Black-Eyed News: Janis Joplin is coming to Broadway! A musical based on the life of the late singer will begin previews this fall at the Lyceum Theater in New York City. Titled An Evening With Janis Joplin, the musical has been touring the country since it debuted in Portland in 2011. Mary Bridget Davies, who played Janis in the touring musical, will reprise the role for the Great White Way. The life story of the late, great George Jones is coming to the big screen. An as-of-yet-untitled biopic of the country music legend is currently in the beginning stages of production with a target release date in the next two years. The film had been licensed by Jones himself in 2011; according to his wife Nancy, Jones had hoped to see the film before his death in April of this year. Of the script, which was penned by Dennis Baxter, Nancy Jones said that her husband’s story “would be told the way [George] wanted it told.” e-more@elmoremagazine.com The ezine that I read weekly has their 2013 Best of nominees list out and the voting begins on July 15th. http://www.thebluesblast.com/2013bbmanominees.htm Also Ctnow.com has their Best of Music Awards nominees out as well get out and vote. Black-Eyed News: The first story this week was the passing of the great singer Bobby “Blue” Bland at his home in Memphis due to complications from an ongoing illness. Bland was born in 1930 in Rosemark, Tennessee, outside Memphis. He began his career singing with a gospel group before joining the blues group the Beale Streeters, which included such future stars as B.B. King, Junior Parker and others. Bland was drafted into the Army in 1952. After his release from the service in 1954, he resumed his musical career as a solo act and established a long-term professional relationship with Duke Records. Soon he had hits racing up the R&B charts, including "I Pity the Fool" and "That's the Way Love Is." Bland often toured with his former bandmate King, and King was on hand to help induct the singer into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Bobby Bland was 83. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/24/bobby-blue-bland-dead-blues-singer-obituary_n_3488362.html The next story of the night is our friend singer/ songwriter/guitarist Chris Bergson is recording his first live album tonight and tomorrow June 25 & 26 at the Jazz Standard in NYC.The band will have a full horn section led by Jay Collins of the Gregg Allman Band. It’s a short interview but still worth the read and the link will also be in tomorrow’s write up: http://theinterrobang.com/2013/06/robert-randolph-is-revived-reborn-and-feeling-good-again/ Bronze Radio Return’s New cd Up on & Over was released today look for it on itunes! Good Luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: Last Thursday was the 30th Anniversary of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Texas Flood.Released on June 13th, 1983, the album almost immediately made a monumental impact on music, going double platinum in the United States and winning widespread, mainstream radio airplay. Named after a cover of a 1958 blues track by bluesman Larry Davis, Vaughan’s album helped propel widespread exposure of the blues to vast new audiences. To read more about it follow the link http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/06/30th-anniversary-of-stevie-ray-vaughans-texas-flood/ The second story was about Paul McCartney’s performance at Bonnaroo last weekend. I didn’t so much take it for the content as I did the writing. Check out this short bit: “As a festival, Bonnaroo has come to be defined by its diversity. the main-stage headliner always plays unopposed, the idea being that entire Bonnaroo community can coalesce around a single artist. Across cultural, generational and aesthetic lines, whose catalogue could possibly be more universal than McCartney's? The answer: Nobody's. And that made this the single greatest Bonnaroo headlining performance in the festival's 12-year history, as it was moment after awesome moment of fever-pitched collective transcendence. "Paperback Writer," "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Band on the Run," "Blackbird," "Something" (played in tribute to George Harrison), "Eleanor Rigby," "We Can Work It Out," "Hey Jude" – to have not gotten swept up in and invigorated by the life-affirming celebration would be an outright rejection of joy.” That is great writing to catch the whole article go to the link: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/paul-mccartney-reigns-at-bonnaroo-20130615#ixzz2WUkaRPi9 The last story was about Paulie’s NOLA Jazz & Blues Fest in Worcester Mass. This year marks the 6th annual for Paulie’s. The date of the Festival are June 21,22 and 23 at the Keystone Plaza Urban Fairground in Worcester. The lineup is great and includes Anders Osborne, Johnny Sansone, One of the final shows of Papa Grows Funk and the amazing Miss Irma Thomas. The piano was damaged after water poured through a broken levee during the August 2005 storm, flooding Domino’s home in the Lower 9th Ward. Its restoration came through $30,000 donated to the Louisiana Museum Foundation. Read more about it here: http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/05/fats-dominos-katrina-damaged-piano-restored/ The Ct music scene lost one of its own this past weekend. Grayson Minney, the lead singer and guitarist for the group Columbia Fields, was killed in a car crash early Saturday morning. According to police, Minney was on Route 85 in Hebron around 3:40 a.m. when he apparently lost control of his car. The car struck a guardrail, went airborne, and crashed into two large trees. Columbia Fields, and Grayson Minney, have long been fixtures on the Connecticut music scene. In 2010 the group won a competition to open for Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Columbia Fields also won the Hartford Advocate’s “Best Indie Band” award in 2008, 2009, and 2010. More recently, Grayson Minney was involved with the “Downtown Rocks For Newtown” benefit. Kal David (Sonny Eclipse) Interview and Listener Fact or Fiction Hello and welcome to The WDW Radio Show - Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #238 for the week of September 4, 2011. This week, I'll be joined by a special guest, all the way from Yew Nork City, the Biggest LIttle Star in the Galaxy, Sonny Eclipse. Actually, it's Kal David, the voice of Sonny Eclipse from Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland. We'll talk about how he won the role of Sonny, what the experience was like, Kal's other voiceover work at the parks and more. I'll then invite another listener on to play Walt Disney World Fact or Fiction, where I ask a series of true or false trivia questions for a chance to win some prizes. I'll then tell you how you can have a chance to play and win as well. I’ll have some more information about our 40-Hour live broadcast from Walt Disney World on October 1 to celebrate the parks' 40-year anniversary, as well as some additional updates before playing play more of your voicemails at the end of the show.
