Welcome to our premiere episode of Season 4!  We wanted to bring you something very special and our guest, Lara MacGregor certainly delivers on that and more. Host Lisa Laudico spoke with Lara in November of last year.  In 2012, Lara MacGregor founded Hope Scarves which to date has sent over 20K scarves to people facing cancer in every state in the US and 29 countries around the world.  In 2014 when Lara was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer the focus of Hope Scarves broadened to include support for metastatic breast cancer research.  Lara died in January 2022  of MBC and in her last year of life, Lara turned the camera on herself to share the unvarnished truth of declining well with hope.  Always hope as she would say.  This is an interview that doesn't shy away from the hard conversations that we have when diagnosed with a terminal disease and gives Lara the opportunity to tell us what it has all felt like for her.  We are also joined by April Stearns, founder and editor of Wildfire Magazine and The Burn Podcast.  April had been working with Lara on her soon-to-be-published book, A Hopeful Life, and we hear all about that too.  This episode felt like a gift to be part of, to edit, and to produce.  It's the perfect way to kick off a very ambitious season.   More info is available on our website www.ourmbclife.org Got something to share? This week has been quite a doozy! Let's catch up, shall we? We are beyond excited that MGK popped the question to Megan Fox last week but some recent details about the engagement ring have us questioning this eccentric couple even more. It wouldn't be a social catch up without mentioning Ye (formally known as Kanye West) and Kim Kardashian. Between the awkward photo shoot with Julia Fox to the twitter rant about a child's birthday party, Kanye gave us tons of content. Did this push Kim further into Pete's arms? Are Kanye's actions a ploy to control Kim even post divorce? And, if that wasn't enough, Jamie Lynn goes on a press tour spilling all the deets of her upcoming book and Britney is not happy. Can these famous sisters mend this family feud? We discuss is all! This week also heavy after the passing of our beloved zenfriend, Lara MacGregor, to metastatic breast cancer on January 18th. This is a powerful, moving conversation behind the journey of Hope Scarves and how it has morphed into the amazing organization it is today.  Meet Lara, a cancer survivor and solider that has been inspired to fight for herself and those struggling with debilitating illnesses for over a decade.  Lara found herself on the other side of a frightening cancer diagnosis while she was 7 months pregnant with her second child.  During her treatment, she received a few hand-me-down scarves from another survivor with a sweet, encouraging note. Each time Lara wore or held one of these scarves she felt connected to energy within the piece of fabric.  This prompted her to pay it forward with the same gesture when she was in remission. She shared both the scarves and story behind the scarves with a friend and at that moment she knew what she was called to do.  Thousands of scarves, stories, and hope later Lara is still battling and pressing forward on her mission to change the way we experience cancer.  This episode is a raw conversation about the truths behind this ugly disease, the messy feelings that no one wants to talk about, and what you CAN say/do for someone battling cancer.  If you feel inspired by Lara's story, please do not hesitate to reach out.  There are tons of ways you can help.  Links are below!      https://hopescarves.org/ https://www.facebook.com/HopeScarves/ https://www.instagram.com/hopescarves/

Lara was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 30, 7 months pregnant with her second son. A woman Lara had never met, but with whom she shared a mutual friend sent her a package. Inside were beautiful scarves she wore during cancer treatment and a note saying, “You can do this.” The scarves were both practical and inspiring. And, knowing someone else had worn the scarves and faced cancer helped Lara believe she could do it too. Not long after she finished treatment, Lara went to a Young Survival Coalition Conference. She packed several scarves in hopes that she could pass them along to another woman, as had so graciously been done for her. There, Lara met Roberta and they laughed together as she showed her different ways to wear a scarf. Upon the completion of her treatment, Roberta sent the scarves back to Lara. She had since moved and one of the first friends she met was starting treatment. Lara brought over a scarf to Brooke’s house and they laughed through their tears about what it is like to lose your hair. This whole time Lara couldn’t stop thinking about the amazing journey these scarves were on. So, Lara created Hope Scarves in 2012 as a way to capture these beautiful stories and encourage others. The program started in her spare bedroom with her toddler volunteer by her side, sending out 2-3 Hope Scarves a week. Today Hope Scarves is a bustling office of volunteers and staff, sending nearly 50 scarves a week all around the world. Hope Scarves has sent over 7,000 scarves to every state and 16 countries, to people facing over 90 different types of cancer. The oldest recipient is 92 and the youngest, 4. The Hope Scarf Collection, which changes constantly, contains over 10,000 scarves and over 500 stories.

In a routine trimester check-up with her OB/GYN, she mentioned something she had experienced some bloody discharge from her breast. As all mothers would tell us, the female body goes through some extreme changes during the course of pregnancy, that would otherwise be cause for concern -- she had thought nothing of it. On the other hand, her doctor did not, and Lara was sent in for a biopsy the very same day. 48 hours later she received a call... it was breast cancer. At seven months pregnant, in seemingly picture perfect health and at the top of her career, this was not the news she was expecting. She would soon learn that her cancer was estrogen-receptor-positive, and her pregnancy was directly fueling its growth. Within days, she would undergo her first round of chemotherapy treatment… In this episode, Lara describes her story of facing breast cancer, achieving remission, then being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer only a couple years later, and how she has found her purpose again by living every day with intention.   THANKS, Lara McGregor!
