Send us a textThis week, we dive into a solid 1980s hard rock debut that is often forgotten. In December of 1986, Tesla released Mechanical Resonance. A hard rock album that had a sound different from the hair metal of the time.Mike, Tim, and Dayton share stories and opinions of this hard rock classic. link to the Dayton cut of the albumhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/2GRLTtjOTTu8SHtSYfUPru?si=7IyDuqtQQnWW-_9ZiS7-fQTwitter @dockingbay77podFacebook @dockingbay77podcastdockingbay77podcast@gmail.compatreon.com/dockingbay77podcasthttps://discord.gg/T8Nt3YB7
The 80s was a golden age for metal music, defined by its diversity and outrageous spirit. Tesla's 1986 debut, "Mechanical Resonance," stands out as an album encapsulating the era's essence. In this decade, MTV reigned supreme, catapulting metal into the global spotlight. Icons from Iron Maiden to Poison rode this wave, gaining immense popularity through the channel's 24-hour influence. Yet, amidst the glitz and glam that defined the era, Tesla emerged with a distinct blue-collar ethos. The question arises: How did this band carve such a unique identity in a scene saturated with spectacle?A significant part of Tesla's unique approach can be attributed to the influence of Tom Zutaut, a producer whose Midas touch had previously worked wonders with bands like Guns N' Roses. Zutaut, known for his keen ear and ability to nurture a band's intrinsic sound, played a pivotal role in Tesla's transformation. Under his guidance, Tesla evolved from their initial "City Kidd" persona, challenging and reshaping the conventional norms of metal. Zutaut's expertise in balancing commercial appeal with artistic integrity helped Tesla craft an album that stood apart in content and style."Mechanical Resonance" is much more than a mere collection of songs. It represents the depth of Tesla's musical talent, with each track showcasing its versatility and a deliberate avoidance of the clichés that many contemporaries embraced. The album introduced Tesla to the world and left a lasting impact on how 80s metal was perceived and how it continued to evolve.Revisiting "Mechanical Resonance" today is both a nostalgic journey and an exploration of an era dominated by MTV and larger-than-life bands. This album beckons us to delve deeper, prompting us to understand and appreciate the multifaceted nature of 80s metal. As we explore this iconic period, we're invited to look beyond the stereotypes of big hair and spandex, uncovering the stories and the creativity that fueled one of music's most dynamic decades.Songs in This Episode:* Intro - Modern Day Cowboy* 29:35 - Cumin' Atcha Live* 35:21 - Gettin' Better* 38:49 - EZ Come EZ Go* 42:32 - Modern Day CowboyMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of metal music, we rely on you, our listeners. For the latest leg of their tour through rock and metal's highlights and lowlights the boys were given the brief of 'transport'. The rules were simple - the band name, album title or album cover had to have a demonstrable link to a form of transport. Like all the pod themes, it should have been easy. But then Steve and Rich hadn't factored in Mark's wide-ranging interpretation of what transport might actually mean, nor the fact that he failed to make the link between Steve's album choice and a well-known electric car brand. Eventually, though, they settled down to chew over the various merits - or otherwise - of three debut albums from three 1980s outfits who would go on to have varying degrees of success. First up was Def Leppard's 1980 cherry-popper On Through The Night - an album the band has since more or less airbrushed from their own history - and completely airbrushed from their live set. Which, according to Mark, gives a small insight into how fast and loose musicians can play with the loyalty of fans who were there at the start. Next in line was Terraplane's Black And White, a record that sowed the first seeds of what would set the band on the road to public affection once they rebuffed their label's attempts to turn them into Rick Springfield-esque pop rockers, changed their name to Thunder and dialled up the guitars. Finally, another of rock's finest debuts from Sacramento rockers Tesla and Mechanical Resonance, released in 1986. As Steve said - it's hard to imagine a time without the majesty of Modern Day Cowboy ...

On the 14th Episode and Season 2 opener of the Album Review Crew (formerly known as Bonus Episodes), Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1986 platinum debut album from Tesla, Mechanical Resonance. The album and the band were a departure from the LA hard rock/metal scene of the 1980's. Filled with Jeff Keith's raspy vocals, the dual guitar brilliance of Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch and the tight rhythm section of Brian Wheat and Troy Luccketta, Tesla was different in sound and looks. Well crafted songs, acoustic guitars and great lyrics by a band in jeans and t-shirts set Tesla apart from their contemporaries. Mechanical Resonance was the beginning of a trend to return back to the classic hard rock sound. As usual the guys breakdown the tracks and rank the songs.
