Interview by Kris PetersHillbilly Vegas' dynamic sound caught the ears of an independent label in Nashville in 2011, and their first album Ringo Manor was released and sold more than 10,000 copies – driven by the hit single Little Miss Rough and Tumble. The band has gone onto chart five songs on Billboard's Rock charts, including Let It Ride – which remained on the chart for 13 weeks and reached #10, Feels Good, High Time For A Good Time, Hell To Pay, Two GunTown, and fan favorite Shake It Like A Hillbilly. The band has earned a reputation for rousing live shows-bringing a loud, party-like atmosphere that is all-inclusive.They've shown they have a broad appeal across different genres, pleasing crowds while performing shows with rockers Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wolfsbane and Ted Nugent; along with country icons Alabama, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, and Wynonna Judd. Hillbilly Vegas has played before huge crowds at NASCA Revents, as well as many major bike rallies, including the legendary annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally. They have a strong UK following, and have played the Maid of Stone and Steelhouse festivals. Now, Hillbilly Vegas are set to raise the stakes even higher with the release of their new album A La Mode, slated for release this Friday, May 8. With everything you love about Hillbilly Vegas and fresh characteristics that expand their sound even further, A La Mode epitomises the rock and roll spirit unlike anything you have heard in recent memory.HEAVY sat down with vocalist and original member Steve Harris to find out more, starting by asking how he is feeling about the release."We feel good about it," he enthused. "We like what we've done. The name A La Mode is a silly name, but it's a fun name. We hope that everybody enjoys it as much as we enjoyed doing it."We ask Steve to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, I wish I could say there's a bunch of deep meaning in it," he smiled, "but we just write songs and when I hear the music that the guys start writing, I just... Sometimes it tells a story, sometimes it paints a picture, and then I start writing from there. I do a lot of observational stuff, and people I know are just things I've seen, and there's a lot of things on there. There's a good story in every song, even the silly ones, and we hope everybody finds their story in our story."In the full interview we covered Hillbilly Vegas' new album A La Mode, its musical character, notable collaborations, and upcoming touring plans. Steve introduced the band lineup and described the record as a mix of ballads, heavy rockers, country, and boogie-woogie, explaining the title reflects the idea that “everything's better with ice cream” rather than any title track. He also highlighted the single Mr. Midnight, noting Paul Rodgers contributed vocals, appears in the song and video, and was praised as a defining rock voice and a generous collaborator. The conversation then reviewed the band's origins and early Nashville experience, with Steve saying the Nashville songwriting-factory environment conflicted with their broader rock-and-roll approach. He recounted how their first radio play led to a Nashville record deal. Steve also announced a U.S. summer tour planned for June–August, the band's first U.S. tour in three years, and noted several of their top streaming cities are in Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Free & Bad Company's Simon Kirke: His Rock 'n Roll Story

Today's guest is a true rock icon. Simon Kirke is the powerhouse drummer and co-founder of two of the most influential bands in classic rock history—Free and Bad Company. From the raw, blues-driven energy of Free to the arena-filling success of Bad Company, Simon has lived a life that most musicians only dream about. And as you're about to hear, it all began with a simple toss of a coin.In this warm and revealing conversation, Simon takes us right back to his early days in London, chasing a dream against the odds. With a two-year ultimatum from his parents to make it as a drummer or go to university, Simon spent months doing odd jobs—until fate intervened. A chance decision led him to audition alongside the extraordinary guitarist Paul Kossoff—a meeting that would change everything.Together with Kossoff, singer Paul Rodgers and bassist Andy Fraser, Simon formed Free—a band that would go on to define an era. But success didn't come overnight. The group toured relentlessly, playing hundreds of gigs across the UK and Europe, honing their sound and building a loyal following before finally breaking through with the global smash hit All Right Now.Simon shares the fascinating story behind that song—born out of a disappointing gig and a desire to create something audiences could truly connect with. The result? One of the most enduring rock anthems of all time. But with success came pressure.Still in their teens, the members of Free suddenly found themselves catapulted onto the world stage. The demands of touring, the expectation to deliver another hit, and growing creative differences all took their toll. Simon speaks candidly about the band's struggles, the difficulty of following up such a massive success, and the heartbreaking impact of addiction on Paul Kossoff—casting a long shadow over the band's future. It's an honest and deeply human account of what happens when young musicians achieve fame before they're ready for it.Out of those challenges, however, came a new chapter.Simon and Paul Rodgers regrouped to form Bad Company, alongside guitarist Mick Ralphs and bassist Boz Burrell. This time, with stronger management and greater experience, the band hit the ground running—becoming the first act signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and going on to achieve massive global success.Simon reflects on why Bad Company worked where Free struggled—crediting maturity, better support, and a deeper understanding of the music business.Beyond the bands, Simon opens up about his evolution as a songwriter, his solo work, and his ongoing commitment to helping others through addiction recovery. It's a powerful reminder that even the biggest rock stars face very real challenges—and that resilience is often the key to longevity. This is a story of luck, talent, triumph, and loss… and ultimately, survival.Simon Kirke—drummer and co-founder of Free and Bad Company—joins Sandy Kaye to share the incredible story behind his legendary career. From the formation of Free and the global success of All Right Now, to the pressures of sudden fame and the band's heartbreaking breakup, Simon opens up about the highs and lows of life in one of rock's most influential bands. He also reveals how Bad Company was born, why it succeeded where Free struggled, and what it was like becoming one of the first acts signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label. This is a fascinating, honest and deeply personal conversation about rock history, resilience, and the reality behind the music.

