In this episode of The Addicted Mind, host Duane Osterlind speaks with orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. David Hanscom about his book, Calm Your Body, Heal Your Mind. They explore the deep physiological connection between chronic pain, anxiety, and addiction, outlining how regulating the nervous system can lead to genuine, lasting healing.Key TakeawaysThe Problem with Chronic Surgery: A vast majority of spine surgeries for non-structural chronic pain fail because they treat a symptom rather than the root cause. Chronic physical pain is frequently driven by an oversensitized nervous system rather than structural spinal flaws.Threat Physiology vs. Psychology: Anxiety and anger are physical, chemical reactions—a "fight-or-flight" survival mechanism—rather than purely psychological issues. Because the unconscious brain processes roughly 1 billion bits of information per second compared to the conscious brain's 20–30 bits, you cannot simply talk or willpower your way out of deep physiological threat states. The Bridge to Addiction: When the body remains trapped in sustained threat physiology, mental and physical pain become unbearable. Without tools to down-regulate the nervous system, individuals often turn to substances or compulsive behaviors as a last-ditch effort to soothe the body's alarm system.Reframing Trauma Work: Continuously discussing and re-analyzing past trauma can sometimes act as a "trauma anchor," reinforcing pain circuits in the brain. Long-term recovery requires shifting focus toward present-moment awareness and neuroplasticity. The 4-Part Framework for HealingThought Separation: Using expressive writing and mindfulness to separate your identity from repetitive, negative thought patterns.Calming the Physiology: Directly toning down fight-or-flight chemistry by engaging the vagus nerve and creating a felt sense of physical safety.Softening the Ego: Cultivating self-awareness to spot cognitive distortions without needing to defend a rigid identity.Neuroplasticity: Constructing new brain pathways by intentionally practicing gratitude, engaging with community, and pursuing purpose.Resources & LinksBook: Calm Your Body, Heal Your Mind by Dr. David HanscomWebsite: Back in ControlGuided Healing Program: The DOC JourneyFollow and Review: We'd love it even more if you could drop a review or 5-star rating over on Apple Podcasts. Do you suffer with anxiety, depression, or another mental illness? Millions of people do. The usual treatment is a prescription medication. If that doesn't work, the healthcare provider may offer a different one. Diet is certainly not the first topic on the provider's mind. But what if, in addition to appropriate pharmacological treatment, you were able to nourish, protect and energize your brain with your diet? Our guest offers evidence that you can heal your mind with a ketogenic approach to eating. We need to acknowledge that this approach is quite different from the plant-rich eating pattern advocated by last week's guest, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz. Humans around the world have adopted a wide range of dietary regimens that support health. Listen to Dr. Georgia Ede explain why she thinks a paleo or ketogenic diet is helpful for bolstering brain health. At The People's Pharmacy, we strive to bring you up to date, rigorously researched insights and conversations about health, medicine, wellness and health policies and health systems. While these conversations intend to offer insight and perspective, the content is provided solely for informational and educational purposes. Please consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medical care or treatment. How You Can Listen You could listen through your local public radio station or get the live stream at 7 am EST on Saturday, August 22, 2026, through your computer or smart phone (wunc.org). Here is a link so you can find which stations carry our broadcast. If you can't listen to the broadcast, you may wish to hear the podcast later. You can subscribe through your favorite podcast provider, download the mp3 using the link at the bottom of the page, or listen to the stream on this post starting on August 24, 2026. Can You Heal Your Brain with Food? We live in stressful times. More than 50 million Americans take prescription antidepressants, and millions more are on anti-anxiety medication. Unfortunately, while these drugs can be life savers, they don't always work as well as we would like. In some cases, antidepressants are only about 10 percent more effective than a placebo. Dr. Georgia Ede is a psychiatrist who began her investigation into how food affects mental health serendipitously. She was experimenting with her own diet to address some physical health issues. She used a food and symptom journal to discover the best dietary choices for her own health. To her surprise, the “upside-down” diet that helped her feel better physically also improved her sleep and her ability to focus. She started looking into evidence that a paleo or ketogenic diet could benefit people with mental health challenges. What Is Metabolic Psychiatry? There is evidence that people consuming unhealthy diets full of fast food or ultra-processed products are more susceptible to symptoms of anxiety (Nutrition Neuroscience, May 19, 2026). On the other hand, people participating in a supervised weight-loss program using either a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet or a low-fat diet reported improvements in mood (Obesity, Jan. 2007). Those on the ketogenic (Atkins) diet reported less hunger and fewer unpleasant symptoms. Researchers have also tested a ketogenic diet in people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (Psychiatry Research, May 2024).  