Minute One Hundred Forty Three: From The Final Climactic Beats in Alan Silvestri's Amazing Theme to The Studio Logos... With a Little Stop at Shawarma Palace in BetweenMike Gravagno from The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-third and final minute of The Avengers...The credits finally come to an end, but not before we get to talk about the MPAA film numbers. We also ponder when Dolby Atmos started up, and sure enough it was 2012. Not in time for this film unfortunately. What we're really here for, though, is shawarma. Shawarma Palace. This glorious post-credit sequence shifted the tone of post-credit sequences and allowed later filmmakers to be goofy with them from time to time. We're fans. We talk about each of the characters and even reveal why Chris Evans is being so still throughout. Minute One Hundred Forty Two: From The Rest of the Visual Effects Thank You List to The Start of the Logos. The TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network's own Justin Jaeger joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-forty-second minute of The Avengers...We continue our journey through the credits. We get all 214 people who worked on the stereoscopic conversion for this film, which leads to a fun conversation about going to 3D movies. We talk a bit about the main title and the iconic Avengers logo. There's also 20 people credited as helping with the celebration montage, which is cool. We talk about Alan Silvestri, about the four songs in the film, including one we completely missed when Tony and Pepper are first in Stark Tower. We talk a bit about the non-endorsement by NASA at the end, and we each pick one person to talk about. JJ picks Depth Lead Katherine Rodtsbrooks (now Katherine Renee Jones) who was involved in the 3D conversion. Pete picks Craig Kyle, a comic book artist and executive producer given special thanks. Andy picks Steve Boeddecker, a sound designer at Skywalker Sound. Lots of great conversation! We look at how many people are credited with each team here, and then we jump into our names that we each picked. Steve picked the brothers Greg and Colin Strause, who run [hy*drau”lx], which spurs on a chat about the world of VFX right now, particularly with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on. From there, Andy talks about Joel Gerlach who worked as a VFX artist at Luma Pictures on this film, but has since gone on to create his own VFX company. Pete closes things out with a chat about Michael Corcoran, but we're still not sure where he's actually credited in this film. Regardless, he worked on creature effects, so we assume that means the Chitauri? Or maybe he was responsible for the exploding leviathan eyeball! And where would we be if we didn't bring up Soundgarden one last time? We spend a bit of time breaking down The Other's line, and then we get into the appearance of Thanos, aka Man No. 1. That means we get to break down Damion Poitier a bit as well as he portrayed him here. We chat through the various images we see and again try to figure out if there's any rhyme or reason as to who gets which image, other than the six principals. It doesn't make much sense. Would it have made more sense to go a different route so they would've had more options for characters like Hulk? From there, we talk through each of the people listed and discuss some of their awards wins and nominations, along with some of our favorites of the films they've done. Minute One Hundred Thirty Four: From A Big A to Iron Man's PalmAndrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from the Protagonist Podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-fourth minute of The Avengers...We finish pulling out of the broken windows at Stark Tower, finding just the A left in the STARK signage out here. We also get a small WHOOSH right when we pass the A, as if to tell us that it's something we need to notice. We talk about ideas like this, who decides them, and how they end up in here. We finish our chat about Tony and Pepper and whatever it is they're doing with their hologram of the building blueprint. Did you notice the quinjet in it? It's pretty cool. As promised, today is our conversation looking at the alternate ending with Maria Hill closing out her questioning by the World Security Council. It's a bit awkward and way too long. While it gives us the rest of the bit of Hill that we've been enjoying develop since those opening moments and would've been great to give that extra bit of character development to Cobie Smulders, it really does feel unnecessary in the end. But maybe that's because it's so long and has such clunky dialogue. And we're done! It's time for credits. Andrew says his kids call this section the ‘special credits,' so we'll adopt that from them. We briefly discuss some of the team here that's new to the MCU, but largely we talk about the art that comes with these special credits. Why is Cap so dominant throughout, to the point where we're getting the buckle on the back of his shield and his torn and damaged shoulder of his costume featured? Black Widow's only featured once? Some of the items are cool to look at, but it's a strange set of choices they used as the featured elements from our heroes. Not to mention Iron Man takes forever to show up and Hulk doesn't even appear by the time this minute ends. What