Exclusively Van Halen: Michael Anthony Says Make New #VanHalen Album Instrumental?

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we dive into a major development surrounding a possible new Van Halen album — and now Michael Anthony has weighed in. After Alex Van Halen surprised fans by announcing he was working with Steve Lukather on unreleased Van Halen material, speculation has been swirling. Although Lukather initially insisted he'd never “play a guitar note on a VH song,” it was later confirmed the two are indeed collaborating on archival Van Halen demos recorded before Eddie Van Halen passed away. According to Alex, the band had nearly completed an album before Eddie's death. Lukather's role? Helping assemble and finish the material. At one point, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company was even approached to handle vocals — but Rodgers declined, saying he's currently in an “acoustic, zen phase” of life. Now Michael Anthony has shared his perspective — and it's a powerful one. Speaking to WNCX (via Ultimate Classic Rock), Anthony suggested the most fitting tribute would be to finish the project as a fully instrumental record — a pure nod to Eddie's genius. In his view, bringing in a new singer would shift the focus away from what truly matters: the unreleased guitar work Eddie left behind. Anthony believes the spotlight should remain squarely on Eddie's playing — not on launching a new era or reinventing the band. There's still no official release date, but Alex and Lukather are reportedly continuing work on the material. In 2024, Alex released “Unfinished,” the final piece he worked on with his brother — and now fans are waiting to see what comes next. Stay tuned. "Exclusively Van Halen" is your ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. From deep dives into the band's legendary history to giveaways and gear showcases, we celebrate one of the greatest rock bands of all time — every week.

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we dive into HUGE news: Alex Van Halen has officially confirmed that work is underway on a brand-new album built from unheard Eddie Van Halen material—for the first time ever. Alex revealed in a recent interview that he's been teaming up with Steve Lukather to help bring these recordings to life. These aren't scraps or demos either—this is music that was intended to become the next Van Halen album before Eddie's passing. The foundation is already there, with drums, guitars, and bass recorded—bass handled by Wolfgang Van Halen. But don't expect a quick release. Alex says nothing will come out unless it meets the same high standard the band always demanded. They're carefully shaping the material into something worthy of the Van Halen legacy—no unfinished sketches, only top-tier music. The big missing piece? A vocalist. Paul Rodgers was considered but declined due to health and touring. Alex says he and Lukather are searching for the right voice—someone from the same musical era who understands the spirit of the band. He even mentioned Robert Plant as a dream fit, though nothing is set in stone. Notably, past Van Halen singers David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, and Gary Cherone were not discussed. Alex's goal? To finish what they started and deliver something powerful, emotional, and worthy of the band's history. If this project comes together, it could be one of the most important rock releases in years. #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen #AlexVanHalen #JohnnyBeaneTV #ExclusivelyVanHalen

