Deliberate practice is all about focusing on specific skills, breaking them down into smaller components, and practicing them over and over again until they become second nature. By doing this, sales reps can learn to respond authentically to customers, rather than relying on a script.Before going into practice or a sales call, it's crucial to prepare your mind. Jonathan suggests 3 powerful things to get your mind right.We also talked about how sales leaders can create psychological safety for their teams. Psychological safety is all about creating an environment where team members feel comfortable taking risks and speaking up with new ideas or concerns. This can lead to greater innovation and higher performance. To create psychological safety, leaders should encourage open communication, active listening, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. [4:17] - If Jonathan wanted to become the seller he wanted to be, he knew he needed to actually practice. He reached out to friends to practice together. [7:32] - By breaking down the sales conversation into bite sized chunks, Jordana couldn't unsee the difference and the impact on her own self confidence. [10:01] - In many sales environments, sellers are required to follow a script strictly. [11:20] - There are different types of scripts and the extent to which you plan it out dictates how scripted and rehearsed you come across to clients. [12:20] - Practice does not always mean memorization and scripts. [13:50] - The most powerful selling skills are human skills. [16:07] - The skill sets that women naturally bring to sales don't typically get celebrated, but they are strong human skills that translate to sales strongly. [17:07] - You can train your curiosity to ask questions about more impactful skills. [19:30] - You can see the parallels between sales conversations and other life scenarios. [21:32] - We want to know a customer's problems to help them solve them, but we are strangers. We need to be grateful that they want to share. [24:21] - The three steps are to welcome, empathize, and ask questions to understand. [25:19] - An objection could actually be the thing that pushes the conversation forward. [27:29] - Your emotional state is so important. [30:26] - Connect with the emotion that you want to convey in a conversation and say it outloud. Visualize the outcome. [33:10] - We have a lot more leeway in conversations and can make humbling disclaimers. [35:20] - You can be fragile, robust, or antifragile in your responses. Jordana Zeldin and Jonathan Mahan are the Co-Founders of The Practice Lab. There is a noticeable gap between what salespeople intellectually understand and what they could actually pull off in the wild. In fact, sellers are overtrained this way, yet are under-practiced in the skills that truly matter. Salespeople should develop their human and selling skills through practice, much like how athletes and musicians perfect their craft. This space allows sellers to screw up, double back, and ask for feedback. Practicing human skills trains sellers to ask insightful questions and handle objections more effectively, ultimately helping the buyer make a decision. HIGHLIGHT QUOTES Salespeople should practice different types of questions like martial artists practice moves - Jonathan: "There's no knowing which move you're gonna call on during any match, but you know that whatever move you need, it's well rehearsed, it is gonna be available to you. So similarly with salespeople, they can practice different types of questions, and... when you get that tickle that says, Ooh, we should ask more about the impacts here, you'll have no difficulty crafting up a question in the moment." The key difference between roleplay and practice - Jordana: "The goal of the role play is to impress your leadership team to show them how good you are, how smooth you are, how worthy you are. However, that is not how athletes and musicians approach their practice. Practice is a completely different pace, rhythm. There are completely different objectives in practice." Restructuring the priority of practice within organizations - Jonathan: "More time and money should be spent on practice than training, just because you can take a one-hour training and it could take you 10 hours to implement it, so there should definitely be... let's say 50% of time and emphasis on practice, 25% is on learning, and then the remaining 25% of time and budget should be spent on kind of the coaching." It takes about 10,000 hours of dedicated practice to master a skill. How often do you actually practice your sales craft? No, really… I don't mean the hours you spend at work, and it's a stretch to even count webinars and podcasts. I mean dedicated practice. Making sales calls, writing email copy, talking shop… That's the normal stuff that you end up getting credit for. What about role playing?  What about listening back to your sales call recordings? What about working with a colleague to intentionally sharpen your skills? You probably don't do too much of that. That's uncomfortable. That's the kind of thing that makes prospecting look like an attractive alternative! My guest today on the podcast is Jordana Zeldin. I've long said that there's only about a 5% difference between mediocrity and superstardom. In Season 2 of the Rethink The Way You Sell Podcast, we're going to dig into that 5% and identify what separates top performing sales pros from the rest.  As you dig a little deeper into that 5%, what you're going to understand is the difference between “those who know” and “those who do.” Interestingly (but not surprisingly), what separates top performers from average sellers doesn't seem to have anything to do with selling skills. Top performers don't know more, they just execute relentlessly on the most important things. The difference, then, comes down to the seller's ability to overcome the obstacles that get in the way of performing these tasks. You already know enough. That's not what's getting in your way. There are the seven intangible characteristics of top salespeople  They are proud to be in sales They are purpose-driven They treat selling as a career, not just a job They take ownership of their outcomes They begin with the end in mind They create an environment to buy They keep their swagger I'm going to dive deep into each one of these characteristics, and along the way, you're going to hear from a few of my friends, like Andy Paul, Tara Horstmeyer, Larry Levine, Luigi Prestinenzi, Jordana Zeldin, Mike Hook, Andy Racic, Camille Clemons, DeJuan Brown, and Liz Wendling.
