In 1 Peter 2:9, we're told we are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. What is this "royal priesthood" Peter refers to? How is it different from the ordained priesthood? And what does it mean for us as Catholics?Dr. Matthew Levering, theology chair at Mundelein Seminary, explains.

Steven graduated from Sacred Heart Major Seminary and with that, ended 23 consecutive years of schooling!Steven took this time to reflect back on his academic priestly formation which began in 2018 at Mundelein Seminary. The transition from college where he studied Mathematics to the seminary and Philosophy proved more challenging than expected.    Figuring that the logic and mathematical thinking would easily segue into philosophy, Steven discovered things more challenging.Steven worked hard and things started to click.   He found that understanding Philosophy helps one prepare for studying Theology.    How you look at things sets foundation for how you look at God.   Philosophy serves as a handmaid to Theology.Transitioning to Theology was not only a transition in studies but a transition between seminaries as Steven moved from Mundelein to Sacred Heart Major. While Philosophy is more "ivory tower" in nature, Theology is based on revelation, what we have received from the Lord.   Mining and more deeply coming to know what we have received from the Lord, it is Faith seeking understanding.Reflecting on his growth from 2018 Steven feels he has grown in how he looks a the world.   With a more clear understanding of the source of human thought it can only help to unpack the Good News.Leaving nothing but fond memories of his seminary years, Steven now looks forward towards ordination.

In this episode, Paul and Bill situate themselves geographically, updating each other on their latest activities and changes in locale. Paul is on a medical mission to Billings, Montana, at the moment. Bill has moved from South Bend, where he was an adjunct professor at Holy Cross College, to Troy, NY, the hometown of his wife. Uranium mining is on Paul's mind during his brief departure from Wyoming Catholic College in the small town of Lander. As a PhD geologist, Paul will make a presentation on the modern-day considerations of uranium mining and nuclear power at the 2022 conference of the Society of Catholic Scientists. The conference will be held on the first weekend of June at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago. (Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ, a consecrated brother in the Jesuits and a distinguished astronomer, will be honored by the SCS this year with its St. Albert the Great Award.) The inconveniences of uranium, says Paul, who has studied it since his graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, stem from its undeniable value for power generation—and some characteristics he described as compellingly “weird.” He takes us on a professor's tour of the periodic table and the uranium mining regions near his campus. Kazakhstan and Russia are key sources of uranium. In-situ leaching is a growing source for uranium elsewhere in the world, including in the US. Every state regulates uranium and any mining activities. For example, Texas has a Commission on Environmental Quality. There is a complex history of regulation of uranium and nuclear energy at both the state and federal levels. Paul referred to Bill's membership in the international Secular Franciscan Order. Paul offers a survey of opinions and alternatives in energy policy for the Earth. For a very recent and well-informed video treatment of sustainable energy choices for the future, see “Can We Cool the Planet?” at PBS's NOVA series website. India is probing possibilities for thorium as a source of nuclear energy. China is staking much of its energy future on nuclear power. In the US and elsewhere, politicians must get more serious about addressing crucial, conflict-ridden challenges, such as the storage and reprocessing of uranium. A note: Paul recommends the episodes on Nietzsche and Epicurean philosophy from the “Food 4 Thought” podcast, presented by Jonathan Kutz, which covers philosophy and science from Christian perspective. It's a natural for fans of “That's So Second Millennium.” You can access “Food 4 Thought” on several platforms, including Anchor and Audible. What does it mean to be the people of God? Is it possible for Jewish and Christian people to engage in fruitful dialogue about their faiths, with integrity and mutual respect? Despite, or perhaps because of, the bitterly tragic history between them, especially of the ill-treatment of Jewish people under the false guise of Christianity, ongoing efforts toward charitable understanding and friendship are to be especially treasured. Engaging the Doctrine of Israel: A Christian Israelology in Dialogue with Ongoing Judaism (Cascade Books, 2021) is the dogmatic sequel to Levering's Engaging the Doctrine of Marriage, in which he argued that God's purpose in creating the cosmos is the eschatological marriage of God and his people. God sets this marriage into motion through his covenantal election of a particular people, the people of Israel. Central to this people's relationship with the Creator God are their Scriptures, exodus, Torah, Temple, land, and Davidic kingship. As a Christian Israelology, this book devotes a chapter to each of these topics, investigating their theological significance both in light of ongoing Judaism and in light of Christian Scripture (Old and New Testaments) and Christian theology.  