Today's topic aligns perfectly with the season theme of 'Redefine' as we explore today how focus reshapes our running experience. Did you know our attention span averages 8 seconds? Yes, that's a second shorter than a goldfish! So much for Ted Lasso's 'be a goldfish, Sam' pep talk after a blunder, right? We're all in the same boat, pulled by the allure of 'pretty things.' Our focus is a precious commodity, and we hold the reins on where it goes. If, like me, you're eager to find a solution to that persistent craving for another dopamine hit, stick around. What we really want is a quiet brain. A calm brain. Maybe physical exhaustion after a hard or long run is currently your ticket to finally feeling the calm settle in. So often we run to feel better physically and mentally but more often than not we return feeling disillusioned when the results of what we typically track (such as pace and distance) seem ‘blah'. We then feel frustrated and to top it off the mind still feels wired from the 2-3,000 thoughts we experienced during the hour we were running. Retrospectively, we noticed we had a difficult time connecting with the run. We need a solution to our TikTok brains. Ready? Click play. Have you been twisting yourself into a perfect pretzel to do all the meditation and mindfulness practices the experts have told you to do, but can't seem to make any progress on the flurry of limiting beliefs running through your mind?So many people give up on mindfulness practices because they feel pressured to do it "perfectly" or they can't seem to quiet their mind enough to feel like it's "working." As part of Week 1 of Brilliance of Breathwork Month: Demystifying Mindfulness, I share the two big moments where breathwork very practically came into my life as the thing that transformed my own personal journey. These two moments were just the beginning of how impactful breathwork has been on my life, how it took me out of the suffering of the past and the "wanting" of the future so I could become fully present in the now.In these moments, there were  two books whose ideas about mindfulness and breathwork were transformative for me: 1. Chi Running by Danny Dreyer2. You are Here by Thich Nhat Hanh These books helped me to realize that, when we are in physical and emotional pain, we are living in the past. When we are dissatisfied, we are living in the future. The only place where we can be truly satisfied and complete is in the "now."Breathwork, often overlooked in the realm of personal growth, has been gaining recognition for its incredible potential to unlock our inner potential, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. But what exactly is it, and how can it impact your life?Whether you're a seasoned self-development enthusiast or just beginning your journey towards personal growth, this episode will provide you with invaluable insights and practical tools to elevate your well-being and unlock your fullest potential. This episode is part of Briliance of Breathwork Month, an initiative to provide education and tools to demystify the profound  mental and physical impacts our breath offers to our health, wellbeing, and even our careers.Thank you to Pamela Marie Hobby for your contribution to today's Thursday Thread episode by creating a jingle!Support the showBecome a Founding Member of Jen's breathwork membership Brilliant Breathwork before November 30 and receive 30% off using code SPARKLE. Betty Holston Smith heard a doctor on the radio say that outside of losing weight, there are two things you can do to get healthier: Do weight-bearing exercise at least three days a week, with the goal of doing 30 minutes without stopping and of keeping your heartbeat 20 beats higher than your resting rate. And eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts, with only occasional animal protein. As she was listening, she was cooking for her 4-year-old daughter and husband and announced that she was going to become vegetarian, a diet she followed as a kid. I took baby steps until I'd removed everything from my diet that had a face. … I wrestled with eliminating dairy, especially cheese. But when her cholesterol started climbing, I cut dairy. She started with walking; then she tried running one day and liked it. Over time, she walked less and ran more until she became a runner. Running became such a passion that, for eight years, she ran two miles every day, only missing a few days. Her younger brother, also a runner, asked me her why she hadn't done a 5K or 10K, since she wouldn't need to run that much more than she already was. So she did, and because she liked the longer races, she started doing more of those. Her first marathon was the Marine Corps Marathon in 1988, and I've run that marathon, with the exception of two or three, every year. About 10 years ago, she learned how to do ChiRunning, a technique that teaches you how to run without injury, and I became faster and more efficient. Doctors say that she defies medical textbooks because of her lifestyle. Her “fitness age” is 32 , and her resting heart rate is 30 beats per minute. Along with running, she does two hours of body work daily, including strength, flexibility, balance, and relaxation work, tai chi and meditation. For the past 25 years, she has eaten only organic, 100 percent whole foods prepared closest to nature—so nothing processed. She always asks how food is going to function in my body. Is it going to make me healthier? It's a simple yes-or-no answer. And although it's hard work, you can't measure the payoff of being this healthy at almost 80. DR. "One step in a run is one step out of the grave." That's one of the mantra's this week's Run The Race podcast guest has. The former art teacher and retired Marine, now chi running instructor, just ran a marathon in his 35th state, and I was there with him, running that super challenging race in Las Vegas! He talks about that meditative & efficient style of running, along with facing adversity - like divorce and injuries, his roller coaster faith journey, and what he learned about fitness from the military. (3:15) After giving his quick take on our Red Rock Canyon marathon in Vegas (my recap on the previous episode), Scott Mayfield explains what Chi Running is and how it can make you a better athlete suffering through fewer injuries. It can also have a big impact on your heart rate. (12:16) This 60-year-old talks about how fitness helped him through 2 divorces, one of them last year, during which he rediscovered God. (19:19) Scott's faith, for many years, has been up and down, but he's learned God has never left him. And he believes sports can help reconnect us. (23:25) Now, he wants to continue sharing that positive impact with others, especially those who are discouraged. He's working towards being a personal trainer, after a lot of experience coaching different sports. (26:27) Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Scott has learned that mantra the hard way, dealing with injuries, but he has some tips on how to stay healthy with running or whatever exercise you do! It may involve resistance bands and swimming. (32:03) And why is he challenging himself to run a marathon in all 50 states, like me? Some of that goes back to one of his teachers...and his dad. (34:18) He also got positive reinforcement as a runner in the military. Scott explains why the Marine Corps Marathon is still his favorite! And he loves all the people he meets at races. We both often wear Team RWB red eagle shirts for our marathons, we'll explain that. (51:05)My "parting gift" comes from the Bible, about seeing cleraly through or after the fog. And, as we do with all episodes, we close in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. GRUFFtalk How to Age Better with Barbara Hannah Grufferman

