Hast du dich schon einmal gefragt, warum eigentlich immer im Sitzen meditiert wird? Ist das wirklich nötig oder kann geht es auch anders, zum Beispiel beim Spazierengehen oder Joggen? “Oh my gosh. 60 seconds. I think I can do that.”
Depression Hates A Moving Target is about author Nita Sweeney's experience with crippling anxiety and depression and how she got into running despite often not being able to get out of bed before taking up the sport. Nita was inspired by some posts from her Facebook friend who got into “jogging” by following a run-walk plan, and one day took the kitchen timer and her dog Morgan out to try it out for herself. Nita's mind was not her only challenge to overcome, she also had an ankle that would swell when she ran too much which made her doubt that she was built for running. By dedicating a lot of time and energy to finding solutions that helped her keep running, she was able to slowly increase mileage over time enabling her to train for her first half-marathon, and later her first marathon. Running changed Nita's life in many ways aside from making her physically fit; it started by helping her get out of bed on the days she ran, and with time helped her deal with anxiety and depression and gave her energy to start writing again.Nita Sweeney has a law degree, had been writing for most of her life, and officially authored 3 books; she wrote many more books, but most of them have not yet been published. She started running with her dog in 2010 while also dealing with crippling depression that kept her in bed most hours of most days. Nita has since run many training miles, one ultramarathon, 3 marathons, 29 half-marathons, and over 100 shorter races. Nita Sweeney attended the MFAW program in Port Townsend from 2006 to 2008. She is the award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving. While Nita always dreamed of being a writer, she didn't know her own stories had merit. Nita took a path to writing that had stopovers in training dogs, playing the flute, and becoming a partner at a law firm. She was a follower and student of Natalie Goldberg's, author of Writing Down the Bones, before she became Natalie's assistant in Taos, New Mexico. At 49 years old, Nita took steps to becoming a marathon runner, chronicled in her memoir Depression Hates a Moving Target. “I thought the story was ‘middle-age woman takes up running,'' Nita says, “but it was about ‘middle-age woman tries to save her life.'” Nita's new book, Make Every Move a Meditation is available for pre-order now. That's what mindfulness practice has allowed me to do. I don't have to push and pull on either one. I can be with what arises, no matter what it is. Mindfulness in Motion Therefore Thoughts on Breathing Notice how much you hold your breath. During the day, just notice. When I'm running, often, I'm not forcing my breath instead, I will try to let my body react, relax, and let it take a natural breath. Therefore And I think that this mindful awareness of my own behavior, and realizing that there was something driving me that I was unaware of. As a result of my actions, I would get bullied because other people didn't like what I was doing. Therefore So that awareness that there was something else going on, so much deeper, than I could have possibly worked with, to maybe modify my own behavior, or at least, be able to be with it without all the shame and guilt and things. Therefore And then when the bullying did happen, having the compassion because that's one of the things in meditation is we develop mind states, one of which is loving kindness and so having the compassion for the person, another person to realize that they too, were coming from some kind of place of often fear, that's what usually it is, we're coming out of fear. Therefore It's taken years of therapy, to help me understand that. But in the meditation practice, sitting with memories of that, the thoughts that come up now, the body sensations, especially being able to be with the discomfort, and then also having fond memories that I didn't really remember because there was so much of the kind of bad things that I didn't let them happen. So So when you're still or when you do meditation, even mindfulness in motion, when you let the rest of the world drop away, whether it's through in the writing practice the sitting in moving meditation, the rest of the world rep drops away, and joyous memories can come up. Ep#104 All too often in the wellness world, especially in the diet and fitness circles, our mental and emotional well being doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's a huge blindspot because how we feel and what we think is so fundamental. Mental health disorders are linked to the prevalence, progression, and outcome of some of today's most pressing chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. They increase the risk for substance abuse and addiction. Our mental health affects how we handle and respond to stress, make choices, relate to ourselves and others. Bottomline, mental health IS health. When our mind is suffering, our whole being suffers. Today's episode is a poignant example of how our bodies have the power to heal our minds and how our minds have the