I have a background in music–classically trained in violin and viola–and that informs the way I go about some of the more technical things I do. It opens me up to endless possibilities.Sustainable living shouldn't be a luxury—it should be the standard. That's the driving philosophy behind Corey Johnson's innovative real estate development project, NEIGHBR. Corey, the founder and CEO of NEIGHBR, is pioneering a bold new approach to housing that integrates sustainability, affordability, and a resort-style community experience."We like to build spaces that positively impact our community and really serve as a prototype for the future of sustainable living," Corey told me in this episode. His development firm isn't just creating housing—it's showcasing what's possible when cutting-edge technology, biophilic design, and eco-conscious infrastructure come together. At the heart of NEIGHBR's vision is an eco-village concept that fuses sustainability with affordability. The project features tiny homes, geodomes, on-site farming, and commercial spaces, all built with renewable energy sources and water conservation systems. “We're using solar, geothermal, rainwater harvesting, on-site composting, and a farmhouse that fosters a circular economy,” Corey explained. What makes NEIGHBR truly unique is its reimagining of financial accessibility in housing. By leveraging investment crowdfunding, Corey is inviting everyday people to be part of the journey from the very beginning. “What I love about this approach is that it allows people to feel like they've been along for the journey,” he said. “I like to believe that those early investors will really be some of our earliest residents.”NEIGHBR is currently raising capital through Funding Hope, an investment platform aligned with the United Nations' sustainable development goals. For Corey, choosing Funding Hope was intentional: “We're after positively impacting the climate. We're about making people better. And Funding Hope shares that mission.”The first NEIGHBR eco-village will take root in Atlanta, Georgia, with plans for rapid expansion nationwide. With a vision to scale sustainable communities across the country, Corey and his team are laying the foundation for a new model of housing—one that isn't just environmentally responsible but also socially transformative. To learn more about NEIGHBR and explore investment opportunities, visit s4g.biz/neighbr.tl;dr:* Corey Johnson's NEIGHBR project is reimagining sustainable housing with eco-friendly, affordable, and community-focused designs.* NEIGHBR integrates renewable energy, biophilic architecture, and financial accessibility to create resort-style eco-villages.* Corey leverages investment crowdfunding through Funding Hope, inviting the public to participate in the project's growth.* Corey's superpower, "artistic engineering," blends technical precision with creative vision to build transformative spaces.* Through innovation and community engagement, NEIGHBR aims to scale sustainable living across the nation, redefining housing for future generations. How to Develop Artistic Engineering As a SuperpowerCorey describes his superpower as "artistic engineering." Rooted in both his background in civil engineering and his classical training in violin and viola, Corey fuses technical precision with creative vision. "I almost feel like I'm Dr. Strange, who can just grab all types of different ideas and actually pull them into reality," he explained. By balancing analytical problem-solving with artistic expression, Corey designs spaces that are not only functional but also deeply engaging and transformative.Corey exemplified his superpower when designing and building a wellness facility in Atlanta. While ensuring the structure met technical and regulatory standards, he infused the space with biophilic elements, including a koi pond, to foster a sense of tranquility. "We can solve real-world problems, but if something doesn't feel good to the human soul when they interact with it, that can be a challenge," he said. His ability to merge aesthetics with engineering created a space that left visitors in awe, proving that artistic engineering can elevate both form and function.Tips for Developing Artistic Engineering:* Embrace Both Logic and Creativity: Don't limit yourself to one way of thinking—tap into both analytical and imaginative processes.* Immerse Yourself in Music: Corey believes listening to classical compositions enhances problem-solving and fosters a deeper understanding of complexity.* Stay Open to Possibilities: Approach challenges with a mindset that solutions can come from unexpected places.* Prioritize Humanity in Design: Consider the emotional and sensory experience of the spaces and products you create.