Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Back in Season 1, we talked at length about Warren Zevon, one of the great American songwriters and one of our idols.  So, this year Warren Zevon has been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, along with Bad Company and Cyndi Lauper, and we thought that was a perfect excuse to close the loop on our coverage of his career.  It's all here – his later career, final album, appearances on Letterman.  We loved doing it, and we know that you will love listening to this one! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is John Lennon's 1980 hit, “Imagine”.  As usual with Lennon's solo albums, it's more (and less) than it seems on the face of it, containing some of Lennon's best work along with some filler.  But, hey, it's a strong album and gave Roxy Music their worst-ever cover (FYI - “Jealous Guy”). We also venture into the world of ChatGPT to find out the Best Albums of 1972.  Fairly strong list – Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Lou Reed and..............................Wishbone Ash!  Who?    References – Globite Travel Bag, Warren Zevon, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “The Wind”, Zach Starkey, The Who, Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, Cyndi Lauper, Jordon Zevon, CHAT GPT, 1972, Letterman, alcoholism, Rolling Stone magazine, Jann Wenner, Zevon Live in Australia, The Bridge Hotel, St Mary's Band Club, The Hilton Sydney, Little River Band, Linda Ronstadt, pleural mesothelioma, Enjoy Every Sandwich, “Sentimental Hygiene”, Neil Young, “Detox Mansion”, “Splendid Isolation”, “Heartache Spoken Here”, “Searching For a Heart”, “The Indifference of Heaven”, Life'll Kill Ya, My Ride's Here, “Hit Somebody”, Tony Levin, “Basket Case”, Carl Hiassen, “Bad Monkey”, “The Wind”, Crystal Zevon, Springsteen, “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, Dylan, Grammy Award,  “Keep Me in Your Heart", “Enjoy Every Sandwich”, Jackson Browne, Billy Bob Thornton, David Lindley and Ry Cooder, Pixies, Jorge Calderón  Playlist – Music from the episode Enjoy every sandwich The Wind

What the Riff?!?
1990 - December: AC/DC “The Razors Edge”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2025 46:59

