Charlie talks up his mom to Gordon, Gordon tells Charlie that he's stepping down as coach and the team gets into a fight at school. Special Guest: Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute
Blake brings on Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute to discuss one of the most popular songs in the movie, Take Me or Leave Me. They discuss the difference between the set up in the Broadway show, on Valentine's Day, and the move at the most over the top engagement party either of them has ever seen. All this and much much more.
It's time to get sad. Blake and Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute talk about Without You and the depressing montage of events that happens during the song, including death, drugs and lying. Then after talking about Contact, they break the tension talking about other fun musicals.
We plead the fifth (night of Chanukah) as Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute and George Hendricks from Mogwai Minute and Elementary, My Dear are along to dissect New Girl season 1 episode 9, "The 23rd."
Liz and George are in the brownstone to discuss class warfare and physical warfare at the hands of a 10-yr old. Baskin-Robbins always finds out. Communism was just a red herring. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mean-girls-minute/id1434231625 http://waitaduneminute.com/ HA:TMP Battle Plan vs HA2 Operation Ho-Ho-Ho:
“Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry plays as Curt cruises with the Pharaohs, Carol gets hit by a water balloon, and she and Milner bond over some extreme revenge. George Hendricks from The Mogwai Minute and Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute rejoin Tierney to talk about flatulence humor, Carol's moxie, Chekhov's shaving cream, ineffective spotlights, and (sigh) poop. While John and Carol play “ring around the Chevy” and slash some tires, we dive into the history of Chuck Berry, so heads up, it gets a little adult.Come hang out at Mel's Listeners' Drive In on Facebook and @vcrprivileges on Twitter and InstagramArtwork by Alex RobinsonMusic by Chris Frain
Today, we are covering the music and sound of minutes 26-30 of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi! We get a final look of Luke, Leia sits by the window while exiting hyperspace, Leia slaps and demotes Poe, Admiral Ackbar calls a proximity alert, Snoke's ship tracks the Raddus, Poe gets permission to blow stuff up, Kylo Ren looks angry but conflicted, and the hangar blows up. Guest: Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute. Theme-spotting: Force theme, Kylo Ren theme, Leia theme, Resistance March, Tension. Soundtrack: "4. The Supremacy" Discussion topics: "Force Theme vs Binary Sunset vs Obi Wan" Liz's method of writing music to herself is "BUM bum bum bum bum" Suspension chords and the effect they can have on a scene. Water bottle rattle symbolism. Xanthe feels some "Pavane for a Dead Princess" (Maurice Ravel) vibes. What hyperspace sounds like and how we would recreate hyperspace at home. Rundown of sound design highlights. Futuristic beeps and blips. So underrated yet so precise. How 90's pop divas unknowingly trained our ears to recognize emphatic key changes. The sputtering and corkscrewing sounds of Kylo's ship. An interesting happens in Kylo's theme... Our lay breakdown of the explosion sound moment. How sound design sparks curiosity. Incongruity and unexpected sound design choices subconsciously challenge our assumptions about the physical space of a given world. (ex. The sound BB-8 makes when bouncing around). Two different interpretations of what Leia's Theme could mean. Consistency note: While leitmotif names are completely up to interpretation, I'm using the names that Frank Lehman uses in his Complete Catalogue of the Musical Themes of Star Wars. I find this resource to be the most careful, objective, well-organized, and up-to-date guide of its kind. Liz Whitaker is on Twitter @MeanGirlsMinute. Also Instagram @meangirlsminute. The Ghost crew teams with Hondo and Azmorigan for a weapons score. Mike, Peter, and guest Liz get really weird and loopy in this one as we chat about Azmorgan and Hondo, a toilet planet, and Peter adds super obscure drops that only make him and his wife laugh. This one’s for you, babe. Megan and Tierney are joined by Liz Whitaker of Mean Girls Minute to talk about… surgery and having blood drawn. Very different type of movie. The heroes of this minute are the closed captioner and Radar the Vampire. Meanwhile, Trapper operates on a prisoner of war and tries out his best dad jokes. We discuss the importance of admitting when you don’t know what you’re doing and also the importance of admitting when you did something wrong. There are several stories of woe about donating blood; just a heads up in case you aren’t into phlebotomy.
Though some in the Vuvalini are cautious about Furiosa’s traveling companions, the two groups quickly merge as introductions are made. This pleases Furiosa and she expresses her eagerness to reach The Green Place so The Wives can see it. Her happiness is quickly dashed as the Vuvalini tell Furiosa that The Green Place is no more. Special Guests: Liz Whitaker & Alyson Grimm from Mean Girls Minute
The Vuvalini gather around Furiosa as The Valkyrie arrives after descending from the tower. The two embrace as they recognize each other after being separated for many years. The other Vuvalini begin to question Furiosa, wanting to learn more about her time away from them. Seeing that there is no danger, The Wives leave the War Rig. Special Guests: Liz Whitaker & Alyson Grimm from Mean Girls Minute
Furiosa holds out her hands to show she is unarmed and announces to any unseen eyes that she is one of the Vuvalini, of Clan Swaddle Dog. At this proclamation, the woman on the tower signals the others and women on motorcycles appear from every direction. Max, Nux and the wives sit in the War Rig as the motorcycles surround Furiosa. The song, "I'm Tired," continues in this minute. Lili von Shtupp is at a point in her performance where she wants to chat with the audience. She begins with a young man who has propped his feet up on the stage. She asks his name and he replies, "Tex, ma'am." She then plays with him saying, "Well, Tex ma'am, are you in show business?" He says he is not. Then she kicks his boots as she tells him to get his friggin' feet off the stage. She then compliments another for having a 10 gallon hat, or is he just enjoying the show. She then does a strange slow octave build with her voice, prompting a drunk to get up on stage. We continue today with Lili singing the song that closed Poland. While we examine the lyrics, we wonder if the song is one someone else has written or is it autobiographical. We wonder why she is tired of being admired? We also have to figure out what she says to the audience after the lyric, "...and always too soon." There is some discussion about where the chair goes that is kicked into the audience. Also, who threw their hat and where did it land? By the end of the minute, we are only a third of the way through the song, but the audience is really enjoying it. We continue today with sheriff Bart slowly trotting toward the center of town. The citizens are agape as he gets off his horse and walks to the platform. He pulls the welcome sign back down and ascends the stairs. As he reaches the podium, he utters the famous line, "'Scuse me while I whip this out!" The townsfolk scream before realizing he's just getting out the order signed by the governor. As he reads his appointment, he becomes well aware that most of the men in town are cocking their guns and taking aim. As Bart finishes reading the order, Revered Johnson holds up the bible and demands they all pay heed to the Good Book and what it says. Someone shoots out the center of the Bible and all Reverend Johnson can do is turn to Bart. With a cocked eyebrow he says, "Son, you're on your own." Fr. While the band is playing, Gabby Johnson looks back through his telescope. This time, the image of Bart is clearer and he can see he is a black sheriff. Gabby tries to inform the citizens of Rock Ridge that the sheriff is a... Unfortunately, the church bell happens to GONG just as he says the word. The welcoming committee wonders what he is saying. One suggests that the sheriff is near. Gabby, infuriated over being misheard, utters some authentic frontier gibberish and tries to tell them a second time. Again, the bell gongs just in time to prevent us from hearing the racial slur. As Sheriff Bart rounds the corner, the band suddenly stops playing and the citizens are aghast. Howard Johnson isn't watching and begins to read his speech, looking up only in time to utter a racial epithet. Just as Bart comes to a stop, the welcome sheriff sign suddenly rolls itself up as the citizens continue to stare. Fr.
