it can make to acknowledge a homeless person's struggle, be there and listen to their story, and treat them with the respect and dignity that they deserve.  We are so inspired by the work that Daniel is doing, the positive impact he's having on thousands of lives and the way he shows us all how to be kinder, more empathetic humans. Faced with soaring house prices and cost of living pressures, they are leaving the family home, getting married, having children and buying their own home much later than previous generations did, if at all. And political scientists say these trends are feeding a ‘fundamental shift' in voting patterns.
