The debate over police officer education requirements has been ongoing for decades, but today, it's more pressing than ever. With some states mandating a college degree for police officers, agencies face law enforcement hiring challenges, balancing police recruitment needs with preparing officers for the evolving demands of the profession. Does a college degree for police officers produce better decision-making and leadership, or does it create unnecessary police recruitment challenges in an already difficult hiring environment? In this episode of Policing Matters, host Jim Dudley speaks with Officer Hunter Panning, a school resource officer in Chaska, Minnesota, who has extensively researched law enforcement hiring, police leadership, and the impact of higher education on officer performance. Panning, who holds a master's degree in public administration and is pursuing a doctorate in leadership and adult learning, shares key insights into how police officer education requirements affect decision-making, use-of-force incidents, and officer recruitment. About our sponsor eSOPH is a secure, cloud-based, pre-employment background investigation software system designed specifically for public safety agencies. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Somebody Say HallelujahLinda Sloan of Hopkins, Minn., is the executive director for the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. She predicts audiences will be on their feet at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul this weekend, moved by “The Sound of Gospel: An Anthology Depicting the Rich History and Evolution of Gospel Music.”The play is written by Rev. William H. Pierce of 2nd Chance Outreach and directed by Academy Award-nominated artist Jevetta Steele, with musical direction by Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Steele. The all-ages show will be performed Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. Linda says: I cannot say enough about this performance. It is amazing. When I went to the show a couple years ago, I was just blown away by the caliber of the talent and then the meaning of the songs. It's just a phenomenal show. You'll hear anything from spirituals to praise and worship. It is just an opportunity for individuals who maybe have never really experienced gospel to understand the roots, the roots of where it comes from and why it is spiritual music. It's so energetic. There are a couple little somber moments, because it is a history of gospel music, and there have been things in the past that maybe occur that required spiritual music. But for the most part, it's just one of those “toe-tapping, get-on-your-feet, clapping, as if you were in a Baptist church” shows. — Linda Sloan A play about DREAMers navigating life Actor and singer Anna Hashizume of Minneapolis recommends seeing Frank Theatre's current production of the play “Sanctuary City,” about two undocumented teens growing up in Newark, N.J., post 9/11. She describes the play as a series of very short scenes performed by an outstanding three-person cast. The play runs in the intimate Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis through Feb. 23. Masks are required for the Feb. 7 and Feb. 16 performances. Frank Theatre, which mounted the play, specializes in works that spark conversation, and Anna says this show feels incredibly timely.Anna says: I know when [director] Wendy Knox first chose the play we didn't know the political climate that was going to be happening at this moment in time, but it is a very timely play for what is happening in our nation right now. Theater has a lot of different functions. It can just be entertainment, which is also lovely at a time like this, but also being able to be educated and see different life experiences in front of your eyes in a relatively safe space can open something up in all of us. — Anna HashizumeA breath of spring Donna Winberg of Deephaven, Minn., loves to walk the trails at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska, so she's been able to pop inside the visitor center to watch preparations for the Spring Flower show. The enchanted garden displays are now open to viewers with an Arboretum ticket daily through March 16. In addition to the Spring Flower show, Donna recommends continuing through the Synder Building to the Conservatory, which is currently packed with orchids and tropical blooms, with a stop at the Rootstock Café for a bite to eat. Additional ticketed events include an Art Fair on Feb. 15 and 16, After Hours with Flowers and Afternoon Tea events. MPR chief meteorologist Paul Huttner is also a fan; see his pictures in a recent Updraft Blog here. Donna describes the scene: You'll be amazed when you see the huge tree trunks they've brought in there, and the mosses and the lichens and the mushrooms. It's just like a breath of spring, which we all need this time of year! What I really love is the local artist work that is incorporated into the displays. There'll be different artists coming in [through the course of the show.] [This week] there are mosaic glass birds and ceramic birds and all sorts of wonderful little fairy houses, bird houses. So you have to stand there and look at things for a while to have it all revealed to you, which is fun.— Donna Winberg

On this edition of Club + Resort Talks, Senior Editor Phil Keren speaks with Phil Anderson, General Manager of Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., about the club's preparations to host the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 12-18. The club is planning to donate all tournament profits to The Loop Community Experience for accessible golf. The goal of this initiative is to unite Minnesota communities by growing the game and making it more accessible to anyone who wants to play. It champions organizations that honor diversity and encourage those with disabilities, as well as veterans, juniors, women, and beginners of all ages to enjoy the game of golf. Anderson talked about The Loop at Chaska, a 9-hole golf course located a block from Hazeltine that was redesigned to make it easier for beginners and playable for those with some disabilities. Anderson talked about some of the other organizations that will benefit from next month's U.S. Amateur Championship, as well as upcoming improvement plans at the club. Phil and Editor-In-Chief Rob Thomas also highlighted an upgrade project happening at Island Resort & Casino in Harris, Mich., the selection of the Riviera Country Club in Palisades, Calif. as the host site for the men's and women's golf competitions at the 2028 Olympic Games, and an amenity improvement plan that will soon begin at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.
