In this episode of "Aging with Grace," DG shares a heartfelt and educational look into lichen sclerosis, a condition that often goes undiagnosed and can cause significant suffering, especially in women over 40. Using a personal narrative, DG highlights the confusion, embarrassment, and challenges people face when seeking a diagnosis, as well as the relief proper treatment can bring. The episode dives into the autoimmune roots and symptoms of lichen sclerosis, touching on why awareness and open discussion are so important within our communities.Beyond the medical overview, DG provides useful background on the evolution of topical steroid treatments and their role in managing the condition. There's also a thoughtful exploration of the adrenal glands—how they work, affect stress, and might be indirectly linked to flare-ups. DG wraps up with practical self-care tips for adrenal health (like nutrition, sleep, and reducing stress), and encourages listeners to spread awareness and connect for support. If you're interested in health education, personal stories, and living well as you age, this episode is full of helpful info and encouragement. This is DG and I would love to hear from you!Connect with Aging With Grace®️ at agingwithgraceinfo.org

One of my brave patients shares her story with lichen sclerosis from being dismissed and told it was "all in her head" to finding proper treatment and relief.I'll never forget the day Jess walked into my office. By the time she found me, she'd already been dismissed by multiple doctors including specialists at what was supposed to be one of Chicago's premier women's health centers. They told her the severe pain and skin changes she was experiencing were "all in her head." Two different physicians suggested she needed a therapist, not medical treatment. Her depression history was weaponized against her, used as proof that she was just being hysterical. But Jess wasn't hysterical. She had advanced lichen sclerosis, and her vulvar skin was literally fusing together. Had she not found proper treatment, she would never have been able to have penetrative sex again. Even worse, without treatment, her risk of vulvar cancer would have climbed from 1% to 3-5%. Yet nobody had explained any of this to her. She'd been handed a tube of clobetasol and essentially told to figure it out herself which she did, on YouTube, learning the proper application technique that her doctors never bothered to teach her.In this episode, Jess bravely shares her journey living with lichen sclerosis—from the devastating experience of being gaslit by female physicians to finding relief through injectable steroids and surgical lysis of adhesions. We talk about how her symptoms worsened when she entered menopause in her mid-40s (common with autoimmune conditions), the complete loss of libido that left her sobbing when a doctor said "it's never coming back," and the body changes that made her feel like a "potato."But this conversation is about more than just lichen sclerosis. It's about the failures of our healthcare system, the importance of advocating for yourself even when you're furious and exhausted, and learning to accept yourself exactly where you're at. Jess's story will resonate with anyone who's ever been dismissed, anyone struggling with vulvar health issues, and anyone navigating the chaos of menopause while trying to hold onto their sense of self-worth.Highlights:Why most gynecologists miss lichen sclerosis (hint: they're not actually looking at your vulva). The proper way to apply clobetasol that doctors don't teach. How vaginismus became a catch-all diagnosis for any woman with painful sex.The We Do Not Care Club movement and redefining your value at midlife. What it means when influencers are the face of menopause marketing. If you've been dismissed or told your vulvar symptoms are "all in your head," this episode validates your experience and shows you're not alone. And if you're a clinician, this is your wake-up call we can no longer dismiss women's symptoms as psychological when real physical disease is staring us in the face. Please share this with someone who needs to hear that their symptoms are real and treatment is available.Get in Touch with Me: WebsiteInstagramYoutubeSubstack

I enjoyed it thoroughly and did purchase the book. The one thing they mentioned that I do wrong is I love shellfish. I live in MD so I do have crabs but not frequently. In general I do eat shrimp once a week and scallops once or twice a week. Can you give me your thoughts on if we need to remove scallops? I read they aren't scavengers. I do your quarterly detox. Would you recommend I do your parasite protocol and how often? Interested in your opinion and advice how to offset the toxins from shellfish. I can't give it up totally. Thank you! Kai: Hello! Thank you for all you do. I am currently finishing up my IHP Level 2 and I'm excited to help people! Im 3 months postpartum and dealing with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). A lichen is a colony of algae or cyanobacteria living interactively with fungus and bacteria in a mutual or symbiotic relationship, but for Steve Leavitt, a lichen is a hotspot of diversity and an indicator of ecological health. Steve is in charge of one of the largest lichen collections in North America at BYU where he teaches and directs the Life Science Museum. But most of all, Steve loves his research and being outside. We talk with Steve about how the unique factors on the Colorado Plateau contribute to diverse lichen communities, how lichens can be used as indicators of air quality, and the impacts of climate change on their distribution. Steve explains how advancements in genetics have led to a step-change in the study of lichens and the broader implications of studying lichens for understanding life on Earth.