power to heal our bodies. I talk with Nita Sweeney, an award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink , and her upcoming book, Make Every Move a Meditation, which was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. Nita's personal journey of overcoming a lifetime of chronic depression and anxiety through a unique combination of running, writing and meditation is a powerful example of how it really is never too late to reclaim our health and happiness. Her story, a brave and honest account of beating the odds and cultivating inner resilience is incredible inspiration for anyone struggling with mental health or even just stuck in a rut and needing to make some healthy lifestyle changes. "I realized I thought I was writing a book about a middle-aged woman who ran a marathon, and what I was actually writing about was a woman trying to save her life." Nita Sweeney, the award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink, joins Heather to talk about her journey of becoming a runner — and her journey of finding herself. Before she discovered running, Nita was a 49-year-old chronically depressed, occasionally manic, and unable to run for more than 60 seconds at a time. Using exercise, she unearthed an inner strength she didn't know she possessed, and with the help of her canine companion, she found herself on the way to completing her first marathon. A former lawyer-turned-author, Nita has a new book — Make Every Move a Meditation — that comes out this summer and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal. A certified meditation leader, mental health advocate, ultramarathoner, and former assistant to writing practice originator Natalie Goldberg, Nita founded the groups Mind, Mood, and Movement to support well-being through meditation, exercise, and writing practice, and The Writer's Mind, to share using writing practice to produce publishable work. Welcome episode # 14! Today We are continuing on a theme we have touched on quite a bit this season which is mental health, and specifically today we will focus on depression. According to the scientists, at least 300 million people worldwide struggle with depression, and its only getting worse. And here is another interesting stat for you, scientists also have estimated that roughly 53% of the world is unhappy. These numbers are not good. Now, I am no depression expert, but today's episode guest is. Our guest today is award winning author author and runner Nita Sweeney who is going to take us through her amazing story of going from contemplating suicide in the depths of depression to picking up running which totally changes her life. Before she started running she was overweight, chronically depressed, struggling with bipolar disorder, and barely able to function in life at all. Her journey of running with her dog is an amazing journey that completely transforms her life and mental health. This story reminds us all that its never too late to start something, to make changes in our life, and that often, it just starts with small changes, that we build on over time. I think you'll really enjoy listening to Nita, and this is just a teaser for the award-winning book she wrote that shares the same title as this episode: “Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink.Nitas Website: https://nitasweeney.com/Buy her book: https://nitasweeney.com/about-the-book/Pre-Order her new book: https://www.amazon.com/How-Make-Every-More-Meditation/dp/1642509892/

Today's conversation is with Nita Sweeney, ultramarathoner and award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving. Nita's memoir personally helped me change my mindset to stay on course with my own marathon training, and so I'm just thrilled to get to share this conversation with all of you. Nita was facing a point in her life where she was in a deep depression and nearly suicidal when a friend posted on Facebook about her most recent run. Nita found her way to a couch to 5k plan that was the start of her running journey, even if conspicuous at first. She used her dog as a decoy when she stepped out of the house for her very first interval of running. What followed was Nita pushing her own limits and discovering the magic of running. Nita's always practiced meditation and so was able to channel that skill in running and she focused on her form through Chi Running method. She has since completed several marathons and an ultramarathon. “Make goals so small that you can't fail.” -Nita Sweeney If you spend 60 hours in a period of 60 days devoted to achieving whatever your goal is, that's about 1 hour every day. Will you say it's doable? Probably, if you're motivated enough that is. However, if you are facing depression and anxiety on top of that, even the simplest task will sound like a hike to Mount Kilimanjaro. But…. What if we changed that to 60 SECONDS instead? Now we're talking! Nita Sweeney suffered from depression, mood swings, and grief from the loss of her loved ones for so long. And like everybody else, Nita longed for a better life, a happier one out of the ravine she's in. But making that change does not come easy for anyone… until… she found a tool that gave her a jumpstart, one that lasted for a mere 