gives? It's all interesting and worth thinking about. Minute One Hundred Thirty Three: From Hill's Questions for Fury to Repair Work on Tony's Penthouse.Andrew Darowski from Disney Animation Minute Essentials and Joe Darowski from the Protagonist Podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirty-third minute of The Avengers...Fury finishes his power walk, but what's with all the scuff marks in the hallway there? Were they moving a piano through here? Or does this have to do with his bazooka love? It's a bit of an awkward cut to Fury's conversation with Maria Hill from here. Perhaps this is because there's an alternate ending involving the closure with Maria Hill and her questioning by the World Security Council. We'll save that for tomorrow's conversation, but we do discuss the rough edit. We also talk about Fury's power positions here on the bridge, including his standing on the circular window at the front. We question his thinking because of the structural damage to this ship, but maybe it just makes Fury even more badass? We also get to discuss the SHIELD logo built into the floor and the attempt for the camera to show it to us, even if it is hard to see. From there, we head to Stark Tower where we find Tony and Pepper looking at Stark-techified blueprints of the new Avengers Tower as well as quinjets. It's fun to see them playing with all of this, but the editing's all over the place. And where are all the people that should be working on the mess in here? Why do they have those Stark-techified ladders in here? And why do they need ladders anyway? Where did this handy Tesseract travel tube come from? Did Erik whip that up in his spare time? It's certainly convenient, and clearly knows how to get Thor and Loki back to Asgard. What's with the muzzle Loki's wearing? We ponder the need for something like this as he's not a villain who says spells or attacks with his mouth. We assume it's just because it makes him look caught that much more.We watch our heroes go their separate ways (though completely ignoring Erik – so much so we don't even discuss his departure, or lack thereof, in the episode). We've got news feeds plus what looks like various YouTube types of videos people have posted, all relating to the celebration of – or skepticism with – the Avengers and their role in the Battle of New York. We talk the IMDb credits for our various speaking actors, and lo and behold one of them is none other than Stan Lee! That's right – this minute features his cameo. It's not one of our favorites, but it's still fun. From there, we shift to Nick Fury and his tense discussion he's having with the members of the World Security Council. We talk more about this shady organization and wonder why it will largely be dropped from future films. We also get to talk about our heroes rendezvousing at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, wondering why they met here to ship Loki off instead of just staying in Stark Tower where they already were. And do Natasha and Erik find a ladder or something to climb down? Is that how she got the scepter in the first place? We find Loki barely moving, but alive. He clearly looks defeated, perhaps so much so that he doesn't hear the six heroes sneak up on him because when he turns around, they're practically in his face. We love the fantastic pose here showing our heroes assembling and in the scope of things, it doesn't matter much that Loki doesn't hear them coming because it looks so damn cool.We jump to the helicarrier where we're looking at several monitors, watching the various news feeds that Fury's looking at. The image of the face plate laying in the rubble was something we saw in the alternate opening for the film. We talk a bit about what that would've meant to have seen it then. Hulk roars and Tony snaps awake then has a line about hoping no one kissed him. This shifts us into some talk about fan fic and other ways this scene may be interpreted, regardless of any intentions from the writers or director. That wistful look on Steve's face... There's plenty to discuss about camera technique in a post-climax scene, including the possible trope of the slow pull-back on our team. We also talk about the wrap-up of the battle and wonder why this ended up being put together without Clint or Natasha (despite the obvious reasons that they're still at the tops of high-rises). That's the big question on everyone's minds below. Unfortunately, with a nuclear explosion heading their way from the other side of the hole, Steve has to make the tough call to close the hole, potentially leaving Tony behind. It's the tough call a military leader has to know when to make, and he makes it, knowing it's potentially for the good of Earth. After all, if he doesn't shut it, that nuclear blast will push through the hole.It does lead to questions about how much radiation would actually make it through the hole, not to mention why it takes so long to get to the hole. We also wonder about the edge of the hole. Is it tangible? Or is it more like a laser that'd cut you in half if you hit it? And why, on Earth's side, isn't it depicted as something people actually have to fly through in order to get from the hole? But the heroes do shut the hole and Tony makes it through. He's unconscious, and luckily, Hulk decides he's going to save Tony and he does