These volunteers also had metabolic disorders, including obesity, which is often an unwanted effect of the ant-psychotic drugs they take to treat their condition. This four-month pilot study saw participants lose weight, reduce insulin resistance and lower their triglycerides. Even more impressive, they had a 32 percent reduction in the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. They also reported better sleep and improved life satisfaction. You may find this recent article from National Geographic of interest: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/health/article/metabolic-psychiatry-keto-diet-brain-science. Unfortunately, it might be behind a paywall. How Does Food Affect Our Brains? Most of our body tissues are accustomed to getting energy from glucose, with the help of insulin. However, years of exposure to high levels of these compounds often makes the tissues less sensitive to the effects of insulin. The consequence is that the body–and therefore also the brain–is flooded with high levels of glucose. This exposure can result in the formation of advanced glycation end products in the brain, which can be harmful. The brain evolved to use either glucose or a flexible mix of glucose and ketones. These are the result of burning fat rather than sugar. A paleo diet will naturally provide more ketones and less glucose. Dr. Ede and colleagues have found that a ketogenic diet can be very helpful even for people with relatively serious mental problems. In one study (which was not placebo-controlled), patients hospitalized with severe persistent mental illness were given a ketogenic diet. Most did well and had significant improvements in their depression and psychosis symptoms (Frontiers in Psychiatry, July 6, 2022). Is Ketosis Dangerous? Ketosis itself simply means that you are burning fat as fuel rather than sugar. This can be achieved by following a diet that is high in animal fat, with moderate amounts of animal protein and low amounts of carbohydrate derived from plant foods. Ketosis is not inherently dangerous. However, Dr. Ede urges anyone who wants to heal their brain with diet to ask a healthcare provider to monitor and supervise the process. Prescription drug doses may require adjustment, and people may need support as they adopt a paleo or ketogenic diet. That is why this is not a do-it-yourself approach. Is Coconut Oil Helpful to Heal Your Brain? Dr. Ede described the benefits of medium-chain fatty acids produced in digesting fat. You may recall a video from a few years back in which a doctor described helping her husband recover from Alzheimer disease, at least partially, by giving him coconut oil. Some researchers consider Alzheimer disease to be a form of diabetes because the AD brain does not metabolize sugar effectively. Dr. Ede suggested that the benefits may be real, but getting medium-chain fatty acids from the diet rather than be taking coconut oil might be preferable. After Dr. Ede told us about Fran, who overcame significant memory problems by changing to a ketogenic diet, we hope there will be trials on this. Future Trials on Diet to Heal Your Brain Dietary trials are notoriously difficult to conduct. People often don't stick to the prescribed diet, and it can be difficult to find an appropriate placebo for comparison. Nonetheless, Dr. Ede is looking forward to results from a large trial of the keto diet for people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. This study is being conducted in Australia. This Week’s Guest Dr. Georgia Ede is a globally recognized expert in nutritional and metabolic psychiatry. Her 25+ years of clinical experience include 7 years at Harvard University, where she was the first psychiatrist to offer nutrition-based approaches to mental health conditions. Dr. Ede co-authored the first inpatient study of the ketogenic diet for serious mental illness, developed the first medically accredited course in ketogenic diets for mental health, and is a recipient of the Baszucki Metabolic Mind Award. Current research collaborations include pilot studies in pediatric bipolar disorder, adult ADHD, and PTSD. This powerful message challenges us to reconsider how we view the difficult circumstances in our lives. Drawing from the story of Joseph in Genesis, we're reminded that sometimes God doesn't change our picture—He changes our frame. Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and spent years separated from his family. Yet he could ultimately say to those same brothers: 'You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.' This reframing didn't erase the pain or injustice, but it revealed God's redemptive purpose. The question becomes deeply personal for each of us: What situation in our lives needs a new perspective? Are we viewing ourselves as buried, or are we recognizing that we've been planted? Every seed must be buried before it can grow, and the outer shell must decay before new life emerges. When we shift from focusing solely on what's in front of us to recognizing who is with us, everything changes. Like Captain America facing an overwhelming army alone until he turns around and sees his allies, we often miss the support and purpose surrounding us because we're fixated on the obstacle ahead. Our mental health journey requires this fundamental perspective shift—seeing our situations from God's point of view rather than our own limited lens.

