Deb Nevins, Director of Product Strategy at POCN, emphasizes the expanding role and importance of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Associates in the American healthcare system.  These professionals have evolved from being an extension of the physician to becoming autonomous clinicians who handle a wide range of patient care, including diagnosing, prescribing, and creating treatment plans for a significant portion of the patient population. In many cases, NPs and PAs are filling care gaps in rural and underserved areas and applying a more holistic approach to healthcare in an increasingly virtual healthcare environment. Deb explains, "POCN is an organization that has been around for over 10 years now. It started really with the mission to support nurse practitioners and physician associates and help them practice at the top of their license. And we do that multiple ways, but specifically we like to say it's a learn, earn, care, and connect model. So we provide educational insights to them. We allow them to connect with each other on our platforms, and we also bring them forward to pharmaceutical companies to help them better understand the role that they play in patient care today."   "Well, it's really interesting because both nurse practitioners and physician associates have really stepped up their responsibilities and roles since the timeframe when COVID started, where there was such a backlog. So they used to be thought of as more physician extenders or as mid-levels, but we can no longer say that. So nurse practitioners, physicians, and associates will handle everything with patient care from the initial intake, counseling, diagnosing, creating the treatment plan, prescribing medications, doing the follow-up, and ensuring that they're managing during side effects or anything like that that might happen. They support the patient with access challenges as they try to get their medications. So they basically do almost everything that a physician, an MD or a DO would do, except that they're not doing surgery or they're not doing super complex cases, but they have autonomy."  #ElevatingCare #VoicesInCare #PatientsFirstCare #POCN #WomenInHealthcare #VisibilityMatters #HealthcareLeadership #AmplifyNPs #AmplifyPAs pocn.com Download the transcript here

Private Affluence and Public Squalor: Social Injustice and Economic Misery in America Paul L Nevins Privateaffluenceandpublicsqualor.com Amazon.com Are the values that Americans collectively hold destroying the American Dream? The answer to that question depends upon the answers to some very specific questions. What do we as citizens of the United States believe we owe to one another as citizens? What is the purpose of government? What is of the role of the private enterprise? What is the meaning of equal opportunity? To what extent should purely economic concerns be regulated in the public interest? The answers to these questions reveal our values and define the role that each of us chooses to play as a participant in our country's political and economic affairs. As the role of government in the economic life of the nation has become increasingly diminished, the effort to create a market economy that is unfettered by public oversight and regulation has emerged triumphant—to the detriment of the values that we should share as citizens.

Benjamin Grierson's Union cavalry thrust through Mississippi is one of the most well-known operations of the Civil War. There were other simultaneous operations to distract Confederate attention from the real threat to Vicksburg posed by U. S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee, but Grierson's operation, mainly conducted with two Illinois cavalry regiments, has become the most famous, and for good reason. For 16 days (April 17 to May 2) Grierson led Confederate pursuers on a high-stakes chase through the entire state of Mississippi, entering the northern border with Tennessee and exiting its southern border with Louisiana.  The daily rides were long, the rest stops short, and the tension high. Ironically, the man who led the raid was a former music teacher who some say disliked horses. Throughout, he displayed outstanding leadership and cunning, destroyed railroad tracks, burned trestles and bridges, freed slaves, and created as much damage and chaos as possible. Grierson's Raid broke a vital Confederate rail line at Newton Station that supplied Vicksburg and, perhaps most importantly, consumed the attention of the Confederate high command. While Confederate Lt. Gen. John Pemberton at Vicksburg and other Southern leaders looked in the wrong directions, Grant moved his entire Army of the Tennessee across the Mississippi River below Vicksburg, spelling the doom of that city, the Confederate chances of holding the river, and perhaps the Confederacy itself.   Novelists have attempted to capture the large-than-life cavalry raid in the popular imagination, and Hollywood reproduced the daring cavalry action in The Horse Soldiers, a 1959 major motion picture starring John Wayne and William Holden. Although the film replicates the raid's drama and high-stakes gamble, cinematic license chipped away at its accuracy. Based upon years of research and presented in gripping, fast-paced prose, Timothy B. Smith's The Real Horse Soldiers: Benjamin Grierson's Epic 1863 Civil War Raid through Mississippi captures the high drama and tension of the 1863 horse soldiers in a modern, comprehensive, academic study. This talk, based on the book, will bring you along for the ride.   Timothy B. Smith (Ph.D. Mississippi State University, 2001) is a veteran of the National Park Service and currently teaches history at the University of Tennessee at Martin. In addition to numerous articles and essays, he is the author, editor, or co-editor of more than twenty books with several university and commercial presses. His books have won numerous book awards, his trilogy on the American Civil War's Tennessee River campaign (Forts Henry and Donelson, Shiloh, and Corinth) winning a total of nine book awards. In this episode of Design Vault, Doug speaks with John Woelfling, Principal at Dattner Architects at in New York City. Visit glengery.com/design-vault to see photos and additional information as you listen along.Located in downtown Brooklyn, 50 Nevins Street appears to be two buildings in one. The approach was to reinvigorate a century-old building through gut renovation and addition, which provides affordable housing, housing for formerly homeless individuals, and mental health services. The historic site, with its new ten-story addition, features 129 new apartments. The building was originally designed by famed Brooklyn architect Frank Freeman, opened in 1913 as a YWCA. In the early 1930s an extensive portion of the building was shaved off to enlarge Schermerhorn Street and make way for the subway line. That adjustment resulted in an imbalance to the original Colonial Revival building. The new coupled design ascribes value to the existing building and helps restore the balance it had lost. The existing red brick building remains shorter with a classical cornice. The new building sits slightly taller, flush and adjacent with a recessed connector which visually separates the architecture. The contrast in masonry color, dark connector and stylistic changes to the forms and facades set the two buildings apart esthetically, though clearly they're co-combined.