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2022 47:03

One of the most effective tools to age better is to move more. In this episode of GRUFFtalk, host Barbara Hannah Grufferman talks with Danny Dreyer, the founder of ChiRunning, a unique way of moving, which he believes will help you keep moving for the rest of your life. Danny Dreyer is the founder of ChiRunning, an approach to running technique based on the movement principles of T'ai Chi. He and his wife, Katherine, have authored three seminal books on mindful movement: ChiRunning (2004), ChiWalking (2006) and ChiMarathon (2012) (all published by Simon & Schuster). The ChiRunning book is now printed in 15 languages and taught by over 200 certified instructors in 23 countries. For over 20 years he has been teaching and promoting injury prevention and higher performance through improving one's running economy. His work is based on his 25-year study of T'ai Chi and 50 years of running and racing every distance from a 5K to 100 miles, including 43 ultra marathons. At age 73 he has now run over 100,000 miles and is still running half marathons. His last running injury was in 1991. ChiRunning elevates running beyond a sport or a fitness regimen, turning it into a mindful practice (akin to yoga, Pilates or t'ai chi), allowing your whole body (and mind) to participate in the act of running. In fact, Dreyer says that the most difficult part of learning to run well is changing your mindset; learning to accomplish more speed or distance with less effort, less recovery and fewer injuries… by focusing your mind, relaxing your body and doing less. The Basic Focuses of ChiRunning: Shorter stride Well-aligned posture Slight forward fall from the ankles for gravity-assisted propulsion Picking up the feet instead of pushing off Steady cadence between 170-180 strides/min. (depending on leg length) for all sub-sprint speeds Nose-breathing and belly-breathing as much as possible Mindful approach to running Deep relaxation in arms and legs Get more information, including finding a ChiRunning coach in your area, here: www.ChiRunning.com Connect with Barbara: Instagram: Barbara Hannah Grufferman Facebook: Love Your Age Website: https://www.barbarahannahgrufferman.com Do you have ideas for topics or guests? How can I cultivate and balance energy in my running, and in life? What is mindful running? What is the difference between Tai Chi, Qigong, and other martial arts? All these questions and much more are answered in this interview conducted between Tampa, Florida and Ponte de Lima, Portugal- shortly after our chance meeting while I was on pilgrimage along the "Camino de Santiago". For more about that, listen to upcoming and past episodes on the Camino! Dr. Larry Cammarata is a self-described "Chi Runner" and Mindful Movement Teacher, which means he applies the eastern traditional concepts of chi energy work to his running, notably techniques of relaxation and energy balance to injury-free running, developed by Danny and Katherine Dreyer. He knows eastern traditions of wellness, and is in fact an instructor of Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong, and has received advanced training in these arts, as well as being a practitioner over the past several decades. In our conversation, we discuss mindfulness practices and the joy of running in the classic methodology of Danny Dreyer, Chi Running, which is described as "a revolutionary approach to effortless, injury free running". Perhaps not completely effortless or now completely new, this method relaxes the body and allows the energy to flow in such a way that posture and mindful movement align, breathing is integrated with ease, and there is overall less stress on the body. "Mindfulness" has been used much more often in practical ways throughout society in recent years, and applied to many facets of life. Larry is on the peaceful edge of this work, and is encouraged by the movement to slow down and bring awareness to our daily practices, including running, something he fosters in his work and life. He and his wife Linda (RN, RYT) are a dynamic team who also happen to run mindfulness retreats exploring different cultures and places across the globe: www.mindfulnesstravels.com - In his work as a licensed psychologist who specializes in mindfulness-based therapy and education, he includes the science and practice of mindful movement! If you would like to know more about the above retreats or his ongoing travels and running adventures, Larry welcomes you to reach out through his own website, or link to all the methodologies and info we discuss at the Running Anthropologist blogsite: www.runninganthropologist.com You can also message or follow us @RunningAntropologist on Instagram and Facebook!

Today's conversation is with Nita Sweeney, ultramarathoner and award-winning wellness author of the running and mental health memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink and co-creator of the writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration & Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving. Nita's memoir personally helped me change my mindset to stay on course with my own marathon training, and so I'm just thrilled to get to share this conversation with all of you. Nita was facing a point in her life where she was in a deep depression and nearly suicidal when a friend posted on Facebook about her most recent run. Nita found her way to a couch to 5k plan that was the start of her running journey, even if conspicuous at first. She used her dog as a decoy when she stepped out of the house for her very first interval of running. What followed was Nita pushing her own limits and discovering the magic of running. Nita's always practiced meditation and so was able to channel that skill in running and she focused on her form through Chi Running method. She has since completed several marathons and an ultramarathon.