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Allison: As an IHP I have a question that has come up for a few clients. Although most people do great with 1-2 full droppers of liquid melatonin why can it cause nightmaresor vivid dreams for some? Oliver: Hi Dr Cabral, can you tell me anything about Lichen Planus? My dad has it in his mouth, causing it to be very sensitive to temperature, acid and spice. My mum has it on her head causing hair loss. Do you know what the root cause is and if there is anything that can be done to help? Al: Dr. Cabral. I don't have any real health or weight issues and would like to support my body to stay that way. Once a year, I do AIP dietary protocol (just fish, poultry, broth, vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, olive & coconut oil) for a month, but no supplements. Could you please suggest annual supplements that are the most economical for a healthy male in early 40's. Could herbs like milk thistle, dandelion, NAC (for liver support), oregano, thyme, clove oils (for anti-bacterial/parasitic support) and maybe chlorella (for heavy metal detox) be taken together during that one month of AIP annually? Or would it be better to take some during AIP and others in a different time of a year? I eat and live clean during the whole year, but don't have funds for any labs. Please advise, thank you. Mike: Hello Dr.Cabral. I have tried your liver detox, parasite cleanse, CBO and then heavy metal detox. My health is pretty great by now and since I would like to keep it that way, I am considering annual maintenance protocols. Since I don't want to be on some sort of detox almost every other month (quarterly liver, parasite cleanse, heavy metal detox), can I combine them to make it simpler for me? Lets say spring one month liver support + heavy metals and autumn one month liver support + parasite cleanse? Would that work? Thank you. Eleazar: Hello dr cabral i would like to know if everyone with autoimmune diseases need to avoid gluten permanently i have heard u say in people with celiac disease it does need to be avoided permanently and even in people with hashimoto because it acts as a perpetrator antigen could u explain what that means and if i need to avoid gluten forever regardless of what autoimmune disease i have or does it apply to only people with celiac or hashimoto thank you so much for everything u do. This is a regular complaint from gardeners: Lichen on the stems of our shrubs, trees and bark. In this case: Julie's treasured Magnolias. It kind of makes sense as the shrub or small tree often appears to have more lichen than leaves – mostly smallish buds, not large, impressive flowers. And few leaves that often look small and somewhat discoloured. No wonder gardeners are concerned about Lichen! Here are the identified species of lichen on our Magnolia: Cartilage Lichen and Common Sunburst Lichen. Lichen do not live in or from the plants – they don't invade the plants or steal nutrients, they just sit there on the branches in the sun. Often the more light or sun there is, the healthier the lichens are. Gardeners often think that the plants' lack of health is due to the presence of lichen but a far more accurate diagnosis is exactly the opposite. Shrubs and trees which are not in the most perfect place (with the best sun or shade) or with a minimal amount of healthy fertilisers or moisture are struggling to keep their growth rates in maximum condition. The lichen simply takes advantage of increased sun and light. Here is just one example that shows how lichen (in this case many different species) literally establish themselves on tiled roofs. The lichen do not have “roots” to get inside the tiles, or “feed” from the tiles. They therefore don't damage the surface they live on. Lichen is not a plant, but a symbiosis of two or three organisms that work together: fungi and blue-green algae (often Cyanobacteria) and yeasts. The fungus can store water for “the TEAM” and is the home of the algae. The algae can do photosynthesis and shares the sugars with the fungi. They all work together for the past 600 million years on Earth “WHEN LIFE CAME OUT OF THE OCEAN… THERE WAS LICHEN!” These lichen grow on metal, windscreen glass, and asphalt – known as Sexy Pavement Lichen. What happens when a retired Air Force veteran, therapist, and lifelong outdoorswoman finally faces the thing that haunted her childhood — and realizes it's been watching her family for generations? In this chilling and heartfelt episode, we sit down with K, who takes us from rural Louisiana and Texas to the shadowed forests of Washington. You'll hear about Sasquatch staring through a farmhouse window, heavy breathing outside a summer trailer, a tree shaking so violently it erased all doubt, and the moment in the Olympic National Forest when lichen fell from the creature's shoulders as it revealed itself. From Caddo Lake to Glacier Peak, from mysterious crow-like calls to perfect circles of feathers, this is a journey of fear, trauma, healing, and a lifetime of encounters that will leave you questioning what walks among us.

