In the early hours of July 17, 1997, Denise Wolff, 39, had just finished her overnight shift as a card dealer at the President Casino on the Admiral. It had been a good night, and Denise, feeling optimistic, climbed into her brand-new Chrysler Cirrus LX. She had a new job, a new car, and even a new man in her life. Things were finally looking up for her. On her way home, Denise stopped at a drive-thru on Hampton Avenue to grab a bite before returning to her house on Bancroft Avenue. The streets were quiet at this time which was good since South St. Louis had a predator, known as the South Side Rapist, who had been lurking in the area. Ever cautious, Denise had installed a motion-activated floodlight near her driveway, ensuring she would be seen if anyone approached. But tonight, something felt different. Denise usually pulled straight into her garage, never exposing herself to the darkened street. But tonight, she parked her car on the street. She stepped out and walked toward her front door, but never made it.Join Cam and Jen on this Our True Crime Podcast episode entitled ‘Shots in the Dark: The Murder of Denise Wolff.'Listener discretion by @octoberpodVHSAll music by our E.P. @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/02/16/this-was-weirdest-case-absolutely-crazy-puzzling-south-city-murder-remains-unsolved-decades-later/https://www.firstalert4.com/news/st-louis-unsolved/https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/see-no-evil-2472783https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/now-you-see-it-now-you-dont-2472870https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/02/16/this-was-weirdest-case-absolutely-crazy-puzzling-south-city-murder-remains-unsolved-decades-later/https://www.safehorizon.org/get-informed/domestic-violence-statistics-facts/https://slmpd.org/homicide/unsolvedhomicides/https://uncovered.com/states/missouri-cold-cases/st-louis-mohttps://www.bonterratech.com/blog/domestic-violence-statistics

Tim Pawlenty grew up in a family of South St. Paul Democrats but embraced Republicanism as a teenager. He was a hard worker and excellent student in public schools and at the University of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota Law School. He was hired by a prestigious Minneapolis law firm before getting into politics. At age thirty-two, Pawlenty was a member of the state legislature, where he quickly rose to positions of authority. He served as House majority leader when Jesse Ventura was governor. He then succeeded Ventura as Minnesota governor in a close three-way race in 2002. In office (2003-2011), Pawlenty faced large budget deficits thanks to hard economic times and strong DFL opposition in the legislature. He also made a no-new-taxes pledge that restricted his flexibility. He did succeed in slowing the rate of government growth and presided over some legislation and initiatives that have proved enduring.

This episode of the pod brought me back to The Tasty (see Ep. 31).. a lovely vegan spot in south Philly, where I met up with singer / songwriter / producer Max Davey and her partner in crime, multi-instrumentalist and producer Steve Novoa. I've known Max for a lot of years - we first met in the early 2010s when I was the open mic host at Dobbs on South St., but that really feels like a lifetime ago for both of us. In much more recent history, Max Davey has made a mark in the Philly music scene in 2023-24 with a string of eclectic singles. In addition to some killer originals, Max and Steve have released some intriguing cover versions of songs by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dave Matthews Band, and Deathcab for Cutie. Both Max and Steve have come a long way in their personal journeys, processing tragedy and grief in their lives to come to new perspectives on the creation of their art and the value of being present. They are wonderful humans and a musical force to be reckoned with. I hope you enjoy this conversation! JKF ❤️

Darkness Radio presents: The Legend Of Ogopogo: Canada's Loch Ness Monster with Filmmaker/Podcaster/Author, Jason Hewlett! Located in British Columbia, Lake Okanagan is over 80 miles long and is a popular destination for fishers and boaters. It has a storied and rich history, with tales told by native populations for centuries - including the legend of Ogopogo. Ogopogo is said to be an enormous serpent-like creature, which has haunted the deep waters of Lake Okanagan for centuries. Sightings both old and new, as well as a wealth of indigenous tales have led many to believe that the existence of Ogopogo is much more than just a story. As sightings continue to this day, in many ways the legend has become Canada's very own Loch Ness Monster. Author of the new book from Small Town Monsters Publishing, The Legend of Ogopogo: Canada's Loch Ness Monster, Jason Hewlett, joins Darkness Radio today to talk about the creature. We also discuss where it is a living breathing animal, or lake spirit. The culture surrounding Ogopogo, and then expand out to Sasquatch and UFO's and how they relate to this wacky landscape! A new shop for a beloved bakery is now open in Maplewood. Prioritized Pastries made a name for itself, first at the Tower Groves Farmer's Market and then with a storefront in South St. Louis City. The bakery has a huge following because they are 100 percent vegan and gluten-free. Nothing excites owner Alex McDonnell and assistant pastry chef Shane Clasby more than the face of someone who walks in with an allergy or food sensitivity, and they realize they can pick anything in the shop. We chat about how the bakery was born and how they develop recipes, plus we dive into what this new space means for the future of the business, including an expansion of menu items. Let's meet Alex and Shane. Right now, the bakery is open Friday through Sunday with the plans to expand their hours in the future.
Growing up in St. Louis, the taste of a Dad's Original Scotch Oatmeal cookie is one of those classic flavors. The crispy, crunchy cookies have been around for more than a century but now the company based out of South St. Louis City is celebrating a new milestone. We sat down with Chad Huber, one of the three brothers who purchased the long-standing business last year. Chad, just like so many of us, has memories of growing up with Dad's Cookies. He shares the history and the plans for the future in this episode. Something you might not know, Dad's Cookies isn't originally from St. Louis. It started off in California and became a franchise, but now St. Louis is the only place baking the classic cookies, and they're shipped around the country every day. If you haven't visited the storefront, you should take a drive down to Louisiana Avenue in South St. Louis to step inside the building that's stood the test of time. The storefront is open Monday -Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
