Improving timely identification and referral of patients who may be eligible for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is critical for improving outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies. On February 7, 2024, ACCC hosted a virtual Working Summit: Advancing CAR T-Cell Therapy Care Continuity and Collaborative Patient Education to explore topics including patient and caregiver needs as well as care coordination between referring providers and certified CAR T-cell therapy centers. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Amy D. Smith, FNP-BC, director of the Meredith and Jeannie Ray Cancer Center at Ivinson Memorial Hospital and co-chair of the Summit about the event's key findings, which can guide cancer programs in building a framework for optimized CAR T-cell therapy care coordination. “The goal really was how do we get those patients [receiving CAR T-cell therapy] back here and get them back into some kind of normalcy in their life sooner? A lot of that is building relationships and having trust with those providers in the academic centers that are performing the CAR T, so that they know that we can provide safe care at home.” –Amy D. Smith, FNP-BC “Keeping care close to home is near to my heart, living in a rural area. That was one takeaway... how do we collaborate better to make this happen for our patients and care teams? –Amy D. Smith, FNP-BC Amy D. Actor, Activist and Storyteller Alysia Reiner Interview! Yes it's true — I just joined the Marvel Universe as DODC Agent Deever on the new Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel. You might also know me as Natalie "Fig" Figueroa on ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (and I won a SAG AWARD as part of the incredible cast!). However, IRL I'm an actress, activist, producer and eco-momma who uses her superpowers for good. But did you know? You can also catch me as Sunny on critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning BETTER THINGS on F/X, and Kathryn in the new Starz horror-comedy series, SHINING VALE, alongside Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear, and Kiki Rains on HBO's THE DEUCE. Also, I both star in & produced the Sundance Film Festival hit, EQUITY, and Tribeca Film Festival favorite EGG, which is 100% fresh on ROTTEN TOMATOES (whaaaaa?!!?). A few other recent adventures include getting naked on BROAD CITY with Abbi and Ilana and going head to head against Annalise on HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. Damn, I am a lucky girl. But MOST Importantly, I LOOOOVE working as a change maker for women. As an advocate for women's rights and climate change initiatives, I am an ambassador for GDIM, started an eco-fashion initiative, Livari, and just became the first ever eco emissary for zero-waste beauty brand, Izzy. I am also on the Advisory Board of the EARTH DAY INITIATIVE. I have been invited to speak at The White House, The United Nations, Google, Cannes Lion, Women's Media Summit, Collision, and countless film festivals and other events about breaking barriers for women in all fields, specifically the entertainment industry. And to (not so humble) #humblebrag for a sec, I'm really proud to have been awarded the Persistence of Vision Award by the Women's Media Summit, the Sarah Powell Leadership Award by the Women's Prison Association, the MUSE Made In NY Award from The Mayors office & New York Women in Film and TV, the Moves Power Women Award, the Pioneer in Filmmaking Award, the Collaboration Award from the Coalition for Women in the Arts and Media, and, oh please, I don't want to bore you with all of um... OTHER AMAZING THINGS! WAR WORDS The off-broadway show Alysia is currently in Her character in the play has cancer, so she'll likely want to discuss Cancer Support Community (where she is an ambassador), My Cancer Family, and perhaps a few other non-profits in this sector She'll also likely want to use this time to talk about Veterans ! PHILANTHROPIC / ACTIVISM Geena Davis Institute on gender and Media Alysia is on the board - does a great deal of work in this sector ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM IZZY BEAUTY Alysia is an eco-emissary and developed two shades of zero-waste lip gloss for them. Welcome to the series finale of The Cancer Mavericks. In this final episode, we reflect on the first seven episodes through the lens of history and progress with a series of insightful conversations featuring some of healthcare's most influential and visionary voices across the past four decades. If history is a teacher, we have learned that change can happen, albeit slowly. But it is only when the people stand up, organize and activate their voices demanding change, that the culture will shift, the institutions will pivot, and the very system itself will be forced by the will of the citizens to bend towards the arc of justice. Debbie has focused her career on fundraising from corporations and foundations. This week, she tells us how she has made career decisions through relationship building and networking, which confirms my hunch that work in CFR is not so different from working with individuals. Debbie Rosenberg Bush is director of corporate and foundation relations at Columbia University School of General Studies, which she joined in March 2022 as the first person to hold this newly created position at the School. She previously served in a similar role for nine years at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Prior to Columbia, Debbie was senior director of development for the Cancer Support Community, director of corporate and foundation relations at Gilda's Club Worldwide, director of foundation support at the American Museum of Natural History, and director of development at the New York Academy of Sciences. Before her career in development, she worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as director of publications and was an editor at Random House, The Sciences, and Consumer Reports. Debbie has a Bachelor of Science from Yale University and is active in the governance of the Yale Club of New York City. She was also on the board of Women in Development New York. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/devdebrief/support