so. Then he casually tosses him to the side. It's touching and funny. Minute One Hundred Twenty Seven: From Tony's Final Push to Tony Falling in SpaceIn the one-hundred-twenty-seventh minute of The Avengers...Tony somehow manages to not hit Stark Tower, which now looks like AI Tower. It's a bit ridiculous, but it's a movie so it's fine. Hulk watches in a dramatic shot, as does Nat. Where's Clint? Still stuck in that apartment? Cap and Thor watch from the streets below. Tony flies the nuke through the one-sided space hole and everyone cheers, but the battle's not over yet. Shouldn't Fury be, you know, directing or something?Meanwhile, we join Tony on the other side of the one-sided hole, but couldn't he have just tossed the nuke through and not gone through himself? If his intention was to hit the Chitauri mothership – which he does – wouldn't it have been better to see him aiming it once through? As it stands, it just looks like he keeps flying straight, until his suit powers down.Wouldn't his suit have been bette designed by this point after learning about near space flight in the first Iron Man movie? And even if it powered down, shouldn't he just keep moving along with the missile because of the vacuum of space? At least the shoulder units pop off to help propel him backward but was that enough?Regardless, Tony has a spiritual moment here as he seems to be dying. It's a powerful moment and we're fans of the moment, even if some of the logistics don't make sense. Minute One Hundred Twenty Six: From Tony's Missile Chase to Tony's Missile Heave HoLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-sixth minute of The Avengers...The chase is on! Tony spots the nuke and does a great U-turn under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge between Staten Island and Long Island. What does this say about where the F-35 was though? Wasn't the helicarrier off the east coast of Long Island? And why don't we ever get to see the Statue of Liberty in this film? Even in the background of one of these shots? Ah well.Speaking of Tony's U-turn, the water explosion when he blasts his thrusters at it... quite a kick! So again, what happened to those people under him when he first got his Mark VII on? Ouch.Tony's plan is to catch the nuke and push it up through the space hole. But shouldn't the team on the helicarrier still be doing things? Like scrambling jets? Calling New York's leaders to evacuate the city? You know, things like that? While it might make sense, we do agree that there's a story element of having everyone watch that gives us a sense that everything's been done and all they – just like us – can do is watch. It's fine. And that leads to Tony's final push. We've got a two minute and thirty second clock that starts ticking right here. Will it play out in real time as it does in movie time? We'll find out two-and-a-half minutes from now! We come into the fight in slow motion on Thor and Cap as they each retrieve their tools, then ramp up as they battle the Chitauri. It's an odd moment but does work okay. And they play it well sharing their pain and their ribs. Literally.Erik and Natasha work on destroying the Tesseract energy with the sceptre but how did she get it from Tony's patio? Is there a ladder we don't see? We still have issues with Erik's secret back door to destroy the Tesseract, but it is what it is. A bazooka. Uh, is this Fury's weapon of choice? Is there bazooka storage in the elevator? We decide that Fury's such a fan of bazookas and blowing things up with them on the helicarrier that there's likely bazooka storage all over the place. But Fury does take out one of his own aircraft. Presumably, he wouldn't have cared if it blew up entirely or fell off the side of the helicarrier, killing the pilot, because the nuke wasn't launched. So then why does he hesitate when he pulls his sidearm to take aim at the second F-35? Shouldn't he just unload his clip? It's a bit of a trope that doesn't play well here for his character. The fact that the World Security Council did decide to launch two F-35s to take on NYC does pique our curiosity. Why is this the route they choose? We do get to sort out a bit as to who's got earbuds for communication here. We also talk a bit about Tony's HUD and how it's being portrayed through the film and the shift we'll start noticing here as we move forward toward the end. We get to explore that in this minute in great detail. First off, how does he even get them out of his quiver? It doesn't look like arrowheads could make it out of its top. We try to figure out the system he has for selecting arrowheads. Is it a combination system with the buttons on his bow? Or more like an up-down-select set of buttons? And how many extra arrowheads does he keep in his quiver? Another question that comes up relates to pulling arrows out of victims to reuse the shaft. Is there a button on the trigger than leaves the head behind, which is why there's no arrowhead on the one he struck down this Chitauri with? And does he have some sort of sanitation system to clean the viscera off the shaft before reusing it? So many questions...That takes us to his exciting escape from the Chitauri chariots heading his way to blow up the top of the building. It's his handy grappling hook arrowhead, and that creates all its own questions. How does that little head