Episode Notes Continuing our tradition of being totally unstuck in time, CONCLAVE DISCUSSION WARNING. And also we're doing some episodes out of order, sorry. Things Past: We go back to Terok Nor. Quark the collaborator. Dukat is so gross. Cardassian justice, the speed thereof. Another changeling? An Odo morality play. Maybe Garak episodes are only funny when Bashir is there. Rapture: Time for some Indiana Jonesing, and MDMA? New uniforms, and more Bajoran religion. Incontrovertible proof that Sisko is the emissary, which is super complicated for Kai Winn. Odo is probably a Master and Commander fan. BabSpace9 is a production of the Okay, So network. Connect with the show at @babylonpod.page Help us keep the lights on via our Patreon! Kai Winn continues to be one of the most duplicitous, unpalatable, self-serving, hypocritical leaders in Trek history - whew! Thank goodness it's just sci-fi.[Episode discussion begins around 1:12]
Space: the final frontier. Our Prime Directive: to boldly examine what Harry Potter has in common with Star Trek. Hosts Katy and Emily and producer Laurie have found themselves making Star Trek references on past episodes and realized that while Harry Potter is often compared to Star Wars, the future United Federation of Planets is less commonly put in dialogue with the wizarding world. We explore why that is and what looking at Potter and Trek side by side can uncover. Star Wars may be the more obvious point of comparison because it is a mythic story with fantasy elements and a hero's journey, but Trek, like Potter, deals with issues of prejudice, cultural relativism, fascism, justice, and institutional corruption. The magical world and the scientifically advanced society of Trek still have problems. We discuss which Star Trek series is the most like Potter and why it's Deep Space Nine. We compare the loathsome characters Dolores Umbridge and Kai Winn, the troublesome ones Peeves and Q, and the self-sacrificing nonhumans Dobby and Data. Both series also have mirrors (literal or figurative), time travel, and explorations of the past, even though Trek is set centuries in the future. Another important theme is the power of friendship - something that can transcend time, species, and genre. Live long and prosper, listeners!

Andrew joins Ben this week for a discussion about a particular mythical beast, cultural symbol, and imaginary icon. One in the POÄNG and one in the pandemic chair—the guys fill us in on what they have been doing lately. Andrew has been thinking about his gardening hobby, researching a method for aging stainless steel, and creating all sorts of artsy things for his Advanced Dungeons Have Dragons pin Crowdfundr campaign. Ben has been pondering what he's going to do for the April Fools' Day episode this year and playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (compliments of Binary Haze Interactive). Once they have concluded with the pleasantries, they enter… THE DRAGON! Anika and Liz are letting their hair down and ... giving themselves to the Pah Wraiths? This seems like a bad idea... Remembering Louise Fletcher All Star Treks should end before they have a mediocre seventh season that undermines everything that came earlier We do not care for the Pah Wraiths as a concept Make sure you're sitting down because Liz has something nice to say about Rick Berman Kira is a Jewish Bajoran and Winn is a Christian Bajoran It turns out that if you watch all the Winn episodes in a short space of time, her season seven arc arc does not make sense at all Winn/Dukat is a textbook abusive relationship and it's troubling that fandom doesn't see that or thinks she deserved it The similarities between season 7 of DS9 and Revenge of the Sith are actually fairly impressive RIP Solbor, the only person who cared about Winn (and he didn't even like her) It's possible we're meant to find Winn's sensuality repellent (so once again Liz and Anika are Doing Star Trek Wrong) The intimate partner violence of it all If you'd like to see our notes for this episode (which include screencaps and shouting), you can click here.
