Segment 1: The Secret to Great Soup Chef Robert: Let's start with the basics. The best soups begin with a great foundation—and that means building flavor from the bottom up. Start with what I call the "holy trinity" of soup-making: onions, carrots, and celery. Sauté them in a little olive oil until they're soft and fragrant. That's your soup's base note—like the rhythm section in a jazz band. Then, build from there! Add garlic, herbs, and spices. Think thyme, rosemary, cumin, or smoked paprika—whatever fits your vibe. Remember, soup is all about layers of flavor. Take your time. Let things caramelize. The longer you simmer, the deeper the magic gets. Segment 2: Chef's Recipe Corner – Roasted Tomato Basil Soup Alright, it's time to cook! Today's feature recipe is my Roasted Tomato Basil Soup—easy, delicious, and completely diabetes-friendly. Here's how to do it: 1. Roast 2 pounds of fresh tomatoes, a head of garlic, and an onion with a drizzle of olive oil—until they're caramelized and slightly browned. 2. Blend them up with 2 cups of low-sodium vegetable broth. 3. Add a handful of fresh basil and a splash of balsamic vinegar. 4. Simmer for 10 minutes—Give it a quick blend and that's it! Serve it with a sprinkle of Parmesan or a dollop of Greek yogurt instead of cream for that silky finish. Low in carbs, high in flavor, and your taste buds will do a happy dance. Segment 3: Ask Chef Robert Alright, it's time for Ask Chef Robert! Question: "How can I thicken soup without using cream or flour?" Great question! You've got a few options: Puree some of the soup—blend half and stir it back in for a thicker texture. Add pureed beans or lentils—they add body and protein. Or, one of my favorites—cauliflower puree! It's creamy, low-carb, and blends like a dream. Healthy hacks for a happy pot of soup! Segment 4: The Spice of Life Let's talk flavor! Herbs and spices don't just make soup taste amazing—they're packed with antioxidants and can help support healthy blood sugar. Try these in your next batch: Turmeric – bright color, anti-inflammatory. Cumin – adds warmth and depth. Fresh herbs like parsley or basil – add them at the end for a burst of freshness. Remember, herbs and spices are your best friends in the kitchen. No salt overload needed—just natural flavor power! Segment 5: Final Ladle – Happy Diabetic Wisdom Before we close the lid on today's episode, here's a little Happy Diabetic wisdom: "Good soup isn't just food—it's comfort, connection, and creativity in a bowl." So as you head into soup season, take a little time to slow down. Chop some veggies. Let the pot simmer. And share a bowl with someone you love. Because when you cook from the heart, every spoonful tastes better.
Black cumin seed oil has a long history of traditional use, and its benefits trace to thymoquinone. However, it also contains the omega-6 fat linoleic acid (LA), which exposes you to risks that may outweigh its benefits Thymoquinone makes up only about 0.1% to 0.9% of black cumin seed oil, so obtaining meaningful amounts through this oil requires consuming substantial quantities of LA Black cumin seed oil contains roughly 50% to 62% LA by weight, placing it in the same high-LA category as other vegetable oils, such as cottonseed oil Typical dosing of 1 to 3 teaspoons daily delivers roughly 2.5 to 7.5 grams of LA, representing a meaningful increase over an already elevated modern baseline intake Standardized thymoquinone extracts are a better alternative, commonly sold as 5%, 10%, or 20% formulations. These allow you to obtain benefits from a traditional remedy without the LA burden

In this episode of Free to Speak, Dane is joined by University of Auckland academic David Cumin to unpack the free speech flashpoints that follow moments of national shock. They start with the Adelaide Writers' Festival controversy - where Palestinian activist Randa Abdel-Fattah was disinvited, sparking a mass boycott - and dig into what “principled” free speech looks like when the same institutions have previously sidelined pro-Israel voices. From there, they examine how Australia rushed through new hate speech laws after the Bondi attack, why fast-tracked censorship powers often backfire, and how “hate speech” frameworks tend to become partisan tools rather than genuine protections. The conversation ranges across hypocrisy, public funding and cultural gatekeeping, the unintended consequences of criminalising speech, and why open debate remains the best antidote to extremism - even when the views in question are ugly.Support the showhttps://www.fsu.nz/https://x.com/NZFreeSpeechhttps://www.instagram.com/freespeechnz/https://www.tiktok.com/@freespeechunionnz

Old (fermented) wine that was used for a libation that spills onto grapes will be prohibited or not, depending on it affecting the taste of the grapes. New wine, however, is the subject of dispute - are they only forbidden if the new wine affected their flavor, or any amount would be an issue (it's a machloket between Abaye and Rava, on taste vs. name). Also, the smell of the wine helps evaluate how good it is - via the "bat tiha" - a hole in the wine cask, and the tester would smell the wine at that point (via a tube, etc.). Cumin becomes a parallel example for smell and food, but then it stops short of being a real parallel, because of all the differences between cumin and wine.

Hello, everyone! In today's episode, I delved into the fascinating world of spices, exploring not only how they can enhance the flavor of your meals but also their significant health benefits. Drawing from both research and my clinical experience, I discussed a variety of spices and their potential positive impacts on health. We started with turmeric, which I take daily for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Adding black pepper to turmeric increases its bioavailability significantly. I also highlighted its neuroprotective effects, particularly against age-related diseases like dementia. Next, we talked about cinnamon, which is excellent for blood sugar regulation and lipid metabolism. I often recommend it to my patients dealing with cholesterol issues. Ginger was another key spice, known for its ability to ease nausea and aid digestion. I shared a personal story about how ginger tea helped me during my pregnancies. Garlic was another highlight, especially for its immune-boosting properties and potential to lower blood pressure. Cumin, a staple in my New Mexican upbringing, aids in digestion and acts as an antioxidant. Paprika, rich in beta carotene, is good for vision and has anti-inflammatory effects due to capsaicin. We also covered cayenne pepper, which can boost metabolism and aid in weight regulation, and black pepper, which enhances the absorption of various nutrients. Cardamom, cloves, and saffron were also discussed for their unique health benefits, including digestive health, oral health, and mood improvement, respectively. Basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano rounded out our list, each offering their own set of health benefits from anti-inflammatory properties to cognitive support and antimicrobial effects. I encouraged listeners to spice up their meals to not only enhance flavor but also to reap these health benefits.
