Paul Lisicky remembers when he first heard Joni Mitchell on the radio, and when he found one of her records in a bin at Korvettes. He was inspired by her musicality, her poetry, and her willingness to defy musical conventions. Nearly every one of her songs spoke to him in some way. As a budding songwriter whose music was widely performed in churches around the country, he was motivated by her superb tunings, phrasing, and melodies. Later, he focused more on lyrics and prose, hers and his own, eventually earning a master's in creative fiction and working in the world of professional writing. He continued to follow Joni's career and never got tired of her music, which helped him navigate the ups and downs of his life. Song So Wild and Blue: A Life with the Music of Joni Mitchell (HarperOne, 2025) is a beautiful memoir about the struggle of a gay writer intertwined with the life and career of the magnificent Joni Mitchell. Paul Lisicky grew up in southern New Jersey but has lived most of his adult life in Massachusetts and New York City. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Rutgers University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop (1990). He authored seven books, including Song So Wild and Blue: A Life with the Music of Joni Mitchell, The Burning House, Famous Builder, Later, The Narrow Door, and Lawn Boy. Last fall, the American Library Association compiled a list of books that have been targets of censorship, challenged for inclusion in the collections of school and public libraries. 1,269 books were challenged in 2022. Jolie McShane and Jeff McDonald are two of the activists seeking to ban books about sexuality and LGTBQ communities in Baltimore County school libraries. That's almost double the number of books that were challenged the year before. Most of the books are about LGBTQ communities, or are stories and histories centered around people of color. Republican Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has made “anti-wokism” a central tenet of his campaign for President, and a central issue in his on-going feud with Disney. Around the country, conservative activists are seeking to limit what kids can access in their classrooms and curriculums. Today on Midday, a conversation about what criteria teachers, parents, politicians and boards of education are applying in the contentious fights around book censorship. Tom first speaks to Deborah Caldwell-Stone, the Director of the Office of Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association. A little later in the program, Tom speaks with Jolie McShane, the President of Republican Women of Baltimore County and Jeffry McDonald, the President of the Patriot Club of America, a group based in Baltimore County. They have been working to have two books removed from Baltimore County school libraries, “Lawn Boy” by Jonathan Evison and “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe. Tom also speaks with George Johnson, the author of “All Boys Aren't Blue,” another book that is among the most frequently targeted for removal from libraries across the country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we're celebrating libraries! Not only do librarians help kids (and adults) find the books they need, libraries are a vital “third space” in our communities. They provide resources and information, they promote inclusivity, and they're a place where we can spend time with one another. Our hosts are joined by Carrie Wardzinski, a librarian and mom in Pennsylvania, who shares why she was drawn to the profession and what we can do to support our local libraries. After that, Jasmine gets the chance to sit down with amazing best-selling author Jodi Picoult. Many of Jodi's books are facing bans around the country, so she and Jasmine chat about why book bans are so dangerous and what's really behind them. Jodi also shares where she gets the ideas for her novels and why she thinks fiction is such a valuable way to tackle big issues like abortion, school shootings, and trans rights. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to powerful stories, family hikes, and new experiences in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Speaking of banned books, next month's Banned Book Club is all about Jonathan Evison's book Lawn Boy - one of the most commonly banned books in the country. If you're like us, it's been almost 40 years since you were a middle schooler and lots has changed for kids and the librarians who help them, such as the use of Chromebooks in classes and the current prevalence of book bans. This week we chat with Kelsey Madges, an Ohio middle school librarian and book lover. We talk about the highs and the lows of working in school libraries. If you're like us, it's been almost 40 years since you were a middle schooler and lots has changed for kids and the librarians who help them, such as the use of Chromebooks in classes and the current prevalence of book bans. Today my guest is NYT best selling author Jonathon Evison. His latest release, Small World, is a sweeping epic of the American experience. (Yes, have read it, and yes, it is really good. No, I didn't come up with the term “sweeping epic – that was someone much smarter than me.)  He also wrote the book “The Fundamentals of Caregiving” which became a movie currently available on Netflix. It is based on his time as a caregiver for a young man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and stars Paul Rudd. It is funny, hopeful and honest. He also currently has the number 2 book on the banned book request list in “Lawn Boy.” This was his first work that I read and loved it. Let's see what we can do to move it to number one! The idea that we are still trying to ban books in 2022 makes me sad.  Folks, I want to apologize to you and Jonathon. People do so many of these press junkets and interviews, they have to get tired of doing these things. Here at Tony on the Mic, I want to tell the story, but more, just give people a chance to tell their story while being themselves. Talk about things they like and appreciate. This episode reminded me of that mission as we talked books, inspiration, process, etc for the first half, but he became energized towards the end when we started talking sports, music and kids! Lord knows I would rather talk kids and sports etc, so from now on there will be more of that! It also could have been partly to recording at 7:30 AM or some crazy early time. We make a future bet about how the Seattle Seahawks will do this year, I recorded it to have a record of it, if I lose, I have a feeling the evidence will be destroyed.

