Marneta Viegas, founder of Relax Kids, was the "fame school" student haunted by self-doubt who went on to become a pioneer of accessible children's relaxation. In this episode she details the emotional toll business growth had on her, and how she now fiercely guards her creativity.From Self-Doubt to Mime: Marneta shares her supportive, yet complex, childhood, including attending ballet and tap classes where she struggled with self-esteem. Despite graduating with a degree in performing arts (and crying daily over the music requirements), constant rejection from the children's TV industry led her to pivot to the "silent way," studying mime. She funded this non-verbal training by entertaining children as a clown.The Accidental Birth of Relax Kids: While working as a clown Marneta noticed a critical drop in children's concentration, and using accumulated skills (breathing, drama, mime, silence), she created her unique seven-step system and made relaxation for children "acceptable" by turning fairy stories into meditations, drafting her first book in just three days.The Struggle: Losing the Creative Spark: As Relax Kids grew, the administrative burden took over, and Marneta experienced a loss of creativity, as well as feeling physically sick and struggling with "dark days".Creativity Found and Fiercely Guarded: There is, of course, a happy ending, and Marneta explains how she was able to find her path back to creativity, and how she now prioritizes new creative channels, including performing unique standup comedy, mindful movement, and forest bathing. It's also something that Ra, the founder of Human Design, has talked about frequently — how melancholy brings about creativity.But how true does that have to be? To only find your creative spark through the low moments?So in this episode, I'm questioning all of that and mulling over how we can turn ourselves on creatively, magnetically, and sexually — how we can fuel our fire without subconsciously provoking turmoil.I do believe that low energy is there for a reason and that we are here to learn and heal through it. Bio Chris and Cristina interview Agustín Fuentes about his new book, Sex Is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary (now available). Prof. Fuentes is an anthropologist whose research focuses on the biosocial, delving into the entanglement of biological systems with the social and cultural lives of humans, our ancestors, and a few of the other animals with whom humanity shares close relations. From chasing monkeys in jungles and cities, to exploring the lives of our evolutionary ancestors, to examining human health, behavior, and diversity across the globe, Professor Fuentes is interested in both the big questions and the small details of what makes humans and our close relations tick. Earning his BA/BS in Anthropology and Zoology and his MA and PhD in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, he has conducted research across four continents, multiple species, and two million years of human history. His current projects include exploring cooperation, creativity, and belief in human evolution, multispecies anthropologies, evolutionary theory and processes, and engaging race and racism. Fuentes is an active public scientist, a well-known blogger, lecturer, tweeter, and an explorer for National Geographic. Fuentes was recently awarded the Inaugural Communication & Outreach Award from the American Association of Biological Anthropologists, the President's Award from the American Anthropological Association, and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Binary thinking is out of fashion. But what about biological sex?Whatever we might say about diversity and fluidity, the ideas of “male” and “female” seem essential in biology. I've taught the subject. I've drawn bees and flowers, with arrows from anthers to ovaries. I've used the terms “dad cell” and “mother cell” while doing so. I don't know how I could have done it any differently.And maybe that's just fine. Human sex cells are binary: sperm and egg. But here's the twist: humans aren't sex cells. Humans are animals. And animals aren't so easily grouped. XY chromosomes don't always produce a penis. And when we turn to hormones, brains, and behaviours, the picture gets even messier.Or so argues Princeton Professor Agustín Fuentes, a leading expert on human biology. His new book, Sex Is a Spectrum, came out this week. It makes the case that biology no longer supports a sharp separation between male and female.