60-second. It may not sound much, but eventually, Nita got her footing and became an award-winning wellness author and ultramarathoner — all in her late 40's! But that's not only what helped Nita overcome her negative emotions. Listen in as Nita reflects on how doing both the inner work made the outer work more bearable and lessons she learned about making ridiculously small goals and being always on the move. As her book states, Depression Hates a Moving Target. So, keep on moving! Adversities can get beyond our ability to conquer, and it's not your fault. It's just how it is. That's why we have a community. But sometimes, it's really up to us to make that call ourselves. Ask for it and it will come. If you are dealing with depression, anxiety, having thoughts of suicide, or just need someone to rely on for emotional support, don't hesitate to call and reach out for that needed help. Nita Sweeney is the award-winning author of "Depression Hates a Moving Target". As the title suggests, she uses running (with her amazing doggo) to overcome mental illness. Getting started with running and making it stick at age 49 was not easy for Nita. Now, she's run three full marathons and dozens of half-marathons since 2010. She even ran her first 50K last year. Her stories from the ongoing journey will make you laugh, cry, and go out for a run, of course. Nita's new book, "How to Make Every Move a Meditation", comes out this summer. And it's already been mentioned in a list of anticipated workout books in the Wall Street Journal. Andrea and Craig welcome Nita Sweeney, an author, distance runner, and meditator who shares her tale of overcoming depression and anxiety through long distance running with her dog Morgan. She details the first basic steps everyone should take to start their battle against depression, getting out of bed and doing a basic self-care task such as brushing your teeth. Nita describes how at 49, being overweight and depressed she went from “couch to 5k” and how it changed her life. Another challenge Nita was able to overcome was the negative voices in her head that filled her with negativity and self-doubt, making her constantly second-guess her decision to improve. She narrates how she was able to defeat those voices and how to keep them from spoiling your drive and motivation. The co-hosts share some of their experience with running (and with pups) and how it benefited them, as well as their take on trail running versus road running. Listen to the episode to find out how you too can go from “couch to 5k”, become a marathon runner and overcome depression, anxiety, self doubt and even flourish along the way.Visit Nita's website: https://nitasweeney.com/All things Nita: https://linktr.ee/nitasweeneyCheck out Nita's books:Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running With My Dog Brought Me Back From the Brink https://www.amazon.com/dp/1642500135https://nitasweeney.com/about-the-book/Free eBook: Three Ways to Heal Your Mind You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Movinghttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1642502553Nita Sweeney's BioNita Sweeney is the award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving. Can exercise really help anxiety and depression? For a wide array of reasons, even a quick jog may help someone struggling with their mental health more than you may think. Listen in to learn: How to start on your exercise and mental health journey Why a jog can influence your anxiety or depression If journaling may help your process Nita Sweeney, the Author of Depression Hates a Moving Target, shares her journey handling her mental health by reclaiming her physical health. While there is a wide range of medications available for severe depression or anxiety, they may not be the best option for every individual coming to terms with their mental health. Instead, physical activity like running or jogging can have profound benefits as an alternative or in concert with prescription medication. However, one of the cruelest aspects of anxiety and depression can be the challenges one faces when trying something new or the significant fear of failure. Despite this, even getting off of the couch and outdoors to attempt can be the first step on your path to remedying your mental health. Visit nitasweeney.com for more information. The mental health benefits of running are numerous, yet talking directly about depression is often pushed to the side in running circles. But that's not how #RunPainFree rolls. In today's episode, Coach Jessica Marie Rose Leggio shines a spotlight on award-winning author Nita Sweeney. She shares her intimate story on how depression affected her and how running brought her to a better place. Nita's story is harrowing, authentic, relatable, and we hope everyone out there can glean a lesson or two from Nita's words of wisdom. #RunPainFree: Our obligatory question: What is your running story? Nita Sweeney: I'd had an awful year where a whole bunch of people died, to the point that I was not just glued to the sofa; I was almost under it. I have chronic depression, bipolar and bipolar two, which often manifests as depression. So, I was on the sofa, scrolling through social