He has a wide variety of musical tastes and loves Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Diamond, Led Zeppelin, and Latin style percussion. His other drumming influences include John Bonham, Ian Paice, Jeff Porcaro, David Garibaldi, and Steve Gadd. Troy grew up in the east San Francisco bay area playing in bands such as Whisper, Benny and the Jets, 415, and the Eric Martin Band before joining Tesla in 1985.In 2010, Troy participated in a tribute album titled Mister Bolin's Late Night Revival, a compilation of 17 previously unreleased tracks written by guitar legend Tommy Bolin prior to his death in 1976. The CD includes other artists such as HiFi Superstar, Doogie White, Eric Martin, Jeff Pilson, Randy Jackson, Rachel Barton, Rex Carroll, Derek St. Holmes, Kimberley Dahme, and The 77's. We often define life by the things we have. Boxcar Junkies lead vocalist and principle songwriter Brandon Reid Allen defines his by the things he’s survived. He was born in Indiana but his nomadic ways often led him astray. With extreme hearing loss as a child and subject to a tougher start than most, Allen wasn’t exactly someone you’d expect to catapult to a career as a singer-songwriter. But one thing his parents gave him before leaving this world was his first start in music through their family band. Allen started playing drums and bass until receiving his first acoustic guitar at age 12. That’s when the writing started. That’s when he first found his voice. Allen launched a successful career as a singer-songwriter. He won Best Rock Vocalist at the Los Angeles Music Awards as well as Songwriter of the Year. Not long after, he added Breakout Artist of the Year at the American Christian Music Awards, as well as Song of the Year at the Paramount Music Awards. He signed a label deal with distribution and publishing through EMI, creating quite a buzz as an independent musician. Allen soon would catch the ear of famed rock drummer Troy Luccketta of the multi-platinum selling band Tesla. “Troy has been instrumental in my career. He opened a lot of doors. He believed in me and gave me opportunities recording great music and sharing the stage with legends. The Eagles, Alice Cooper, Aaron Lewis. The list goes on.” Things looked promising on multiple fronts, but personal tragedy would come calling. “I made some stupid choices that led to my exodus. Drifting from town to town. Living on the streets, in the mountains, even the desert. Lost myself for sure. It wasn’t the first time. Hell, I ran away with the carnival when I was just a kid. I’ve surely lived a hundred lifetimes.” He’d lose a lot of things along the way before truly finding himself. One thing after another unraveled until he found himself living on the streets. “It’s not that I got addicted to drugs and booze and then lost everything. It was actually the exact opposite. I’m no stranger to life and its struggles, but the harder I would fight off the attack, the stronger it became. It was too much this time. I had lost. I finally said ‘I’m dead already, just waiting for my body to catch up.’” He scraped by busking and sleeping on rooftops in cities like Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego. Eventually he found himself. Cleaned up and clawed out. Dedicating his life and his art to being someone who tells the stories of the forgotten people he’d met along the way. He traveled, playing gigs and being free. New York to Florida to Texas (where he cut the EP for his new Americana/Alt-Country project Boxcar Junkies), and finally back to Nashville. Drawing from influences like Mellencamp, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Rob Thomas, and Wilco, Allen’s Boxcar Junkies put their own spin on a style of music deeply embedded in the American experience. A punchy rhythm section forms the backdrop for deep textured guitars, rootsy Hammond organ, all set against organic overlays of steel guitar and harmonica. The record was produced and performed on by producer Derek Hames and engineer John Shelton of Houston’s Edgewater Music Group. Isaias Gil (Black Flag, Macy Gray, David Lee Roth, Jaci Velasquez) played drums alongside bassist Mark Riddell (Mike Stinson, Charlie and The Regrets, Leon III, Grand Old Grizzly). International guitar legend Gary Hoey guested on the record, while Texas steel extraordinaire Will Van Horn (Lyle Lovett, Robert Ellis) and Houston harmonica great Sonny Boy Terry added their unique flavors as well. Hames provided Hammond, mandolin, guitars, percussion, and background vocals while Shelton played most of the leads. Sony Music Entertainment’s group – The Orchard has picked up the band for distribution of the EP, titled “EST. 1973.” Ultimately, though, the record is focused in on the incisive, plaintive songwriting and smoky baritone vocals Allen himself provides the project. The tapestries of the backing tracks are pleasing, but the music itself is what drives the ship. “I’m trying to make right with my past and help some people along the way that have been pinned down by their circumstances. My hope is that I become invisible and that people focus on the message.” Shining a light into dark places. Music is the medium. Hope is the message.

