My guest today is dear friend and an ex-colleague, Derrick Mc Court. Derrick and I first met in 2001 when he joined Microsoft in Ireland. Our paths crossed many times and in many ways over the years and it has always been a pleasure to spend time with him. Today he is General Manager of the Customer Success Unit in Microsoft UK and sits on the UK Board. A quick look at his LinkedIn Profile will show the considerable skills he has but for me the most significant thing is that in amongst all the corporate madness he has managed to remain impressively grounded and that comes across in our chat. Derrick has three passions which are key to him keeping his feet on the ground the first of which is his family. He was born in 1969 and grew up in Belfast during ‘The Troubles' which he reflects on in a typically thoughtful and moving way. For the past 15 years home has been in Edinburgh where he lives with his wife and their two boys Conner and Joe. His eldest boy Jamie got married last week and his daughter Lucy lives in London and works in I.T. The second passion, as you will hear is music and at festivals like Download that is shared with Connor and Joe. His final passion is running, and he is well on the way to completing the ‘Big 6' Marathons and getting his ‘Six Star Finisher Medal'. Music and Playlists are clearly an important part of his running regime hence the title of the episode. Derrick's song selections are: 70's I've Got A Feeling The Beatles80's Alive And Kicking Simple Minds90's Paranoid Android Radiohead00's I Predict A Riot Kaiser Chiefs10's X-Ray Visons Clutch20's Mr. Motivator Idles Enjoy
For this episode, we're going back to Pearl Jam's first ever appearance at Fenway Park back in 2016. It's appropriate timing because they'll be playing two shows there to close out the tour in September. While it has all of the baseball references and former Red Sox player appearances, the overarching focal point of this episode will focus on the personal experience that Randy had during this show. Have you ever had a concert blunder that you wish you could take back? Did you ever miss a chunk of the set due to arriving late or other negligence? That's what we're going to talk about here as this show was the one and only time that Randy was not in his seat for the opening song. He'll take you through the whole story and hopefully absolve his demons by the end of the show. ***Please note that our audio for this episode is not up to snuff due to connectivity issues during the recording. It's listenable, but expect some glitches throughout*** Playing in one of MLB's legendary cathedrals, Ed would mention on multiple occasions at this show that playing Fenway was a dream come true. It was a night dedicated to celebrating the big moment, and there were plenty of special guests and special performances to back that up. We get our fair share of rarities at this show, including one of the ultra rare deep cuts in their catalog, Strangest Tribe. Back to back with Into The Wild song Society may consist of the rarest opening to an encore of all-time. We also get two massive covers that hadn't been seen at Pearl Jam shows going back a decade. Bob Dylan protest song, Masters Of War was a massive highlight that hadn't been played in 200 shows prior to this, and I've Got A Feeling brought you back to the early 90s and was played for the first time since 2004. Add in that former Red Sox pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, joined in to play Black and former first baseman Kevin Youkilis brought out a uke, it was jam packed with unforgettable moments. Our Gear Guru segments on this episode will have Javier talking about a delay effect coming from Mike on Masters Of War, and a little bit of Ed talk on guitar during Porch. Jorge Ramirez-Martinez AKA WOWJant AKA Summer Sweat is a writer, editor, director, and producer of short films. Though the Lennon/McCartney partnership really only existed in name by 1969, the two songwriters still knew who the best person was to help complete a half-written tune. As they'd done before on songs like "We Can Work It Out" and "A Day in the Life," each brought an unfinished piece they were able to stick together to make a whole with "I've Got A Feeling," combining Paul's verse idea and John's bridge. It's a song they worked on constantly during their January '69 sessions and was the source of some real touchy moments with George, but it never really took flight until Billy Preston showed up and sprinkled his magic keys on it. Billy's gospel-tinged electric piano provides the perfect call and response in the verse. Paul delivers a powerful top-of-the-range vocal that gets countered by John's more subdued bridge vocal. George's fluid leads throughout combine well with Billy's keys, and Ringo provides a super solid foundation, as always. But in the end, the song doesn't really SAY anything, it's more a performance track than an actual song. Though, I'd give my left toe to write a track like this and have it be someone's 108th favorite song of mine. Joining us this week is Denver-based singer and songwriter Julian Fulco Perron. He's got a couple of incredibly catchy, vibey, funky singles out right now, reminiscent of "Arrow Through Me" era Wings and Bee Gees grooves. And he does it all himself! We talk about being a DIY artist, genre hopping, what would have happened if Billy had joined the band full time, and Julian's great story about attending a Paul show. Follow Julian at his website, Facebook, or Instagram and stream his music wherever you stream groovy tunes! The songs "About Love" and "Burnout, Baby" are featured in this episode. What do you think about "I've Got A Feeling" at #108? Too high? Too low? Or just right? Let us know in the comments on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter! This week we are watching cows get sucked up into tornadoes while we discuss “The Rain King”! We're talking our long-long-awaited arrival in Kansas, whether or not controlling the weather is a federal crime, how much we love the Rain King's vibes, Mulder and Scully gazing at each other, how endearing it is that Mulder has no ability to read social cues, and how messed up it is that this episode is taking jobs away from stunt cows. We make it through half an hour of this episode without a Wizard of Oz reference and then come crashing to the ground, we enjoy some Scully Girl Talk that the message boards were all over, we discuss Kansan skin flaps that allow people to glide through tornadoes, and we bring up David Boreanaz again, because hey. Label: Motown 1104Year: 1967Condition: M-Last Price: $21.00. Not currently available for sale. Here's a beautiful copy of this important single. Besides the classic A side, which as you'll notice makes #37 on Dave Marsh's list of the top 1001 singles ever made, be sure to listen to the flip, which a collector/dealer I respect greatly once opined was the greatest Four Tops side ever released! You may not agree with that assessment, but I think you'll have to admit it's a must-have Tops track! Note: This 45 record comes in a vintage Motown Records factory sleeve. The labels grade a strong EX, with some light ringwear and a small stain on the B label where a sticker was removed. The vinyl looks almost untouched, and the audio sounds pristine Mint! This is technically episode #2 of the podcast originally released on April 30th, 2020. It was unfortunately removed because of copyright infringement. I've learned my lesson not to mess with The Beatles. But I didn't want a gap in my library of podcasts so I've removed the music from this episode and have included Spotify links if you want to follow along and listen to the music. Chances are though if you're as big a Beatles fan as I am you are already familiar with all of these songs. It's not like there is much that is classified as an "underrated" song in their catalogue. One of my favorites from Queen's debut, "Doing All Right" is a surprisingly soft and warm reflection that creates the perfect contrast against the more rock and roll tracks it's surrounded by. I talk the song's jazzier (almost folk-inspired) beginnings with the band Smile, and why I prefer Queen's '73 BBC live recording over the album version. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tater-thoughts/message
¡Bienvenido a los Vinilos de Barbarella! El podcast donde sólo se escucha música en formato de vinilo Hoy tenemos un programa especial con motivo del 50 aniversario de la publicación del duodécimo y último álbum de The Beatles, 'Let It Be'.
