E377 – "Inner Voice: A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan Zeine." In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Hamed Farmand, whose mother was incarcerated for five years when he was six, and is the founder and president of Children of Imprisoned Parents International (COIPI). He studied the fundamentals of psychology at NOVA College and, under the mentorship of Dr. Shervin Assari, gained a deep understanding of the psychological impact of parental incarceration on children. Hamed serves as a board member of the International Coalition for Children with Incarcerated Parents (INCCIP) and is a member of the Global Prison Nursery Network, where he shares his research on children living with their mothers in Iranian prisons. Hamed has earned several prestigious certifications, including “Child Protection: Children's Rights in Theory and Practice” from Harvard University, a MicroMasters in “Social Work, Practice, Policy, and Research” from the University of Michigan, and a certificate in “Resilience in Children Exposed to Trauma, Disaster, and War” from the University of Minnesota. He is also certified in “Advocating Social Justice and Change” from the University of Adelaide. Dr. and Hamed discussed the profound impact of parental incarceration on children, drawing from Hamed's personal experience and research. Hamed shared how his mother's five-year imprisonment shaped his life and emphasized the need for society, caregivers, and parents to better support children in similar situations. He highlighted the trauma, stigma, and lack of resources that these children face and advocated for open, honest conversations to build trust and resilience. They addressed the importance of providing mental health support for incarcerated individuals and their families, particularly focusing on the role of education, access to services, and reducing stigma. Hamed discussed systemic issues like poverty and gender inequality, noting the link between incarceration and socio-economic challenges. He also emphasized the need for community involvement in supporting these children and preventing trauma from being passed down to future generations. The conversation touched on coping mechanisms children develop due to parental absence, the role of community support, and how dissociation or overachievement can be common reactions to their circumstances. Both speakers stressed the importance of addressing trauma, providing mentorship, and promoting resilience in children affected by parental incarceration. Hamed concluded by discussing his organization's efforts in education, services, and research to support these children globally. 20 Best California Mental Health Podcasts https://podcasts.feedspot.com/california_mental_health_podcasts/ Check out my website: www.FoojanZeine.com, www.AwarenessIntegration.com, www.Foojan.com Remember to Subscribe, Listen, Review, and Share! “With grief, for me personally, the main thing is letting myself feel it and not trying to pretend it hasn't happened…Rather than hiding it, I give myself permission to deal with it. (Wycombe student) What we know for sure is that at some point the girls in our life will grieve a loss in their family, in their school or church community, in their world. It might be a break up with a first true love, a move away from friends, the loss of an adored pet, a parents' divorce, the loss of a safe relationship–or worse, the death of a loved one, and might likely be a loss of a relationship that sustained her through thick and thin. She will be heartbroken. Walking the path of sorrow and sadness with her can break our hearts, too. Every type of grief is different and every one of us grieves differently; there is no grief handbook, but that is not a reason to dodge this important conversation. Listen in as Angela Terpstra, the Head of School at Bishop Strachan School in Canada, shares her compelling story of leading her school community through several significant losses. It is in the times of deepest loss that we lean heaviest into the communities that know and support us. Angela's story inspires even as it reminds us why connecting a girl to her grief, and supporting her as she walks “with” grief can help her shape and reframe the many and varied emotions that will flow from that loss. “We need to work with our young people to help them understand what consent means.” (Elizabeth Zeigler) Unfortunately, the statistics tell us why having the hard conversations with girls about consent and violations of personal space is vital: 1 in 5 middle school students have experienced unwanted sexual contact; 1 in 20 girls have changed schools due to sexual harrassment; 1 in 4 women have experienced some form of sexual violence before college. The reality is that by the time students finish their education, 81% will have experienced some type of sexual harassment. This is a conversation that we may not want to have, but girls NEED us to have it. This episode of The Connected Girl coaches adults how to be proactive, and it also offers guidance as to what to do if the girl in your life is feeling unsafe due to some sort of harassment. Join host Trudy Hall as she learns from Elizabeth Zeigler, the former Executive Director of I Have The Right To, a nonprofit dedicated to being a hub for students, parents and educators as they search for resources and support to address sexual harrassment and sexual assault. Elizabeth, also the founder of Claremont, a coaching firm, is an experienced CEO who is committed to ensuring respectful cultures She believes that no one needs to be facing serious challenges without a network of support. This conversation is all about the criticality of girls respecting themselves as they confront challenges to the things that are most important to them—their feelings of safety, personal boundaries and their bodies. Hard