Enjoy this throwback episode (from day 872) before the new series drops on Monday! "There's a sucker born every minute." - P.T. BarnumCarl Sagan shares guidelines with us for how to critically think. Today, I share them with you! Critical thinking never goes out of style. especially when we consider how MUCH information we are forced to take in on a daily basis.Historically speaking, Never have people had so much information FORCED upon them - we gotta be diligent about how we learn new information so we're not falling victim to the Riff-raff. Curiosity is fragile. Learning is difficult as hell. Our brains are built for efficiency, not thinking. We can trick our brains into motivation by worrying about the difficulty of the challenge, rather than the topic or the content. We rely on our memories more than our thinking brain. According to Daniel Willingham's book, "Why Students Don't Like School?" "Thinking occurs when you combine information (from the environment and from long-term memory) in new ways. That combination happens in working memory." Some of the lessons I prioritize, still: Stop being so hard on yourself when you're struggling to learn or master or understand something new. You're actually doing a great job as a learner. You're exactly where you're supposed to be, trying, messing up, learning. If you knew already, you wouldn't be learning anymore. Learning is impossible to mess up, unless you give up. It's supposed to be challenging - but that doesn't have to mean frustrating. Take your time to be a learner. Tests are hard for some of us, but that doesn't mean you're dumb. Judge a fish by ability to climb a tree, and all that. And that's the beauty of math, right? There are many ways to get there, but there is one answer. It's tidy, if you're tidy. It's also why I hate math - because I am not the tidiest worker. I try to be, and am training myself to be so I can enjoy the process of things more, and actually invest in the process as much as the outcome, but when I was younger and sometimes still, I really don't have time for poorly worded instructions, and I tend to rush through shit if I don't see the point in it.Resources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Dirt in a cog is a way to embody resistance. It focuses on slowing down, jamming up, creating little bits of friction that make it difficult to keep attacking our citizens effectively. We need all types of resistance, don't think there are limits to your modes of resistance. Make fascism hard. Don't normalize the violence we're seeing. Keep showing your community + your country that you aren't going to lie down and watch it burn. You don't have to wait for one big act of revolutionary change to start pushing back. You can push back against the shift in everyday actions + choices, if you know where to look. Joy is part of the practice. When you can't find it and don't know where to start? Start small. Start by reminding yourself that joy still exists, and it's a frequency vibrating right above our heads, and if we can just poke our heads out of this damned hole, we can find it - tap into it, and use it like the resource it is. Pay attention to the glimmers that make you feel seen. The goal is to make the next best choice. Reclaim your agency by starting with fun, whimsy, and joy. Tactical frivolity is what happens when you use humor, whimsy, and joy to make those in power look ridiculous. It flips the script and reclaims agency. The optics matter, the message matters, and how the message arrives matters. So get involved, stop leaning into despair, and flip that damned script. Get some joy in your resistance. Our brains have a tendency to over-value the effect of TINY inconsequential differences when comparing options. Distinction bias is a cognitive bias that causes people to overestimate how different their options are when they compare them to each other rather than evaluating them independently, against some absolute standard. This bias often leads to an exaggerated perception of the differences between options. - ClearerThinking.orgDistinction Bias effects: https://www.clearerthinking.org/post/distinction-bias-definition-examples-and-effectsDistinction Bias Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinction_biasNir's take on Distinction Bias: https://www.nirandfar.com/distinction-bias/Reddit's solutions: https://www.reddit.com/r/adhdwomen/comments/1ig89cd/anyone_else_agonize_over_decisions_and_then_end/Resources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Friction is a type of resistance that leads to consideration, growth, and unique solutions. Without friction, we all flatten into the same, boring, identity. Also, friction doesn't "go away" it shifts. So, where you find a frictionless experience, it means that someone else had to take that on.Most importantly: Friction isn't the enemy. It is a valuable communicator, if we're willing to listen. The sources:https://rahultrikha.com/the-hidden-power-of-friction-why-resistance-creates-value-78b0441a066ahttps://kyla.substack.com/p/the-most-valuable-commodity-in-theResources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Sometimes, when you're dissociating effectively, and really "in the zone" of distraction? You can find ANY interruption to be an inconvenience. Even winning. I fear this is what has been happening to me when I lock into my phone too hard. Every interruption (even the good ones) feel like a shock to my system. Everything feels like a distraction. Learning why this happens has been really helpful in my ability to address the "infinite scroll loop" trap that I sometimes find myself in. Did you know that your* government has run official, formal, propaganda campaigns against its own citizens to spread disinformation. They have manipulated media, created bot account farms to sow discontent, and created smear campaigns - all in the name of "political strategy". We've discussed the "dead internet theory" a bit in the past, but today