Listeners of Among Women Podcast that love the show mention: pat's podcast,A Holy Week episode that talks about the extraordinary graces that come to us through Jesus, the Divine Mercy. I'm specifically going to focus on trusting Jesus for his mercy, the link between the prayers of Mary's fiat and the simple prayer, "Jesus, I trust in You". I'll also share the encouraging prayer titled "Eternal God of Endless Mercy." (Check out all the resources below on this much-needed topic in our lives and in today's world.) Welcome to Episode 47 of the Among Women “Espresso Shot” – a short strong coffee break of faith sharing and teaching from Pat Gohn. Today's topic: Nunc Coepi In this espresso shot, I describe the spiritual principle of Nunc Coepi, a Latin phrase that translates as "Now I begin." This is especially meaningful as we live through Lent. It addresses our need for courage and perseverance as we face difficulties, trials, or failures. Also, on a personal note, I relate some of my recent health issues that led to an unexpected hiatus from the podcast, as it relates to this topic. It is a joy to be back! A mid-summer podcast about one of the most important subjects for a Christian—our prayer life! This topic is dear to my heart and you'll find many related podcasts (listed below) that I hope you'll investigate if you have time. The care and feeding of your soul comes from a life of prayer that is coupled with sanctifying grace found in the sacraments, chief among them—the Eucharist. Today's focus on prayer comes from my conversation with author and blogger, and longtime friend, Barb Szyszkiewicz, who brings us a new book, The Handy Little Guide: PRAYER. I recommend Barb's book not only for yourself, but as a gift for others. It's short and an economical purchase, too. It's the latest in The Handy Little Guide Series from Our Sunday Visitor. In our saint segment, we power up with inspiration, wisdom and advice and drawn from several saints on the how-and-why's about prayer. So much good stuff, below. Be sure to check out the book and the related podcasts! Ramping up for the feast of the Sacred Heart on June 11, we're diving deep into devotion of the Sacred Heart with author and speaker, Emily Jaminet. Her latest book is called Secrets of the Sacred Heart: Twelve Ways to Claim Jesus' Promises in You Life and it is absolutely red hot wisdom on the subject. You'll also learn about enthroning the Sacred Heart in your home or elsewhere. One of my favorite stories that Emily tells is about a lonely woman whose experience of isolation during the pandemic was transformed by this devotion. Oh, there's so much more! I also give a short read from the book on the life of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque whom Jesus used mightily to bring this devotion, eventually, to the world. In the past year, I've been trying to avoid burnout. The coronavirus pandemic has brought scheduling challenges and changes that have required me to take a harder look at discerning how I spend my time. What am I saying "yes" to —in terms of my use of time? Keeping my calendar in front of Jesus, and keeping a daily prayer time, and keeping Sundays holy—and as a day of joy—have been life-saving. Trusting Jesus with my calendar is key, whether its job related stress, or what I'm cooking in the kitchen this week. That's why I'm talking to Rachel Balducci, author of Overcommitted: Cut Chaos and Find Balance. Our identity is not about what we do, but who we are in Christ. Rachel's message calls us to greater holiness first, and doing what God wants us to do. I also share about a Franciscan founder of two religious orders in the U.S. and Germany, Blessed Frances Scherviers. Frances was a woman who used her time well, helping to invite troubled women into a life with Christ. This episode is a departure from our usual format. It’s been a few weeks since my last podcast and in that time the United States has taken many measures to attempt to curb the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. This has been a difficult time for many people. Most difficult for Catholics has been the temporary suspension of public Masses. Given that this is Lent I exhort you to lean into prayer even more — but especially as we pray against and through this pandemic. The Stations of the Cross is a traditional Catholic devotion. I encourage you to make it your own. This podcast captures my own prayer, my own reflections on the Stations. I hope it will be something we can pray together. Today’s topic: The Beatitudes – “Blessed are the meek.” In this espresso shot, I examine the third Beatitude from Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This podcast examines continues to explore the inspiration we have in Jesus with respect to the Beatitudes as it applies to meekness — often not a popular position to take, if one looks at the modern world. But Jesus’ words are almost always countercultural and with his words we look at how we experience meekness as Christians. It is both a call to trust and rely on God, and to serve others. Finally we see how this beatitude is one that even great saints have struggled with — but they made it heaven! So, we close with a prayer from the heart of St. Thérèse of Lisieux (listed below). Links for this episode: Blessed Are You, by Melanie Rigney Prayer of St. Thérèse of Lisieux Dear Lord, Thou knowest my weakness. Each morning I resolve to be humble, and in the evening I recognize that I have often been guilty of pride. The sight of these faults tempts me to discouragement; yet I know that discouragement is itself but a form of pride. I wish, therefore, O my God, to build all my trust upon Thee. As Thou can do all things, deign to implant in my soul this virtue which I desire, and to obtain it from Thy Infinite Mercy, I will often say to Thee: “Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart, make my heart like unto Thine.” Other podcasts of related interest: AW Espresso Shot #36: The Beatitudes — an overview AW Espresso Shot #37: The Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit AW Espresso Shot #38: The Beatitudes: Blessed are those who mourn AW 199: Beatitude = Being Like Jesus with Melanie Rigney Reminders: Send your comments to Pat Gohn at amongwomenpodcast@me.com, or to the Among Women podcast facebook page. Welcome to Episode 35 of Among Women “Espresso Shot” – a short strong coffee break of faith sharing and teaching from