Have you ever found yourself trying to outrun grief? That's what Camila Crews did when she was 19 and her mother died. Twenty years later, following the heartbreaking disappearance and death of her father, Camila stopped running and started feeling. Unable to just keep pushing through, she had to face her grief and learn how to care for herself in the process. Facing her grief inspired Camila to start Sorry for Your Loss (Cards), an initiative to help people better understand grief and show up for those who are mourning. Centering the experiences of Black and Brown communities, Sorry for Your Loss (Cards) provides workshops, cards, resources, and community experiences designed to decrease the isolation that so often accompanies grief. We discuss: The fiery, creative energy Camila's parents shared Losing her mother twice: first as a child when her mother moved away, and then as a young adult when she died The instinct to just keep moving forward after her mother's death Having to slow down and finally face grief after her father was killed Living with the unanswered questions surrounding her father's disappearance and presumed death The vital importance of culturally specific grief resources Finding connection with other people who are grieving The origin of Sorry for Your Loss (Cards) and Camila's commitment to helping others understand grief Camila A. Crews builds tools, experiences, and cultural conversations that help people show up for grief in real, tangible ways. After losing both of her parents over the course of two decades, she experienced firsthand how lonely grief can feel and how often people want to support others but don't know how. The purpose of Sorry For Your Loss is to help people get familiar with grief before it overwhelms them or someone they love. Since founding Sorry For Your Loss, Camila has developed therapist endorsed grief support tools and facilitated workshops based on her frameworks at wellness and mental health summits. Before building her own platform, Camila held public relations leadership roles shaping multicultural campaigns for global brands including Apple TV+, Netflix, and Universal Pictures. She blends storytelling, empathy, and lived experience to create meaningful tools for grief, connection, and community. Follow on IG - @sorryforyourlosscards
Ilya Mikin is Vice President of Technology M&A at Corum Group, one of the leading technology M&A advisory firms globally. His background spans more than two decades across enterprise marketing at Intel and Unilever, executive and CEO roles at companies including iHerb, multiple founder exits across AdTech, MarTech, and FinTech, and now advising founders through acquisitions. He has been on every side of the M&A table, which makes his perspective unusually grounded. This episode gets into what has fundamentally changed about how technology and e-commerce companies are built, valued, and sold. The old playbook of raising VC money, growing at all costs, and gunning for IPO has largely collapsed. What replaced it is a market where M&A has become the primary liquidity event for founders, and where the rules for what makes a company attractive have shifted significantly.Eitan and Ilya dig into what acquirers actually look at today: why NRR, GRR, and low churn have become the cornerstones of valuation, why private equity now represents up to 40-50% of buyers in some sectors, and what it means to be an AI-native company versus an AI-enabled one. They also cover the mechanics of the M&A process itself — the four to eight week preparation phase, how Corum builds competitive tension among buyers, why the narrative around a business often matters more than the financials, and the internal deal killers that founders rarely talk about openly.Ilya also shares his take on where shoppable video sits in a world increasingly shaped by agentic AI, why he believes emotional product categories are protected from agent-driven purchasing, and what he is personally watching in the space. Founders who are building toward an exit, or who have never seriously thought about timing one, will find this conversation both practical and clarifying.Website: https://www.vimmi.netEmail us: info@vimmi.netCommerce Untold: https://vimmi.net/commerce-untold/Eitan Koter's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eitankoter/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@VimmiVideoCommerce/featuredGuest: Ilya Mikin, Vice President Technology M&A, Corum Group, Ltd.Ilya Mikin's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ilyamikin/Corum Group, Ltd.: https://www.corumgroup.com/Watch the full Youtube video here:https://youtu.be/2lFD9JXIjIgKey Takeaways:VC investment in D2C e-commerce collapsed more than 90% from its 2021 peak, while M&A deals in that same sector grew 47% in 2025 — the exit path has fundamentally shiftedIPO is no longer the