I want to remind you that is by design - and the people who profit off of you believing the internet is dead are grateful you don't look for the alive parts of it, that are still there + pushing back against the pollution + misinformation they are spreading. The internet is not trash. I think of it like thrifting. Most of it is trash, but there is the occasional treasure that is so worth sifting through the mountain of shit, you'd do it again in a heartbeat. But to find that good shit, you have to be intentional, pay attention to where your eyes go, stay curious and open, but never BUY anything without looking deeper - at the seams, at the little stains in certain light, at the source of the material. But sometimes you stumble upon work that is profound, and unique, and meant for your hands.) Is this metaphor too convoluted? Maybe. But the internet isn't dead. Shit, it's how we found each other. Today we're talking about #gamergate and how it can help us understand what has been going on in our culture, just beneath the surface. Understanding that has changed my perspective on how I address certain topics with people I engage with. "Leftists may have a better product to sell but conservatives know better how to two sell a product." Did you know? Some studies show that "right-leaning individuals" actually understand that "left-leaning individuals" are more morally sound in their foundations. This is why logic and rationalization is pointless. They don't need to be good. They don't need to be right. They aren't trying to win. They are trying to keep the argument going. The argument isn't supposed to end. They want to kick the can down the road, with no intention of recycling it. They are very good at convincing you it's in "good faith", when it is not. Don't engage. Recognize that the "high road" doesn't exist. We ALL have ideology that guides us. Developing a personal, social, and cultural ideology is an inescapable fact of life. So let's consider your consumer ideology for a minute: How much of it is yours? How much of it was pushed upon you? How much of it is manufactured by advertisements? Do you have any brands you feel "loyal" to? Why? Is it a superior product? A better price? Or does it appear to align with your ideology?Today's sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerismhttps://academic.oup.com/jcr/article/49/1/74/6358727?login=false#355249712https://business.columbia.edu/faculty/research/consumption-ideologyhttps://sserr.ro/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/sserr-10-2-145-149.pdfResources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. "Prosperity Preachers" target people who belong to a culture that encourages "blind faith" and a lack of questioning. They target those are harmed most by the system and demonize all services that could help them within that system. And then, they convince these "targets" that they can buy their salvation, health, wealth, material gains - through giving to "the church". Meanwhile, these pastors are running frauds so lucrative, they make Walter White's scheme seem like child's play. If you thought the church was safe from the cult of capitalism + culture of consumerism?Well, I hate to inform you, they're both victims + perpetrators of it.For example: Blessings in the form of financial gains/cars/houses/jobs. Tithing as a way to get closer to God. The church's exploitation of tax exemptions. Wealth disparities in the church. Grifters selling snake oil as a way to "heal". "Detaching our self-worth from our accomplishments is easier said than done. This difficulty stems, in part, from societal pressures that equate success with material wealth and professional achievements. Overcoming these pressures requires a conscious effort to redefine what success means on a personal level. "In contemporary consumer society, the purchase and the consumption of products have evolved beyond the mere satisfaction of basic human needs,[1] transforming into an activity that is not only economic but also cultural, social, and even identity-forming.""Today, people are universally and continuously being exposed to mass consumerism and product placement in the media or even in their daily lives. The line between information, entertainment, and promotion of products has been blurred, thus explaining how people have become more reformulated into consumerist behaviors. Shopping centers are a representative example of a place where people are explicitly exposed to an environment that welcomes and encourages consumption."The Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerism#:~:text=In%20contemporary%20consumer%20society%2C%20the,%2C%20and%20even%20identity%2Dforming.Resources for Resisting a Coup: https://makeyourdamnbed.medium.com/practical-guides-to-resisting-a-coup-b44571b9ad66SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!): https://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bedDONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund: www.pcrf.netGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Consumerism is addicting, attractive, seemingly Language of economists + violence. Consumerism has literally seeped into every crack of our lives. Socially? It's always been a signifier of success. How good of a job, how much money you make, never what a difference you've made or contributions to the greater good. But it's deeper than that. Brands are so worshipped in this country ( A 2019 UK study has revealed 83% of children between the ages of five and 16 can't identify a bumblebee. “How are we going to fall in love with the world if we don't pick berries?” — Robin Wall KimmererDivest from a culture of consumerism. Don't shame yourself here, because well… you get it… and though there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, it doesn't mean there isn't less and more ethical choices. And I recommend that each and every one of us occasionally check in with our current consumerism habits. How much online