On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business, chats with Brock Orlowski, MBA, CDORS, USPTA Elite, PPR, Director of Racquet Sports at Fort Wayne (Ind.) Country Club. The two talk about everything from growing the racquets industry through The Directors' Club of America and the inaugural Directors' Club Retreat, to cultivating the rapidly growing interest in racquet sports—pickleball, tennis, padel, and more. Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed some innovative projects and events happening at golf courses around the country. Canal Shores golf course in Evanston, Ill. will now be known as The Evans at Canal Shores, offering a connection to the namesake of the Evans Scholars Foundation, Chick Evans. The new golf course will re-open in 2025 with an upgraded par-60, 18-hole golf course, youth development training center and Western Golf Association Caddie Academy. Evans attended high school in Evanston and became a great amateur golfer. Instead of turning professional, Evans worked with the Western Golf Association to use the earnings from his golf career to establish the Evans Scholars Foundation in 1930. Wanakah Country Club in Hamburg, N.Y. recently hosted its ninth annual golf marathon. This year's event teed off at 5:20 a.m. and included 28 players who played and walked 100 holes of golf in the one-day tournament. The event, known as “The Walk Fore Luca & Carly,” benefits Roswell Park's Courage of Carly Fund for programs supporting pediatric cancer patients and their families, and Live Like Luca, the Luca S. Calanni Foundation. A proposed short course at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. and The Loop Golf Course in Chaska, Minn., showcase innovations that cater to diverse golfing needs and abilities. Stanwich Club's short course, named “The Cauldron,” offers a quicker game with about half the number of holes of a standard 18-hole course. This format is designed for those looking to improve their skills or enjoy a faster round of golf. The Loop Golf Course in Chaska, Minn. has emerged as a groundbreaking facility designed with wheelchair users in mind. This 9-hole, par-28 course, created through a partnership between the city of Chaska and Barrier Free Golf, eliminates traditional barriers such as sand traps and rough terrain to ensure accessibility for all players.

