Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Guitarist and songwriter David Grissom is on the show this week! Anyone who knows anything about the guitar knows Grissom is a monster player, and has been a key element of albums for Joe Ely and John Mellencamp, and then with the band Storyville. But what I wasn't really aware of was his extensive list of session work he did here in Nashville during the early 2000's. For a good 10 years or so, Nashville session work was kind of his main thing. He played on huge records for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Lee ann Womack, Montgomery Gentry, Billy Ray Cyrus and Brooks and Dunn. But he also maintained his work on the rootsier side of things, writing for, touring with or playing on records for Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Eliza Gilkyson, Chris Isaak, Rita Coolidge and lots more. So all this to say we had alot to talk about. I wanted to dig into that session scene in the early 2000's and see what was going on at that point. We had a great talk about all the aspects of his career, making some of the classic records he was involved in, how he got into music in the first placxe and his current band and regular gigs around Austin, TX. We also get a little nerdy and talk about his signature Paul Reed Smith guitars closer to the end.You can get all the info on David, his recordings, live albums, and weekly gig at: www.davidgrissom.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts - it really helps get the show heard by more folks! Growing up, he was intimidated by the sheer number of people coming to Nashville to become singers or songwriters. So, he went to college and earned a degree in psychology. After working ten years as a youth minister, Marty decided to change careers. Trouble was, he didn't know what he wanted to be when he grew up. He fumbled around for several years, doing odd jobs and trying to decide on a direction for his life. Finally, a book he read helped him realize that what he REALLY wanted to be was a songwriter. He had run into Gordon Payne, a member of the Crickets, while working one of his odd jobs. Gordon helped him re-write one of his songs and demo it in a Nashville studio. Marty was hooked. He threw caution to the wind, quit the other jobs and began writing full-time. 10 #1 songs and more than 135 cuts later, Marty has become one of the most accomplished writers in Nashville with notable hit singles such as "Fire It Up” by Joe Cocker, “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” by Kenny Chesney, “Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right” and “Let Me Down Easy” by Billy Currington. His songs have been recorded by numerous other artists including: Blake Shelton, George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, The Plain White T's, The Oak Ridge Boys, Don Williams, Johnny Reid, Billy Ray Cyrus and Big & Rich. Marty's self-professed “greatest achievement” in his songwriting career to date was knocking artist Psy (“Gangnam Style”) out of the #1 spot in South Korea and winning “Song of the Year” honors for South Korea and all of Asia with his song “Bounce” recorded by Cho Yong Pil. Marty currently resides in Nashville TN with his wife Candy.  He is a partner and co-founder of SongTown.Com and is a writer for Sail Away Songs. NOTABLE CUTS:“Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right” – Billy Currington  2 Week #1 Single – Platinum Single“Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” – Kenny Chesney  2 Week #1 Single“Let Me Down Easy” – Billy Currington  #1 Single“Fire It Up” – Joe Cocker and Johnny Reid  #1 Single in Canada – Johnny Reid  #1 Single in Germany – Joe Cocker“Bounce” – Cho Yong Pil  #1 Single in South Korea – Asian Song of The Year 2013“Songs Like This” – Carrie Underwood  Double Platinum Album“Cirque Dans La Rue” and “Killer” – The Plain White T's“While You Loved Me” – Rascal Flatts  #7 Single – Double Platinum Album“Could It Be” – Charlie Worsham  #12 Single – Highest Debut Single of 2013“Dirt” – Dean Brody – Top Ten Single – Canada“Immortal” – Saving Jane“Doing It To Country Songs” – Blake Shelton“Did It For The Party” – Big And Rich“Harder” – Steep Canyon Rangers“Bernadine”, “Bohemian” and “Around Like Vinyl” – Songs From The Road Band BRAND RESOURCES:Evergreen Podcast Network - EvergereenPodcasts.comThoughts That Rock – ThoughtsThatRock.comCertified Rock Star - CertifiedRockStar.comBooky Call - https://www.bookycall.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Apple - Apps.Apple.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Google Play - Play.Google.Com Service That Rocks: TCreate Unforgettable Experiences  and Turn Customers into Fans (Jim Knight) - ServiceThatRocksBook.comLeadership That Rocks: Take Your Brand's Culture to Eleven and Amp Up Results (Jim Knight) - LeadershipThatRocksBook.comCulture That Rocks: How to Revolutionize Your Company's Culture (Jim Knight) – CultureThatRocks.comBlack Sheep: Unleash the Extraordinary, Awe-Inspiring, Undiscovered You (Brant Menswar) - FindYourBlackSheep.comRock ‘n Roll With It: Overcoming the Challenge of Change (Brant Menswar) – RocknRollWithIt.comCannonball Kids' cancer – CannonballKidscancer.orgBig Kettle Drum - BigKettleDrum.comSpectacle Photography (Show/Website Photos) – SpectaclePhoto.comJeffrey Todd “JT” Keel (Show Music) - JT Keel