hold so much weight? What's with the cable? And how does it attach to his bow? Regardless, it does save Clint's life, even if he's in a lot of pain afterward. Of course, Kate Bishop's watching from the across the street, lest we forget.Meanwhile, Hulk's taking out Chitauri on a building top and then is surrounded by nearly two dozen more that blast him. Why doesn't he jump out? We discuss in detail, before heading to the helicarrier where we see a jet called into action from Jenny Agutter's member of the WSC and Maria Hill taking note. Minute One Hundred Twenty Two: From Erik's Secret Safety to Quickdraw Archery on the RooftopLester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-second minute of The Avengers...There's a space where the film might have made more sense if Erik was blinded by his passion for science and willingly did all this work to make this machine, only to realize at this point that he was wrong. That's not the story we get, and so the fact that Erik somehow knew to build a safety into his machine feels very heavy-handed to us. But the story needs to be moving along quickly as we're entering the climactic finale and just need to make things quickly understood. That takes us to Thor using his incredible leg muscles to stabilize himself on this chariot as he takes out several Chitauri before completely getting knocked off by a leviathan crashing through what turns out to be the Baxter Building, at least based on the real world address. Why was this poor friendly sea cow of the skies flying through a building? Well, turns out Iron Man was shooting it with lasers and chasing it. No wonder it's running and likely scared!Tony decides to do his little Jonah move which speaks to the fact that he really didn't know or understand the actual story. Minute One Hundred Twenty One: From Nat's Tuck-and-Roll Landing to Erik's Big Reveal... AlmostLachlan Thiele from the Quiet on Set Podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-first minute of The Avengers...Nat nails her landing on the tippity-top of Stark Tower, and luckily they have walls so she doesn't roll right off. What's perfect about her landing is the fantastic match cut we get from her flipping her hair (certainly required in every film by this point) to Loki doing the exact same thing. Those gorgeous locks. The filmmakers clearly knew what they were doing with this moment. But what is Loki looking at? It's not Nat because she's behind and above him. It's not Clint because he's 400 feet below him. It's not Hulk because he hasn't arrived yet. We stew on it and think perhaps he didn't realize she leapt from her chariot so might be scanning the skies for her? That does take us to the arrival of Hulk, which gives us plenty to discuss. The humor. The “puny god” line. Loki's speechifying. The film style where if it's not in frame, it doesn't exist. Asgardian pain tolerance. The awkward shifting of antagonist with the end of our villain in a comedy beat. It's a great moment but certainly brings up many angles of discussion. We end our conversation back on the roof with Nat as she talks to Erik about his machine. It's a shame it's a bit of an exposition dump, but we are at that point in the film where they're trying to hurry us through to the end. Still, Erik does give us a line here which certainly feels like it's setting him up as a tremendous villain in future films. It's a shame he was never used in that capacity. Minute One Hundred Twenty: From Fury Recognizing the Council's Decision to Black Widow's Leap of FaithFather David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minutes community, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twentieth minute of The Avengers...Ah, the World Security Council. We have fun delving into the complexities of a shadow organization like this, and how it relates to SHIELD. And Fury's positional relationship to them – are they all equal in their roles or is Fury subordinate? And if he's subordinate, should we care more that he's not listening to them? The answer is no because 1) Fury's on the side of our heroes and we have a relationship with them, and 2) it's Samuel L. Jackson. But why the decision to use a nuke instead of something a bit smaller? It hasn't even been an hour since the attack started. Wouldn't they try some other methods first? This leads us to talk about the type of film we're watching – it's a superhero film. We need superhero-sized threats. Just as we've discussed previously how it wouldn't be the same if the might of the US military was here fighting along side the Avengers, it wouldn't be the same if they were fighting simple missiles. It needed to be a nuke.Still, we're not thrilled with more of those implications brought on by the choice. From there, we find Black Widow being pursued by Loki and Clint offering to help. Aside from some elevation complaints, it's a wonderful sequence and leads to a great gag as Loki catches Hawkeye's arrow before it blows up in his face.We end our conversation talking about Nat's crazy leap, the dodgy effects, and Father David's final Christ and the Cape segment this season. Minute One Hundred Nineteen: From Cap Lost in a Looking Glass to Cap Lost in His ThoughtsFather David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minutes community, joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-nineteenth