As the clock winds down to Christmas, thousands are coming through the gates at Shannon Airport to spend the festive season with their loved ones. Well over 100,000 people are due to touch down at the Clare base in the coming days in its busiest year since 2009. It's over 60 years since Frank Sinatra sang the words "it's nice to go travelling but it's so much nicer to come home", and those lines are ringing true for the multitudes pouring through the gates of Shannon Airport this week. No fewer than 115,000 people are expected to land in Shannon over the Christmas period in a year when for the time since 2009, over two million passengers have passed through the facility. Airport Director Niall Kearns says all the stops have been pulled out to make those returning home feel welcome this Christmas. As passengers come through the arrivals doors, they're greeted by the melodic tones of the St Aidan's National School choir. Its principal Jane O'Leary says it's a great opportunity for the budding singers to take the stage and be heard. Each person patiently standing by has a different story to tell - with someone seeing their loved ones for the first time in years while others have had a slightly more bearable wait. As the arrivals doors open, those on the final leg of their voyage realise they'll be home for Christmas, not in their dreams, but in reality.
First Sunday of Advent - Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Gillian writes: I am the Chaplain and Head of Religious and Values Education at St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School in Brisbane, a position I have held for the past 10 years. Prior to that I have been a parish priest, worked in a cathedral, assisted a Primate and most importantly, been mum to 4 amazing children. I am an Anglican priest with tertiary qualifications in Japanese, Law and Theology. I am a lifelong Anglican with a keen interest in the future shape of the church and in women's issues within the church and beyond. I think working as a school chaplain is the best job in the church, because it brings me into contact with such a variety of people, many of whom have no or little knowledge of the church or Christianity, but who are keenly interested in living a meaningful life. I am also a vowed member of the Society of the Sacred Advent, an Anglican religious order of women, and I am committed to the ongoing contribution of religious orders to the life of the Anglican Church and its schools. I am curious about what religious life might look like in the 21st century, and what treasures it still has to offer. My other interests include gardening, baking, quilting, and my little border terriers who make life so much richer.

Prayer of St Aidan Leave me alone with God as much as may be. As the tide draws the waters close in upon the shore, Make me an island, set apart, alone with you, God, holy to you. Then with the turning of the tide prepare me to carry your presence to the busy world beyond, the world that rushes in on me till the waters come again and fold me back to you. Amen. Luke 14:1-14 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

The Feast of St. Aidan (August 31) ... Liz Flowers shares Aidan's story, how we chose St. Aidan as our patron saint and prayers offered for the way ahead.
The opening of Europe by St. Paul’s apostolic mission leads us to our patron, St. Aidan. We have a deep affinity with St. Aidan and his apostolic work in the northern region of England. Early Celtic Christianity was alive throughout the British Isles for centuries before St. Augustine of Canterbury came ashore in 597 A.D. Early in the formation of our community, we sensed a calling to honor St. Aidan as our patron. The theme of this talk is inspired from the simple word and deed of Jesus in Mark 7: Ephphatha! Be Opened!
Fr. Gregory talks about one of Britain's own- St. Chad, a saint taught by their own St Aidan in his monastic school at Lindisfarne and belonging with his own three brothers to a missionary team that worked in Northumbria and in the north-western part of the ancient kingdom of Mercia in the generation after St Aidan's death.
