Nita Sweeney attended the MFAW program in Port Townsend from 2006 to 2008. She is the award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving.   While Nita always dreamed of being a writer, she didn't know her own stories had merit. Nita took a path to writing that had stopovers in training dogs, playing the flute, and becoming a partner at a law firm. She was a follower and student of Natalie Goldberg's, author of Writing Down the Bones, before she became Natalie's assistant in Taos, New Mexico. At 49 years old, Nita took steps to becoming a marathon runner, chronicled in her memoir Depression Hates a Moving Target. “I thought the story was ‘middle-age woman takes up running,'' Nita says, “but it was about ‘middle-age woman tries to save her life.'” Nita's new book, Make Every Move a Meditation is available for pre-order now. Today's conversation is with Nita Sweeney, ultramarathoner and award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving. Nita's memoir personally helped me change my mindset to stay on course with my own marathon training, and so I'm just thrilled to get to share this conversation with all of you. Nita was facing a point in her life where she was in a deep depression and nearly suicidal when a friend posted on Facebook about her most recent run. Nita found her way to a couch to 5k plan that was the start of her running journey, even if conspicuous at first. She used her dog as a decoy when she stepped out of the house for her very first interval of running. What followed was Nita pushing her own limits and discovering the magic of running. Nita's always practiced meditation and so was able to channel that skill in running and she focused on her form through Chi Running method. She has since completed several marathons and an ultramarathon. Andrea and Craig welcome Nita Sweeney, an author, distance runner, and meditator who shares her tale of overcoming depression and anxiety through long distance running with her dog Morgan. She details the first basic steps everyone should take to start their battle against depression, getting out of bed and doing a basic self-care task such as brushing your teeth. Nita describes how at 49, being overweight and depressed she went from “couch to 5k” and how it changed her life. Another challenge Nita was able to overcome was the negative voices in her head that filled her with negativity and self-doubt, making her constantly second-guess her decision to improve. She narrates how she was able to defeat those voices and how to keep them from spoiling your drive and motivation. The co-hosts share some of their experience with running (and with pups) and how it benefited them, as well as their take on trail running versus road running. Listen to the episode to find out how you too can go from “couch to 5k”, become a marathon runner and overcome depression, anxiety, self doubt and even flourish along the way.Visit Nita's website: https://nitasweeney.com/All things Nita: https://linktr.ee/nitasweeneyCheck out Nita's books:Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running With My Dog Brought Me Back From the Brink https://www.amazon.com/dp/1642500135https://nitasweeney.com/about-the-book/Free eBook: Three Ways to Heal Your Mind You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Movinghttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1642502553Nita Sweeney's BioNita Sweeney is the award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving.