minute of The Avengers...We're back with Cap in that little side mirror. What were they trying to say here? Or was it just something to do because it looks cool and perhaps feels a bit more like an image you'd find on the pages of a comic book? We land on the latter. Regarding Hawkeye's message to Cap, however, we have no idea how he knows there's an issue in the bank. He's 400 feet in the air, after all, on the top of a building. That takes us to our deleted scene where we get more backstory with Beth the waitress as she flees the Pershing Street Cafe, makes it through the streets, sees Officer Saunders get killed by a Chitauri blast, then gets taken herself. She ends up in the 42nd Street Bank as a hostage with dozens of other civilians, where we find her in the theatrical cut. There's some odd and uncomfortable Holocaust imagery and themes here that come across more in the deleted scenes, but even without that, it raises too many questions for us. Why are the Chitauri rounding people up and killing them in this way? Why not just gun them down in the street? And why does their bomb only seem to work on two planes? All that said, we have a great fight between Captain America and the Chitauri, not to mention a fantastically cool escape that Cap does, as the Chitauri are disintegrated by their own bomb. That leads us back outside where Cap's dazed and looks at all the damage, and Beth the waitress just might actually recognize him. His mask did get ripped off, after all. Anyway, it's a confusing scene but does have some fun action. Plus, we get another Christ and the Cape from Father David! Minute One Hundred Eighteen: From A Game of Follow-the-Arrow to Our Second Odd Mirror Shot of the FilmIn the one-hundred-eighteenth minute of The Avengers...It's the second half of our fantastic single shot traveling from hero to hero, and we're here for it. In this minute, we follow Hawkeye's arrow to the Chitauri it hits to the leviathan it crashes into to Hulk and Thor on the back of the beast. It's quite a ride! Unfortunately, this does lead to more devastating treatment of our dear sea cows of the skies – the leviathan. Hulk and Thor team up to take this poor beast down, and sadly, it crashes into Grand Central Terminal where it not only dies but its eyeball explodes. Who thought that was a good idea to depict? This film already had its fill of eyeball trauma with the ocular extraction instrument, but now this? It's just awful. It does lead to a great punch as Hulk pounds Thor. Before this, they seemed a bit antagonistic but this might just be the start of their love/hate relationship as they both learn they're comfortable beating on each other. Erik, on the other hand, is by himself and comes to on the roof of Stark Tower. We try to deduce why he doesn't go through the same pop art Warhol color trip that Clint went through and think we landed on something that works. Well, we all really know that he's in it for the great stories he'll be able to tell later, right? We also get to deal with the leviathan, which for some reason now decides it's going to fly through a building. But is it? We ponder the existence of these creatures, wondering if they're really gentle giants like whale sharks forced to do the bidding of the Chitauri, perhaps even controlled by someone on board their mother ship. Perhaps all it's wanting is for someone to help it. Unfortunately, Hulk doesn't care. (He also doesn't care about anyone working in this building or who will have to repair it.) He leaps onto the leviathan and then... somehow pulls it off course. We try to figure out how this happens. Can Hulk change mass? We end the conversation talking about Natasha taking on the Chitauri on her own and being exhausted from it, yet still pushing forward. We love that about her. We're not as much fans of her Black Widow's Bite, wishing she were given more opportunities to do interesting things with it. We do ponder the journey the character of Hulk takes through this franchise and acknowledge that this was a necessary bit of character development for him as they couldn't just have a giant, green, uncontrollable monster rampaging every time he hulked out. But we do miss scary Hulk.Hulk's smashing does give us a chance to talk about the buildings in the area and exactly how many Chitauri he takes out (hint: it's not many). Minute One Hundred Thirteen: From Bringing Down the Leviathan to Cap's Plan for ThorJames Anderson and Colin Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast join us in this episode! In the one-hundred-thirteenth minute of The Avengers...It's a big one! We've got the death of the leviathan but really, we're here for the hero moment with the camera revolving around all six of our heroes, now finally THE AVENGERS. It's a great moment. Before we get there, we do talk a bit more about the demise of the leviathan and debate if its death should include more goo and grossness all over the streets. We also draw some comarisons to the graboids in Tremors that go nowhere because James has never seen it. There's talk about the nature of viscera on the lens, not to mention potentially steamy leviathan breath fogging the lens as it crashes off the viaduct. There's a documentary feel to it all for sure that the director loves, but it might be riding the line. The death of their mother (we've already proven that the leviathan is the Chitauri mama) fills all the Chitauri with rage to the point where one seemingly rips its own face off. Oh wait, that's a mask. So does that help them breathe in space then? Too many questions...The hero shot is the response to the screaming Chitauri. Hulk screams. Clint nocks. Thor wields. Natasha... loads. Steve readies. Iron Man... stands. They all get into their pose and it works well. Plus, it plays into the nature of the comic book origins with something that really feels like it could've been a splash page. From this, we get more leviathans which triggers Tony to essentially put Steve in charge finally, and the team goes to work. It's a minute full of fantastic moments. But first, we get to enjoy Mark Ruffalo at his rumpliest with his perfect reaction to everything going on. We talk about Natasha's comments, Bruce's apology, how that plays based on what happened, and the fact that Thor didn't get an apology when he really took more hits than Natasha. It leads us to a moment of confusion as we try to sort out why Tony always seemed to expect Bruce to arrive. Was it aspirational? Was he tracking him? Is it just the scientist rom-com meet-cute connection they have? Hard to tell. Regardless, he decides to bring the party, aka. the sweet sea cow of a leviathan that Hulk decides to destroy. It's terrible. It's beautiful. And miraculously, our heroes get nary a scratch. Weird, but not really bothersome. This minute focuses on the fight that our non-supers – Clint and Natasha – have with the Chitauri army in front of Grand Central Terminal. They're tough and they each have some great moves! Sure, they're less than super but they still hold their own!It does make us wonder why Cap shows up then. Did he think they needed help? Or does the fact that immediately after he arrives we get Thor and Bruce showing up too, that perhaps everyone thought he was calling for a team meeting? Perhaps. It does lead to a great moment of comedy in the eye of this Chitauri hurricane when Bruce arrives on that old motorcycle. So great. That's right, we get to talk about the NYPD taking on the Chitauri, even after finding out the National Guard isn't coming. It does give us a chance to talk about the nature of these military organizations and why, perhaps, it makes sense to not feature them in these superhero films. After all, if all the USA's military might was also here, wouldn't it seem to diminish the power of our heroes a bit? And make this feel like Independence Day? We get to talk about two more actors entering the MCU – Robert Clohessy and Enver Gjokaj. Turns out Gjokaj will actually be returning to the MCU but in the past as someone in Agent Carter. And we get to talk about their reaction to what's ostensibly some guy in a Halloween costume hopping onto the top of a car and giving them orders. That leads us to Tony and the leviathan he blasts with chaff, leading to massive destruction to not only 3 Park Ave, but also the Sabrett Hot Dog cart. It sure seems that way. This minute gives us a chance to celebrate the power of the non-supers as we really get to see Natasha and Clint doing their best to stop as many Chitauri as they can. We get a bit confused about bus placement, but eventually we figure it out. It doesn't really answer our questions as to why Clint starts by taking people out the bus window before prying the door open. Judging by the fire blast on the bus door, we think there may have been some deleted material in here that was excised. Clint also gets to use his arrows, and we get to talk about the fancy quiver he has paired with his bow and the many arrow heads – specifically the burst shot here. Nat shoots a Chitauri in the face, and behind it we see how limber these Chitauri are. All through this, we also get great video game running and jumping beats from Steve. Turns out he had a whole deleted scene where he ran off to save a family under attack from a very persistent Chitauri. Now Cap's back, but is it his super vision that sees Loki flying by? We laugh a bit about the Chitauri that bursts into the office and starts shooting at what seem to be accountants. Just seems like a weird power move. Iron Man chases the leviathan up 5th Ave and we get some fantastic shots of him doing so. Plus, why is he asking about Hulk? Does he know something we don't know? Don't they have missiles or something? And if they did shoot a missile at Stark Tower and knocked it over, would the Tesseract still be emitting the blue beam, just pointing in a different direction from wherever it fell? Or would it stop? Regardless, we learn that Clint doesn't know how to maneuver the quinjet like Nat did in Stuttgart because he gets hit by Loki's blue pew-pew scepter blast, and down they go. We talk a bit about the buildings in the area to get a lay of the land, even going so far as to try to figure out which company the two dressed-for-business extras work for. We do wonder a bit why Steve stayed in the back the entire time instead of parkouring out. Minute One Hundred Four: From The Blue Beam to Thor Confronting His BrotherFilm Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-fourth minute of The Avengers...Tony fights on, but only in a wide shot. This minute focuses on the people of New York as the Chitauri fly down (rather quickly) and begin raining