This case started in Arizona calling for an injunction against the machines featuring Kari Lake and Mark Finchem as the plaintiffs. Federal District Court Judge John Tuchi dismissed the lawsuit based upon standing and ruled that the claims were “too speculative”. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that ruling. It has now been brought to the United States Supreme Court. Please share this page everywhere so that they can read firsthand about how the integrity of our elections have been compromised. Policing has changed radically over the past several years. Bad policing makes the news and affects public opinion, making a hard job, even harder to do and a challenge to recruit new officers. Given the fact that the Carver County Sheriff's Department are responsible for policing everywhere in Carver County except Chaska, we thought an update from Carver County Sherriff Jason Kamerud was due. Jason is a lifelong Carver County resident and is fully invested in the community. He talks about recent challenges and the proactive way the department is addressing those issues. As our area continues to grow, the spotlight will get even brighter. Innovations and strategic thinking will make all the difference. We hope you enjoy this fast paced conversations with Sherriff Jason Kamerud. (This episode was recorded before the Burnsville shootings. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this terrible and senseless tragedy) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/greg-anderson29/message

It's Friday, July 14th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Afghan Christians continue to suffer under the Taliban Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, religious and civil liberties have rapidly deteriorated under Taliban rule. Christians face regular raids on their homes by the Taliban, frequently receive threats against their jobs and families, and lack access to educational opportunities, reports International Christian Concern. The Taliban has practically eradicated on-the-ground relief efforts by aid groups. Plus, because it's working to completely erase Christianity from the country many Christians have gone underground to avoid being kidnapped by the Taliban “courts.” The rising starvation rates and increasing poverty in Afghanistan create an even higher security threat to these believers since the Taliban is now offering financial compensation to anyone who reports on Christians. Unless ransomed by their families, Christians captured by the “courts” face brutal torture and even death. If redeemed, the survivors and their families, often bankrupt from the exorbitant ransom demands, must flee their homes to avoid repeated kidnappings from the various Taliban gangs. Because many Afghani Muslims are dissatisfied with their religion, they are open to Christianity despite the risks. Believers are hosting secret prayer meetings which is incredibly courageous, considering the implications. Acts 5:29 says, “We ought to obey God rather than man.” Secret Service closes cocaine investigation in The White House On Thursday, the Secret Service officially and mysteriously closed its investigation into how cocaine ended up in the West Wing of the White House without identifying a suspect, reports ABC News. In its report, the Secret Service said, "There was no surveillance video footage found that provided investigative leads or any other means for investigators to identify who may have deposited the found substance in this area." Hollywood shuts down as actors go on strike Tens of thousands of Hollywood actors went on strike at midnight Thursday, effectively bringing the giant movie and television business to a halt as they join writers in the first industry-wide walkout for 63 years, reports AFP. The Screen Actors Guild issued a strike order after last-ditch talks with studios on their demands over dwindling pay and the threat posed by artificial intelligence ended without a deal. College student caught vandalizing pregnancy center A college student is facing federal charges for the vandalism of a pro-life pregnancy center in Ohio, as many similar organizations have been vandalized or firebombed following the U.S. Supreme Court's determination that the U.S. Constitution does not contain a right to abortion, reports The Christian Post. Last week, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio announced that Whitney Durant, a 20-year-old Bowling Green State University student, also known as “Soren Monroe,” is facing federal misdemeanor charges for vandalizing a pro-life pregnancy center in Bowling Green, Ohio. On April 15, Ohio Right to Life announced that the Bowling Green Pregnancy Center had been vandalized with the phrases "Fake Clinic," "Jane's Revenge," "Fund Abortion" and "Abort God" on the exterior wall of the pro-life center while the word "Liars" was spray-painted on the window. Jane's Revenge, a pro-abortion terrorist group, is named after the Jane's Collective in Chicago, prior to 1973, who helped mothers kill their babies illegally through abortion. On Whitney's Facebook page, she describes herself as "a communist trying to spread the gay agenda" who uses "all pronouns." One public post on her page is an ironic request to give money to the National Abortion Rights Action League to celebrate her birthday. But apparently, the abortion terrorist doesn't want to allow children inside the womb the blessing of having a birthday. In Psalm 139:13-14, King David wrote, “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.” 