media, and saw a post from a high school friend. She was following a running plan. She said, 'call me crazy, but this running is getting to be fun.' My immediate thought was, you have got to be joking! So, I followed her progress as her post had planted a seed in the back of my mind. I went to the website, and it said as a starting point, do 60 seconds of jogging. I'd tried many things, and my friend posted her progress, so I thought, why not? I was terrified people would laugh at me, so I decided to take our dog for my first run so the neighbors would think I was exercising him. I took a digital microwave timer and headed to a hidden ravine, and jogged for 60 seconds. To my surprise, I didn't die! I'd run earlier in my life, but it was just sprinting to lose weight. There was no joy in it; there was no peace, there was no sense of accomplishment. It was just how many calories did I burn? Starting running wasn't a heroic act; it was a mere act of desperation. I was just at the end of my proverbial rope, and I was at a place where I had to do something, or I was going to end up back in the psych ward. #RunPainFree: We all have negative self-talk and insecurities. Whether someone admits to it outwardly is irrelevant. The only person you have to admit it to truly is yourself. When did you realize it was more than just negative self-talk? Nita Sweeney: I'd practiced law for about ten years. I was proud of my work, but I found myself in a place where I couldn't do my job. I went to a psychologist, and she said to me, do you realize how hard you're treating yourself, how critically you're speaking to yourself. I knew that I was different from many people. But I didn't realize that it was possibly diagnoseable. She also told me that practicing law was the worst case of job fit she had seen in over 20 years. I was so out of touch with myself; I had this critical voice that said, 'if you were better, you'd really love this job.' My psych told me that type of thinking was toxic. But taking up running wasn't the linear path of progress; it was more like whack-a-mole. The voice pops up, you hit it, and you think you've got it. But oh no, here it is over here and over here and here. Running, in the beginning, was just a new place for my depression to voice itself. It took time to deal with my negative self-talk when running. #RunPainFree: What tools did you use to discourage the wrong voices, or did a cheerful voice overshadow them eventually? Nita Sweeney: I was using Map My Run, and at the end of each session, it would ask me how I felt. I may have been slow, my form may not have been great, or my left ankle may have niggled, all that stuff. No matter how critical my thinking was that day, I would start the run journal with 'way to go Nita, good job!' At first, it felt kind of fake. But eventually, it carried over to the rest of my life, and especially on the run. In any new situation, at first, I get that critical voice. But eventually, I'll hear a whisper that says, 'sweetheart, don't be so hard on yourself. Honey, it's okay.' It's ever so quiet. But it's in the back corner of my mind, and so I have to listen for it. #RunPainFree: Wow, it lends a lot to the power of journaling. And how just repeating that to yourself eventually becomes your positive self-talk. It's so powerful because we all are so used to it on the opposing side. In your book, you talk about how napping became a necessity with your depression. I found it interesting because there's a good amount of information that says napping is a sign that you're depressed. But it's not physical tiredness; it's emotional tiredness. #RunPainFree: Can you talk from a mental health standpoint about what that did for you? Nita Sweeney: When I came home from an outing to the grocery store, to a coffee house, to anything, I would have to lie down. And it just depended on the level of my depression at the time. So to have a day where I tried to take a nap and couldn't fall asleep, and then to realize that my brain wants me to go out for a run was unfathomable. #RunPainFree: How important is it for someone with depression to have that one person with unwavering support? Nita Sweeney: For me, it was vital. I know that for single people, joining a group serves that purpose. I was lucky to have my husband Ed, so I didn't join a running group for quite a while. There are other reasons like anxiety, paranoia, and things like that. But I had Ed beside me. Some people need running to be their own thing. They don't even want to talk about it that much. It's their mind time, their alone time, their planning time. They don't need races; they don't need training groups. They want to run, but that's not me. I've got to talk about it. I didn't tell Ed or anybody for at least a month that I was running. I had to convince myself that it might stick to feel comfortable just sharing that I was running. I was afraid that it would be like the mini trampoline in the basement and the art classes I took if I failed. Often the person that you're trying to protect is yourself. The reality was, I was trying to protect myself from disappointment. But becoming a runner has been anything but that. Battling Depression with Running Shoes and