We also talk through a moment that went viral on social media, when Alicia brought explicit books to the attention of our school board. These books, including Gender Queer and Lawn Boy, depict graphic sexual content both in words and pictures. There'll be much mistletoeing, And hearts will be glowing, And podcast hosts will be all-knowing. That's right, America, it's the most wonderful time of the year and editor in chief Neal Pollack's got you covered. The world's best writers on books, film and quality tv have weighed in with their best of 2021 lists. In condensed episode #035 of the Book and Film Globe podcast, Neal starts the conversation with Sharyn Vane, who covered “The Year in Censorship” for the site. Sadly, there was an abundance of source material here, with a slew of books facing the wrath of the closed-minded—up a discouraging 60 percent in just a year.Early in 2021, according to Vane, the estate of Dr. Seuss revealed early this year that “it would no longer publish six of the legendary children's author's early books because they contained ‘hurtful and wrong' content.' By Fall, challenges were mounted against Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give, Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak and Alex Gino's Melissa (formerly George), Ashley Hope Pérez's Out of Darkness, Jonathan Evison's Lawn Boy, Maia Kobabe's Gender Queer, and George M. Johnson's All Boys Aren't Blue. Then BFG pod regular Stephen Garrett joins Neal to discuss a movie that seems to have gone entirely off the rails. Garrett reveals why he awarded The Matrix: Resurrections' a paltry one-star review. He cites not just the unforgivable absence of Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) Hugo Weaving (nefarious A.I. program Agent Smith) but also the alarming number of predictable cliches: “Among the film's exhausting cinematic callbacks: our heroes will run up the walls while shooting guns, unloading bucketloads of ammo. Most of the villains will have bad aim, and [director Lana] Wachowski will use slo-mo with impunity.”

Keri and Carter are joined by special guest Ellen, a former teacher and concerned parent who has been fighting against pornographic material ushered into her local public school system under the guise of pro-LGBTQ literature. She calls out graphic drawings in Maia Kobabe's "Gender Queer: A Memoir," and sexually explicit depictions in over twenty other school library books, including Jonathan Evison's "Lawn Boy" and "All Boys Aren't Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto" by George M. Johnson. The trio discuss the gradual change in the public school system from decentralized schools to a standardized, centrally-controlled system with decreasing autonomy for local educators. Ellen observes that the Discovery Education Company, allegedly responsible for curriculum and library management in over 1/2 of US schools reaching over 51 million students, is owned by leftist San Francisco private equity firm Francisco Partners, which also owns companies directly promoting Critical Race Theory. While Carter argues that parents should not outsource moral development of their children and that ethical frameworks are impossible to completely remove from education, Ellen recalls a time when teachers strove to hide their political opinions from students. Both agreed that homeschooling or private schooling are excellent options for concerned parents. Before departing, Ellen explains how parents can get involved in their local public school districts as well. Carter and Keri remain to answer some superchats before taking a few moments to laugh at an awkward Tweet from David Gins, Kamala Harris' Deputy Director of Operations. They discuss Mayor de Blasio's new COVID vaccine mandates for all private sector workers and even children as young as 5. Carter calls COVID-19 a "litmus test for neuroticism," which prompts Keri to share some photos of mothers celebrating vaccination of their young children. Northern Virginia continues to be a battleground between school boards and parents over what should be taught in public schools. The latest incident involves a series of books in Fairfax Public School libraries containing graphic depictions of sex between children and adults.Stacy Langton, a mom from Fairfax County, Virginia, made headlines after she read aloud and showed images from those books, “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe and “Lawn Boy” by Jonathan Evison, during a School Board meeting. While the books have been temporarily removed from the Fairfax County