* Observe Nature's Balance: Nature seamlessly integrates structure and beauty—use it as inspiration for your own projects.By following Corey Johnson's example and advice, you can make artistic engineering a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileCorey Johnson (he/him):CEO, Founder, NEIGHBRAbout NEIGHBR: NEIGHBR is a world-building organization dedicated to creating spaces that enhance the human experience at scale. I've applied that to the problems I see in the world that I feel need solving.Anxiety is one of the biggest mental health challenges of our time, affecting millions of people worldwide. Yet, despite the availability of treatments, many individuals hesitate to seek help due to stigma, cost, or lack of accessibility. Raj Amin, CEO and Co-Founder of Arcade Therapeutics, is tackling this problem by harnessing the power of gaming to provide evidence-based anxiety relief."One of the biggest challenges to engaging people is really the format of that engagement," Raj explained. "It's a big obstacle to get people into therapy. A lot of people haven't tried therapy. There's a lot of stigma associated with it. So we've got to figure out ways to give them an on-ramp to begin self-care. And that's really where gaming comes in."Arcade Therapeutics has developed a mobile game that integrates a psychological technique proven to reduce anxiety symptoms. Rather than requiring users to commit to therapy or medication right away, this game offers a more accessible and engaging way to start managing anxiety. "Two-thirds of Americans play games," Raj noted. "What if you could actually embed a psychological technique into the game that is proven to reduce anxiety symptoms? That's what we've done at Arcade."The company's business model relies on scientific validation, with research-backed methods that have undergone clinical trials funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This has positioned Arcade Therapeutics to be recognized as a digital therapeutic—a form of software-as-medicine. As a result, its products can be prescribed by doctors and reimbursed by insurance providers. With the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rolling out new billing codes for digital mental health treatments starting in 2025, the company is poised for rapid growth.Arcade Therapeutics is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder, allowing everyday investors to support this innovative approach to mental health care. "We need to democratize the way that early-stage companies get built," Raj said. "Crowdfunding allows us to set the stage for a future where companies can be supported by the people who believe in them, including therapists and doctors who see the value in what we're building."Investors and mental health advocates interested in learning more can visit s4g.biz/AT to support Arcade Therapeutics' mission. By blending science with gaming, Raj and his team are making mental health support more engaging, accessible, and effective.tl;dr:* Raj Amin, CEO of Arcade Therapeutics, explains how gaming can be leveraged to treat anxiety.* Arcade Therapeutics' mobile game integrates a psychological technique clinically proven to reduce anxiety.* The company's business model relies on digital therapeutics, enabling insurance reimbursement for mental health treatments.* Raj discusses his superpower, creative problem-solving, and how it has shaped his career.* He shares actionable tips on fostering creativity, including context-switching and learning from diverse fields. How to Develop Creative Problem Solving As a SuperpowerRaj Amin's superpower is creative problem-solving. Throughout his career, Raj has applied his ability to connect different ideas and industries to create impactful solutions. "I would say that I have a creative side in how I think about new businesses," he shared in today's episode. "And I think I've applied that to the problems that I see in the world that I feel need solving."An illustrative example of Raj's superpower is his work with Arcade Therapeutics. Recognizing the stigma and barriers to mental health treatment, he saw an opportunity to use gaming—something millions of people engage with daily—as a platform for delivering anxiety-reducing therapies. "Gaming is something that people are already doing and it's engaging, but we can now apply that in a way that helps bring down stigma and improve access to earlier treatments for mental health," he explained. To develop creative problem-solving as a personal strength, Raj suggests:* Engage in context switching – "I might grab a guitar, play a song for 10 minutes, and then shift to a business challenge. The intersections between different activities often lead to new ideas."* Expose yourself to diverse fields – "Dive into new subjects. For instance, I explored AI and then thought about how it could be applied to mental health."* Solve problems you personally experience – "I created a mini AI-driven coach for myself to see how technology could be leveraged for mental wellness."By following Raj Amin's example and advice, you can make creative problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Marcia Dawood, an experienced investor and advocate for small business capital formation, is on a mission to change that perception. In today's episode, she shared how equity crowdfunding has made it possible for anyone to invest in startups and drive meaningful change.Marcia has been an angel investor for over a decade and served as chair of the Angel Capital Association. She now sits on the Securities and Exchange Commission's Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee, working to ensure small businesses have a voice in regulatory decisions.During our conversation, she reflected on the transformative power of equity crowdfunding. "Back in 2016, when