On Humans
An Essential Difference? Males, Females, and the Spaces In Between ~ Augustín Fuentes

On Humans

Binary thinking is out of fashion. But what about biological sex?Whatever we might say about diversity and fluidity, the ideas of “male” and “female” seem essential in biology. I've taught the subject. I've drawn bees and flowers, with arrows from anthers to ovaries. I've used the terms “dad cell” and “mother cell” while doing so. I don't know how I could have done it any differently. And maybe that's just fine. Human sex cells are binary: sperm and egg. But here's the twist: humans aren't sex cells. Humans are animals. And animals aren't so easily grouped. XY chromosomes don't always produce a penis. And when we turn to hormones, brains, and behaviours, the picture gets even messier.Or so argues Princeton Professor Agustín Fuentes, a leading expert on human biology. His new book, Sex Is a Spectrum, came out this week. It makes the case that biology no longer supports a sharp separation between male and female. Whether you agree with Fuentes or not, it's an argument worth taking seriously. We had a great conversation, ranging from hermaphroditic worms to sex-changing fish, and from gender stereotypes to intersex humans. At times, I pushed back. But I learned a lot throughout the conversation. I hope you do too.Thoughts about Fuentes's argument? Or my takes? Share them at onhumans.substack.com. Send us a textEver hit that wall where your creative tank feels bone dry? That moment when you've been grinding away at your projects, head down for so long that when someone asks for innovation, you come up empty? You're not alone.Creative slumps happen when we get too immersed in our specialized domains. As engineers and designers, we develop expertise through consistent application of familiar tools and techniques. But that same specialization creates mental echo chambers where we recycle the same ideas and follow habitual thought patterns. The result? When innovation is needed most, we feel frustratingly blocked. The solution lies in cross-pollination – deliberately exposing ourselves to diverse inputs that spark unexpected connections. This episode explores three strategies to reignite your creative spark: scheduling dedicated exploration time through activities practicing analogy thinking by mapping structures from unrelated domains to your challengesmaintaining a cross-pollination journal to capture insights for future reference. Ready to break through your creative block? Join us for practical techniques to expand your innovative thinking and approach design challenges with fresh perspective. Your next great breakthrough might be waiting in the most unexpected places – you just need to train yourself to look for the connections. Schedule 90 minutes this week for intentional exploration outside your field, and watch what happens when you allow your mind to wander beyond the boundaries of your expertise.Visit the podcast blog for more information and links.**BI-WEEKLY EPISODES**Subscribe to this show on your favorite provider and Give us a Rating & Review to help others find us!**ONLINE COURSE**FMEA in Practice: from Plan to Risk-Based Decision Making is enrolling students now. What if the real secret to getting better results with AI isn't finding the “perfect” tool, but learning how to work with the tools you already have to create the results you want?In this episode, I'm joined by Sonya Sigler, an executive coach, attorney, and someone who's been working with AI technology inside businesses long before AI became the shiny new toy on everyone's mind. Sonya shares why AI isn't a magic wand or a shortcut, and how working with it thoughtfully, through training and iteration, can actually enrich your creative process — not replace it.If you're a solo business owner or service provider feeling overwhelmed by content demands or frustrated that now there's “one more thing” you have to learn, this conversation will give you a refreshing and practical perspective. We talk about how to experiment with AI without losing your originality, why evolving with the tools matters more than chasing the latest updates, and how small shifts in your workflow can boost your creativity.Plus, I'll share how this conversation pushed me to finally commit to using ChatGPT more intentionally, and how I'm building it into my own content creation process to work smarter, without losing soul or connection.Chapters(00:00) Introduction to AI and Creative Process(00:33) Meet Sonya Sigler(02:40) The Love-Hate Relationship with AI(04:29) Training AI Tools for Better Results(06:49) Using AI in Content Creation(09:37) AI as a Collaborative Partner(13:10) AI in Career Development and Job Applications(17:11) Intellectual Property Concerns with AI(20:07) The Power of Context in AI(22:30) Iterative Process and Training AI(25:17) Authenticity in AI-Generated Content(26:59) Advanced Uses and Customization of AI Tools(31:46) Ethical Considerations and Validation(34:59) Embracing AI for Strategic Thinking(37:14) Conclusion and Call to ActionConnect with Sonya SiglerLinktree: https://linktr.ee/ssiglerCONNECT WITH JEN Book Your Podcast Power HourWebsite: https://brassybroad.comYouTube: @BrassyBroadJenLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jen-edds-470351b/Instagram: https://instagram.com/brassybroadjenTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@brassybroadjen