Public School libraries, Langton is still concerned that a child will be permanently affected by the obscene pictures."You're going to accidentally have your child stumble across this and open up. And once you see this, you can't unsee these images," she says.Langton joins "The Daily Signal Podcast” to talk about that School Board meeting, and the larger issue of such books being in public school libraries in the first place. We also cover these stories:Sen. McAuliffe vetoed a law that would have allowed parents to block their children's exposure to sexually explicit books in schools. Such as illustrations of oral sex and masturbation and Evision's allegedly shows graphic descriptions of a man having sex with children.   Terry McAuliffe: ‘I Don't Think Parents Should Be Telling Schools What They Should Teach' NICOLE SILVERIO CONTRIBUTOR September 28, 202111:59 PM ET     Democratic Virginia Gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe said parents should not have authority over what schools teach their children during a debate Tuesday evening. McAuliffe was challenged on his change in stance, as he previously advocated for protection for transgender students and now supports allowing local school districts to make independent decisions about controversial issues. His opponent, Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin, argued during the debate that local school districts should include parents in decisions regarding the educational content taught to their children. “In regard to our kids in schools, we are called for everyone to love everyone,” Youngkin said. “And I agree with your conclusion, Terry [McAuliffe], that we should let local school districts actually make these decisions. But we must ask them to include concepts of safety and privacy and respect in the discussion and we must ask that they include parents in the dialogue.” “I'm not gonna let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decisions,” McAuliffe replied. “I stopped the bill that I don't think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” He explained that he supports parents having the right to veto books rather than make decisions for the schools on which books are placed in school libraries.         McAuliffe vetoed a bill, known as the “Beloved” bill in 2016 that would have allowed parents to block their childrens' exposure to sexually explicit books in schools, the Washington Post previously reported. The legislation would have required teachers to inform parents of any “sexually explicit material” being presented in the classroom and give them the option to have their child opt out of the lesson. (RELATED: As Virginia Governor Race Draws To A Close, McAuliffe Will Not Name One Abortion Restriction He Supports)  Youngkin criticized McAuliffe's veto of the bill during his time as governor, arguing that “parents should be in charge of their kid's education.” The Republican candidate mentioned parents' uproar this past week over Fairfax County High School allegedly presenting “sexually explicit” material in the library without parental consent. The school system removed the books “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe and “Lawn Boy” by Jonathon Evison from the high school library Friday, according to WTOP News. Kobabe's book reportedly contains illustrations of oral sex and masturbation and Evision's allegedly shows graphic descriptions of a man having sex with children. The school board held a meeting Thursday evening during which parents challenged school administrators regarding their children's accessibility to the books, according to the outlet.     Tags : education gubernatorial race sexually explicit book terry mcauliffe

My guest today is Jonathon Evison, New York Times best selling author. Adult content, lots of candor and I stopped beeping about 1/3 of the way through… Jonathon wrote All about Lulu and Lawn Boy, both of which I read and recommend, and he just released Legends of the North Cascades, which I have bought, but not read yet, its on the list! He has another half dozen books and his latest, small world, is due out next year. We talk about his process and inspirations, generational parenting and do a deep dive into Seattle Music and some Seattle sports. He sings his rejected original jingle for the Seattle chamber of commerce. He once kicked someone out of his band, who later help form, and is still a member of Pearl Jam… I guess it worked out for both of them. A little "adult" language, and less than perfect sound due to the zoom - but a fun, nonstop ride!

