I was lucky enough to record a podcast with John in August of 2021 and this week's podcast is with Tom McGuane [44:36], author of 20 highly regarded novels, screenplays, collections of short stories, and what is in my opinion the finest book of fly-fishing essays ever written, The Longest Silence. Most people who interview Tom want to talk about his crazy days in Key West in the 1970s, , fishing for tarpon with Jim Harrison, Guy de la Valdene, Jimmy Buffet, and other notable characters. However, in the podcast we talk about what he is doing now—his fascination with small-stream trout fishing, why he would rather wade than fish from a boat, his opinion on guides who yell at their clients, and how to grow old gracefully and still continue to fish with a fly rod. It was a real honor to chat with him and I know you'll enjoy this very special podcast. In the Fly Box this week, we have some wonderful and thought-provoking questions and tips form listeners, including: What is that white rod that Pete Kutzer uses in your casting videos? Is there a written history of Orvis? What is the best reel lubricant, and how should I maintain my cork drag surface? Can dumbbell eyes damage fly rods? If so, what should I do to keep flies tied with them from hitting my rod? Do trout eat those little black and brown stoneflies that hatch during the winter and early spring? Can you explain when I would use weighted flies vs. split shot vs. poly leaders when fishing nymphs? Can you compare the relative advantages of the 10 1/2-foot 3-weight and the 11-foot 3-weight Blackout rod? I saw people catching fish on nymphs. I tried exactly the same patterns and didn't catch anything. Why? I have a reel that takes a 9-weight line. Can I get an extra spool and put it on my 7-weight rod?

This week comedian Dan Levy joins Megan, Chris, and Kurt. They love their kids, BUT… why are the biggest parenting critics in your life the ones you've known the longest and also used to share a bathroom with? Family, it's like riding a bike; you never forget how to do it and when you fall your siblings will always be there to laugh at you. After a very long family vacation, Megan realizes that all that old baggage and habits one develops with their siblings and parents through the years don't magically go away when you become a parent. Nope, It's still there lurking behind every parenting decision you make until it blows up like the Volcano Nachos at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville Restaurant. And Dan Levy talks about how his younger brother, with much less parenting experience than him, can't stop giving unsolicited parenting advice. So this Thanksgiving, you may not be able to choose your family, but you can certainly choose to double the shots in the Last Mango In Paris Margherita to help cope. Happy Thanksgiving Buttheads! And remember, you can call our hotline and leave us questions, comments, or your own funny, totally anonymous “Circle Time” parenting story at 424-570-KIDS or you can email us at Ilovemykid@wondery.com. Just don't forget to start your story with, “I love my kid, but…” and maybe we'll use yours on air!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Well, as we did a rare thing and dropped a new show on the opening weekend of the month given the highly anticipated release of 'Now And Then' on 2nd November we dropped 227 that weekend and it has performed very well for us! One of our best! Thank you everyone! We took the week off as we flipped schedules and are back this week with a brand new show discussing Paul's recent Musical Collaborations. Paul has participated in 4 recent recordings. He appeared with Dolly Parton (& Ringo) and others on her version of 'Let It Be' on her recent album Rockstar. He appears on Jimmy Buffet's final LP "Equal Strain On All Parts" on a track called 'My Gummy Kicked In'. He wrote and plays on 'Feeling The Sunshine' a song he wrote for Ringo for his latest EP Rewind Forward and lastly contributes bass on a new Rolling Stones song titled 'Bite My Head Off' off their new LP Hackney Diamonds. We rank and give our thoughts on these performances and how they stack up against each other and also show a bit of our new Red/Blue/Now And Then Merch and discuss the upcoming appearances for Ken Womack's new book on Mal Evans. What do you think of Paul's contributions on these latest songs? Thanks as always for supporting us 2Legs faithful! Tom and Andy
Brandon Erickson from O'keefe O'Brien Lysson Attorneys shared some insight about the estate of Jimmy Buffet and choices made by the late singer that allows an easy transfer of wealth while the estate continues to generate income after death. If you can't tell yet, I am a Buck Storm fan. He has been on the podcast twice before and you are going to enjoy today's conversation. Buck's books would make fabulous gifts and stocking stuffers, just saying. He writes all his books to stand alone, but you will notice that some of the same characters pop up from book to book in a particular series. I am looking forward to reading more of Buck's books. Here's a little bit about his book, :Venus Sings the Blues” What if you could change your life and write your own story? What if you could make your dreams come true? To say Bones isn't thrilled with his dead-end job at the Venus Motel would be an understatement. But when you're fifteen with no family, expecting any prospects for your future feels pretty pointless. You just have to roll with the whims of the powers that be. And the motel owner, Calico Foster, can't keep herself afloat, much less rescue a lost kid. A job is all she can offer. Why Jimmy La Roux chooses the Venus to land at when he rolls out of the desert and into the parking lot is more than anyone knows. But with a rattle of Harley pipes and a cloud of dissipating dust, he roars in, fresh from blasting through the cosmos, ready to change all of their lives. Complete with jeans, boots, hair and muttonchops swept back from cosmic winds, and muscles like ropes, he looks like he could take on any sorrow and wrestle it into submission. And he's wielding a magic box that makes anything that goes into it disappear forever… Welcome to the Venus Motel, where a million stars dance above the neon and things are almost never what they seem. With a cast of characters including a blues-playing magician biker, a broken singer running away from her past, a couple of down-and-out crooks, a lovelorn cowboy, and a famous author drowning his demons in a bottle of rum, Venus Sings the Blues is vivid, quirky ride into the desert Southwest. Like all of Buck Storm's stories, it's full of humor and depth, and takes a lyrical look at God's love and his pursuit of man in a style reminiscent of an engaging blend of Jimmy Buffet and Gabriel García Márquez.