After their debut album, The Firm, hit gold in the US in 1985, fans figured that Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers would tour to support it and not only play songs off the album but also include hits from their back catalogs. While expecting reworked Led Zeppelin and Bad Company songs, they instead got songs from Paul Rodgers 1983 solo album Cut Loose and Jimmy's Death Wish II soundtrack. Then, Jimmy's performance with his old LZ bandmates at Live Aid was considered an outright disaster. Everyone figured the 2nd Firm album would be Jimmy finally putting on his old Guitar God robes and delivering what they'd been waiting for. Unfortunately, Mean Business never really lived up to the fans expectations and though there were a few flashes, the guitar heroics were missing. Despite the extraordinary work of bassist Tony Franklin, whose writing contribution Dreaming is a standout on the album, it was as if Jimmy was just going through the motions. Though Paul's voice is as strong and rich as ever, most of the lyrics weren't very deep or super relatable. The steady hand of UAWIL guest Chris Slade on the drums gave everyone the space to do what they wanted but for Jimmy, it wasn't inspiring. You saw glimpses in the solo on Live in Peace and on a couple of others but if you were waiting for Jimmy to cut loose, well it never really happened. There are highlights like All The Kings Horses which hit #1 on the US rock charts for 4 weeks in early 1986 and the closer Spirit of Love lets everyone do their thing. Fortune Hunter is rifftastic in getting the album going but there's a slow down around 3:30 that kills the momentum. UAWIL #270: The Firm - Mean Business

The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast

Cadillac is so long and murky that it's almost unlistenable - why did they choose that as the second song? Eventually, all involved went on to do other things as members of supergroups always do. We're simply having a wonderful holiday special, and you're invited.   While music fans may be divided about the merits of Paul McCartney's enduring holiday offering "Wonderful Christmastime," it's hard to deny that the Holidays are always packed with new releases from both of his legendary bands. 2025 brought us both the latest installment in The Beatles Anthology albums (and the updated streaming series), plus two projects that shine a spotlight on Macca's other band, Wings.   One was a new triple LP compilation, WINGS: The Definitive Self-Titled Collection, and the other is a book, the oral history Wings: The Story Of A Band On The Run, written by McCartney himself, and edited by our guest today, historian Ted Widmer, who talks about the process of working with McCartney and what he learned about the story of the ex-Beatle's overachieving second act.   And McCartney's current long-serving guitarist/bassist Brian Ray just got back from the band's worldwide Got Back Tour, and is here to share some of his insights about bringing the McCartney catalogue to life, Every Night. He also talks about some of his solo projects, including the recent RSD Black Friday double LP, Rock The Plaza, where Ray worked alongside legends like Paul Rodgers, Josh Homme, Alice Cooper, and Orianthi.    The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. And next May launching his acoustic ‘Songs & Stories Tour' in theatres, intercut with film clips and hoary old tales from the battlefield. He looks back here at … … Smash Hits cover shoots and Rewind package tours: “what a glorious time the ‘80s was” … the soul phrases he stole from Free and his impression of “the Paul Rodgers moan” … discovering James Taylor, the Doors, Gregg Allman, Vinegar Joe and Van Morrison … supporting Bob Marley when the crowd threw a dead duck at Joe Jackson – “and hit him!” … Mike & Bernie Winters in panto - “I was rolling in the aisles” … playing Led Zeppelin, Cream and Patto and the Bill Withers and Albert King covers that launched him as a singer … memories of Live Aid – “I wish I'd thought about it more” … “What am I, a performing monkey?” … when Midge Ure told him the opening line of Band Aid had actually been a secret audition – “Simon, Tony Hadley or me” … the “deafening” Slade at Luton Tech, the night the DJ played Black JuJu by Alice Cooper … the over-cranked news story that he'd lost his voice … and the night the Mafia came to Rhode Island. ROB & JEREMY interview CHRIS SLADE Chris Slade had an incredible career in music spanning 6 decades! Chris is from Wales and grew up 6 miles from where Tom Jones grew up.  So it only was right that Chris became Tom Jones drummer (Chris was on Tom's first 6 albums including LIve in Vegas) Chris went on to form Manfred Mann's Earth Band (Blinded by the Light) ... was asked to join a new supergroup THE FIRM (in the 80s with Jimmy Page & Paul Rodgers), was in ASIA, URIAH HEEP...  ... and one of the greatest bands of all time ... AC/DC.  Chris was on their RAZOR'S EDGE album which he played drums on the legendary song Thunderstruck!  He also recorded "big gun" for the Swartzenegger movie "Last Action Hero".  He joined AC/DC on their ROCK or BUST world tour in 2015. He was in AC/DC up until 2020 when Phil Rudd rejoined. We only had about 35 minutes to talk to Chris so we couldn't cover his whole career (who could) but we got to talk drum technique, auditioning for AC/DC, being asked to join The Firm and other stuff including who makes the best tea and if Chris could go back in time where would it be and when? Also hear Chris' response when Jimmy Page told him (while recording with Tom Jones) what he was going to call his next band ... you may have heard of them? A good fun interview! What the Riff?!?
1990 - December: AC/DC “The Razors Edge”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 46:59