The weed purslane appears to not only be the safest treatment available for the autoimmune disease lichen planus, but the most effective, too.
I am so excited to share this conversation with Dana Hutchinson! I really identified with her herbal path – like me, as a young person she suffered from a debilitating autoimmune condition, and it was through her search for healing that she found herbalism. As a clinical herbalist herself now, she offers so much hope for others in similar situations. Dana had so much to share about one of the first herbs that she worked with to help her overcome her illness, jujube dates (Ziziphus jujuba). This delicious, nourishing herb has so many gifts! Here are just a few ways jujube dates can benefit your health:► As a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants► Nourishes the blood, promotes healthy circulation, and supports the liver► As a gentle ally for dealing with emotional trauma and a dysregulated nervous systemTo learn more about jujube's medicinal benefits, be sure to check out the entire episode! You'll also hear all about how Dana works with jujube to support clients with the autoimmune condition lichen sclerosus (the same illness that started her on her herbal path), including her fantastic recipe for Lichen Sclerosus Decoction. You'll find a beautifully-illustrated recipe card for it here.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What makes jujube such a helpful herbal ally for a wide variety of health conditions—including poor circulation, autoimmunity, and nervous system burnout► Tips for sourcing jujube dates► How to prepare jujubes to maximize their medicinal benefits► Why jujube dates are often beneficial to include in immune formulations► and so much more…For those of you who don't know her, Dana is a registered herbalist and mentor with the American Herbalist Guild and is the owner of Wildflower Clinic, a Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western clinical herbalism health center in Golden, Colorado. Dana and her team pride themselves on TCM diagnosis where they interpret the pulse, nails, skin, and tongues of clients in the autoimmune, infertility, and emotional trauma space, both in-person and virtually. Dana is also a faculty member at the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism and an advanced course educator at the Herbal Academy. The Wildflower Clinic is one of the only herbal clinics in the world that alternatively supports the autoimmune condition lichen sclerosus, with botanical, lifestyle, and supplemental recommendations that have helped hundreds of women reach remission.I can't wait to share our conversation with you today!----Get full show notes and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comFor more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow @rosaleedelaforet on Instagram!Working successfully with herbs requires three essential skills. Dana was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition called Lichen Sclerosus in 2012 shortly after learning her mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. With Western harsh topical steroids and estrogen creams making things worse and covering up underlying systemic issues, Dana looked to eastern medicine to begin repairing her condition, and within 3 months, she began to feel vital, hopeful, and motivated that recovery was possible. In one year, Dana's extreme case of LS was in full remission. Now supporting LS clients for over a decade with comprehensive herbal medicine protocols, Dana has produced a potent herbal oil clinically tested and formulated to target the debilitating symptoms of LS. We chat about what Lichen Sclerosus is, why she thinks LS is being diagnosed at an alarming rate, how she assesses it at the Wildflower Clinic, lifestyle recommendations for those with autoimmunity, resources for those with LS and a whole lot more. This was in incredibly informative interview and I hope you get a lot out of it. Big thanks to Dana for joining me on the show, and thanks to y'all for tuning in. Last October, Ira Flatow took a trip to the World Forestry Center in Portland, Oregon, for a daylong exploration of lichen—the fuzzy growths often found on trees, roofs, and gravestones. Ira sat down in front of a sold-out room with Dr. Hannah Prather, postdoctoral researcher and visiting assistant professor of biology at Reed College, and Dr. Jesse Miller, lead botanist for the Washington Natural Heritage Program. From their crucial role in ecosystems as indicators of air quality to their striking colors and forms, we've really taken a lichen to these amazing organisms.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