shopping do you do? Maybe you can reasonably cut back on at one or two purchases this month? But not just our literal shopping habits need evaluation. Death of the middle class: What is it: Anyone who has had to work to pay for rent, bills, food, etc. How to reestablish it: Corporate regulation, People over profit, Wage theft prosecution (no more deferred accountability loopholes), etc. (the upcoming series will contain specific examples)What's killing it: A system that prioritizes profits over people means: Catering to the wealthy and eliminating services + experiences for the middle class.Eliminating the working class from every direction. Culture, economics, sustainability, livelihoods, nothing is safe. Wage theft is the largest form of theft even if you take all of the other forms of theft that exist, combined. So they're stealing our money, benefiting from corporate bailout loopholes that they lobbied for, which means their own workers are paying taxes into the system that robs them of their own profits, and THEN Pricing us out with an increase in taxes, wage theft, and manufactured inflation. They've privatized or are in the process of fully privatizing everything: Prisons, Healthcare, Vet care, Wellness, Dialysis, Education, Housing, Politics, and the land itself… literally everything that should be in the best interest of the public and the world at large has been bought and sold to the highest bidder. But it is not hopeless. What is manufactured can be restructured. We can fight back, if we're strategic and conscious of the ways in which they're attacking us. This is psychological warfare, only when we recognize this, can we begin to push back + defend ourselves against these attacks. Maybe it's Doughnut Economics or resourcebasedeconomy.org or degrowth or Progressive Utilization Theory (PROUT) or Economic Democracy or Participatory Economics or Economy for the Common Good or Firewall Economics, or maybe it's some combination of all of these models. Either way? We've got options + well thought out alternatives to our current corrupted system, and that makes me feel pretty damn good. It seems like there's nowhere to focus lately except on the crumbling of America's foundation, but that disregards the fact that America's foundation was never secure, safe, or fair + at some point, the bottom was going to fall out. It's unfortunate, the manner in which it did, but it was only a matter of time. And it makes sense that the bad guys got to it first, because the good guys would have wanted to do it safely and consciously, but because the bad guys called out the flawed system first, they get to exacerbate those flaws for their own personal gain until the good guys get enough momentum on their side to reclaim the ground and restore some justice and rebuild on a more solid/equitable/healthy foundation. America has always been built to protect the elite/wealthiest/most racist/performative heteronormative white man's property and never ever had the interest of the working people in mind.If you have to work for a paycheck, you are the masses that the laws were meant to police. As the hilarious and very real Brennan Lee Mulligan once said “Laws are threats made by the dominant socioeconomic-ethnic group in a given nation. It's just the promise of violence that's enacted and the police are basically an occupying army. You know what I mean?”Which brings me to the also relevant wendigoon quote: “And remember kids, the next time that somebody tells you, "The government wouldn't do that," oh yes they would.”Capitalism is a racket that is built to fail. Like a snake eating its own tail, there is only so much growth/exploitation/looting/violence you can get away with before you start to generate some pushback. Often I tend to exacerbate my problems by incapacitating myself with shame. Sometimes it helps to combat this thinking with psychologically verified strategies, but most of the time it's easier to simply change my environment. Leaving the room I got overwhelmed in, is sometimes more effective a tool than trying to change my mindset in that room. Utopia feels far away, post-scarcity feels less so.According to wikipedia: Post-scarcity is a theoretical economic situation in which most goods can be produced in great abundance with minimal human labor needed, so that they become available to all very cheaply or even freely.[1][2] Post-scarcity does not mean that scarcity has been eliminated for all goods and services but that all people can easily have their basic survival needs met along with some significant proportion of their desires for goods and services.[3] Writers on the topic often emphasize that some commodities will remain scarce in a post-scarcity society.RESOURCES: https://lorenzopieri.com/post_scarcity/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-scarcity DONATE: https://www.pcrf.net/ GET INVOLVED: Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. When things become familiar to us, we no longer acknowledge them. The drone of cicadas in the background becomes impossible to hear unless you're really listening. The pile of papers on the table becomes impossible to see unless you're reminded they need to move. Things that no longer pose a threat, become obsolete to our focus. This is the same thing that happens with “the good stuff”. There is good stuff buzzing all around us, all day, every day. But because it doesn't pose a threat, our brains set it aside as safe, and eventually we start to ignore the good altogether. Sometimes the change is the thing we notice + we tend to emphasize the discomfort we feel from the transition, rather than the comfort we receive once we're settled into the change.DONATE:www.pcrf.netGet Involved:Operation Olive Branch: Spreadsheets + LinksGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Choice freedom is the idea that any choice a woman makes is inherently feminist, but it's missing a LOT of context and ignores real consequences as a result.