1990 is an odd time for a hard rock band from the late 70's to make a comeback.  Hair metal was declining rapidly, and music that would form the grunge movement was percolating up in the pacific northwest.  But that is exactly what AC/DC did with their album The Razors Edge.  The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 4 on the UK albums chart, and it would become AC/DC's third highest selling album behind “Back in Black” and “High Voltage.”After concluding their 1988 world tour the band had some changes and interruptions.  Drummer Simon Wright left the group to join Dio, and was replaced by Chris Slade who would be with the group until 1994.  Front man and songwriter Brian Johnson took some time off to finalize his divorce, which left brothers Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Angus Young (lead guitar) to write all the songs for the album.  They would continue to be the songwriters for the band through 2020.Critical reviews of the album were mixed, with negative comments revolving around the idea that this album was nothing new for the band. With the benefit of hindsight it may be that the consistency with AC/DC's previous works is actually a strength of the album.  In a period of big shifts in rock music, AC/DC provided a point of stability and a return to hard rock origins.Friend of the show Julie Doran joins us to bring us this high energy hard rock masterpiece with Rob. Are You ReadyThe anthem that leads of side 2 of the album reached number 16 on the US charts, and became the band's only number 1 hit in New Zealand.  It is used in a number of sports events and is also familiar as the official theme for WWE SmackDown on Fox.ThunderstruckThe lead off track and lead single to the album is a signature song for the band.  It started as a "little trick" Angus Young played on guitar, and Malcolm built the rhythm guitar behind that riff.  It has been performed in almost every live show the band has performed since its release. MoneytalksThis track reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first top 40 hit for AC/DC since Back in Black in 1981.  Interestingly, the song has not been performed live since the band toured The Razors Edge.   Part of the appeal of AC/DC on this album could have been the downturn in the economy at the time, striking a cord with blue collar employment struggles.  If so, money really does talk! The Razors EdgeWhile this song is the title track it was not released as a single.  This dark track talks about the fine line between success and failure, good and evil, life and death.  "You're running out of lives, and here comes the razor's edge." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Mel Torme (from the motion picture "Home Alone")This Christmas classic saw its debut from Judy Garland in the motion picture "Meet Me in St. Louis".  Mel Torme's version was used in the Christmas movie "Home Alone" which was in theaters in 1990. STAFF PICKS:Keep On Loving Me Baby by Colin JamesWayne starts out the staff picks with a Canadian blues singer-songwriter.  This cover from James' second album, Sudden Stop, is a high energy cover of a tune originally written by Otis Rush in 1958.  James benefitted from the blues revival of the time, as well as the soon-to-come swing revival in the early- to mid-90's.Chain of Fools by Little CaesarLynch brings us another cover originally performed by Aretha Franklin and written by Don Covay in 1967.  Little Caesar is a hard rock band formed in the late 80's which had a short career before problems with their label, and the eclipsing of hard rock by grunge contributed to their decline.  This cover from their debut single was their most memorableDiabolic Tastemaker by the Cherry Poppin' DaddiesBruce's staff pick is a deep cut off the Daddies' debut album "Ferociously Stoned."  This horn-heavy track first appeared on their 1989 demo tape before it was added to their album.  The band  at the time was an amalgam of punk, funk, jazz, ska, and swing at the time, thought future albums would move heavily towards swing. If You Needed Somebody by Bad Company Julie features the second single off Bad Company's ninth studio album, Holy Water.  It was their first top 40 hit since “Rock and Roll Fantasy” back in 1979.  The rock ballad hails from BadCo's days with Brian Howe as the front man, as Paul Rodgers had left the group in 1982 and was performing solo at the time.  Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction Rob finishes off the staff picks with the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual, and the biggest single, topping the Billboard Modern Rock charts for four weeks.  The dog barking is Perry Farrell's pet Annie, who was brought to the studio.  The barking was not planned, but the coincidence was included on the track. COMEDY TRACK:Do the Bartman by The SimpsonsBart Simpson closes us out this week with this lost epic.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.