James has become a fixture on the Billboard Country chart with thirteen #1 songs and scores of top 20 singles to his credit. In 2009, Brett achieved the Music Row “Triple Play,” an award for three #1 songs in a single chart year, not once, but twice! These six #1‘s; ‘It's America,' by Rodney Atkins, ‘Out Last Night,' by Kenny Chesney, ‘Cowboy Cassanova,' by Carrie Underwood, ‘Summer Nights,' by Rascal Flatts, ‘The Truth' by Jason Aldean, and ‘The Man I Want To Be' Chris Young earned James ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the second time in October 2010.A native of Oklahoma City, Brett attended Baylor University, where he completed two years of medical school before moving to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country star. In 1995, Brett James was signed to the Arista subsidiary Career Records and subsequently released his self-titled debut album. Career Records was later dissolved in consolidation, and with it, James's recording artist aspirations. Brett persevered as a writer at Patrick Joseph Publishing which fostered the relationships that destined him for success. In the year 2000, James received his first major album cut with the song ‘Love Is A Sweet Thing,' recorded by Faith Hill, followed by a top 20 single ‘You Won't Be Lonely Now,' with Billy Ray Cyrus. It wasn't long before Brett reached the benchmark that all songwriters and artists alike strive for, the coveted #1 song. In April of 2001, then-break-out artist Jessica Andrews landed James his first #1 with the song ‘Who I Am.' He returned to the top of the chart in 2002, this time with country superstar Martina McBride and the song ‘Blessed.'As his chart success continued, Brett appeared on Billboard Magazine's top-ten country songwriters list for five consecutive years, the only writer to do so, and in 2006 reached yet another musical milestone winning ASCAP Songwriter of the Year. In 2007, Brett received the music industry's highest honor winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song ‘Jesus Take The Wheel,' recorded by Carrie Underwood. The list of artists that have recorded songs penned by Brett James resembles a who's who in the country music list but also straddles genre lines into American and world pop music. Some notable pop artists to record James' songs include Kelly Clarkson, Jon Bon Jovi, Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Chicago, and Leona Lewis. Brett has also scored #1 songs in Europe and a worldwide top 5 Latin hit with the song ‘Todo Mi Amor' recorded by Paulina Rubio. Outside the writer's room, Brett's talents have earned production credits that include Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Josh Gracin, and MCA recording artist Kip Moore whose single “Somethin' ‘Bout a Truck” was a breakthrough smash in 2012!https://www.facebook.com/BrettJamesSongswww.GaryScottThomas.com

As told by the late great lead tenor Gordon Stoker, this is the story of the greatest backup group in the history of recorded music and that is undoubtedly the Jordanaires, a gospel group of mostly Tennessee boys, formed in the 1940s, that set the standard for studio vocal groups in the '50s, '60s, '70s, and beyond. In their sixty-five-year career, from 1948 through 2013, the recordings they sang on have sold an estimated eight billion copies. They sang on more than 200 of Elvis's recordings, including most of his biggest hits. They were in three of his best-known movies, appeared with him on most of his early nation-wide TV shows, and toured with him for many years. Throughout Elvis's early career, the Jordanaires were his most trusted friends and probably his most positive influence. While the Jordanaires' bread and butter may have been Nashville's burgeoning recording industry, it seemed that there was always a plane waiting to take them cross country to the pop sessions in L.A. They sang on most of Ricky Nelson's biggest hits and over the years backed up Andy Williams, Fats Domino, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Dinah Shore, The Everly Brothers, Glen Campbell, Patti Page, Neil Young, Perry Como, Loretta Lynn, Ringo Starr, Tom Jones, Andy Griffith, Bobby Vinton, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Billy Ray Cyrus, Clyde McPhatter, and about 2,100 other recording acts.Michael Kosser is a senior editor at American Songwriter magazine, where he has written a column on songwriting called "Street Smarts" for the past twenty years. Since 1979, Kosser's songs have been recorded by George Jones, Barbara Mandrell, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, and others. Many of his songs have appeared on the national country music charts. Kosser offers an in-depth, insider's view of Nashville during its ascendancy in his book “How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A.: Fifty Years of Music Row”.Alan Stoker is the son of Gordon Stoker, of the Jordanaires quartet. He's a Grammy-winning audio engineer, a musician, vocalist, and a music historian. As a musician/vocalist, he's backed up beach music legend Clifford Curry and Sam Moore of the Stax Records duo Sam and Dave. He's also recorded with prog-rock group McKendree Spring and E Street Band bassist Gary Tallent. He's opened shows for Ray Charles and his orchestra, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon band, the Tams, Crystal Gayle, and others. He's the long-time legendary archivist for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, TN. He's preserved some of the earliest recordings of the biggest names in music. Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash are just a few of the artists whose recordings Stoker has been involved with. His work is credited on close to one hundred commercially released products, including “Hank Williams Mother's Best Flour Show”, “The Patsy Cline Collection”, “The Bristol Sessions: Historic Recordings from Bristol, Tennessee”, and the Grammy award–winning “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945–1970”.Stoker has appeared in numerous documentaries as a music historian. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript Thank you for tuning into the 85th episode of the Wedding Songs Podcast. I am Matt Campbell and today I am going to be talking about memorial songs you can play during your wedding day, to remember loved ones you have lost. Before I get started I just wanted to give a shout-out to all of the wedding professionals who stopped at our booth at the Wedding MBA. With more than 5400 in attendance, I have to say it was great meeting all the DJs, Wedding planners, Wedding venues, and all of the wedding professionals that stopped by our booth. It was great meeting everyone and sharing our Wedding son suggestions. So, again, thank you very much and we look forward to next year. Now, to get started, I am going to talk about very popular songs to play for particular members of your family that may have passed away. Starting off with your father, three of my favorites are “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross, “In The Living Years” by Mike & The Mechanics, and “Thank You For Being My Dad” by Jon Barker. Next up is Mother and my three favorites are “Two Of Us' by Louis Tomlinson (former member of One Direction), “Bye Mom” by Chris Janson, and “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeren. If you lost a child, you may consider “Tears In Heaven” by Eric Clapton, “Heaven Bound Balloons” by Granger Smith, and “Who You'd Be Today” by Kenny Chesney. If you lost a friend then “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth which was featured in the Fast and Furious series, “Drink A Beer” by Luke Bryan, and “Broken Halos” by Chris Stapleton. And, if you lost a military member then “Arlington” by Trace Atkins, “The Ones Who Didn't Make it Back Home” by Justin Moore, and “Some Gave All” by Billy Ray Cyrus. So, that is just a few to get your mind thinking a little bit about how you want to remember a loved one during your wedding day. If you want to read the list or listen to the list you can do so on our website MyWeddingSongs.com. While you are there make sure you sign up for our newsletter of all the new wedding songs released in the prior month including some great trending songs you can add to your wedding day playlist. On our website, I do feature one hundred songs. I am not going to go thru all of them today. I do have favorite lyric quotes for each song so that way you get a vibe for what each song is about. Let me cover just a few of those to give you an idea. The first one I want to mention is by a new artist HunterGirl, who was on American Idol, with her new song “Red Bird”. Now the “Red Bird” song actually has meaning to us because we lost an Aunt and any time we saw a red cardinal we would always think of her and think that she was present. That is kind of what this song is saying with the lyrics…‘Cause I could use a redbird right now, One from the other side of the clouds, I'm feeling lost and empty, Letting me know that you're still with me. Try to select a song that really reminds you of the person that you lost. Maybe it is a song that you danced to with them, maybe it is a song you had a special meaning with them. That would be the first and foremost song I would choose on your wedding day. Another choice in the Country genre (which is where I am going to start) would be “Bye Mom” by Chris Janson. Lyrics include…And that's a special kind of love, And it's only there for a lifetime, then it's gone, And it's bye mom. Another one that is really popular is Carly Pearce's song “Show Me Around” with the lyrics…And we'll get to spend forever talkin' 'bout whatever, When I get there, promise you'll track me down and show me around. Another song, released in 2019, is “Drowning” by Chris Young with the lyrics…How you were taken way too soon, It ain't the same here without you, I gotta say,