default liquidity event for most founders; M&A is now the primary outcome to plan aroundAcquirers today prioritize NRR, GRR, and low churn over raw growth rate — the stickiness and profitability of your customer base drives valuation more than top-line momentumPrivate equity now represents up to 40-50% of buyers in some sectors, and PE buyers lead with EBITDA, not vision — a minimum of $2-3M ARR and $500K EBITDA is roughly where serious interest startsBeing an AI-native company can increase your valuation by 20-30% or more; for true AI-native businesses, multiples can reach up to 20x EVFor AI companies, proprietary data sets matter more than the technology itself — the model is the moatMarket consolidation follows a cycle: the first quartile of a consolidation window has the most buyers, the most competition, and the highest multiples. Waiting too long means the music stopsThe narrative you build around your company matters more than your financials in the early stages of a buyer conversation — buyers need to feel fear of missing outRunning a competitive process with multiple interested buyers is the single most powerful lever a founder has in an M&A negotiation — inbound interest from one buyer puts the founder in a weak positionDeal fatigue and co-founder misalignment are the two most common internal reasons M&A deals collapse before closingAgentic AI will likely commoditize purchasing for basic, emotionally neutral products — but shoppable video remains essential for fashion, luxury, and any category where emotional decision-making drives the purchaseMore than 20% of WallID's customers now come through AI search channels like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, with zero marketing spend — a real signal of how discovery is changingChapters:[00:00] Introduction and Guest Background[00:57] Ilya's Path from Intel and Unilever to E-Commerce and M&A[02:07] How the Approach to Building and Exiting Startups Has Changed[03:29] Why VC Investment Collapsed and M&A Deals Are Rising[04:40] What Acquirers Actually Look at Today: NRR, GRR, and Profitability[05:58] The Rise of Private Equity as a Buyer and What PE Wants[07:20] How AI-Native Companies Command a Valuation Premium[08:47] Where E-Commerce Multiples Stand Today[10:32] The Sell-Side Process: Preparation, Positioning, and Narrative[12:06] The Consolidation Window and Why Timing Your Exit Matters[13:38] How Corum Prepares Founders for Market[14:17] Technology Evaluation: AI vs. Non-AI Companies[17:00] Building the Story, Outreach, and Creating Competitive Tension[20:02] How Long a Typical M&A Process Takes[21:44] Deal Fatigue and Co-Founder Misalignment as Internal Deal Killers[23:28] Shoppable Video and Agentic Commerce: Where Emotion Still Wins[26:09] WallID: Solving Checkout Friction and Fraud at Scale[28:13] Managing Multiple Ventures and the Side-Hustle Mindset[29:44] What Ilya Is Watching in E-Commerce Right Now: Know Your Agent[31:04] How to Connect with Ilya and Corum Group

He won Olympic gold in 2016, more with his brain, not his legs—and the running world never forgot it. Matthew Centrowitz Jr., the only American man to win Olympic 1,500m gold since Mel Sheppard in 1908, sits down with The Running Effect for a wide-open conversation about what it took to become the most decorated American miler of his generation. From his 2011 NCAA title at Oregon to three World Championship medals, five national outdoor crowns, and that unforgettable Rio final—Centro built a decade-long résumé that no American middle-distance runner has touched. His 3:30.40 PR at Monaco still stands as the benchmark. His tactical IQ was something no training plan could manufacture. This is a conversation about how you build a career like that—the coaching systems, the rivals, the near-misses, and the one race that made it all permanent. From Alberto Salazar's Oregon Project to the Bowerman Track Club under Jerry Schumacher, Centro navigated the highest-pressure environments in American distance running and came out the other side with gold.We want to know what it actually felt like to sit in a field of the world's best 1,500m runners and know—before the bell—that you had already won. And how a decade of that kind of focus shapes a man long after the spikes come off.The legend of Centro, here at The Running Effect. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! Alan catches up with his longtime friend and dental school classmate, Dr. Bart Schultz. The duo takes a nostalgic and candid look back at Al's "super senior" days at the University of Minnesota, critiquing the traditional dental school model as a "scam" that often fails to provide students with enough clinical repetitions. They dive deep into the frustrations of the Minnesota Care Tax, the ethical grey areas of "outrunning the discount" when dealing with certain insurance benefits, and the unique guilt dentists feel when restorations inevitably fail. It's a raw, behind-the-scenes look at the realities of practicing dentistry, managing patient expectations, and the enduring durability of dental work compared to almost anything else in life. Send us Fan MailWith The Mummy Returns returning to theaters for a special 25th-anniversary this weekend, we thought it prudent to dust off our own take on the franchise from several years ago. Though not a well preserved as a mummy, this episode still has some life in it and quite frankly we're too busy getting next Monday's release ready to do our job as podcasters properly. Until then, please enjoy Brendan Fraser's energy and Rachel Weisz's face. Emphasis on the latter