This sermon addresses the critical battle for our minds and provides biblical tools for mental and spiritual healing. Pastor Blake emphasizes that true transformation comes not through worldly methods but through God's power working in us by His Spirit, through His Word, and with His people. The message focuses on the necessity of guarding our hearts and minds, understanding that our thoughts literally reshape our brains and influence every aspect of our lives. The core teaching centers on taking thoughts captive by naming them, assessing them against God's truth, measuring them by Scripture, and exchanging lies for truth. The sermon challenges believers to move from passive knowledge to active implementation, acknowledging that healing is a process requiring participation with God's transformative work.

She also gets into why positive affirmations are actually making things worse, what your dreams are really trying to tell you, and what science has actually proven happens to your consciousness when you die.   This episode challenges everything you thought you knew about your mind, your biology, and the toxic thought patterns that have been silently blocking your success this whole time.   Your brain is only 1% of who you are — the other 99% is yours to command, and this conversation exposes exactly how to access it.

My conversation with renowned psychologist Dr. Lisa Miller takes us deep into the fascinating intersection of spirituality and neuroscience. As a pioneer in the field and professor at Columbia University, Dr. Miller shares groundbreaking research on how our brains are actually wired for spiritual connection. Through powerful personal stories, including her own journey through infertility and adoption, she reveals how depression often serves as a spiritual wake-up call rather than just a medical condition. We explore the science behind synchronicities, the power of choosing love even in difficult times, and how developing our "awakened brain" can transform our lives. I talk a lot about raising our vibration to the next level so we can then start to experience the life we really want. After reading so many people over the years, I've learned that even though our soul is destined to live a certain experience, it doesn't mean it's guaranteed. Often, our “human” can get in the way by having thoughts and feelings that don't align with where the soul really wants to go. And while there are many techniques to help us get out of this cycle — like mantras, positive self talk, etc — there's nothing quite like hypnosis. Hypnosis was actually the first certification I ever received when I started my journey towards the work I do today. It's designed to help us reprogram the subconscious mind into a mind that can help us attract what is truly meant for us. Although I love giving uplifting messages, and I can see what is meant for you, I feel that if we don't incorporate tools like hypnosis it can be hard to move into our destiny. For this reason, I asked hypnotherapist Adrianna Carlesimo to join me on today's podcast episode to talk a little bit about how we can reprogram our subconscious mind so that it can actually help us achieve our dreams. -------About Adrianna: I am an intuitive Hypnotherapist, based in Brooklyn, NY, supporting clients in transforming their mental and emotional well-being. My intention is to help people more deeply align with their soul - their highest self - by clearing out anything in their subconscious that's getting in the way of living their happiest and healthiest life.I predominantly work with issues around mental health (anxiety, trauma, depression, self-worth) - yet I also do a lot around clearing out fears and phobias, and overall just supporting folks in reconnecting with their own inner wisdom and own inner healing potential.I am very passionate about freedom and love for all beings on this planet, and I believe that my role in that is by helping individuals heal themselves. Heal yourself, heal the world.Book a Session with Adrianna: https://www.adriannacarlesimo.com/Freebies: https://www.adriannacarlesimo.com/freebies