14-year-old Canadian donates his tithe money to The Worldview Theo Jantz, a 14-year-old Worldview listener in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, graciously donated $13.13. Because his parents noted his age in the space alongside his name on their credit card donation, I gave Theo a call yesterday. THEO: “So, I had $14 in my tithing jar. We tithe 10% of the money we earn. And that was just the money that had collected in the jar over time. And I wanted to do something with it. So, I decided to give it to The Worldview.” He explained why he gave the unusual amount of $13.13. THEO: “I did $13.13 because at the moment, it's ‘something' dollars and 88 cents, I think. I thought it'd be funny to hear ‘something' [dollars] and one cent.” Theo cited the sources for the money he has earned. THEO: “Well, it would come from three different things. [1] Picking weeds. We get paid by the garbage can. (laughs) [2] And I sell stuff for my dad and get 10% on a Canadian Craigslist. Random stuff that he has around that he doesn't really want anymore. [3] I have a very, very small business that I've made of cleaning cars.” The 14-year-old talked about a story he especially liked from Thursday's newscast. THEO: “I liked the story of the archaeologist who found Sodom. I thought that was really interesting. I really liked the part where the pottery was melted and burned. It was really good proof that it actually was Sodom. We listen to it as a family in the morning, in our morning time. I like the ending where you say ‘seize the day for Jesus Christ. ' And our whole family says it with you.” Listen to Theo's challenge to Worldview listeners. THEO: “I would like to encourage other people who have their tithing jar piling up to give it to The Worldview or to some other worthy cause.” McMANUS: “Theo, I really appreciate it. It means so much because every little bit helps.” THEO: “Thank you!” McMANUS: “God bless you. Bye bye now.” THEO: “Bye.” 16 Worldview listeners gave $5,053.13 Wow! We exceeded the 10-donor goal yesterday by 6 donors as 16 Worldview listeners gave toward our $80,000 goal by Monday, July 31st to keep this unique Christian newscast on the air. Our thanks to Theo in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada who gave $13.13 as well as Faith in Coeur D Alene, Idaho, Mary in Chaska, Minnesota, Bonnie in Happy Valley, Oregon, Brenda in Simla, Colorado, and Jerry in Booneville, Mississippi – each of whom gave $50. We thank God for B.C. in Grandview, Washington who gave $100, as well as Raymond in Las Cruces, New Mexico and Dawna in Troy, Montana – both of whom gave $150, Elaine in San Antonio, Texas who gave $200, and Cheryl in Cumming, Georgia who pledged $20/month for 12 months for a total gift of $240. And we're grateful for the generosity of Joe and Emily in Alexandria, Indiana who gave $250 as well as Kenneth in Carthage, North Carolina and Luke in Esperance, Washington – both of whom gave $300, Andrew in Calgary, Alberta, Canada who pledged $25/month for 12 months for a total gift of $300, and an anonymous donor in Bardstown, Kentucky who gave $2,800. Those 16 new donations add up to $5,053.13. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $19,957.01 (Crowd cheering sound effect) In order to hit our $40,000 immediate goal by midnight tonight, we still need to raise $20,042.99. Could you be one of 10 Worldview listeners to pledge $100/month for 12 months? Then, we would need 6 to pledge $50/month for 12 months. And another 12 listeners to pledge $25/month for 12 months. We are half way through the race. It would be so exciting to announce on Monday that you helped us reach the $40,000 midway goal! Just go to TheWorldview.com and click on “Give” at the top right to give what the Lord is prompting you to donate. Make sure to select the “Recurring” tab if that's your wish. Plus, I have an important fundraising update to share this coming Monday. So, stay tuned! Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, July 14th in the year of our Lord 2023. Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Dr. Scott Jensen walk through his accomplished professional life in family medicine, as well as his successful run as a Minnesota senator, all before having his reputation in both fields dismantled for what may be purely political reasons. Six investigations across nearly five years and numerous allegations without cohesion, proof, or relation have amounted to nothing, save for the clarification of Dr. Jensen's newest goal: to take on the medical board that had no justification for its actions. Given the parallels between Dr. Jensen and Dr. Peterson's experiences, this interview was not only inevitable but paramount. Dr. Scott Jensen has practiced family medicine in Carver County, Minnesota, for 35 years. Jensen then served in the Minnesota Senate (2017-2021) and was vice-chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, as well as the Republican Governor candidate in the 2022 election. He has served many organizations as a board member or chair including the Waconia School Board, numerous Rotary and Lions clubs, several Chambers of Commerce, and bank boards. He is an avid pilot and writer, publishing his first book in 2015, “Relationship Matters” and his second book, “We've Been Played” in 2022. In 2001, he founded Catalyst Medical Clinic which now has offices located in Watertown and Chaska.
