The My Weekly Mixtape: A Playlist Curation Podcast is a fantastic show that has quickly become my go-to music podcast. Hosted by Brian Colburn, the format of the show is unique and offers something for every music fan. Each episode focuses on a specific topic or theme, and Brian and his guests curate a mixtape of songs related to that topic. What sets this podcast apart is the inclusion of playlist links for each episode, allowing listeners to easily access and listen to the songs they may not be familiar with.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the laid-back and relaxed atmosphere that Brian creates during conversations. The guests genuinely seem to enjoy discussing music, and it comes across in their enthusiasm and engagement with the discussions. Brian's knowledge of music is impressive, and he ensures that each episode provides an educational experience about the artists and songs featured. Additionally, the inclusion of big-name guests adds another layer of excitement to the show.

Another great aspect of My Weekly Mixtape is its ability to evoke nostalgia. Before iTunes and streaming services became popular, creating a mixtape was a cherished way to share music or create personalized collections. This podcast brings back that joy and frustration of carefully selecting songs that fit together seamlessly on a mixtape. It's a delightful trip down memory lane for those who remember making mixtapes.

As for drawbacks, there really aren't many to speak of. Some listeners may find it challenging if they're not familiar with all the songs discussed on each episode, but as mentioned earlier, the playlist links provided make it easy to discover new music.

In conclusion, The My Weekly Mixtape: A Playlist Curation Podcast is an absolute gem for any music fan. Brian's charismatic hosting style combined with his deep knowledge of music makes for an enjoyable listening experience every week. The nostalgic feel of creating mixtapes adds an extra layer of fun, while the diverse range of topics and guests ensures that there's something for everyone. If you love music, I highly recommend giving this podcast a listen.

This week, I'm joined by The Doobie Brothers' Ed Toth to talk about his musical journey that started as a child, jamming along to songs by the band, to his 9 year role as the drummer of Vertical Horizon which, in a full circle moment, lead to his role playing drums for the Doobie Brothers, a role he's held for the last 2 decades. In this episode, we discuss: the stories behind Vertical Horizon's hit album “Everything You Want” (which turned 25 last year, and was a feature of a My Weekly Mixtape Album Dive episode), as well as the 2003 follow up “Go;” the decision behind his departure from Vertical Horizon and the band's continued relationship to this day; his role within the Doobie Brothers, that started out as one of the dual drummers, along side of Michael Hossack as well as Tony Pia, to his role as the band's sole drummer; his 2017 project Button, which also features fellow Doobie Brothers member John Cowan, along with Keith Howland (formerly of Chicago); the songs that are essential to a Doobie Brothers live show, which includes more than just the radio staples; playing the band's albums “Toulouse Street” & “The Captain & Me” in their entirety; the band's plans for 2025, and so much more! This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why?  Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  This ep. includes the final 25 responses! This week, I am joined by Mr. Big's Billy Sheehan & we're diving into the stories behind songs from across their discography! From their worldwide # 1 smash hit “To Be With You,” (which was never intended to be a single); to fan favorites “Addicted To That Rush,” “Colorado Bulldog” & “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song),” to their cover of Cat Stevens' “Wild World,” we cover the Mr. Big musical spectrum.  We also discuss: their new live album “The Big Finish: Live” which serves as the band's triumphant victory lap, given their retirement from touring; where the band name “Mr. Big” came from; the unique story behind the “Wind Me Up” riff; Billy's unique approach to the bass solo, and how his has evolved over the decades; a little joke the members of Rush played on the band; and so much more! If the artist / band had more than one song crack the Billboard US Hot 100 Top 40 list, it was out of contention; If the artist / band NEVER cracked the top 40, but the song was still a recognizable hit, then it's fair game!
