POPULARITY
Friends of the Rosary, We joyfully honor the Immaculate Mary during May, not just a day but the entire month, with daily recitation of the Rosary and other devotions. The Ancient Greeks dedicated May to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. The Christians improved this practice by honoring the truly Mother of God. The idea of a month dedicated specifically to Mary is traced back to Baroque times. The custom became widespread during the nineteenth century and remains in practice until today. Many faithful erect a special altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder. It's a tribute to her beauty and virtue. It's also a standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary — a custom known as May Crowning. Mary, cause of our joy, is everyone's mother. She cares for all of us without fail, interceding in even the tiniest matters. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New York • May 7, 2024, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Episode written & produced by Alexandra Strauss Depending on your religious affiliation, the month of May holds significance for upholding religious celebrations. You could celebrate the goddess of spring or Mary, the Mother of God. For some countries, May even holds significance for laborers and the working class with International Workers’ Day. Beltane is a traditional Celtic ritual that is celebrated on the first of May. May Day is a Catholic celebration that is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, the Virgin Mary. Many Catholic churches host a May Crowning in honor of Mary, and Catholic schools took up the practice of having a girl from the oldest grade crown Mary. I even crowned Mary for my eighth grade May Crowning!... Mercyhurst College held May Day events from 1932 until 1968! I’m your host, Alex, for today’s Hurstories episode on May Day!
The beauty and challenge of Advent is to make room for Christ. We are called to be intentional with our time and to create intentional spaces that open us to his coming. On today’s show, we will explore traditional Advent practices of time and space with my friend and colleague, Carolyn Pirtle. Carolyn is the program director of the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy, here in the McGrath Institute for Church Life. She oversees the planning and facilitation of the Center’s signature events, including the annual summer symposium (“Liturgy Week”), and other annual events like the Marian Procession and May Crowning, and one of the topics of today’s show: the International Crèche Exhibit and Pilgrimage. She also happens to have a lot of degrees, including a master’s in music theory-composition, another master’s in sacred music, and a third master’s in theology. She brings all that wisdom and experience here to join me, Leonard DeLorenzo, on Church Life Today. ------ Live: www.redeemerradio.com Follow Redeemer Radio on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @RedeemerRadio Follow McGrath Institute for Church Life on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @McGrathND Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes | Google Play | SoundCloud