SIRO and Vodafone have been announced as connectivity partners for Monaghan's newest enterprise hub, CTEK2. The Carrickmacross enterprise hub was officially opened earlier this month by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys T.D., with representatives from Monaghan County Council, Enterprising Monaghan, elected representatives and other key stakeholders all in attendance. The CTEK2 Hub has now also joined the Gigabit Hub Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership between SIRO and Vodafone, which brings Gigabit Fibre Connectivity to remote working and digital hubs across Ireland. CTEK2 is joining a host of other successful Hubs across Ireland, such as Dundalk's Creative Spark, Galway's PorterShed and Skibbereen Ludgate Hub which have already benefitted from the Initiative. CTEK2 is the 24th Hub to join the Initiative. The CTEK2 Hub can now provide businesses and tenants with high-speed, high-quality fibre connectivity, supported by SIRO's 100% fibre network, which can provide speeds of up to 25 Gigabits, future proofing the service for decades to come. This means that as the bandwidth and speed needs of Monaghan businesses grow in the years to come the CTEK2 Hub can continue to keep pace with their needs. CTEK2 is already proving hugely popular with the Carrickmacross and wider Monaghan business community, with 11 tenants already availing of the 17 units onsite. The new hub compliments the existing CTEK1 building located next door, which has been open for several years. The new Hub is already supporting 50 jobs. Businesses using the Hub include a home care provider, an accountancy firm, an executive car rental company and physical therapist, among others. Overall, the 1,450-square-meter facility supports regional talent retention, provides a work base for former commuters, and attracts start-ups from Monaghan and surrounding counties. Offering a range of office options, from hot desks to private spaces, CTEK2 is designed to meet the needs of various users, from solo entrepreneurs to established enterprises. Its extensive facilities, including ample parking and kitchen spaces, allowing tenants to work in a flexible, professional environment close to home. As CTEK2 continues to grow, it plans to host community events and offer further professional development opportunities, solidifying its role as a cornerstone for local business success and innovation. SIRO is a leading full fibre broadband operator rolling out a 100% fibre broadband network across Ireland. Its network is already available in Carrickmacross and Monaghan town. Monaghan County Council CEO Robert Burns stated: "Supporting innovation and driving economic growth in the region are top priorities for Monaghan County Council. We are confident that the partnership between SIRO and Vodafone will significantly advance these goals. The Gigabit Hub Initiative, with its provision of high-speed connectivity, will foster the development of new businesses in the Carrickmacross area and promote sustainable job creation throughout the region." SIRO CEO John Keaney said: "We're pleased to partner with Monaghan County Council to bring Gigabit connectivity to CTEK2, a vital addition to Carrickmacross that supports local business growth and job creation. Through the Gigabit Hub Initiative, we are committed to empowering business communities across Ireland by providing the high-speed, reliable infrastructure they need to innovate, attract talent, and expand into new markets. CTEK2 is an excellent example of how world-class connectivity can drive regional economic growth, and we look forward to seeing the impact it will have on the local community." Vodafone Ireland CEO Amanda Nelson commented: "Vodafone is pleased to partner with Enterprising Monaghan to provide 100% fibre broadband at their new Carrickmacross facility as part of our Gigabit Hub Initiative. Beta, Ireland's festival of art and technology, will return for its second edition with a focus on interrogating the relationship between power and technology, examining how digital tools influence society and how we can take agency back in their use. Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta will return from 1st to 17th November and will feature a series of events including two exhibitions, several interactive workshops, performances, a thought-provoking conference, and an assembly focussed on artificial intelligence and art. Cannes Film Festival winner Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin will make its Irish debut at this year's Beta Festival. Directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud, Noire tells the real-life story of 15-year-old Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950s Alabama through an immersive and encapsulating digital performance showing the power of storytelling through technology. Noire is presented by The Digital Hub, the French Embassy in Ireland and Institut Francais, as part of the official Novembre Numérique programme, and is supported by Smart Dublin. This year, Beta will host two exhibitions: the first Unsettling the Algorithm: Seeds of Resistance, is an international exhibition curated by Aisling Murray and Nora O' Murchú. Featuring artists including Irish-Iraqi artist Basil Al-Rawi, Tega Brain and Sam Levigne, Firas Shehadeh, Winnie Soon and Tzu-Tung Lee, Nora Al Badri and Mediengruppe Bitnik among others, the exhibition will explore how digital infrastructures and algorithms shape, influence and govern our daily lives. Separately, the Local Artists Network will spotlight emerging Irish artists with new work from Conan McIvor, Aisling Phelan, Cailean Finn, and more. Among these installations will be the interactive artwork Boogaloo Bias, which explores the dangers of unregulated use of facial recognitiontechnology particularly among law enforcement. Created by Jennifer Gradecki and Derek Curry, the project examines the practice of 'brute forcing', where law enforcement substitutes images of celebrities resembling suspects when high-quality images are unavailable and explores themes of accountability and bias in automated systems. Keynote addresses by cognitive behavioural scientist and member of the UN's AI Advisory Board Abebe Birhane and Head of Arts Technologiesat London's Serpentine Gallery Kay Watson will be delivered at the conference, while several workshops, discussions and think-ins will be hosted by ADAPT research centre, the Creative Futures Academy, Fire Station Artists' Studios and Creative