AI, Assessments & A-Graders: A Student's POV What happens when AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's VEO3 land in the hands of curious, creative high schoolers? In this episode, we talk with Caitlyn, a Year 11 student from Sydney, who gives us a front-row seat to how students are really using AI in school right now. From refining English essays with high-modality language to producing eye-catching videos that bring creative writing to life, Caitlyn shows how AI has become her on-demand study buddy, grammar coach, and even a research assistant. She unpacks how her school's “traffic light system” guides ethical AI use and reveals what happens when students take ownership of the tools and the learning. Caitlyn's perspective offers a grounded, inspiring look at the future of learning with AI. Links Caitlin's VEO3 video for the creative writing exercise, that created the change momentum. This winter, inspired by cool bookish tournament projects by Melissa Alter Smith of Teach Living Poets and Jared Amato of Project Lit, I decided to launch my own English teacher-y tournament. I wanted to know - of the hundreds of amazing books out there - which were working BEST in the classroom for the teachers in our community? After polling over 2000 teachers over in Creative High School English for their favorites in 9th/10th grade (11th and 12th grade coming soon!), I landed on 16 great titles and we've been voting ever since. Today on the pod, I'll be sharing the top titles and some of the comments and rationales teachers have shared along with their votes. If you're looking for a new book for your curriculum, or you're curious what other teachers are focusing on in theirs, today's show will help! As part of our special series on alternative models of education, I'm sitting down with Michael Fitzgerald, principal of Northern Schoolhouse, an upstate New York private school focused on classical literature and art, immersion in nature, and nurturing strong moral character based on time-tested virtues.“This is the trend in education: ‘It doesn't matter what you're reading, as long as you're reading.' And I actually disagree with that. I think it's very important what you're reading,” Fitzgerald says.“In the end, we want them becoming autonomous people who know how to move themselves well through the world, as truly good people who recognize beauty,” he says.“If you recognize beauty, you can recognize what's good. And those are highly correlated in the classical world, especially in the Socratic sense. They talk a lot about truth, beauty, and goodness.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
