Ruth Bader Ginsburg was one of the pre-eminent jurists of her time; the second woman appointed to the US Supreme Court, she served for nearly 30 years and was a champion of gender equality and human rights protections. No small feat then, to bring such an intellectual giant to the stage, but that's what Australian playwright Suzie Miller has done in her show RBG: Of many, One. The play makes its New Zealand debut tomorrow night at Auckland's Waterfront Theatre after sold-out tours in Australia. Australian actress Heather Mitchell will stay in the role of RBG - as well as 33 other characters - in this one-woman performance. Suzie Miller is no stranger to legal storylines in her work - her play Prima Facie premiered in 2019 and has been seen in hundreds of productions in over 40 countries and adapted into more than 30 languages. The London and Broadway shows, both starring Jodie Comer, won a number of awards and a film is in the works. Suzie joins Kathryn to explain what it was about the life and work of 'Notorious RBG', as she was nicknamed, that drew her in.

Melissa is an actress, journalist and producer whose work expands way beyond acting. To the opera, working as a dramaturg, in advertising, cinema, television and leading workshops. Her training came from a number of institutions, one being Campagnia Finzi Pasca, a company she has collaborated with from a young age, the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York, and also with José Sinisterra in Barcelona. Campagnia Finzi Pasca uses resources of acrobatic movements and clown presences based on the “Theatre of Caress”, a concept developed by Daniele Finzi Pasca. Some of the most important things in her process as an actor are movement research and body expression. In helping actors develop their interpretations of the characters that they play. During this time she was also an assistant to the great director Elias Andreato, preparing actor Juca de Oliveira as King Lear among other great roles. Also with Campagnia Finzi Pasca she has also joined the dynasty of actors performing “Tessa” in Suzie Miller's Prima Facie. A play about the flaws in the legal system when it comes to women defending themselves in sexual assault cases. Making the point that even now, as we speak, more still needs to be done and something has to change. Melissa and I take a deep dive into Prima Facie, hearing about some of the surreal reactions she has had performing across Italy and Switzerland in recent months. In addition to discovering new things about the text that I never thought about before, and the show's global effect in helping numbers of people in more ways than one.Grazie Melissa! Oliver GowerSpotlight Link: https://www.spotlight.com/9097-9058-5261Instagram: @ollietheuncensoredcriticFor enquiries and requests: olliegower10@gmail.comPlease Like, Download and Subscribe ✍️Thank you all for your support!Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name. A fiercely original voice in Australian theatre, Sheridan Harbridge is an artist who moves fluidly between acting, writing and directing, and who thrives on the adrenalin of making new work. In this wide-ranging conversation, she speaks about her latest projects, including co-writing the book for the new Australian musical My Brilliant Career, based on the Miles Franklin novel, returning to the stage in Suzie Miller's Prima Facie, and bringing the electrifying life of Chrissy Amphlett to audiences in Amplified. At the centre is her deep commitment to telling stories that feel urgent, female-driven, and theatrically daring and that connect with audiences.Sheridan also reflects on the path that led her here, from a childhood in country Victoria, through her time at NIDA, to the lessons learned from a career built largely on original material. She speaks openly about the tolls and challenges that sit behind a good performance, and the responsibility of carrying stories that resonate far beyond the stage. Throughout, Sheridan is full of candour and wit, revealing a theatre maker driven to make work that leaves a lasting mark.My Brilliant Career shows at the Rosalyn Packer Theatre until May 3, then heads to the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre until May 17. Amplified: The Exquisite Rock and Rage of Chrissy Amphlett is on at the Seymour Centre on April 15-25. This is Part 7 in a series noting that 2025 is the 40th Anniversary of Harvard University Press' 1985 publication of Richard A. Epstein's "Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain." We continue our celebration of this anniversary with a fair use and transformative reading, continuing and now beginning chapter 4 in a new section which Richard calls ""Takings Prima Facia," which makes the analogy between private law takings in the common law harm tradition and the public law takings where the government is a defendant. He titles chapter "Takings and Torts," because he's taking a look at political philosophy and the American constitutional order, how these things interact using argument by analogy with the common law/private law tradition, ensconced as it is in the purpose of the Constitution. That moral purpose is the protection of individual liberty against claims by a simple majority in a democracy, or by the government in a taking of private property. Excellent stuff here. Excellent. Every college student should read this book. It's a superb introduction to the political philosophy of the American regime. Praise the Lord. We'd like to thank Harvard University Press for making this material available and Richard Epstein for writing it. Make sure you buy the book and follow along. It's very important for you to have your own copy on your own bookshelf, and to begin to master this material. Support your local book dealer.

Ele me disse: “Olha, é a peça do momento”. Comecei a me preparar e decorar no começo do ano, a partir de março. “A história é dolorida.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When lawyer turned playwright Suzie Miller created a one-woman show starring Jodie Comer for the West End and Broadway called ‘Prima Facie', she wouldn't have dreamt that her play would fuel real change in the legal system's approach to sexual assault cases.   The play has won multiple awards, has inspired efforts to change UK laws, and has also been turned into a novel.   In this episode of Ways to Change the World, Suzie Miller  tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy why rape victims are failed by the legal system, how trauma is misunderstood in the court room, and why a patriarchical system forces female barristers to become part of the problem.   Produced by Shaheen Sattar and Silvia Maresca.   WARNING: Contains references of sexual assault

Playwright Suzie Miller is best known for her award-sweeping masterpiece, Prima Facie, a searing critique of the criminal justice system and, specifically, how it deals with survivors of sexual assault and rape. She's now adapted the play into a novel, and so Jen was chuffed to bits to talk to her about the process of adaptation, as well as why she wrote it, the impact the play has had, and the sheer lunacy of a system that simply isn't fit for purpose. Also, Jodie Comer, who blew minds in the play, reads the audio book. Win.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
