If the internet is an AYCE buffet of unlimited, endless options, there's bound to be items you find disgusting, that will make you physically ill. There's also bound to be items you find delicious AND nourishing and can't get enough of. But a majority of that buffet will be… fine. It will be mediocre filler foods that you don't remember eating at all. You may even fill yourself up on the “just okay ” foods and not realize how much better of a meal it could've been if you'd been more patient or critical with filling your plate. Not to say that mindless consumption isn't incredibly healing, sometimes.I just think it's become normal not to think about anything we engage with, and that can be more toxic than medicinal.It is not all bad, it is not all good, but it is not neutral either. It is what I make of it. It is a reflection of how I engage with it.It, like any tool, can be used as a weapon if we're not being conscious with how we wield it.This is why choosing to engage is such a powerful process.Deciding when it's too much, setting boundaries, creating realistic expectations, and being careful with not letting the algorithm co-opt my agency; all these take conscious effort.The key is staying present and conscious as often as you can.Engaging with shit because you want to, because you make the conscious choice to, not simply because it's there.I think a lot of us have become conditioned to believing “inconvenience is a barrier,” and in reality, on the other side of inconvenience is so much freedom and fulfillment.A healthy amount of resistance is what builds muscles, minds, and ideas. I accidentally ritualized something that is typically mundane, and that, in itself, is a magical and empowering act.Now, as much as I want to push society towards more “analog” and “slow” options because I genuinely think it would be good for us all to get off of these algorithms for good, it's not the only way to opt into more conscious consumption.“Consciously consuming” as a ritual, instead of a burden, can be applied to almost any aspect of life.When I take a moment to consider the vibe I'm seeking, before engaging with anything, I find myself being more critical with what I engage with. I also find the process to be ultimately more fulfilling and rewarding.If you are addicted to social media or streaming, this may be a difficult transition, but you don't have to change everything about your habits, right out of the gates.You can start with one intentional act a day. How do we feel like we're not being watched, when we are being watched?Studies show that citizens tolerate being surveilled, and eventually stop thinking about it. But we tend to act more docile + reliable after we forget. The camera makes you more docile. It makes you a better employee. But the camera has taken something from you. Your complex and unstable kinetic energy. Everyday it reanimates your body in predictable loops.” The first time I realized I was being surveilled without my knowing, was at my first job. Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shop. The rumor was they'd sit at home and watch us at work, but I didn't believe it. One day, I mopped the front when I received a phone call saying, “you only dipped the mop once, the dining room requires three dips for a proper cleaning.” Needless to say, 16 year old me was shook. I never mopped without doing it their way, again. I behaved differently on my shifts, from there on out. I feeling anxious and paranoid — but I'd completely forgotten about what caused it. I just thought, “this is what work feels like.” So it effectively shocked me into submission, with very little effort. The camera is a gun. It's about power. And we all recognize what the power a camera holds. A video at our worst moment, can get you fired, arrested, or harassed. We cope with this reality in our own ways. We stop going out, we stop dancing, we stop interacting. We participate as viewers who critique and judge. Or we pick up the power ourselves, and turn the camera + surveillance and judgement to those around us. I have tried to be conscious of any of the personally imposed surveillance that I take part in.It's futile, I'm sure, but: I opt out of everything I can possibly opt out of online. I talk shit to and about every Ring doorbell to anyone who will listen.I opt out of the biometric data collection at the TSA, despite some of the officers reminding me they have my data already. The point is, I like exercising my rights where the options still exist. Even if it is futile. And even if it is inconvenient for me, I'm not taking your online cookies. It deeply infuriates me that I'm not “allowed” to opt out of more. I can't use my phone, camera, printer, or any other piece of tech without signing the terms and conditions that hold your item (and your family) hostage unless you give up the rights to your entire personhood in a written contract. But you spend three paychecks on these items and it feels like a simple click will get you there, so you sign away without reading a damned thing. Everything I buy feels like just another way for a company to get more access to more of my personal data. The merchandise or service they provide is so obviously an inconvenience to them, at this point. Data is king. And for many companies, your attention