In the pursuit of finding contentment, happiness and fulfillment, the image of reclining on a sun-soaked beach, a metaphorical “Margaritaville” often springs to mind. I'm sure many can just hum that tune from the popular song. The allure of a stress-free existence, devoid of worries and work, paints an enticing picture of contentment. However, finding contentment can coexist with an industrious and purpose-driven life, where meaningful activities, purposeful goals and contributions to society play a pivotal role. In fact, the writer of the song “Margaritaville,” Jimmy Buffet, supported many philanthropic causes and developed restaurants, hotels, merchandise and a successful Margaritaville-brand. True contentment is a delicate harmony, a state where one finds peace within themselves without succumbing to stagnation. Contentment should not be an excuse for idleness, complacency or inactivity. Idleness is marked by a lack of initiative and effort and can stunt personal growth and development, preventing one from realizing their full potential. Complacency, on the other hand, is to be overly comfortable or satisfied with the present, often blinding us to the need for adaptation and progress. It's similar to standing still in the sand when the ocean tide comes in with enough power to pull one under. Inactivity, both physically and mentally, can cast a shadow on aspirations and hider the pursuit of dreams. It can also blind one to the threat of danger as we have seen in history. There are risks and dangers in all three of these characteristics of idleness, complacency and inactivity. We will cover some of them here. Burning man 2023 was met with many unexpected challenges. In todays tangent, we talk about this unintended social experiment and how what may be perceived as going wrong, may actually be the signs of something right. Most of us have been a part of something that may have started small and intimate; a cult classic movie, a music group or sub-genre, but when it gained popularity we turned away from it, toting that it, or they "sold out." Jimmy Buffet may be that for some of you, or perhaps you never wanted a "Cheeseburger in Paradise?" A recent gender reveal party turned tragic when the Piper ag plane used crashed and killed the pilot. John, Greg and Todd observe that the plane appeared to be poorly maintained. They share insight into the reasons why these types of commercial planes need special maintenance attention. The flight safety detectives focus on a recent report from the European aviation authority about bogus airplane parts. The report highlights efforts to track down suspected unapproved parts that could have been installed on CFM56 engines on popular airline models including the 737 and A320. Greg shares the details of a 1985 helicopter crash that killed five people and was caused by the use of unapproved parts. John shares stories from his experience, including work on a FAA suspected unapproved parts working group. They conclude that the issue of fraudulent and bogus parts will continue to crop up periodically, requiring ongoing training on proper documentation and paperwork related to parts. They note that the risk is particularly high in places where governmental authorities don't have strong oversight programs. This episode also includes appreciation for Jimmy Buffet, an avid general aviation pilot. Buffet survived two plane crashes and was an advocate for aviation issues. We don't want to say we told you so, but we told you so. From the start, the New York Times and other big media were advocating for the lockdown of schools, but they never once thought of how devastating it could be for the children. Now, just three years later, the New York Times is citing COVID-19 as a source of “chronic absenteeism”, a new student phenomenon. Then in this episode, we explain how California is basically guaranteeing its water shortages forever. You'd think one of the biggest, most successful, technological hubs of the United States would figure out a solution, but nope, CA citizens are continuously stuck in a rut. Moreover, we discuss how famous Irish singer, Róisín Murphy was canceled for stating the obvious, on her private social media account. This results in another example of why you should never apologize to the Trans mob. Last but not least, we tell the tale of Jimmy Buffet and how he made his money by pretending to be the “everyman”. While we may enjoy and relate to his music from time to time, it's clear he had problems with commercialization and the very crowd his music is catered to. Then, we end on a light note, sharing a clip of Ann's stand-up comedy show on the COVID madness. This is an episode you won't want to miss! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ap-scoop/message