Award-winning journalist and bestselling author Jennifer Breheny Wallace on mattering, resilience through relationships, and the writing practices behind two New York Times bestselling nonfiction books. You'll learn Why resilience as a writer has far less to do with self-care routines and far more to do with the people you surround yourself with. How to tell whether your idea is a series of articles or a book, and what structural test separates one from the other. A practical way to ask for feedback on your writing that actually leads to useful criticism instead of vague encouragement. Why putting yourself in a nonfiction book can transform it, even if every journalistic instinct tells you not to. The writing schedule that let a journalist with three kids produce two bestselling books, and why it starts at 4AM. Why your inner critic tends to sleep in, and how to take advantage of the hours before it wakes up. A visual trick involving artist sketches that can help you push through the frustration of early drafts. What a lesson from Morley Safer at 60 Minutes reveals about the tension between accuracy and storytelling in nonfiction. The surprising research behind mattering and why it goes deeper than self-esteem, belonging, or purpose on their own. A 30-second daily practice that can help you reconnect to your sense of purpose when long-term projects leave you feeling stuck. Resources & Links
The Beatles caused fans to enter into manic states, literally. People died because of it. The band swallowed more pills than food in their early years. They took acid by accident and changed the course of popular music forever as a result. Aside from all the screaming fans and the drugs, beating at the heart of Beatlemania was always just “a great little band.” Listen to learn how the Beatles saved America from certain doom with some of the most exciting music ever made. You'll learn how Mark methodically built a new life centred on health and resilience, tracing his incredible progression from that first run to 1:29 half-marathons and, eventually, discovering his true passion in the mountains. When things start to feel “off” in midlife, it's easy to blame perimenopause. It's easy to accept the advice to slow down—or to internalize the idea that age automatically means decline. But this week's guest, Jen Temperley, isn't buying it. A lifelong triathlete, Jen has faced her share of challenges: unexplained fatigue, weight gain, gut issues, injuries, and symptoms that looked like menopause—but weren't. Through it all, she leaned into curiosity, self-advocacy, and a relentless drive to understand her body on a deeper level. The result? She raced the Ironman World Championship faster at 50 than she did at 40—and continues to thrive in the sport she loves. This week Jen shares the pivotal moments that changed her trajectory, the hard reset she made on fueling, rest, and stress, and what it really takes to rebuild your health—and your power—in midlife.Jen Temperley is a strength, nutrition, and endurance coach with over 25 years of experience working with active women and athletes. A lifelong athlete and competitive triathlete, Jen is currently ranked in the top 2% of her age group, and a 10-time Ironman 70.3 World Championship qualifier. She specializes in coaching women 40+ through the key lifestyle factors that impact performance and well-being; including strength training, fueling, recovery, and the physiological changes that come with the menopause transition. In this episode, you'll discover: The exact moment my inner critic took over at mile 40 and the unexpected technique that silenced it Three practical strategies to recognize and reframe self-doubt when it threatens your professional growth How "strategic disappointment" can become your most powerful tool for resilience How to hold space for joy, doubt, and fear of disappointment without it taking you down or missing out on the gifts of the moment The finish line isn't just a moment—it's a mindset. By the end of our journey together today, you'll have a roadmap for outrunning the voices of limitation that have kept you playing small in your wellness career.