Date: November 16, 2022Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number:  S3: E16: Payton Howie  - Hulsey/Howie...A Poisonous DuoArtist Bio -With backwoods bathed vocals and bona fide southern swagger, Payton Howie is leading the next generation of redneck women. Branded as the ultimate ‘All American Girl' by Scenes Media, Howie is gaining nationwide notoriety with features from CMT, Guitar Girl Magazine, The Boot, Country Rebel, Fox News, and more. Payton unapologetically embodies the untamed tradition that country music was built on, and she's hellbent on bringing her own grit to the honky tonk. Not many can say they've shared the stage with the likes of Carrie Underwood, and Howie is one of even fewer who can say they were handpicked to do so at the age of 5; while other kids were learning how to ride a bike, she was teaching people to expect the unexpected whenever they hear the name Payton Howie. She has multiple songs featured on several of Spotify's sought after editorial playlists and her debut EP, “Youngblood”, has attained over 1 million streams. The accompanying music video for "Never Go Home" shows off her non-stop party attitude while the "Freedom" music video bleeds red, white, and blue. Payton has also shared the stage with artists such as Clay Walker, William Clark Green, Pam Tillis, Aaron Watson, Bret Michaels, The Bellamy Brothers, Ian Munsick, The Band Perry, Warren Zeiders, Billy Ray Cyrus, Hunter Hayes, Walker County, Gary Allan, Chris Janson, Jack Ingram, Coffey Anderson, Josh Ward, Laci Kaye Booth, Bryson Gray, Tyler Farr, Honey County, Chayce Beckham and more. Having just released her newest single, "Keep Her Breathing", Payton Howie is prepared to scorch country music with a brand that's hers alone.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.paytonhowie.comInstagram  - https://www.instagram.com/paytonhowiemusicFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/payton.howieTwitter - https://twitter.com/paytonhowieCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. In this episode we welcome the splendid Holly Gleason, all the way from downtown Nashville, and invite her to tell us about her life as a country music writer and publicist.Holly explains how, as a teenage championship golfer, she first became enamoured of country in her native state of Ohio, later writing about it (as well as about rap and R&B) for the Miami Herald. Tying in the episode's main theme with Woman Walk the Line – the wonderful essay collection she assembled and edited in 2017 – Holly's hosts ask her about her favourite female artists from Emmylou Harris to Taylor Swift. Along the way she gives us the inside lowdown on "Music City" – having just attended 2022's CMA Awards – and talks fascinatingly about Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. The week's new audio interview, with the late great Guy Clark, gives us a chance to discuss that unpigeonholeable singer-songwriter, his complicated friendship with Townes Van Zandt, and his influence on disciples such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell. Two clips from John Tobler's 1986 interview with Guy prompt tearful memories of Holly's friendship with the Texan troubadour. After we've said our own sad goodbyes to Melody Maker mainstay Colin Irwin, Low's Mimi Parker and Nazareth frontman Dan McCafferty, Mark and Jasper talk us out with their favourite new additions to the RBP library including interviews with Patti Smith and Little Simz. Many thanks to special guest Holly Gleason; visit her website at hollygleason.com and find Woman Walk the Line at all good bookshops.Pieces discussed: Women in country, Taylor Swift, Holly Gleason in conversation with John Prine, Guy Clark audio, Guy Clark: Randall Knives, Desperados & Homegrown Tomatoes, Colin Irwin articles, Low, Nazareth, Patti Smith, Bobbie Gentry and Little Simz.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Austin Tolliver over Zoom video.Austin Tolliver's early ambitions were to become a professional athlete. It looked like the Louisiana native was headed that way when he started playing football in college at New Mexico State University (and college baseball at Texas Tech University) and quickly became recognized for his athletic prowess. However, his path changed when he moved to Nashville and fell in love with music. The country-rap blend of Ride 4 Me displays the eclectic layers of Austin Tolliver's musical talents. “From country to rap to rock, my music is a crossover of different genres. I infuse the music I grew up on into my style,” commented Tolliver. His diverse influences ranged from Tupac, Nelly, Ludacris, 50 Cent and Eminem to George Strait, Tim McGraw, Billy Ray Cyrus, Colt Ford and Shenandoah. Sonic evidence of this can be heard across Tolliver's debut full-length album, Ride 4 Me. In college, Tolliver admittedly wasn't the best student. As long as he excelled at sports, the educational requirements took a back seat. “I was a football and baseball player at New Mexico State University and Texas Tech University. My job as a student athlete was to win games, to sell tickets, break records, and win damn championships. I did just that.” Tolliver's father, who was an NFL player and called himself “the rednecks' quarterback,” taught his son to strive to be the best whether on stage or in the stadium as “people paid their hard-earned money to come and be entertained.” Talent, perseverance and a winning attitude lead Tolliver to the attention of Average Joes Entertainment. The Nashville-based record label signed Tolliver and released his debut single, “Tip My Hat,” in late 2020. His 2021 singles, “Yodelay You Down” and “Ride 4 Me” caught the ears of fans and kept their attention through every new music release after. We want to hear from you!