the SEC changed the rules, it became possible for anyone to invest in startups for as little as $50," she said. "But not enough people know about it. The potential for impact is enormous."Marcia's journey into angel investing began with a simple invitation to an investor meeting. At first, she assumed it was a world reserved for the rich and well-connected. But as she listened to entrepreneurs share their visions for changing the world, she realized she could be part of it. “I thought, ‘Where have I been?' I had no idea this was happening,” she recalled. “I started to see how powerful investing could be as a force for good.”Today, Marcia is committed to making investing more inclusive. She highlights that platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine have made startup investing transparent and accessible. "Everything is disclosed on the platform—CEOs can't have side conversations with select investors. That levels the playing field," she explained. One of her biggest concerns is the lack of funding for women-led startups. "Women make up about half the population, but they receive just two to three percent of venture funding. That has to change," she emphasized. By encouraging more people—especially women—to invest, Marcia believes equity crowdfunding can reshape the entrepreneurial landscape. For those hesitant to take the leap into impact investing, her advice is simple: start by observing. "Take your time, look around, and learn. See which companies align with your values. Then, when you're ready, take that first step."Marcia's message is clear: investing isn't just about financial returns—it's about fueling innovation and creating a better world. By lowering barriers to entry, equity crowdfunding is opening the doors for everyone to be part of that change.tl;dr:* Marcia Dawood discusses how equity crowdfunding is expanding access to capital for underrepresented founders and everyday investors.* She shares her journey into angel investing and how it has become a powerful tool for impact.* Marcia highlights the importance of transparency and accessibility in platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine.* She explains the need for more investment in women-led startups and the potential for crowdfunding to bridge the gap.* Marcia identifies decisiveness and resourcefulness as her superpowers, offering actionable tips for making better decisions and solving problems efficiently. How to Develop Decisiveness and Resourcefulness As a SuperpowerMarcia Dawood has honed two superpowers that have propelled her success: decisiveness and resourcefulness. "I've had people tell me that if they were in a crisis, they'd want to stand next to me," she said in today's episode. Whether in angel investing, business, or personal life, she has built a reputation for making quick, confident decisions and creatively solving problems. One of the most powerful examples of her decisiveness came during the pandemic. She shared the story of JoyLux, a startup whose CEO immediately pivoted when faced with financial uncertainty. Instead of waiting for conditions to improve, the company quickly adjusted its strategy, engaged investors, and ensured financial stability. "That kind of decisiveness can be the difference between survival and failure," Marcia explained. For those looking to develop decisiveness, Marcia offers practical advice:* Identify the Core Decision – Clarify what needs to be decided and focus on key factors.* Seek Input, but Don't Overanalyze – Consult trusted sources, but avoid analysis paralysis.* Take Ownership – Make a choice and commit to it, rather than second-guessing.* Learn from Decisions – Reflect on past choices to improve future decision-making.* Act with Confidence – Recognize that no decision is perfect, but moving forward is better than inaction.By following Marcia's example and advice, you can make decisiveness and resourcefulness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. There are different parts to the recipe because I think it's one part fearlessness—I don't know if it's fearlessness or stupidity—and one part persistence and sprinklings of resilience and sensitivity and compassion. We live in an era of unprecedented digital connection, yet loneliness and isolation continue to rise. Darren Mark, Founder and CEO of hūmNET, has set out to change that. His innovative platform is designed to foster real, meaningful connections through shared moments of focus and empathy. Rather than scrolling endlessly through divisive social media feeds, hūmNET users can create and participate in "hums"—synchronized moments of contemplation, prayer, or reflection—with others across the globe.Darren describes hūmNET as "the worldwide web of empathy," an alternative to traditional social media platforms that often prioritize engagement over well-being. "We've all got these devices in our pockets that promise connection," Darren said. "And yet, with the loneliness epidemic and isolation, we feel less connected than ever. hūmNET is really looking to solve the problem of how we help people feel connected more deeply."At the heart of hūmNET is a simple but powerful experience. Users can create a hum—a designated time when they and others focus their thoughts on a common theme. Participants see