down on them with blasts from their chariots and forearm guns. It's quite a mess. But this is also where we get to really meet our waitress Beth! That's right, we land in Pershing Square Cafe where we see her and some customers fleeing the shots, eventually taking shelter in the Cafe. That means we get to do the IMDb game for Ashley Johnson, and Pete realizes he's seen her a bunch on Critical Role. We have a great locked-off shot from within a car as it flips over, but we also have a lot of shots that feel like sets, full of artifice. Or perhaps just full of Cleveland-ites as that's where it was filmed. We have a small deleted scene between Loki and The Other that doesn't work at all, and that brings us to the point where Thor makes it to New York to confront his brother. We love the way Tony's new suit attaches itself to him. But the pedestrians... wouldn't they be incinerated? Or at least have their eyes filled with dust particles? That's a fairly brutal spraying they get from Tony. At the very least, they'd be blown over. There's chat about the POV shot we get through the mask then the HUD as it closes over Tony's face, not to mention chat about the way the shot construction in these moments never quite lines up as well as it should. Is Andy the only person who thinks of Robert Paulson when Tony brings up Phil? Perhaps...This minute is the start of the blue beam! It's quite a trope, and certainly does its job here. It also means we finally get to talk a LOT about the Chitauri as they start their journey through the hole into the skies over Manhattan. Is it disorienting for them to come out and essentially be flying straight down? Seems like it may be confusing. Tony's got some cool mini-missiles in his shoulder, and there are lots of amazing shots in this minute. Too bad the enemy is so... bland. Minute One Hundred Two: From Everything on Loki to The Mark VII Attaching to TonyFilm Critic Ewan Graf from the Quiet on Set podcast joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-second minute of The Avengers...Tony's finishing his response to Loki, and this is where he gets close to calling out the name of the film again in this scene. It plays, but it might be too clever by half. The real issue comes immediately afterward when Loki decides to try his mind control scepter tap on Tony's chest, only to hit the arc reactor. While this is a funny gag, and certainly in the director's style, it does lead to a question we have about what they're trying to do with Loki by this point in the film. As the antagonist, it certainly seems like they're diminishing him so they can build up the Chitauri army. Is that fair to him? Perhaps that's why the end of this film feels a bit like it's got an antagonist problem. Still, it is a funny line. From there, we get to talk about Stark tech and how it perpetually seems to be ready at the very last possible second. First, why isn't Tony more injured by the two times Loki tosses him? And how does Loki feel after that Mark VII blow to the face? This begins our conversation about the Mark VII, the way it emerges, and the start of it attaching itself to Tony. It's pretty cool. Tony doesn't seem to care because as he says, “We have a Hulk.” It's a fun line, but he doesn't say “the Hulk” or just “Hulk”... is he implying he knows more about where these gamma experiments are going to go? Or it is just how it's written? It's more of the fun confrontational conversation between these two. It's a battle of the egos, truly. But this is where we really get to see what Tony's trying to do. So... should Tony have maybe realized something like that and not blasted at it? And meanwhile, was Loki just standing below giggling as he watched Tony's attempt? What this leads to – plan B – is Tony landing on his platform and letting the car wash take the Mark VI off. This may be the last time we get to see the outfit except maybe on display. But it's a chance for Tony and Loki to head inside and confront one another.Tony's great at this sort of scene. It's all about his ulterior motives – getting his Mark VII bracelets on – which will happen in tomorrow's minute, but today, he gets things set up. He tells Loki he's threatening him and offers him a drink. He also runs down the list of heroes that he has to stop Loki, even going so far as to call them The Avengers. That's right, we get the title of the film called out in this minute. It only too 100 minutes of screen time to get here! We love Loki's reaction to hearing his brother brought up, and it's clearly no accident that Tony mentions him first. Plus, Tony pokes fun at Loki's scepter by giving it its own nickname, earning it its spot in our Tony Nickname Tracker! (It's #6 from this film, for those wondering.) Knowing what we know about the deleted scenes with her, this moment actually feels like a point where the character makes a shift, starting to see what he sees. It's a great moment, and is weighed heavily by Fury's comment about them needing a push, which feels very much on par with Coulson's dying words. It still leaves us thinking gross thoughts about how Fury got the blood on the cards. From there, however, we shift to the start of act three as Tony, Natasha, Steve, and Clint head out of the helicarrier to find the Tesseract and stop Loki. We're still left with some helicarrier departure questions, like