Rebinging Star Trek DS9: In the Cards Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 5 episode 25 of Rebinge Deep Space Nine: In the Cards where we mix a light-hearted story (Jake and Nog) with one of gloom and doom (Kai Winn's fear of the Dominion). It's always great to have the the character of Kai Winn back in an episode but it comes on the heels of the announcement of Louise Fletcher's death at the age of 88. While we lose another great member of the Star Trek family, her contributions to the franchise will live on forever. In the Cards Sisko (and everyone else) are depressed and weary from the Dominion war. Jake and Nog decide to try and cheer up Sisko by obtaining a very rare baseball card. While they are working on that plan, they get inadvertently tangled in the precarious relationship between Bajor and the Dominion. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet, The Visitor or Rejoined or our VERY SPECIAL episode: Star Trek First Contact. And be sure to listen to our previous episode S5E24: Empok Nor. Next time... Join us next week for S5E26: Call to Arms. Be sure and join our Facebook group and Follow Rebinge It on Twitter! Email us at rebingeit@gmail.com.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (they/them) interrogate Bashir's intense focus on Cardassian teens adopted by Bajorans, Matthew for once agrees with Jo's queering and shipping of Garak and Bashir, and they compare/contrast the shows two best villains Dukat and Kai Winn while celebrating the life and performance of Louise Fletcher. They also spend a little extra time talking about interracial adoption in the 90's. Matthew asks if Jo could stop singing and Jo rants about Keiko somehow being shocked that her husband Miles is a racist. Remembering Louise Fletcher Few characters in Star Trek elicit such a visceral reaction from fans than Winn Adami. Introduced as a Vedek, she was later chosen as kai—the first elected after the end of the Cardassian Occupation. In that role, rather than working in harmony with the Prophets, she actively worked against their chosen emissary. It is perhaps this friction that made her a fan favorite to hate, but the real reason might lay beyond the story, in the portrayal by actress Louise Fletcher. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing remember Fletcher, who passed away on September 23 at the age of 88. We reflect on how she brought Kai Winn to life, how her skill as an actor led the DS9 story in a different direction than first planned, and why Fletcher's Winn triggers self-reflection in so many of us. Winn's back! And she's … First Minister? Anika and Liz put on their robes, dig up an ancient Bajoran city and discuss… Winn wants power, but she's not good at using it Why is Shakaar interesting right up until he becomes a love interest for Kira? Winn thinks she and Kira are playing good cop/bad cop, and Kira's like, "Wait, I don't wanna be a cop!" As a portrait of a white church lady on a power trip, Winn has aged VERY well We are going to generously assume the Federation is a democracy Winn's desperation for power is a trauma response, because the entire planet of Bajor has PTSD She has actual character development (and ceases to be an antagonist to Sisko) in "Rapture" The Prophets seem to hate Jake Sisko specifically, which is just further proof they're not good people It's the episode where we compare the Federation to the British Empire!
Put on your best Opera House hat and join Anika and Liz as we dive into the first of a three-episode deep dive into Kai Winn Adami. This week, we're looking at her rise to power -- covering the episodes "In The Hands Of The Prophets", "The Circle", "The Siege" and "The Collaborator." And along the way, we discuss... If you only watch the Winn episodes, and maybe even only the Winn scenes, DS9 is a really amazing show about two women fighting about religion and politics "In The Hands Of The Prophets" - just because Winn is wrong doesn't mean the Federation is right Winn asks questions the writers should have thought about themselves: why is a human the Emissary? Why should Bajor join the Federation? (Why is this botanist with no teaching qualifications running a school?) Winn is the target for so much misogyny, and it says a lot about how fandom perceived and still perceives women in power. Minister Jaro and Shaxs: the only sexy Bajoran men in the entire history of the planet (also we do not agree on how to pronounce Frank Langella's surname, but Anika's version is probably right) Contrary to popular belief, Winn has integrity: she hates the Cardassians even more than she loves power, and is loathe to collaborate with anyone -- even the Federation Unfortunately we have become Winn/Jaro shippers "The Collaborator": Kira becomes the Vimes to Winn's Vetinari Winn as a maternal figure for Kira, which is GREAT except when you think about what happened to Kira's actual mother and then what happens to Winn… It's the episode where we realise we don't NOT ship Sisko/Winn...
Nana Visitor on Being Kira Nerys and Beyond It's time to celebrate the 100th episode of Trek Untold, and we can't hit a milestone like that without having a great guest deserving of this number. Joining the show is Nana Visitor, AKA Kira Nerys from all seven seasons of Star Trek DS9! We discuss her upcoming book and documentary "A Woman's Trek," and how the role of women has changed on-screen and socially, and the early days of being Kira Nerys with the struggles she faced in life while simultaneously working on a TV series. Nana explains the hardships she went through as an actor portraying a trauma survivor in Kira and what she did to understand this Bajoran resistance soldier, and her journey as an actor through seven seasons to come to terms with who she was as a character, and how she related to her in real life. We break down the physicality and anxiety of becoming Kira and the indelible mark it left on Nana, discuss some difficult episodes of DS9, including "Duet" with Harris Yulin and "Ties of Blood and Water" with Lawrence Pressman, performing with Marc Alaimo and Louise Fletcher as her respective arch-rivals Gul Dukat and Kai Winn, fond memories of Rene Auberjonois and the romance between Odo and Kira, and lastly, we ask the question – is "Move Along Home" really the worst episode of DS9? Plus, memories of working with Angela Lansbury in the touring production of "Gypsy," Richard Dean Anderson on two episodes of "MacGyver," Star Trek action figure stories, the obscure "Working Girl" TV show Nana performed in that also starred Sandra Bullock, and more! Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Shakaar Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 24 of Deep Space Nine: Shakaar. Kai Winn is back! Yay! Louise Fletcher graces us with her presence again as does Duncan Regehr as the title character Shakaar - you might remember him from an infamous TNG episode where he plays a ghost...or a candle....not sure. Either way, he's a tall drink of freedom fighting water and Kira is ready to go back to the trenches with him! I mean who wouldn't? Look at him! Shakaar In this episode, Kai Winn tries to get Kira to help her with a task and then shocks everyone (no one) by having impure motives. Kira ends up back with her freedom fighting buddies in a scuffle that may lead to a Bajoran civil war. Meanwhile, Miles is good at darts. The B-story is a little light in this episode! What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet, The Wire or Second Skin and check out the previous episode, Family Business (which we hated, so maybe go back one more to Explorers). Next time... Join us for the next episode S3E25: Facets. Be sure and join our Facebook group and Follow Rebinge It on Twitter! Email us at rebingeit@gmail.com.
