This week's guest is Rob Humphreys. Originally from New Mexico, Rob currently lives in Los Angeles and has quite the impressive list of professional credits having played and/or recorded with Billy Ray Cyrus, Celine Dion, Karon O, Kacey Musgraves, Leonard Cohen, Theo Katzman, Elle King, Scary Pockets and MANY MORE. I absolutely love his playing. He's just a cool damn dude. Maybe someday I can be rad like him. Anyway…I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shape Rob Humphreys into the drummer he is today. This week on Comes a Time, the one and only George Porter Jr. joins Oteil and Mike for an enriching conversation about his riveting life in music. You'll hear about why George is proud of the record that he made over quarantine and how the process of making it was different than what he's used to, George's indoctrination into the world of the Grateful Dead and why his version of “Eyes of the World” is Oteil's favorite, as well as what it was like to grow up as a musician in New Orleans. You'll also hear Oteil and George dive deep into the low end as they discuss pocket vs. chops for bassists, the story of how George got sober and never looked back, and why we have a donut shop and George's father to thank for his masterfully funky bass playing.  George Porter Jr. founded The Meters in 1965 alongside Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters carved their own place in history with syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans' deep African musical roots. They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter's heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George's reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Porter will forever be New Orleans music royalty, and he calls the city home to this day. This week marks the tenth anniversary of the end of the infamous Spring Tour 1997. I had the good fortune of seeing six of these shows and look back on this time in my life with fondness and more than a little nostalgia. Along with classic shows at the Vic and Aragon in Chicago, I braved more than a little sleepiness to attend the end of the tour stop in St. Paul, MN. This taught me an important lesson; if there is nothing stopping you but a lack of sleep, GO!Alot of ground has been covered from this time period (April - May 1997) in our podcasts this past year so I tried to steer away from the more obvious highlights from some of the classic shows - but I couldn't resist the Jingo Jam from 4/27/97! Sections of music like the Sleepy Monkey, Tie Your Shoes combo from 5/8/97, the Stop Go > Wondering from 4/27/97, B of D > Goin Out West from 5/10/97 and many others should be sought out and listened to. Do yourself a favor and find any show from April and May 1997 and I dare you to find a dog in the bunch. The band was in fine form and each and every one is played with effortless high energy. Here's how it goes down this week:April 27, 1997Burlington, VTJingo Jam >Space WranglerMay 3, 1997Pelham, ALJust Kissed My Baby (with Night People rap)May 7, 1997Louisville, KYBowlegged WomanWalk OnMay 9, 1997Chicago, ILLittle KinAin't No UseMay 8, 1997Chicago, ILShe Caught the KatyWe would love to hear from you, so please click 'Comment' below and let us know what you think or if there is something you' like to hear.DOWNLOAD the cast here (right click to save to hard drive):Everyday Companion Podcast #48Click here to subscribe through iTunes.

City of New Orleans Special(aka the GREAT cover song review)This is by no means a true 'best of' New Orleans - but enjoy some selections from the Crescent City.July 28, 1994 House of Blues, New Orleans, LAI Walk on Guilded SplintersNovermber 22, 1993 Tipitina's, New Orleans, LAJust Kissed My BabyOctober 28, 2000 Kiefer Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, LAJunco Partner >Mardi Gras in New OrleansLawyers, Guns and MoneyRed Hot Mama >SharonTroubleSoul KitchenI found a great interview where JoJo talks about this version of Junco > Mardi Gras HEREThe 10/28/00 show fetaures some great Panic moments. JB's flub of Junco Partner leads to a spirited Mardi Gras jam; yet another example of how the band's philosophy of improvisation and allowing songs to be in the moment can create some unexpected magic. The bust outs of Lawyers Guns and Money, Trouble and Soul Kitchen almost overshadow the fine Red Hot Mama > Sharon. I find myself thinking of this show when I think of New Orleans - probably because of the Mardi Gras jam.May the spirit of the music of New Orleans and, more importantly, the entire gulf coast live forever.