is it safe to actually fly under the helicarrier at this point? Yeah... we didn't think so.Tony heads to Stark Tower, though the shots seem to suggest he did a few zigzags to get there, perhaps to get a better reaction from Erik? May not have mattered, because Erik's in crazy town, too excited about what the Tesseract is up to. He's an interesting character, and we debate what he'd be doing with the Tesseract if Loki hadn't taken over his mind. We think he'd likely be doing these experiments anyway. But Tony blasts the Tesseract and is thrown back. Selvig's also hit and knocked unconscious, but why didn't that blast rip his clothes apart or anything? He was awfully close to ground zero. Regardless, we do get a glimpse of our waitress again! Okay, so the line is really only there to get Clint in the room where he and Steve meet, but it's an awkward line. But Clint is better and seems to be ready for action! That means it's been over an hour and a half before we actually get to have Hawkeye be a hero in the film. Phew. That leads us to our let's-kick-off-act-three-with-a-heroes-getting-ready-montage montage! Thor's in the field in New Jersey (actually Ohio) whipping up a storm and calling the lightning. Tony fixes his mask and dons it. Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Captain America all grab their weapons and head to a quinjet. It's exciting stuff! We also ponder how Thor actually figures out where he's going. As the minute draws to a close, we see Maria Hill join Nick Fury in the bridge. Minute Ninety Six: From ‘Red in My Ledger' to ‘We Are Not Soldiers'Matthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode! In the ninety-sixth minute of The Avengers...We wrap up our conversation about Clint and Natasha as she, once again, brings up the red in her ledger. Does this play? We certainly have thoughts. We also talk about Steve finding Tony in the detention area as they talk about the loss of Coulson. The scene plays well and brings interesting dynamics into their relationship and this moment. When did Steve make the decision to get back in the fight and try bringing them together? Off screen, we suppose. The idea of soldiers/non-soldiers and why they fight is a big point of discussion for sure. Minute Ninety Five: From Clint Unsure of Loki's Whereabouts to Natasha CompromisedMatthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode! In the ninety-fifth minute of The Avengers...We're nearing the end of the conversation in the sick bay between Natasha and Clint. This minute, their dialogue leads to several issues we have. One, didn't Clint know more of the plan? It seems to be convenient for the plot for him to not know now as we need Tony to make the discovery shortly, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. Two, Natasha's a spy, not a soldier? Since when? Three, are we now meant to believe that Loki's comments to Natasha earlier really did have an impact on her? We do like that this minute shows Natasha as someone willing to take on Loki by herself if that's what it takes. Plus, Clint finally drinks the water! Minute Ninety Four: From Brain Play to Loki Got AwayMatthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode! In the ninety-fourth minute of The Avengers...Natasha and Clint continue their conversation as Clint works through the dregs of Loki's mind control. The bg question, of course, is why does she pour him water then never give it to him? But seriously, this minute does give us a chance to discuss Barton's mansplaining the trauma of being under mind control to someone who's been-there-done-that. And she gently reminds him of that. But shouldn't he know that? We also ponder his question about why he's here, giving it several different interpretations. There's the debate about who's responsible for the deaths at their hands when under mind control. Is writing it out as the mind stone too easy an out? And, of course, there's the ever technical cognitive recalibration. Minute Ninety Three: From Big and Green and Buck Ass Nude to Clint Needing to Level OutMatthew Fox from the Superhero Ethics Podcast and season 4 joins us in this episode! In the ninety-third minute of The Avengers...Bruce continues his conversation with Harry Dean Stanton, the old security guard. We debate exactly what happened to Hulk/Bruce if Stanton saw him big and green and buck ass nude. Does that mean Hulk's clothes ripped off in his descent? Pete tries making the case that he became Bruce midair, then Hulked out again before impact before going unconscious and turning to Bruce yet again. It doesn't make a lot of sense no matter how you slice it, but it makes for fun dialogue to come out of Stanton's mouth. Perhaps that's the only reason it's there? We also chat about the extended content of this scene, because it gives a great extra bit of conflict for Bruce. Why did they cut it? And does it reveal that they're actually on the north end of Jersey right across from Manhattan? Does that make sense? From there, we enter pop-art Warhol-esque Barton as he struggles to break free from the mind stone's power. But why this crazy color treatment? It's not even Clint's POV. Does Erik go through this same thing all alone on the top of Stark Tower? Natasha's trying to help him, and this is really our chance to bring Clint into the heroes' side of the story.