and real for sure. “What we know is that strong, powerful relationships with trusted adults are a protective factor for girls at all levels of development.” (Dr. Tori Cordiano) Girls love to be connected; they are all about relationships, connections in both real and symbolic ways with the world and everything in it. Girls have relationships with peers, with food, with their bodies, with nature, with music, with exercise, with their social media..with their voices. For girls, the proactive management of all these connections is critical to their sense of wellbeing. It is through healthy relationships that girls feel connected to all that makes them whole. As importantly, the reverse of this is also true: when girls are disconnected from their peers, from their bodies, from caring adults, from nature, from sleep they feel afloat, untethered, vulnerable, less than. In this first episode of The Connected Girls series, you are invited into a conversation that explores what we know for sure about the power of healthy–and unhealthy–connections in the lives of the girls. To launch this important journey, join Dr. Tori Cordiano, a consulting psychologist and the director of research at Laurel School's Center for Research on Girls in Cleveland, Ohio, and host Trudy Hall as they unpack critical terms and demystify the language and the realities of connection and disconnection for girls. This episode lays the groundwork for a six episode series that has been curated with girls at the center and includes the voices of girls themselves sharing their insights about the connections in their lives. On this edition of Peace Talks Radio, we'll take a look at transitional justice through Truth and Reconciliation Commissions. We've looked at the topic of transitional justice in a 2021 episode, but now look at different examples of Commissions around the globe. From the most famous historical example of the Commission established to investigate abuses under the Apartheid era in South Africa, we'll look at the evolution of the tool in countries like the Gambia and Colombia following conflict and transitions of power. A new trend is emerging of western democratic states establishing Truth and Reconciliation Commissions to look at historical abuses against indigenous and minority populations. Australia, Canada and Greenland have all concluded such Commissions in recent years. But we'll take a deep dive into the Commission process in Norway, which is completing in 2023. From the mid-1800s to late in the 20th century, Norway forced assimilation of the indigenous Sámi population through an official “Norwegianization” policy. Traditionally reindeer herders across the Nordic region, the Sámi were forced to give up their own culture and language, particularly through a system of residential schools for Sámi children. Now, Norway is confronting the harms under that policy and its lasting legacy. Danielle Preiss talks with three experts who study transitional justice processes and their evolution including Dr. Elin Skaar, research professor at the Christian Michelsen Institute in Norway, Ereshnee Naidu-Silverman, Program Director of the Global Transitional Justice Initiative at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, and Dr. Gloria Ayee, a political scientist and lecturer at Harvard University.

Quote: “I think that I have learned to listen more to others. I learn more then. And everyone deserves to have their voice heard.” -6th grade girl— Imagine this: a world in which our children become so dependent on gadgets and screens that it is challenging for them to speak with other humans. Not likely, right? Yet many educators will tell you that moment has already arrived. They believe it is time to start intentionally teaching the critical skills of conversation and discourse. In this episode, we have the opportunity to learn why this matters now, how discussion skills can be taught for both the classroom setting and the dinner table, and some basic strategies that parents and educators can employ to create the healthy space for girls of all ages to hone communication skills at home, in school and for life. In this “conversation about conversation,” host Trudy Hall learns from educators deeply knowledgeable about teaching discussion skills. Liza Garonzik, a former classroom teacher, is the founder of R.E.A.L. Discussion, an organization committed to the idea that discussion is the key to humanity, and, as important, discussion skills can be segmented into teachable elements. Joining her is Callie Hammond, a girls school educator and Global Action Research Fellow, a program hosted by the International Coalition of Girls Schools, bringing her recent research findings and experience with teaching these skills to girls. Offering both theory and practical skills for every adult who engages with girls, Callie and Liza remind us that girls are eager, interested and delighted to engage—if we offer them the tools that give them the confidence to do so. Congress was packed Wednesday, as three witnesses testified about their first-hand encounters with Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, also known as UFO, which they say is being suppressed by the government. Both Republicans and Democrats call on the Pentagon to come clean. Gary Heseltine is with us to assess the hearing on Capitol Hill. Mr. Heseltine is a former member of the British Royal Air Force and vice president of the International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing heated questions from Republican lawmakers over his handling of the southern border. What did lawmakers say, and what was his response? The Alabama senator holding up military promotions says he won't back down before Congress goes into a month-long recess. "Parents' focus should be on the people, the program, the place that puts a smile on their daughter's face and a sparkle in the eye of the girl sitting right in front of them.” — Liz Schmitt If you have been wondering about your daughter's education lately, this episode is just for you. Perhaps she is ready to transition to the next grade level, perhaps your family has a move on the horizon and she will need to change her school, or perhaps you have a parental sense that she might need a very different school environment. Or maybe you just want to ensure she is already being well served by her current school. This conversation offers wisdom and guidance on each part of this exploratory journey—and be assured: It is definitely a journey! Finding the right school is a matter of both head and heart. Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we get introduced to Lord Fancyface! Picking up immediately where the Season 5 finale left off, Diane informs Ron that she is pregnant. Overwhelmed with joy and love, Ron proposes to Diane. Both wanting as small and quick a wedding as possible, they head to the 4th floor of City Hall to get married immediately. They pick up Leslie and April on their way, and with them as witnesses, Ron and Diane are pronounced husband and wife. One month later, Leslie is STILL being attacked by the "Recall Knope" campaign. Leslie attempts to fight back, but so far nothing she does is creating awareness or making a difference. Trying to think outside the box, April recently nominated Leslie for an award from the International Coalition of Women in Government, and announces some much needed good news to the gang: Leslie was one of five winners, and the awards ceremony is being held in London! One month later ... Leslie and April are in London for the awards ceremony, with Ben, Andy, and Ron also present. As Leslie prepares for the ceremony, she discovers her personal London pictures are being used by those from the "Recall Knope" campaign to insinuate she'd rather be in Europe than work through her problems in Pawnee. With the help of Ron, Leslie works past her initial instinct to fly back to Pawnee immediately. Meanwhile, Ben and Andy are in London to meet with a wealthy potential benefactor for the Sweetums Foundation. Ben and Andy meet with Lord Edgar Covington, a wealthy man from a distinguished family with lots of money and property. Ben attempts to discuss terms with Lord Covington, but it quickly becomes clear he is easily distracted and is interested in childish, trivial things ... much like Andy. In fact, Andy and Lord Covington get along very, VERY well, both having similar work ethics and mannerisms. When Ben finally gets the chance to put forward his proposal, Covington admits he has no idea what he is doing. He started the charity to do something good with his family's money but he has heard hundreds of charity pitches and isn't sure who to choose. Also meanwhile, we learn from Ron that Diane originally wanted this London trip to be their honeymoon, but when a huge wave of morning sickness took her out of the equation, she stayed home and insisted Ron go take pictures for her and try to enjoy himself. Ron grumpily agrees, but is not having a great time there. Despite this, he manages to support Leslie, and even tries to mentor her when she finds out Pawnee is still raking her over the coals at home. Leslie also gives Ron what she considers a "proper" wedding gift ... an itinerary taking him to a mystery location that she swears he'll be glad he went to. Back in Pawnee, Tom is peeved at Tommy's Closet being established across the street from Rent-A-Swag, and asks Donna to help him find out information on the unknown owner. Finding only an address, Tom drives there to find Ann and Chris entering the building - what the what? Tom races in after them and finds the pair in a room in the middle of a sonogram. At this point, Tom realizes two very important things: [a] Ann is pregnant, and [b] the person trying to ruin his business is their doctor, Dr. Saperstein ... the father of both Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa. Dr. Saperstein tells Tom he is only doing it to get back at him for ruining his children's lives. Even after hearing this, Tom doesn't really get Dr. Saperstein's reasoning for going after him. Finally, Ann and Chris are together, and doing great - their relationship is better than it ever has been. As things progress, we (and Tom) end up learning one more very interesting fact ... Ann is pregnant! They're trying to keep this just their secret for now, but they're getting a little antsy to let everyone know ... As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Will Leslie's speech go off without a hitch, or could she encounter some turbulence? Can Andy convince Lord Covington to choose Ben's proposal? Does Ron take pictures of London like Diane asked him to? What is the REAL reason Dr. Saperstein is going so hard after Tom? Will Ann and Chris decide to start telling people? Can Leslie's award change how the citizens of Pawnee see her, or will they continue to be "pee-pee-heads"? Is there anything Andy can otherwise do to help clinch the deal with Lord Fancyface? Is Ron able to talk Leslie down out of the crazy tree? Can Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa help to diffuse the situation between Tom and their father? Can Ann and Chris predict how Leslie will react when she hears their news? Does Leslie's award change how SHE feels, or does she need a boost from another source? Who exactly came up with the nickname "Lord Fancyface"? Where exactly is Leslie's itinerary sending Ron? Does Tom close Rent-A-Swag, or will he continue to fight? Is all this making Ann and Chris feel overwhelmed, and if so, how do they deal with it? Loyal podcast viewers, here we go ... Season 6 is here! Can it live up to the legacy Season 5 left us with? Tune in and find out! Many thanks to our amazing sponsor, 'Flags R Us'!
