Bowel Cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in people aged 25-50 years old in Australia.Being diagnosed as terminally ill at 3 months postpartum was not part of Kellie Finalyson's life plan. Growing up as healthy and happy, Kellie notes that cancer symptoms might have existed for 5 years prior to her diagnosis, but were often passed off as "just part of being a woman."Kellie had just welcomed her first child with her husband, Port Adelaide AFL player, Jeremy Finlayson. It was a time when she should have been enjoying the baby bubble and making special memories. Instead, she was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, told to stop breastfeeding immediately and forced to fight for her life. Today we discuss Kellie's journey to being diagnosed including a colonoscopy that was cancelled 18 months prior. She shares what it was like navigating her first year of motherhood whilst receiving chemotherapy at the same time, plus what it means to ‘trust your gut' and the symptoms of bowel cancer that everyone should be aware of. Today, we have a very special guest who just celebrated her 21 year anniversary living and thriving with stage four cancer. You may recognize Kris Carr from The Oprah Winfrey Show or as the New York Times Bestselling Author of I'm Not a Mourning Person. As a cancer survivor myself, I admit to being a longtime admirer (and stalker!) of Kris's work, even before my own diagnosis. Having followed Kris as an Oprah Super Soul 100 member, Kris revealed to me, and countless others, how she gained control of her anxiety after an incurable cancer diagnosis. In this candid conversation, we reflect on Kris's story, as a post-cancer survivor and thriver, and we celebrate her resilience and the recent milestone of her 21st anniversary since her stage four cancer diagnosis. As Kris shares her experience, she paints a picture of gratitude and stability, discusses the quirks of tumor behavior, and being able to find levity in life's most challenging moments. Visit whydidigetcancer.com for full show notes. --- This episode is sponsored in part by ButcherBox. I was SHOCKED to hear that when I buy frozen fish, it's frozen TWICE. It's usually frozen right after being caught, defrosted, processed, and then frozen again. I buy a lot of frozen fish; sometimes, the taste and texture can be inconsistent. Now that I have a better understanding of the processing of the fish before it hits my plate, it makes me wonder about quality. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery! After getting over my shock (yes, fooled again by the food corporations) I asked my BB friend if I could pretty-please offer free salmon to my community. She said yes, so if you use the code 'enos', you can get free salmon (2 pounds) free for a year and $20 off of your first box. https://www.butcherbox.com/enos --- Deb's Favorite Cleaning Products I have a newfound joy in doing dishes, and you can find all of my favorite cleaning products here! Jerry Rocha is a comedian and a damn good one. I met Jerry in 2015, right before I moved to LA. We became friends and like most LA comics didn't stay in touch all that great, just how it goes especially out here. Recently, I saw a clip of Jerry's online and while it was a hilarious joke it contained some not great news: Jerry had stage 4 cancer.
Please join me in welcoming Guy Tenenbaum. Six years ago, Guy was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, also known as metastatic cancer. This means the cancer had spread to at least one organ. People with stage 4 cancer are typically given a few weeks to a few months to live. A cancer cell comes from a normal cell that has damage in the mitochondria. The cancer cell adapts, takes alternative energy pathways, and can live without oxygen. When Guy was diagnosed 6 years ago, he was told there was nothing that could be done, that it was too late, and to enjoy the rest of his life. His cancer had spread to his bones, lymph nodes, and lungs. Guy explains that he didn't do any chemo or radiation because there was no treatment plan proposed to him. Guy discovered Thomas Seyfried's work and decided to see if it could help. He discovered the benefits of prolonged fasting and even completed a 40-day fast. Some people can do extended fasting, but if you're unable to comfortably fast, the fasting-mimicking diet may be beneficial. Guy continues researching new protocols and trying to stay one step ahead of highly adaptable cancer cells. In today's episode, we're talking about a topic that touches many of us but often stays hidden in the shadows: shame. Shame is this tricky little beast that can sneak up on us, especially when we're navigating the challenging waters of breast cancer recovery. It's more than just a fleeting feeling; it can actually have some serious effects on both our mental and physical health. It can crank up our stress and anxiety levels, making us feel like we're constantly walking on eggshells. I am blessed to have Dr. Rob Vasquez and Dr. Randy Johns here with me today. The Happy Healthy Guys are all about teaching people TRUE Health principles to help people live a Happy Healthy Life! After Johns recovered from late-stage cancer via integrative means, the two came together to become lifestyle entrepreneurs with the goal of empowering and equipping people with the tools necessary to live a happy, healthy life. The duo travels all over the country speaking and educating both regular people and doctors, informing them how to best take care of the body among all the confusion about what constitutes “healthy,” from nutrition and exercise to treating disease. In this episode, we cover weight loss and metabolism with Dr. Rob Vasquez and Dr. Randy Johns; they explain how health transcends the traditional understanding of calorie counting. In their exploration, they shed light on the multifaceted nature of metabolic health in modern society, emphasizing the influence of dietary quality, environmental toxins, and personalized interventions. Driven by their experiences and professional insights, they challenge the prevailing narrative by advocating for a deeper understanding of metabolic dysfunction and the necessity of prioritizing health over mere weight loss. Their holistic approach offers a paradigm shift towards sustainable wellness and lasting metabolic balance, redefining how we perceive and pursue health in contemporary life.