Guests Alex Shumaker & Ami Dolenz on the Melissa Billie Clark Show Ami Dolenz: Ami was born January 8, 1969 at 7:05 am, in Burbank California. Her parents brought her home the next day. Micky's mother, Janelle Scott, was there to help the new parents. In 1980, Ami, her mother and grandmother moved back to their townhouse. Ami attended a private school nearby, and made lots of friends, many of them remain her friends today. Her parents arranged for Ami to talk about acting with a friend of theirs, who was in the business. The friend spent two hours with Ami, talking to her about how difficult it is to get an agent, how hard it is just to get an appointment, and how many she would have to see, with no guarantee she would be signed-up by anyone. Ami left with a list of agents to contact. She was also a co-star in many other films, including: “Can't buy me love”, “Faith”, Rescue Me”, and several horror films, such as: “Children of the night”, Ticks”, Witchboard II”, and Pumpkinhead II”. On the lighter side, is “Stepmonster”, a very cute movie about a kid that is sure his stepmother is a monster. “Miracle Beach” is the movie most often mentioned by her fans as their favorite. She still has the genie costume from the movie. Alex Shumaker: Alex Shumaker was born May 16, 2006, he resides in Punxsutawney, PA. Alex was interested in Classic Rock bands such as Journey, Foreigner, Reo Speed Wagon and Styx since age 4. While most 5 years were headed to the Toy section at Walmart Alex would ask to go to “look” at the CD's. On February 10, 2012 while browsing the CD's Alex found a DVD of the band Journey with their new lead singer Arnel. Alex became fixated on drummer Deen Castronovo, he went and got an exercise ball and put it in front of the TV and grabbed some kitchen utensils for his make shift drum set. He watched the video over and over again and broke every kitchen utensil his parents had so when his dad came home from work he cut a pair of plastic coat hangers for him to use. That evening Alex's mom posted a picture of his drum “kit” on Facebook with the heading “you gotta do what you gotta do when your parents won't buy you a drum set!” The phone soon rang and it was Alex's Nana wanting to speak with him. His parents weren't all that thrilled when he started screaming “Nana and Papa are buying me a real drum set on Saturday”. Alex received that little drum kit and played it for hours on end, at least 3-4 hours a day watching the Journey DVD over and over trying copy Deen's every move. Every time Alex went to Walmart he got a CD. One day another DVD appeared, this time it was the band Foreigner with then drummer Brian Tichy. Alex became obsessed with Tichy's theatrics of stick throwing/bouncing. After a few months of playing Alex's parents enrolled him in drum lessons once a week with teacher Brian Rowan with whom he is still under the instruction of. To date along with Castronovo and Tichy the most influential drummers for Alex have been: Todd Sucherman of Styx, Brian Hitt of Reo Speedwagon, Chris Fraizer of Foreigner, Peter Criss of Kiss, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Neil Peart of Rush, Sean Fuller of Florida Georgia Line and Rich Redmond of Jason Aldean, Lucky Lerner of the Circle Jerks, Glen Sobel of Alice Cooper, and Troy Luccketta of Tesla to mention a few. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/melissabillieclark/support

Episode Description: Steven speaks with Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon about some of his earliest musical memories and the band's newest album release "Shock." We go album-by-album to discuss what Frank's thoughts were at the time of recording. Because we are such huge Tesla fans, as an added bonus we thought why not throw in our top 5 Tesla tunes to rock along the way. What's The Story: Tesla is an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California in late 1981 by bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Frank Hannon as Earthshaker, and later City Kidd. Lead vocalist Jeff Keith, drummer Troy Luccketta, and guitarist Tommy Skeoch joined them by 1984. By 1986, the band had changed from its glam-derived sound to a 'rootsier' direction under a new name: "Tesla." The band disbanded in 1996 with members devoting themselves to solo projects before re-forming in 2000. Tommy Skeoch departed the band in 2006 and was replaced by Dave Rude. Tesla have sold 14 million albums in the United States. I heard the first single "Modern Day Cowboy from the band's debut album upon its release and was hooked. When I saw the band in a small club in Atlanta on that very first tour for the debut album, I loved everything about the bands no-frills approach to rock n roll and I never looked back. Over the years, I have seen the band countless times and purchased all the band's releases of original material. This band is rock n roll done right; from its heavy driven rockers to its meaningful ballads. Love This Band!! This week Tesla's Troy Luccketta joins us to discuss the making of Mechanical Resonance. Released in December of 1986, Mechanical Resonance introduced this Sacramento-based 5 piece to the world. Produced by the duo of Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, the album peaked at 32 on the Billboard charts. Additionally, it provided Tesla with some bonafide material that still gets played live today including Modern Day Cowboy, Cumin' Atcha Live, and Little Suzi. Mechanical Resonance In this long-form discussion, Troy shares the origin story of Tesla. Details covered include the name change from City Kidd, marathon writing sessions, who's responsible for the name Tesla, and much more! As always, we also go track by track with Troy to get recollections of the making of each song. 2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Tesla. While Troy provides lots of great stories of the making of Mechanical Resonance, he also fills us in on the current state of the band. The new album, Shock, is slated for release in March of 2019. In 1990, Tesla was on the rise as a band, having released two albums and a couple of really cool hits, “Love Song” and “Modern Day Cowboy.” They were very hot on the touring trail, putting on concerts with so much energy and vitality it was knocking fans back in their seats. Tesla stayed grounded and the musicianship was excellent. So it was no wonder that by the end of 1990, they would find themselves shooting towards the top of the music and MTV charts with an acoustic version of an old Five Man Electrical Band song called “Signs.” It was proof that Tesla's magic lay in being a live band, where they still shine brightest twenty-six years later. Opening the current Def Leppard tour, Tesla are still earning respect the old fashioned way: with good songs and rock and roll rooted in the blues vs glam. Having that strong rooted base, they have been able to stand up to the test of time, even though they took a break as a band for several years, and as of 2016 are working on new music with Leppard's Phil Collen aboard as producer. “We've done one song already and we're actually doing it in segments,” Collen told Songfacts earlier this year. “When we've got some good songs, we'll record them, and we've got a few on the go already.” Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta reiterated to me that everything was sounding great so far. Luccketta, who was born and raised in northern California, has been with the band since the beginning so he's seen the highs, the lows, the struggles and the achievements. “I feel blessed to be thirty years into it and still have a job that I absolutely love,” #slackermorningshow101thefox