glowing beacons on a map, visualizing who is joining them in that moment. A gentle vibration increases as more people join, reinforcing the sense of collective presence."Imagine my daughter, standing outside in the cold during a climate protest, wondering if anyone else cares. Now, she can open hūmNET and see that 87,000 others are thinking about climate change with her," Darren explained. "That's super empowering."hūmNET is raising capital through regulation crowdfunding on Funding Hope, a platform aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This strategic choice reflects the company's mission-driven approach, allowing its users to participate not just in the platform but in its growth and success. "There's something so organically intrinsic about what hūmNET is and raising money from the crowd," Darren noted. "It aligns perfectly with our mission."In a world craving genuine connection, hūmNET offers a hopeful vision for the future—one where technology enhances empathy rather than eroding it. Darren's passion for building a more connected, compassionate world is evident, and with the support of a like-minded community, hūmNET has the potential to transform the way we engage with one another online.tl;dr:* hūmNET, founded by Darren Mark, is an innovative platform designed to foster real, meaningful connections through shared moments of focus and empathy.* Darren shared how his past experiences in tech, marketing, and empathy-building shaped hūmNET's unique approach to digital connection.* The company is raising capital via regulation crowdfunding on Funding Hope to align with its mission-driven approach.* Darren discussed his superpower of fearless initiative, highlighting bold actions that have led to pivotal opportunities.* The episode concluded with practical advice on cultivating courage, persistence, and human connection to drive positive change. How to Develop Audacity to Act As a SuperpowerDarren describes his superpower as a combination of fearlessness, persistence, resilience, sensitivity, and compassion. At its core, however, his defining strength is courage—the audacity to take bold actions others might hesitate to attempt."I don't know if it's fearlessness or stupidity, but I've always just rolled up my sleeves and figured things out," Darren shared. His approach to challenges involves diving in headfirst, fueled by a belief in his mission and an unshakable determination to make an impact. One story exemplifies this superpower: While running a Kickstarter campaign for a previous startup, Darren realized he wasn't gaining enough traction. Determined to change that, he took a leap of faith—literally. Spotting billionaire investor Mark Cuban on the streets of Brooklyn Heights, Darren seized the moment. He grabbed his product, ran up to Cuban, and attempted to engage him. While Cuban didn't personally respond, Darren's effort wasn't wasted. His flyer landed in the hands of Cuban's limo driver, which eventually led to an invitation to pitch on Shark Tank.Darren's experience provides key lessons for developing fearlessness as a personal strength:* Act Quickly on Opportunities – When an opportunity presents itself, hesitation can mean missing out. Darren's success often stems from his willingness to seize the moment.* Embrace Rejection as a Stepping Stone – Facing rejection is part of the process. Darren has learned that persistence often turns initial failures into eventual victories.* Believe in Your Mission – Conviction in one's purpose fuels the courage to take risks, even when the outcome is uncertain.* Be Willing to Learn and Adapt – Every experience, whether successful or not, provides valuable insights that can be applied in the future.* Leverage Human Connection – People appreciate sincerity and determination. Approaching others with respect and authenticity makes bold actions more likely to succeed.By following Darren's example and advice, you can make fearlessness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Dr. Alessi begins by expressing gratitude to his listeners and discussing topics such as the history of forensic medicine, the impact of Polio, and the development of its vaccine. He welcomes Dr. Charles Cavo, Chief Medical Officer at Pounds Transformation in West Hartford, to discuss health and nutrition, including healthy eating habits, the evolution of diets, weight loss strategies, and the use of medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. They also explore staying committed to New Year's resolutions, understanding biomarkers like insulin and their role in diet regulation, the impact of processed and ultra-processed foods, and the importance of fat metabolism in maintaining overall health and nutrition.