Last summer, Susan Skarbek of Vancouver, Washington was told she had stage 4 anal canal cancer with the tumor hitting her rectum and invading her vagina and two lymph nodes. She did one round of chemotherapy but refused to continue because of the side effects. She did numerous rounds of proton radiation but was told she faced radical surgeries if it didn't clear up. However, when she began using cannabis oil, and had a checkup a few weeks ago, doctors were shocked that her original tumor was gone.
“If we can have some real talk here, this is what I want to say.” So begins our conversation with Pac-12 Sports Broadcaster Tammy Blackburn, who is living with stage four metastatic breast cancer. In this episode, Tammy illuminates the reality of living with cancer, especially the parts we tend to overlook or consider impolite to discuss: She delves into the physical pain of treatment and then emotional pain of losing control of her body. She calls out the commercialization and sexualization of the breast cancer awareness movement. And, she shares the moment she learned she would never be able to have children. Listening to Tammy is like taking a masterclass in grace and honesty. Rather than running from reality, she has channeled her diagnosis into action, raising awareness and funds to combat this deadly disease. She loves fiercely and is fiercely loved in return (stick around until the end of the episode for first-hand testimony). While this episode tackled heavy topics, we ended it feeling lighter. In addition to real talk about death and sacrifice, we also discussed the power of play and the necessity of balancing seriousness with silliness. So, grab a hula hoop and some headphones and settle in for an inspiring hour with the inimitable Tammy Blackburn.--Find us on Instagram and YouTube. We love you all, and as always, thanks for being here.

The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer can lead to a powerful disconnect from the body. Many survivors feel betrayed by their own bodies and often that distance piles onto existing body image issues. Sadly, when we lose connection with our bodies, there's no way we can care for them in the ways necessary to support healing. We lose sight of the magical interplay of our biology and how every part of our system has an important role and how strong and vital our connection to nature is. Over recent decades this has led to a frightening reduction in the healthy biodiversity of the human gut. In this episode, I hope to help you understand the beautiful ecosystem that is your body, and how important it is to understand the simple steps you can take to support increasing your own biodiversity. Our gut health isn't just a matter of poo. Like the roots of a great tree is the foundation of the forest, our gut health affects our entire system, and getting to know and love how to support gut health can be a game changer for your body. If there's one thing I could change about the experience of breast cancer, (even though it's hard to pick only one) It would be the compulsion to hold everything in because of the fear of worrying or upsetting someone else. All emotions are a part of the human experience, and having the skill to express, process, and release negative emotions so that you have the space in your life to increase positive emotions is critical in the healing process. In this episode, I'll share a personal story with you that got me thinking about the pain we bring on ourselves when we won't express our struggles even to ourselves. I'll tell you some of the reasons why that happens, and I'll give you some ideas of how you can change that. We must work together to break the silent suffering that too many of us endure after a breast cancer diagnosis. Listen now and let's start that process. Today's episode is a special one for my fellow breast cancer survivors. We're going to explore the world of mitochondrial health, and the impact of synthetic fragrances, and discover how natural essential oils can support our metabolic health. Our focus begins with the mighty mitochondria, these tiny organelles are crucial for energy production, and we discuss how their health is vital, especially for breast cancer survivors. Then, we shift gears to discuss the hidden impact of synthetic fragrances. While these fragrances may seem harmless, they can have unseen effects on our health, particularly on our sensitive mitochondrial function. I share insights into how these synthetic elements can disrupt our body's natural processes and why being mindful of what we inhale is as important as what we eat or drink. We explore how natural fragrances not only uplift our spirits but also provide health benefits. From their mood-enhancing properties to respiratory benefits. If you're a breast cancer survivor or someone interested in holistic well-being, this is your invitation to learn, grow, and thrive.