Pat Gohn. Today’s topic: Praying, Sacrificing, and Reparation In this espresso shot, I focus on the prayers of the Angel at Fatima to the visionaries … which have great power to help heal the church and the world, and, us. We see and experience trouble in the world, trouble in the Church … this is a deep call for Catholics to do the heaving lifting in terms of prayer, sacrifice, and reparation for the love of Jesus, for the conversions of those who are far from him, and to offer reparation for the sins and offenses against the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. (Here’s an informative video about reparation and Eucharistic devotion, including a conversation with the recently deceased, Fr. Andrew Apostoli, an expert on this subject. His book on Fatima is highly recommended by me.) Information for the 2 prayers from the Angel of Fatima offered in this episode: Angel Prayer / Pardon Prayer (From the first apparition of the Angel at Fatima, Spring, 1916) My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love you! I ask pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You! Another common translation of this prayer in English is this: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love you! I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You! Pray either one! 2. Here is the Angel’s prayer from his third visit to the children of Fatima in the Fall of 1916: Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore YOU profoundly, and I offer You the precious he most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And through the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners. Another common translation of this prayer in English is this: O Most holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore you profoundly. I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He is offended. By the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners. Pray either one! July 10, 2019 In this episode: “Blessed are They”: St. Teresa of Avila; St. Catherine of Siena “Among Women” Guest: Mary Lenaburg This episode offers a powerful conversation with Mary Lenaburg, author of Be Brave in the Scared that details her vocation as a wife and mother, with a particular emphasis on the faith and life lessons that accompanied her 22 years as Courtney’s mother. Mary’s daughter lived most of her life with profound disabilities, but her short life made a beautifully profound impact in the lives of those who knew her. St. Francis de Sales’ famous work Introduction to the Devout Life has been part of my spiritual reading for a long time! Welcome to Episode 33 of Among Women “Espresso Shot” – a short strong coffee break of faith sharing and teaching from Pat Gohn. Today’s topic: Devotions for Days of the Week After 12 installments on the monthly devotions that the Church calls us to, I felt remiss in not discussing that the Church also recommends different devotions for the days of the week. These are recommended by me — not to give you more “to do.” They are recommended to help us respond to Christ in ways that might be in sync with our daily calendars. So, if its something you’ve never done before, start small and see how it goes. No pressure from me or the Church in this regard … I’m just offering suggestions for what may prove helpful. But none of this is mandatory. Your prayer life is between you and God. For someone like me, who has a scheduled life to contend with, I find these kinds of prayer prompts helpful. A personal note from Pat: This podcast returns after an unexpected break of several weeks. Without going into too many details, my husband and I have had to invest many more hours than usual into some family needs where our parents health needs are concerned, and we’ve been backlogged both at work and home. I also experienced some illness, and a confounding technical breakdown in my home studio. (This podcast has one sole proprietor — yours truly!) Talk about setbacks of time, money, and wellbeing. Anyway, the folks are doing a little better, I’m feeling healthy, and the studio needs are patched, but need more repair… So, say a prayer for all of us, won’t you? I will appreciate it! Today’s topic: Praying for the Souls in Purgatory This is the 11th installment in a 12-part series on the monthly church devotions. In November we are called to pray for the holy souls — the faithful departed — as they move toward purification and the perfection of Heaven. While the Church does has All Souls day as a memorial, traditionally on Nov. 2 every year, the truth is that the entire month is dedicated to praying for souls. In this podcast I’ll offer a brief teaching on the hopeful truth of purgatory, and the benefits of praying for souls. And of course we’ll pray together at the end — for the many souls that might benefit from our prayers! Links for this episode: Catechism of the Catholic Church on purgatory. See paragraphs 1030-1032. Welcome to Episode 29 of Among Women “Espresso Shot” – a short strong coffee break of faith sharing and teaching from Pat Gohn. Today’s topic: Seven Sorrows of Mary This is the 9th installment in a 12-part series on the monthly church devotions. In September we honor the Seven Sorrows of Mary. This is a great time to engage Mary our Mother — as we lift our sorrows to her. She knows us and she understands. We can take comfort in Mary’s strength that is found at the foot of the Cross. With the ever-expanding church sex-abuse scandals we are currently witnessing in the news, the call to devotion to Mary under her patronage of Our Lady of Sorrows, and to meditation upon the Seven Sorrows of Mary is very poignant, indeed. July 29, 2018 This episode: “Blessed are They”: St. Olympia “Among Women” Guest: Mary Beth Weisenburger In this episode of Among Women we look at something very close to my heart — prayer journaling! It’s a great topic and I’m pleased to welcome Mary Beth Weisenburger, author of Praying with a Pen: The Girlfriend’s Guide to Stress-Free Prayer Journaling. Our conversation is geared for all those newbies who want to try this method of prayer — what Mary Beth dubs “chocolate for your soul”. Together we explore how to get started (hint: listen for the 4 P’s), as well as what it means to experience holy whispers and “holy moly” moments. I also look back in early fourth-century church history to recap some of the extraordinary life of St. Olympia — a woman of great fortitude and generosity.