In this episode, Host Mary Donohue talks to Griffin Dunne, actor, producer and director and now New York Times best-selling author about his family memoir The Friday Afternoon Club. His Hartford to Hollywood family includes generations of writers, movie producers, journalists, and actors including his father Dominick Dunne, uncle John Gregory Dunne, and aunt Joan Didion. This prominent family dynasty has part of its roots in Irish-American Connecticut, coming from Ireland to Derby and Hartford. Irish Catholics, unwelcome in Protestant Connecticut from the jump in the 1820s, nevertheless made Connecticut home. In this episode, Dunne shares stories about family figures such as Hartford's Dominick Burns, a self-made man who immigrated from Ireland at age 11 and became a business owner and bank president. And Dr. Edwin Dunne, a Harvard-trained surgeon, who was the grandson of an Irish immigrant and the son of a machinist at the Farrell Foundry and Machine Company in Ansonia. And we don't forget the Hollywood part of the story either with Dunne's vivid memories of his father's life as a movie producer and crime journalist! Our thanks again to Griffin Dunne for joining us for this episode. His book is available at your favorite bookstore or on Amazon. The new Hartford Public Library Park Street at the Lyric Branch is located at 603 Park Street. The building that housed the Park Street Trust Company where Dominick Burns served as co-founder and president is located at 617 Park Street, on the southwest corner of Park and Broad Streets. The grave monument company that is mentioned is Beij, Williams and Zito-still in business. John Zito, Jr. was a sculptor as well as a partner in the cemetery monument company. We did it!! This is our 200th episode of Grating the Nutmeg! Thanks to our listeners, we have travelled across the state during every time period to bring you vivid, fascinating stories from our state's history. Become a podcast subscriber to get notified every time there's a new episode! During this holiday season, it seemed like the perfect time to bring you the story of Connecticut's biggest toymaker! Of all the toys that are enshrined in the National Toy of Fame, two stand out as having solid Connecticut connections, the Cabbage Patch doll and the Erector Set. In this episode, we're going to find out how A.C. Gilbert, a Yale educated doctor, became a millionaire with an idea he got while riding the Metro North train from New Haven to New York City. His construction toy, the Erector Set, sold in the millions and helped to educate generations of scientists and engineers. He came up with dozens of best-selling toys that were all manufactured at his factory in New Haven, Connecticut. We'll also interview Walter Zawalich, Gilbert Trains Curator, at the Eli Whitney Museum about their holiday Gilbert train show. Co-host Patrick O'Sullivan will share his information on 1965's James Bond slot car toy that helped to push the company into closing. Much of today's information comes from the book The Man Who Changed How Boys and Toys Were Made, The Life and Times of A.C. Gilbert, the Man Who Saved Christmas by Bruce Watson and the website of the Eli Whitney Museum in Hamden, Connecticut. The Whitney Museum collects and studies the products and legacy of A.C. Dr. Alessi discusses men's health and the impact of noisy work environments on hearing, emphasizing the importance of diagnosing and treating hearing loss, including the use of hearing aids and proactive measures. He also interviews Father Rick Frechette, a West Hartford native and Catholic priest who has been living and working in Haiti since 1987, highlighting his humanitarian efforts. Additionally, Dr. Alessi speaks with Dr. Gabe D'Amato, a urologist at the Men's Health Institute at Trinity Health of New England, about men's health topics such as urinary tract issues, prostate cancer, urinary frequency in both men and women, kidney stones, and prevention tips.
On episode 251, Emily welcomes Dr. Amy Marschall, a clinical psychologist focused on trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming care. They talk about the transition from traditional therapy models to neurodiversity affirming approaches, and the importance of lived experience and self-diagnosis in mental health care. They talk about the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals in accessing care, particularly in rural areas. The path to neurodiversity-affirming care involves the need for some clinicians to unlearn practices that we now understand could be harmful. Emily and Amy also talk about the significance of community support in finding the right clinician, as well as the broader implications of neurodiversity affirming practices in daily life. Takeaways The traditional expert-client model can be unhelpful in the world of neurodiversity. Lived experience is helpful in understanding mental health needs. Self-diagnosis is a valid and necessary option for many. Inappropriate therapy practices can lead to trauma that complicates healing. Telehealth can improve access to care, especially in rural areas. Community visibility is helpful to neurodiversity-affirming clinicians. Get your podcast swag just in time for the holiday season! Clinicians, check out our courses, which can help you move toward a more neurodiversity-affirming therapy environment. Also, consider joining our Therapist Hub, which will open for new members soon! The Neurodiversity Podcast is available on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, and you can also join our private Facebook group. For more information go to NeurodiversityPodcast.com. Dr. Amy Marschall earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 2015. Her clinical specializations include trauma-informed care, neurodiversity-affirming care, rural mental health, and telemental health. BACKGROUND READING Amy's website Facebook