Michael Ostrolenk has been exploring the relationship between post-conventional living, transformational leadership, optimising health and regenerative paradigms his whole life. His interest in human growth and personal development began when he was 9 years old and worked with psychotherapist Pat Lawson learning biofeedback, meditation and guided imagery. The fact that Michael started his journey so young really intrigued me! So, while we will have him on again as a guest to explore the myriad of ways his expertise can help his clients, today's focus is on the adversity and disability Michael experienced as a child. “Our mess is so often our message” in that it can break us or make us -– and it can be the catalyst for a lifetime of learning and helping others as in Michael's case. Here is a summary of Michael's extensive bio: Master's degree in Transpersonal Counselling Psychology, from John F. Kennedy University Post-graduate training in somatic psychology from the California Institute for Integral Studies Certified massage therapist from the McKinnon Institute Marriage and Family Therapist, he has served patients dealing with mental illness, neurological impairments (Center for Adaptive Learning), chronic & life-threatening diseases and relationship problems. Talking points: How his learning disability then led to other mental and emotional challenges like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) The importance of self-advocacy, even as a child The importance of parental support and listening to the child How “unconventional” solutions like biofeedback, meditation, and martial arts saved him The danger of labelling children with diagnoses rather than seeing them as whole people with needs due to underlying concerns The danger of treating all learning disabilities with a one-size-fits-all approach How he was originally “diagnosed” with being lazy since he really was brilliant in many areas even though his academic performance was low in others How there may be underlying issues like an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury (TBI) that are misdiagnosed if recognized at all That someone diagnosed with a learning disability may actually be neurodivergent and a genius, where they simply think differently. Frankly Speaking About Cancer with the Cancer Support Community
Grief can be complicated and confusing. Coping with the feelings that follow a loss can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be something from which we run away. In this episode, we sit down with Susan Ash Lee, Vice President, Clinical Services at CSC. Susan offers a compassionate exploration of this subject and insight into how we can help ourselves and our loved ones in the face of grief.
Host Jeremy C. In Episode 21 of Bladder Cancer Matters, host Rick Bangs talks with Kimberly Papay Rogers, PhD, the Director of Research at the Cancer Support Community. Rick and Dr. Rogers discuss her work on the Cancer Experience Registry, an online research survey that helps enhance cancer care, improve health care policies, and ensure support services better reflect the needs of people affected by cancer. They also discuss: What a cancer registry is Why bladder cancer was added to the registry Who can and should participate in the bladder cancer patient survey The findings' expected impact on bladder cancer treatment and experiences
A cancer diagnosis sucks no matter what — but factors like income, education, racism, geography, housing, and access to health care, known as "social determinants of health," can worsen the burden. When researchers zoom out from individual experiences and survey cancer survivors, they see patterns called social determinants of health. Individual circumstances such as economic stability, physical environment, racial bias, proximity to a provider, or fluency in that provider's language can influence a survivor's health outcome before any cancer treatment begins. In this episode, we share stories of cancer mavericks who rebelled against the foreshadowing of health disparities. 23-year survivor Mary P. Lovato started a support group at her pueblo in New Mexico that expanded to reach American Indian and Alaska Native tribes across the United States. After learning she had breast cancer at 31, Maimah Karmo made it her mission to advocate for young women, Black women, and those with metastatic disease — and to end health disparities in our lifetime. Finally, health disparities researcher Dr. Carmen Guerra shares how the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center nearly doubled the number of Black patients in its clinical trials.