Tune is as we speak with Matthew Levering about his recent book, Engaging the Doctrine of Israel. Matthew Levering is the James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology at Mundelein Seminary, in Mundelein, Illinois. He is the author of over thirty books, including four previous volumes in his Engaging the Doctrine dogmatic series. He is the co-editor of two quarterly journals, Nova et Vetera and International Journal of Systematic Theology. Michael Morales is Professor of Biblical Studies at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the author of The Tabernacle Pre-Figured: Cosmic Mountain Ideology in Genesis and Exodus(Peeters, 2012), Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord?: A Biblical Theology of Leviticus (IVP Academic, 2015), and Exodus Old and New: A Biblical Theology of Redemption (IVP Academic, 2020). In a recent article for Public Discourse, Father John Kartje stressed the necessity for seminarians to grow in "affective maturity" and explained how that quality is instilled through the training and experiences future parish priests receive at Mundelein Seminary. He explains, "The term 'affective maturity' is used to describe the seminarian's ability to properly recognize and integrate his emotions into his assessment of, and reaction to, a given situation or encounter." This requires much self-knowledge and honesty. Read the full article here. With more than 25 percent of Americans suffering from a mental health disorder, parish priests are faced with the task of ministering to parishioners who could be struggling with a wide range of issues. Priests themselves are also not immune to mental health problems, which is why Mundelein Seminary has a variety of programs and qualified staff in place to help seminarians learn about mental health issues and confront their own struggles. In this episode of our Formation podcast, Father Jacob Rouse '18 of the Archdiocese of Dubuque talks about his road to the priesthood and details his personal experience with mental health issues. He discusses the programs and processes in place at Mundelein Seminary that helped him take care of his own mental health throughout his formation. He also talks about how transparency with his mental health struggles has enriched his priesthood and allowed him to connect with parishioners and others who face similar difficulties. Click here to watch his longer video on his experiences with mental health issues. The big questions in life - who am I? what am I? why am I here? Every human throughout history has grappled with these questions. Get the answers right and you can live a virtuous, flourishing life. Yet today, too many students, and adults for that matter, are fumbling through life trying to find meaning and purpose. Knowing the right questions is a critical first step to finding lasting and sustaining life answers. Classical Christian schools are uniquely positioned to guide students along an educational journey to answer these life questions. Our guest, Dr. Joshua Farris, has written a compelling new book exploring these essential questions and offering a comprehensive vision of how our beliefs inform our understanding of what it means to be human. He points to several specific techniques used in upper school classical Christian classrooms that equip students to answer these questions confidently, helping us all form a comprehensive vision of the human person as an embodied soul.BIOGRAPHY Prior to being named Executive Director of Alpine Christian School in Alpine, TX, Dr. Farris was the Chester and Margaret Paluch Professor at Mundelein Seminary, University of Saint Mary of the Lake; a part-time Lecturer at Auburn University Montgomery; and an Assistant Professor of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. He was at Houston Baptist University from 2014-2019. There, he served in the Theology department, Great Texts department, the Honors College, the Philosophy department, and the Academy, where he developed over 14 courses as part of the Great Texts program. A prolific writer, Dr. Farris' most recent work is An Introduction to Theological Anthropology. He is also the author of The Soul of Theological Anthropology and the coeditor of several volumes, including Being Saved: Explorations in Human Salvation, New England Dogmatics: A Systematic Collection of Questions and Answers in Divinity by Maltby Gelston (1766-1865), Christian Physicalism?, and The Routledge Companion to Theological Anthropology.Buy An Introduction to Theological Anthropology, here.