a Dog: Nita Sweeney A major depressive episode turned Nita Sweeney from the law to writing. She is now an award-winning author who shares what she’s learned in her autobiographical Amazon best seller Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink. Running, and more specifically, running with her dog helped change Nina’s life and her mental health, and she talks with Coach Claire about how running can be an effective tool for managing mental health issues, the challenges and limitations of running, the importance of community, even a virtual one, for keeping your spirits and your training up, and for all you new pandemic puppy owners, she shares tips on how to run with your new friend. Nita has been plying her writing trade for over 25 years, and her work has been featured in health.com, healthline.com, livestrong.com, Fupping.com, PsychCentral.com, bpHope.com, Bustle.com, NextAvenue.com, UpJourney.com, Medium.com, Pawstruck.com, Thrive Global, WGRN, Sweatpants & Coffee, Authority Magazine, Intergenerational Inspiration, 2014 and Beyond, and Pretty Progressive, and in bp Magazine and Epoch Times, on the Word Carver, Running Dad, My Brain on Endorphins, and Diz Runs podcasts, and was nominated for the Ohio Arts Council Governor's Award. She writes the blog, Bum Glue and publishes the monthly email, Write Now Columbus. Her poem "Memorial" won the Dublin Arts Council's Poet's Choice Award and an early draft of her memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink, (previously titled Twenty-Six Point Freaking Two) was short-listed for the William Faulkner - William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition Award. The book was awarded a Maxwell Medal in the Human Animal Bond category of the Dog Writers Association of America writing competition. It is a #1 Amazon Bestseller in the "mood disorders," "bipolar disorder," and "running & jogging" categories. The book was selected by Ohioana Library to be included in the 2020 Ohioana Festival. Nita also coauthored the popular writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration and Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving, with Brenda Knight (Women of the Beat Generation.) Nita earned a journalism degree from The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, a law degree from The Ohio State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She serves on the board of the Women's National Book Association of San Francisco. For ten years, she studied with and assisted best-selling author Natalie Goldberg (Writing Down the Bones) at week-long writing workshops teaching the "rules of writing practice" and leading participants in sitting and walking meditation. Goldberg authorized Nita to teach "writing practice" and Nita has taught for nearly twenty years. When she's not writing and teaching, Nita runs. She has completed three full marathons, 27 half marathons (in eighteen states), and more than 80 shorter races. Nita lives in central Ohio with her husband and biggest fan, Ed, and her yellow Labrador running partner, Scarlet (aka #ninetyninepercentgooddog). Questions Nita is asked: 2:41 Let's start with your running journey. How did you begin to run regularly? 5:03 Your running journey is also connected to your mental health journey. Can you talk a little bit about that? 7:46 What was it like finding a running community? 10:14 How specifically has running helped your mental health? 11:49 I think it’s pretty well known that everybody who gets a running habit going, you feel good, at least when you stop running. Sometimes when you actually are running it doesn’t always feel good, but most of the time we feel good after we run, but there is a limit to that. You can only run so many miles in a day. You can’t always rely on exercise for all of your mental health issues. Where do you kind of draw the line and say, “Yes, running is a tool but I need some extra help?” 14:16 Sometimes you need actual therapy beyond running; don’t you agree? 15:41 I would also like to talk about you running with your dog, Scarlet. A lot of runners have dogs, and dogs help us get moving and get active, but you decided to write a book about that. Can you talk a little bit about that? 19:03 What other tips do you have for someone who just got their pandemic puppy and want to start running with the dog? 20:59 I know a lot of people who run with dogs who will maybe do their warmup with the dog and then circle back home and drop the dog off and then do a longer run. Is that something that you’ve had to do? In marathon training, you can’t take your dog for 20 miles or something like that. 23:21 I would imagine if you’re doing any kind of speed work or some kind of session where you need to do that, that must be a challenge with a dog? 24:21 Many runners have, like you, found running later in life. How has your running changed as you age? 16:13 With your running and the pandemic, all the races have been canceled for the most part, a lot of us are left without goals. Are you still running and training without that goal and deadline? 