Spark during the festival. Key highlights for the festival will include: Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin tells the real-life story of the 15-year-old who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950's Alabama in a near-mirror event to that of Rosa Parks, told through an immersive digital performance. Noire won the inaugural award for Best Immersive Experience at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and the production is brought to Ireland by the Beta Festival and The Digital Hub, in association with the French Embassy and Institut Francais, and is supported by Smart Dublin. Noire will make its Irish debut at the Samuel Beckett Theatre from 7th - 10th November. Assembly on Art and AI will bring together AI researchers, policy makers, cultural leaders and artists to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on arts and culture and identify challenges and opportunities to fuel a rolling agenda of areas to consider when creating policy centred on AI. The initiative, a collaboration between SIRO and Vodafone, delivers world-class connectivity to digital hubs nationwide. The Centre officially joined the Gigabit Hub Initiative at a formal launch event undertaken by Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley, along with representatives from SIRO, Vodafone and the Killarney Innovation Centre. This connectivity partnership is set to accelerate innovation and business growth in the Kerry region by providing the Centre's dynamic community of more than 20 companies with access to cutting-edge Gigabit full-fibre broadband. Since its establishment in the late 1990s, the Killarney Innovation Centre has been a cornerstone of Munster's entrepreneurial ecosystem. Housing a diverse array of companies - ranging from financial treasury solutions and software development to sports statistical analysis and health & safety consultancy - the Centre has become a pivotal hub for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and innovation in the area. Over the past two decades, more than 120 businesses have found a home within its walls, collectively creating thousands of jobs, stimulating local supply chains, and significantly contributing to the local economy. The Killarney Innovation Centre joins over 20 leading digital hubs across Ireland, including Galway's PorterShed, Skibbereen's Ludgate Hub, and Dundalk's Creative Spark, in benefiting from Vodafone-SIRO's Gigabit Hub initiative. By joining the Gigabit Hub initiative, the Centre will now provide its residents with access to Gigabit full-fibre broadband, ensuring they have the state-of-the-art connectivity needed to excel in today's digital economy. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Killarney Innovation Centre has consistently offered a nurturing environment for start-ups, SMEs, and established businesses. With high-quality facilities, including flexible office spaces, co-working areas, and modern meeting rooms, the Centre has played a crucial role in driving economic development and job creation in the region. Integrating SIRO's Gigabit broadband will greatly enhance the Centre's capabilities, offering unparalleled internet speeds that support advanced technological applications such as AI, Big Data, or Cloud computing and seamless global communication. This upgrade will attract more start-ups and established businesses to Killarney, further stimulating economic growth and innovation. As the business landscape evolves, the Killarney Innovation Centre remains dedicated to expanding and adapting its services. Future plans include a significant expansion of the hub's size, advanced co-working spaces, and additional meeting and conference rooms equipped with the latest audiovisual technology. Minister for Education Norma Foley TD, speaking at the launch event, noted: "I want to pay tribute to the Killarney Innovation Centre, which has been a dynamic centre since it was established in 2000. Dr. Alaina Johnson, is a clinical psychologist, author, and mother to creatively driven children. She shares her journey from recognizing and nurturing the unique talents of her own children to advising parents of creative tweens and teens. Dr. Alaina emphasizes the importance of exposing children to the arts, acknowledging the multifaceted benefits of creativity on brain development, resilience, and problem-solving skills. Dr. Alaina advocates for acceptance and open-mindedness in parenting, urging parents to support their children's passions, even if they diverge from initial expectations. Through personal anecdotes and professional insights, the conversation highlights the joy and fulfillment that come from embracing and fostering creativity in children. About Alaina Johnson Dr. Alaina Johnson is a clinical psychologist, author, consultant, and mother of three creatively driven offspring. When she took a temporary break from her practice to relocate with her son while he performed on Broadway, Dr. Alaina connected with parents of other creatively driven tweens and teens. She quickly recognized universal themes in the parenting questions and challenges these parents navigated as they worked to best understand, support, and affirm their children and their children's passion. To facilitate her own parenting journey and better respond to the requests for guidance she was receiving from other parents, Dr. Alaina began searching for resources specific to parenting tweens and teens drawn to the creative arts. She discovered that there were very few parenting resources that addressed the unique needs and challenges of adolescent creative artists. Upon her return to her clinical practice, Dr. Alaina began building Parenting Talent to provide workshops and consulting to address this need. With Parenting Talent she works as a consultant, instructor, writer and speaker specializing in supporting parents, families, instructors, and coaches of creatively driven tweens and teens.