In the mid-20th century, Hartford's G. Fox and Co. was one of the most successful family-owned department stores in the United States. Today, many Connecticans have fond memories of visiting G. Fox at the holiday season -- marvelling at the Christmas Village atop the marquee and meeting Santa in Toyland. In this episode, Natalie Belanger and Jen Busa of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History talk about the history of the store, owner Beatrice Fox Auerbach's commitment to customer service, and the holiday traditions that so many customers still remember. You'll hear snippets from oral histories conducted in the 2000s by the Stave Group for the Connecticut Museum. Transcripts and audio files of these oral histories are available at the CT Digital Archive, a collaborative member organization that supports digital preservation and access for all Connecticut's people. The voices you heard today were those of Ann Uccello, Bruce Blawie, Ruth Blawie, Betty Jane Ladd, Bruce Stave, and Fanny Raptopolous. Want to try making the Date Nut Bread that Jen and Natalie made for this episode? Here's the recipe, as published in the Hartford Courant February 26, 2009. G. FOX & CO.'S DATE NUT BREAD RECIPE 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped into 1/4-inch pieces 1 cup sugar 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup shortening 2 eggs, well beaten 2 cups flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon vanilla Grease a 9-by-5-inch pan. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Place dates and sugar in a large mixing bowl. In a saucepan, combine the water and shortening and simmer until shortening is melted. Pour over dates and sugar, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cool slightly. Stir mix ingredients with a wooden spoon, not an electric mixer. Add eggs, beating well. Combine dry ingredients. Stir into date mixture until well blended. Batter may be slightly lumpy. Add walnuts and vanilla. Turn batter into greased loaf pan and bake one hour until center of loaf springs back when touched. Cool thoroughly before removing from pan. Image credit: G. Fox 1969 holiday catalogue, CMCH collection 2020.57.25 Hear more about how G. EPISODE 407 - Kathryn Betts Adams - The Pianist's Only Daughter - A MemoirAbout the authorKathryn Betts Adams, MSW, PhD grew up in St. Paul. Minnesota and now lives in West Hartford, Connecticut. After a decade of clinical social work practice in mental health, nursing home, and substance abuse settings, she served on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she taught social work practice with adults and older adults and received tenure in 2011. She has published over 40 research papers about family caregiving, geriatric depression, loneliness, and other aging-related topics. In recent years, she has written popular essays about aging and caregiving and her recent memoir about caring for her parents. Kathryn and her husband have two grown children, one grandson, and two cats. Book: The Pianist's Only Daughter: A Memoiris a frank, humorous, and poignant exploration of aging in an aging expert's own family. Kathryn Betts Adams was the only daughter of colorful and talented parents: her mother, an English scholar and poet, and her father, a concert pianist and music professor. Their dramatic emotional lives, marital instability, and eventual break-up provided the backdrop for her 1960s and ‘70s youth.Nearly thirty years after they were divorced, her newly single father and her never-remarried mother, by then diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, have reconciled and decided to live together again. As her mother's condition deteriorates, Kathryn has to step in to help manage her care. Despite her expertise as a gerontological social worker, she finds that old family dynamics and disappointing limitations to available services for older adults make every care decision a difficult one. In the face of sometimes overwhelming responsibility, Kathryn marshals available resources to help her parents maintain their quality of life and unique humanity despite the relentless effects of time and chronic illness.Grounded in insights about health and mental health, The Pianist's Only Daughter touches on universal themes of aging, parent-child relationships, artistic expression, love, and loss through the intimate story of one family.~~~**A Winner of the 2024 PenCraft Seasonal Book Award Spring Competition in the non-fiction, memoir genre.