28:44 I’ve started to see these socially distant races come up, and it just makes me wonder, is everybody going to wear masks when they run, which is obviously hard, and how do you stay six feet apart, what if you want to pass somebody? Have you looked into any of that, like how they’re going to do that? 31:49 I would love to hear more about when you are depressed or going through a mental health episode, you know that running makes you feel better, you know that calling a friend makes you feel better, you know that intellectually, but because you’re depressed and not feeling good, you don’t feel like doing those things. So how do you start moving when you don’t want to move? How do you reach out when you don’t want to reach out? Any tips? 35:37 Let’s say I’m a brand new runner and I want to find community. Where would you suggest me going? Questions I ask everyone: 38:09 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you first started running, what advice would you give yourself? 38:55 What is the greatest gift that running has given you? 39:42 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Nita: “I had to find something that suited me in a way, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, and running did that.” “I really think that it’s kind of ironic that I ended up writing a book about running. I couldn’t have done that without the focus and endurance that I had from marathon training.” “Having gone through an injury, coming out the other side, realizing that it’s going to be okay, that’s been one of the great things of having done anything, but especially running for a long time, seeing those patterns.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Nita described herself as a 49-year-old overweight woman suffering from crippling depression and bipolar disorder, when she caught the running bug. Her first run lasted 60 seconds, but she kept running just a bit longer each time. Since then, Nita has completed three full marathons, 28 half marathons and almost 100 shorter races—and through it has discovered an inner strength she didn’t know she had. With refreshing honesty, Nita shares her journey from debilitating fear to self-mastery. We will discuss the parallels between running and meditation, the importance of doing that which is scary, and the necessity of not only having a vision, but trusting and believing in it. The following provides a taste of Nita’s thoughts about running, writing and life: Q: Did finally running a full marathon change your life? Nita: The peak experience of running the marathon was not what was life-altering – what changes your life is the day-to-day stuff leading up to those events – showing up over and over. Q: What are the parallels between your writing process and managing chronic depression? Nita: The foundation of my writing process is just starting again and again and again. And as someone with chronic depression, that's essential, because if it were up to me, I would just stay in bed, quite frankly. Q: What's your advice to writers wishing to publish their work and receiving rejection, after rejection, after rejection? Nita: Have somebody you can cry with, be angry with, yell with, throw things with. You know, go for a run and then just go back and send it out again. Q: By what process did you eventually begin to let in the fact that you are good, you are a runner, you are a writer, you are a winner? Nita: I still have the doubts that plague many of us. If I don't run for two or three days, my brain will say, "Well Nita, that was fun. But it's over now. Like, I'm never going to run again. So I say, "Thank you. I appreciate that you're trying to protect me. Now I'm going to go put on my running shoes and just go run a couple of miles. So hang tight, and let's see what happens." When asked if there’s one last thing she’d like our listeners to hear, Nita says, “If you want to do something, especially if it's something that seems so big or maybe terrifying, pick a tiny, tiny goal, a goal so small that you can't fail and start there.” Nita Sweeney is the author of Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from The Brink, an inspirational story of persistence and courage. About Nita Sweeney Nita was forty-nine, chronically depressed and unable to jog for more than 60 seconds when she discovered running. Through the sport, Nita gained an inner strength she didn’t know she possessed, and with the help of her canine companion, found herself on the way to completing her first marathon. In her first memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink, Sweeney shares how she faced emotional and physical challenges to overcome her fears and come back from the brink. At 49, Nita Sweeney was chronically depressed, overweight, and grief-stricken after the deaths of five family members, three friends, and a cat, all within a twelve-month period. As she sat on the living room sofa (possibly eating bon bons), she saw the social media post of a high school friend. "This running is getting to be fun!" she said. Nita was certain she had misread her post. But no. She had begun the interval training program "Couch to 5k." As she watched her progress, Nita's curiosity grew. That was three full marathons, twenty-seven half marathons, and more than ninety shorter races ago. Hear more about Nita's journey now. Tune in! https://nitasweeney.com