Captain Sisko's interest in an ancient Bajoran tablet causes friction with Kai Winn when he brings it up to DS9 then destroys it. Their problems are just beginning though as the relic releases wormhole aliens to do battle on the Promenade - with Kira and Jake as their host bodies. It's The Reckoning on this week's Mission Log. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Life Support Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 13 of Deep Space Nine: Life Support. Hooray Louise Fletcher is back as Kai Winn to issue burns left and right and throw around her weight as Kai! (And by the way she is looking radiant in white.) But boo....things are not looking good for Kira's boyfriend Vedek Bareil. He may be boring, but she loves him and we don't want Kira to suffer! Life Support Winn and Bareil are on their way to talks with the Cardassians in hopes of signing an historic peace treaty when their shuttle has a suspicious accident. Bareil is the only one seriously injured, putting the peace talks in jeopardy. Bashir does every thing he can to keep Bariel alive, including replacing parts of his brain (??? we can do that ???). Kai Winn's desperation to complete the negotiations and fulfill her legacy as Kai are at odds with Julian's desperation to save Bariel's life. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Collaborator Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 2 episode 24: The Collaborator. Vedek Winn is back! Hooray! In this episode, we are preparing for "the choosing" of the next Kai. Our favorite villain Evil Vedek Winn is on the station to poke around for some info and drop some pretty harsh accusations on Kira's boyfriend, Vedek Bareil. Who is The Collaborator? Kira and Bareil are hot and heavy now - Kira's got her sexy PJs, Bareil's walking around in his undies...it's all very cozy. But...uh oh...here comes Evil Winn to stir up trouble. She accuses Bareil of being a collaborator and Kira is on the hunt for the truth. The trouble is, Bareil isn't being much help and he keeps opening the migraine trigger box and getting cryptic messages. Is he really a collaborator or he is covering for someone else? It's all very sneaky sneaky....but in the end, we do have a new Kai. Who will it be? What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet and Progress or check out the previous episode in the series S2E23 Crossover. Next time... We dive into Season 2 Episode 25 of DS9: Tribunal. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets Welcome to S1E19 In the Hands of the Prophets. In this episode of DS9, we meet Vedek Winn, also known as Evil Winn on this podcast. She's come to the station to push church into Keiko's school and shout "blasphemy" at anyone who will listen. She is not nice and she causes lots of chaos. In the Hands of the Prophets This is a dense episode and we have a lot to talk about (you won't believe how much we edited OUT of this long episode)! Yes, there is the big topic of the separation of church and state when Evil Winn turns up to accuse Keiko of blasphemy! There is also a murder mystery going on in the background as Miles searches for a lost security tool that has disappeared into a pile of goo that may or may not have been a Starfleet ensign that we've never heard of before. We meet Neela, a misguided zealot who also is a good engineer and Vedek Barile who casts a very dull shadow next to Louise Fletcher's frightening portrayal of Evil Winn. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. And kick off the whole thing with our rebinge of the pilot episode Emissary. Or catch up on the previous episode: S1E18 Duet. Next time... We summarize and rate all of the episodes in season 1 and go through our mailbag! Be sure and join our Facebook group and Follow Rebinge It on Twitter!

Kai Winn has added a title. She's now also First Minister of the Bajoran Provisional Government. She's got a problem though: A few farmers in Kira's home province - farmers who were in her resistance cell - are resisting some of Winn's demands. Could Kira talk to them for Winn? Sure. But resistance runs deep - among the farmers, and in their former freedom fighting friend. Also - Miles is in “the zone.” It's Shakaar on this week's Mission Log. Get in touch with us! After an ancient Bajoran tablet is discovered, Sisko finds himself embroiled in a battle between good and evil. The battle is known as "the Reckoning", and the result will determine the fate of Bajor. Unfortunately, the ultimate battle is between Jake and Kira. The Reckoning is the annual "Bajor" episode, so we get another Kai Winn appearance, some vague statements from the Prophets, and a lot of questions about the need to continue this storyline. In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss their frustrations with the Prophets and the confounding actions of Kai Winn! Plus! They discuss the problem with important stories happening once every 26 episodes, Sisko as Abraham, and accepting the Prophets as the "good guys"! Support Clay's Kickstarter at www.bloodyhel.com!