**"It's both a beautiful narrative history of your/our parents' era and creative life, as well as the bittersweet, difficult decline of our loved ones and the challenges of caregiving all at once. “That's my job: to take the foundation of what they have – love of singing and basic vocal technique – and then just refine it, to challenge them to start being more musical artists themselves. I personally do a lot of giving the kids choices: ‘If it's not in the music, how do we want to sing this? What are your thoughts?' We listen, we reflect. I really want them to have ownership of what we're doing.”Karla McClain (she/her) is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescent/Young Adulthood Music in her 24th year of teaching. In Connecticut, there are LGBTQ community centers in New Haven, Norwalk and, most recently, Bridgeport. There have also been recent efforts to launch a queer hub in West Hartford. These spaces are important for community, safety, resources, and even are associated with reduced suicide risk among LGBTQ youth, according to the Trevor Project. Connecticut Public reported on the New Haven Pride Center's move to a larger location in January. They say this will allow them to offer more community resources. This hour, we hear from Juancarlos Soto, executive director of the New Haven Pride Center. If I'm not mistaken, it was John Keats who said “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” That pretty much sums up Chelsea Clocks. This company is the oldest functioning clock company in the United States, and they make clocks at the highest levels of refinement and luxury. They still make mechanical clocks with their iconic solid brass case. The breadth of their offerings is significant, and they still run a robust repair shop to keep these beautiful timepieces running in top shape. You will find Chelsea clocks on naval and private ships, in homes around the world, and they are even a steadfast presence in the White House.Today on the podcast we have the pleasure of talking with Tony LaChapelle, the President and COO of Chelsea Clocks. In our conversation, we discuss the history of the company, the current structure of their business and production facilities, the nature of the “ship's bell clock”, and how Chelsea has maintained their relevance for more than a century. We even discuss their long relationship with Tiffany & Co. and the production of clocks for their business. If they are good enough for Tiffany, they are certainly good enough for anyone! While we discuss the range of Chelsea's activities, you certainly need to hold one in your hand to appreciate them. When you first feel the literal gravity of these timepieces you will start to understand the difference. Here are a few places to find Chelsea Clocks in person, and more can be found on Chelsea's retail locator.Deprisco Jewelers, Boston, MA (The Dogwatch can personally vouch for this business as we have worked with them for a decade, including a very important ring...); Shreve, Crump, and Low, Boston, MA and Greenwich, CT; Tiffany and Co. , Boston, MA and New York, NY; Phillips' Clock Shop, Swampscott, MA; F.L. A pivotal mentorship changed Matt's trajectory with high school football coach Frank Robinson, who imparted valuable lessons: Taking his advice to heart, Matt excelled on the football field, playing center and guard while also focusing on the fundamentals of life – where attention to the little things ensures that the big things take care of themselves. His academic journey led him to Syracuse University, where he studied Psychology and TV Production. There, he forged a lifelong friendship with his roommate, Derek. After college, Matt joined his father in the plumbing business, attending tech school at night to become a master plumber. However, life took another turn when he transitioned into the tech industry for transportation and parking. Matt soon ventured into entrepreneurship, creating his own business with a northeast territory and relocating to Sudbury. As 2020 unfolded and the world faced unprecedented challenges, Matt decided it was time for a change. Fueled by the philosophy of "life's too short," he transitioned to a completely different field, entering the world of mortgages at Fairway Mortgage. Today, he stands as a top 10 loan officer for the company and is among the top 1% in the country. Join us in this riveting conversation with Matt Lazowski as he shares his journey of using difficulty as a driving force and embracing the philosophy that "life's too short" to settle for anything less than what makes you truly happy.

Are you tired of juggling endless tasks in your commercial real estate business? Wondering if there's a way to boost productivity without burning out? Join Ash Patel as he sits down with Bob Lachance, founder of Reva Global, to uncover the game-changing potential of virtual assistants. Discover how these dynamic assistants can revolutionize your workflow, from lead generation to administrative duties, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: scaling your commercial real estate empire. Key Takeaways: Start Small, Gain Confidence: Virtual assistants (VAs) can significantly enhance your business efficiency, but starting with one VA and gaining confidence is often the best approach. Gradually add more VAs as you identify specific tasks that can be outsourced effectively. Clear Task Identification: Successful utilization of VAs hinges on precisely defining the tasks you want them to handle. Categorize income-producing tasks from non-income-producing ones and offload the latter. Remember, even if a VA performs at 80% of your level, the time saved can significantly grow your business. Avoiding Burnout and Overcoming Skepticism: Monitoring burnout is crucial, but VA tasks are typically specialized and structured, which can prevent burnout in comparison to monotonous assembly line work. Skepticism about VAs can be countered by giving it a try, ensuring clarity on the tasks you need assistance with, and utilizing tracking metrics if necessary.