They emerged from the heap of ashy skin, that imperfect leather. The engine room 'green' would flake 'off the wall', chips of paint laying on top bedsheets next to crumbs of spicy tomato flavored potato crackers; he promised to 'work day and night' to restore the shells of those walls. Road no. 19 housed their family heirloom, ounish number was torn down before he could make good on his promise. Choudhurani had high expectations for her lot. He couldn't make good on a promise to himself, to be in the company of Choudhurani's expectations was too daunting of a demand for him to address. Education was a requisite to meet those expectations, she would remind him of her demands with the word 'certificate'. A child born to sponge the arts, he soaked up hip hop, consumed it, imbibed the culture, went to Sister Clara Muhammad's, thought of himself as Detroit Red, in a room of one he was a certified G. When G-Granny, Badrunessa asked for updates regarding his 'certificate' he was diminished to an O, a zero in bangla we called that goal. We've all got goals, but to be one, that ain't the movement. Stillborn aspirations kill bravado. Open rooftops under the shade of coconut leaves that's God's sovereignty. God's people the poor, were under Badrunessa's care; they would clamor at the gates of ounish no. with tin vessels, and torn sari's outstretched in the hopes of receiving blessings. Blessings manifested themselves as staples, rice and such. He was dispatched as Badrunessa's emissary, employed with the distribution of those staples. She would guide him, "pour the grains in 'gently', give them some 'taka'(cash) be discreet, they may be in need, but you need to give them respect."She was grooming him, for what? Plants. Every day we're surrounded by them. Under our feet, towering above our heads, living side by side with us in our own homes. We buy fertilizer and sprinkler systems to help them grow and then when they grow we cut them down with garden shears, lawn mowers and chainsaws. We yank them out of the ground and throw them in boiling water or just devour them on the spot. But did you ever stop to wonder what THEY think about how we treat them? Do they know you and your intentions towards them before you even open the garden shed to grab the pruning shears? Tonight we discuss "The Secret Life of Plants" by Peter Tomkins and Christopher Bird and I guarantee you will be nothing short of amazed at the research they discovered. OK, so maybe "No Mow" is a seedy fiction, but there ARE alternatives to conventional turf that can save water and work, turn down the Lawn Boy's carbon emissions - even support the lives of pollinators. All while keeping that sweet green place to play for our kids and dogs. Today's needs have evolved, somewhat, from the country's original No Mow situation:               Neil Diboll, president of Prairie Nursery in Westfield, Wisconsin, returns to Earthworms to elucidate the what-why-how of Lawn Alternatives. His No Mow Lawn Mix is proving popular in central Wisconsin's sandy, loamy soil. And his youth in University City, MO, gave Neil a healthy appreciation for our heat-loving Zoyzia grass. Of course he encourages transformation of areas in your turf into flowering prairie-like pollinator islands. Move over, John Deere - there are turf alternatives here!                              Could a local, creative plantsman develop a "No Mow" mix for our St. Louis area's hot summers and clay soils? Working with nature, the grass COULD be Greener! Music: Magic 9, performed live at KDHX by Infamous Stringdusters THANKS to Cody Pees, Earthworms engineer and discerning listener Related Earthworms Conversations: Growing a Joint Venture with Nature (February, 2017)

Well, night 4 was certainly jam-filled. This was a show for the ages. We're joined by Chris and Shawn to break this down. Chris played an integral role in the "Wilson" NFL Films piece, and Shawn has created the "Bakers Beat" for this run. We appreciate their contributions! We play some of the Lawn Boy and some of the Crosseyed & Painless. Wow. We also feature two submissions we got last night from Seth and George. Keep them coming! Record your (

Amber and Lawn Boy have been engaged for a bit.  On this week's podcast we all sit down and talk about the engagement "fun" from her point of view and his point of view.  It can be a vastly different points of view.  We play the Newly Engaged Game.  Are they on the same page or will they walk away from this podcast in need of pre-marriage counseling?   Leave it to Amber to take the podcast into the NSFW arena and this time it's a twist and turn that Lawn Boy was shocked by.    Thank you and cheers!!
