In this heartfelt episode of Scene N Nerd Presents Blerd Trek, host Will Polk explores one of the most powerful episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "Far Beyond the Stars." Aired on February 9, 1998, and directed by Avery Brooks, this episode tackles tough topics like racism, sexism, and classism—issues that still resonate today. As Will unpacks Benny Russell's journey—a black sci-fi writer in 1950s America—he draws some real connections to marginalized voices' struggles in creative spaces today. The systemic racism Benny encounters while trying to publish a story with a black protagonist is a stark reminder of the ongoing fight for representation in the entertainment world and beyond. Will also illuminates the intersection of sexism, pointing out that both white and black women face significant hurdles in their careers. He emphasizes the crucial importance of recognizing these challenges and supporting diverse voices in every field. Additionally, the episode's chilling portrayal of police brutality resonates deeply with today's issues, sparking a discussion about how fragile progress can be in the fight against racial injustice. Will encourages listeners to reflect on the lessons from "Far Beyond the Stars" and think about the ongoing struggle for equality and representation as we move into 2025. Join us in this important conversation as we celebrate Black History Month and explore the power of storytelling, the need for genuine activism, and the importance of staying alert in the face of challenges. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share your thoughts on how we can turn performative activism into real change. HOPE AND DESPAIR walk hand and hand, but that's not the only lesson to be learned from a classic episode of Star Trek and Deep Space Nine. From a technical standpoint, the Star Trek format is malleable and elastic if the story has a point, and the story can be about anything if there's meaningful characterization. But! Is this episode a TREK, MARRY, or KILL? Bryan and Shereese investigate as our Inner Lights theme month continues. The grades begin at (33:18).

Episode Notes Facets: Nothing can go wrong with everyone embodying Dax's former hosts, right? Dax gives Quark an earjob just to make him be a woman. Kurzodo? Maybe this episode is more about Kurzon and Sisko's relationship? Yikes. Nog is starting on a great journey, and Rom is lovely. The benefits of a strong ensemble cast. Avery Brooks' "creepy voice". Trek episodes where familiar actors play different characters is always fun. The Adversary: Ben gets a promotion! Captain is the highest non-flag rank in Starfleet. We see more of the Defiant. Another infiltration plot. It's weird to not hate Eddington in this episode but we're going with it. On the other hand, Eddington is the one character who does not get weird with aliens. Episode Notes Improbable Cause: Directed by Avery Brooks! It's weird how major diplomatic incidents frequently get explained away by "they're Romulan". [GENERIC CAVE SET]. This episode is like "Coming of Shadows" from DS9. Garak is so perfectly disinterested in Julius Caesar. Jude admits he doesn't hate Odo any more. The principles of not over-using a looming threat. You know Garak's not lying when he actually says he doesn't know. The Die is Cast: That fucker Eddington. Honestly, the Dominion's response to this incident seems thoroughly justifiable under the rules of war. Garak and Odo share a unique exile bond. Our Man Bashir (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, S4 E10) was recommended by he/him Crimson like the color, who said: This one is probably pretty well liked already but...man it's just a blast so why not love on it too? Bashir's 60s Action Spy Holonovel is interrupted by a transporter emergency and all the major characters are replaced by runabout crew. We get the utter delight of the crew getting to ham it up in absurd Bond-style roles, all the while Garak snarks on the whole mess as a 'real spy.' The Garak-Bashir interactions are great, Colm Meany gets to play a gangster, which he does well, and Avery Brooks gets to monologue, plus the 60s spy camp is perfect. Plus we get a bit of a "B" plot that lets Odo, Quark, Rom, and even Eddington solve problems in the dark, which is neat. It's a well worn trope, but this week we're doing the ol' "never be a hitman with a girlfriend and a fiance who participates in an unsanctioned kidnapping and accidentally steals the goddaughter of his hit boss and falls in love with her too," story. A tired chestnut, perhaps, but a reliable one. This week on The CineMeh Podcast Josh and Ryan are going hardcore 90s with this Mark Wahlberg vehicle about a charmingly conscientious, and maddeningly morally nebulous hitman who finds himself pulling the wrong job with the wrong people on the wrong target. 1998's The Big Hit is a head scratcher of an entry in Mark Wahlberg's larger acting library, but it comes at a period where he was still fabulously unserious and willing to take a risk. And what a risk this one is. With an absolutely unhinged performance by Lou Diamond Phillips, more masturbation jokes than an 8th grade boy's gym class, and enough infidelity to make a daytime soap opera jealous, The Big Hit is the most cartoonish action movie we reckon you'll ever see. Last week, we reviewed an actual cartoon. This week an assembly of caricatures. Nothing is serious, the rules of physics need not apply... let's have a stupid, rollicking good time. The Big Hit was released in 1998 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Lou Diamond Phillips, Avery Brooks, Bokeem Woodbine, and Christina Applegate. NORTON WEEK continues!  This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry.  The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home.  His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated.  The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo.  Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon  https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

IT'S THE NINETIES. The Star Trek franchise has never been more popular and striking while the iron's hot is the Deep Space Nine writing staff determined to chart their own course away from the Next Gen juggernaut. But is this show's specificity and sometimes uncomfortable parallels with modern history a bridge too far for the audience of the time? How about today's audience? Bryan and Kristen explore an episode that deals with Bajoran nationalism, surprisingly weird casting, and an even wackier honeypot scene. The grades kick in at (34:06). CAPTAIN JAHEEL SUCKS. Bryan and Kristen are joined by special guest Katelyn Hempstead from the podcast Lizard People to talk about the fourth episode of Deep Space Nine ever which featured a virus that gave the infected aphasia. But more importantly, this episode includes a character so annoying, so worthy of derision, that Bryan has remembered him ever since this episode aired and after rewatching this, Kristen and Katelyn agree -- Captain Jaheel sucks!!! Before deciding if this one should get a Trek, Marry, or Kill, they also talk about lice, the Velveteen Rabbit, David Lynch's "Lost Highway," and test out a new grade. What does any of this mean? Bertila played the Vulcan Sakonna in the two-part DS9 episode "The Maquis" and returned to Trek for a role in the tragic Voyager episode "Survival Instinct" as Three of Nine while a Borg and Marika as a Bajoran. We learn all about her time on Star Trek, including the arduous makeup routine as a Borg, working with Armin Shimerman, Avery Brooks, Marc Alaimo, and Tony Pilana on DS9, and some great stories about Jeri Ryan on VOY.