has become far more valuable than cash. The thought experiment of a controlled demolition is very helpful, not because it's important to think of collapse, but because it can be empowering to remember your ability to rebuild better. Lately I've been avoiding arguments by asking people about their "mode of justification" rather than the justification, itself. It's helped me in my genuine curiosity, which allows me to be more respectful when dealing with people whose beliefs seem ridiculous. There's no formula or script, but asking "what evidence would change your confidence in the truth of this claim?" has changed my relationship with these types of conversations. Working from where we do agree, and meeting people where they are, and exploring alongside each other - to understand HOW they got to the belief, rather than attempting to singlehandedly debunk the belief. Being dysregulated is actually a sign of a healthy nervous system. You don't need to focus on staying "regulated" but instead, learn to listen to the signals that arrive when you do become dysregulated so you can focus on the root cause, instead of the symptoms. When we learn to listen to our feelings as information, we can decide which ones we need to address in real time. It's not about avoiding discomfort altogether, but getting curious about the causes + feelings associated with it so you can start aligning your actions with your values + find comfort in that, instead. Practice the standard addiction coping strategies: Make the desired habits more accessible + attractive. Make the habit you'd like to change less attractive + accessible. Practice mindful breathing work while you scroll. Practice ENGAGING with what you consume, instead of mindlessly consuming. Remember problem isn't the dopamine, it's typically the source... so make the sources you'd rather engage with more accessible + attractive for yourself. Instead, focus on the modifying the way you get your pleasure, instead of eliminating the pleasure itself. Dopamine is just one neurotransmitter responsible for our sense of pleasure + joy. We can't and shouldn't want to detox our dopamine levels. Dopamine is essential to motivating us to do everything from moving our bodies, to sleeping properly. I overthink things that don't require second thought. I suck the fun out of joyful activities by worrying about doing it "correctly" or "perfectly" or performing "well enough to not embarrass myself" yet... even when there is no audience, I find myself performing. The expectations take away the true joy that comes from "creating" and "play" and "love" and "fun" and I'm trying to pay attention to this tendency so I can sit with the discomfort of not knowing if I will do a good job or not, but committing anyway. have been trying to stop thinking of every single decision I make as some deep moral test. Every time I stay in the shower a little too long, or support a shitty company, or buy a product wrapped in single use plastic, isn't a condemnation of all of my character. I am not going to hell. I am not broken. I am not a piece of shit. I am a human being, set up to fail, but doing my best any-damn-way. It's not your job to save the world, but don't let yourself forget how fulfilling and important it can be to inconvenience yourself, on behalf of love, when the time is right. I try to only focus on doing the next, right thing. Which, naturally, will be based on the context, the situation, the energy, the capacity of everyone involved, etc. The key is balance and discretion, which I will call: alignment. Finding your purpose in life is like finding your favorite food at a brand new "all you can eat" buffet. You arrive hungry and excited, and everything looks pretty delicious. You try to fit a little bit of everything on your plate. You try tiny nibbles and some disappoint. Others surprise. Others are what you expect. And when it's time to go back up and try new things you know a littttle more and lose a lil initial excitement so you grab a lil of the things you missed the first time and so on. You keep tasting and trying. And you get pickier as you go. Recognize what isn't salted enough for you. What isn't spicy enough. What's too spicy. You get more of what works and less of what doesn't. Until eventually you get a full plate of all the things you love. When you eventually get hungry again and return to the buffet line? You'll know. But you can't be mad you didn't know on your first plate. Sure, you technically "wasted" room on the plate that could've been more mashed potato or whatever but you didn't know you liked the potato that much and if you started with a big plate of mash you'd be so jealous everyone else took a bite of something you hadn't tried yet. Now you know. So when you go and get the cake you know you love the most, and return to the table to find your mom loving her portion of the cobbler, you've already tried it yourself. You don't resent her for having cobbler you recognize you can get up at any time and get some. But right now you chose cake. And you know, you can always change it up for yourself in the future. The buffet of life is abundant. Don't get caught up in counting calories. Don't get caught up worrying about making the best choice. Don't get caught up optimizing your perfect meal.
