Hey everyone, Oteil here from the Comes A Time podcast, broadcasting from Petaluma, California. This episode is a special one as I'm recording something secret and cool that I can't wait to share with you. Our guest this week is my old friend Elizabeth Lott, who I know from our days at church in Birmingham, Alabama. Elizabeth recently made a significant life change, leaving her position as possibly the first female Baptist pastor in New Orleans. We delve into her journey, her continued faith, and the big questions that led her to this new chapter. Elizabeth and I discuss her remarkable path from being a trailblazer in the church to stepping away due to feeling confined by the institution. Despite her strong belief, she felt the church wasn't aligning with the radical, revolutionary love she felt called to pursue. Our conversation touches on the challenges of breaking away from established norms, her move to Macon, Georgia, and the excitement of new beginnings. Elizabeth's story is one of courage and faith, and I was thrilled to have this deep and heartfelt conversation with her. In this 2 part special of Comes A Time, photographer Rosie McGee shares stories behind her iconic photos of the Grateful Dead and San Francisco music scene in the 1960s. She started taking photos at age 12 and lived with the Dead when they moved to LA in 1966, capturing intimate behind-the-scenes moments. Her photos show the band as fresh-faced kids, like a baby-faced Bob Weir looking similar to Mike's daughter. She has great photos of Pigpen, describing him as very sweet and quiet offstage. Some of Rosie's favorite photos include young Jerry Garcia backstage with a Les Paul goldtop and lamb chops, a whimsical Grace Slick looking elf-like in Central Park, Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane who she knew before the Dead, and a rare candid of Jerry with Owsley "Bear" Stanley which she slyly shot hiding behind a palm frond since he hated being photographed. The photos provide a fascinating look into the vibrant 1960s San Francisco music scene. Rosie reminisces about the early days and characters like Kesey, the Airplane, and more. Her photos capture intimate unguarded moments that show the humanity and bonds between these legendary figures when they were just young creative souls.