1990 is an odd time for a hard rock band from the late 70's to make a comeback.  Hair metal was declining rapidly, and music that would form the grunge movement was percolating up in the pacific northwest.  But that is exactly what AC/DC did with their album The Razors Edge.  The album reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 4 on the UK albums chart, and it would become AC/DC's third highest selling album behind “Back in Black” and “High Voltage.”After concluding their 1988 world tour the band had some changes and interruptions.  Drummer Simon Wright left the group to join Dio, and was replaced by Chris Slade who would be with the group until 1994.  Front man and songwriter Brian Johnson took some time off to finalize his divorce, which left brothers Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Angus Young (lead guitar) to write all the songs for the album.  They would continue to be the songwriters for the band through 2020.Critical reviews of the album were mixed, with negative comments revolving around the idea that this album was nothing new for the band. With the benefit of hindsight it may be that the consistency with AC/DC's previous works is actually a strength of the album.  In a period of big shifts in rock music, AC/DC provided a point of stability and a return to hard rock origins.Friend of the show Julie Doran joins us to bring us this high energy hard rock masterpiece with Rob. Are You ReadyThe anthem that leads of side 2 of the album reached number 16 on the US charts, and became the band's only number 1 hit in New Zealand.  It is used in a number of sports events and is also familiar as the official theme for WWE SmackDown on Fox.ThunderstruckThe lead off track and lead single to the album is a signature song for the band.  It started as a "little trick" Angus Young played on guitar, and Malcolm built the rhythm guitar behind that riff.  It has been performed in almost every live show the band has performed since its release. MoneytalksThis track reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first top 40 hit for AC/DC since Back in Black in 1981.  Interestingly, the song has not been performed live since the band toured The Razors Edge.   Part of the appeal of AC/DC on this album could have been the downturn in the economy at the time, striking a cord with blue collar employment struggles.  If so, money really does talk! The Razors EdgeWhile this song is the title track it was not released as a single.  This dark track talks about the fine line between success and failure, good and evil, life and death.  "You're running out of lives, and here comes the razor's edge." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Mel Torme (from the motion picture "Home Alone")This Christmas classic saw its debut from Judy Garland in the motion picture "Meet Me in St. Louis".  Mel Torme's version was used in the Christmas movie "Home Alone" which was in theaters in 1990. STAFF PICKS:Keep On Loving Me Baby by Colin JamesWayne starts out the staff picks with a Canadian blues singer-songwriter.  This cover from James' second album, Sudden Stop, is a high energy cover of a tune originally written by Otis Rush in 1958.  James benefitted from the blues revival of the time, as well as the soon-to-come swing revival in the early- to mid-90's.Chain of Fools by Little CaesarLynch brings us another cover originally performed by Aretha Franklin and written by Don Covay in 1967.  Little Caesar is a hard rock band formed in the late 80's which had a short career before problems with their label, and the eclipsing of hard rock by grunge contributed to their decline.  This cover from their debut single was their most memorableDiabolic Tastemaker by the Cherry Poppin' DaddiesBruce's staff pick is a deep cut off the Daddies' debut album "Ferociously Stoned."  This horn-heavy track first appeared on their 1989 demo tape before it was added to their album.  The band  at the time was an amalgam of punk, funk, jazz, ska, and swing at the time, thought future albums would move heavily towards swing. If You Needed Somebody by Bad Company Julie features the second single off Bad Company's ninth studio album, Holy Water.  It was their first top 40 hit since “Rock and Roll Fantasy” back in 1979.  The rock ballad hails from BadCo's days with Brian Howe as the front man, as Paul Rodgers had left the group in 1982 and was performing solo at the time.  Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction Rob finishes off the staff picks with the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual, and the biggest single, topping the Billboard Modern Rock charts for four weeks.  The dog barking is Perry Farrell's pet Annie, who was brought to the studio.  The barking was not planned, but the coincidence was included on the track. COMEDY TRACK:Do the Bartman by The SimpsonsBart Simpson closes us out this week with this lost epic.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. The very last time the Firm played publicly was May 28, 1986 in good ol' Seattle. Everyone in the band knew it was the end of the project, and they all play their hearts out. Paul Rodgers outdoes himself with delivery and passion. Jimmy is very upbeat and talkative. This show is really good. You know how I am at best lukewarm on the Firm, overall, but the Mean Business tour sounds streets ahead of the 1985 tour. You're going to enjoy the energy, the music, and the balls of this show. Jimmy Page was in rough shape by the end of Led Zeppelin. His addictions had ravaged his body and he didn't contribute nearly as much to 1979's In Through The Out Door as he did all previous Zeppelin records. After the death of John Bonham, Jimmy fulfilled his obligations to release Coda, provided the soundtrack to Death Wish 2 as a favor to his neighbor and embarked on a brief fundraiser tour with lots of legends - The ARMS Tour. But he hadn't been very creative and wasn't keeping himself in match shape. After spending some time with his Swan Song brother Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), he concocted a plan to put together a new supergroup for the 80s. WIth Rodgers handling vocal and primary songwriter duties, Jimmy also enlisted Chris Slade (Tom Jones, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, AC/DC, UAWIL #91 guest) and "The Fretless Monster" Tony Franklin who he worked with on Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? This powerful lineup was to be the vehicle that would rejuvenate Jimmy Page and put him back on the road to superstardom. However, Page's contributions weren't what fans had come to expect from the guitar hero and it seemed that Jimmy was a bit out of place in a world dominated by MTV. Single Radioactive was an AOR hit and showcased a bit of what the band could do, ultimately helping their self-titled debut to gold status in the US. But most of the album is uneven and Page isn't showing up with the killer solos that were his calling card. However, Tony Franklin is an absolute monster on this record, filling in the gaps that Page leaves between his flourishes and playing well off the ever steady Slade. While Rodgers vocals are as strong as ever, his songwriting doesn't quite live up to the standard of his previous bands. It was a solid debut which led to a strong sophomore effort in Mean Business (1986) but because it celebrates it's 40th on February 11, 2025, we thought we'd take a hard look at The Firm and why it didn't hit the heights we all hoped it would Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Send us a textThis week we dig into the 1973 self-titled debut by Bad Company. Coming off of the success of Free, Paul Rodgers hooked up with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and along with former Free drummer Simon Kirk, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell, formed what may be the most American-sounding British band ever: Bad Company. Rodgers soulful and powerful voice and Ralphs crunchy guitars punctuate songs about the old west, ballads about sea birds, and tunes about physical love that don't take much work to interpret. Bad Company was a monster hit, topping the charts in US and reaching # 3 in the UK. It is not an album full deep thought and self reflection, but that doesn't matter because it is and album of catchy licks and high octane fun that helped define the radio-freindy heavy rock of the 1970's.Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

April 1989: The world was a strange mix of excess and transition. On one side, the neon-drenched MTV era was still riding high, with hair metal bands like Poison, Motley Crüe, and Def Leppard dominating the charts with their polished, radio-friendly anthems. Power ballads and arena rock were inescapable, and rock fans were tuned in to Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses. Yet, beneath the surface, change was brewing. Bands like Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden were slowly carving out a new, grittier sound that would soon transform the entire landscape.Amid this backdrop, Blue Murder made their entrance—not as another Sunset Strip glam act, but as a hard-hitting supergroup led by a guitar hero who had already proven himself with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. John Sykes wasn't looking to jump on the hair metal bandwagon. Instead, with Blue Murder, he aimed to bring the technical brilliance of the '70s into the late '80s, blending his bluesy, virtuoso guitar work with heavy grooves and intricate song structures. Sykes, along with legendary drummer Carmine Appice and fretless bass wizard Tony Franklin, formed a trio that drew on the legacy of hard rock and metal titans, delivering something deeper and more ambitious than most of their glam metal contemporaries.Yet, for all their talent, Blue Murder wasn't about writing catchy three-minute radio singles. Their self-titled debut album was a blend of towering guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and epic song structures that leaned closer to the ‘70s hard rock tradition of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple than the bubblegum metal that filled the charts. But in 1989, as hair metal ruled the airwaves and grunge was lurking around the corner, Blue Murder stood out—ambitious, raw, and musically masterful. The Road to Blue MurderJohn Sykes had already proven his chops with Whitesnake's 1987 album, a monster hit that spawned chart-topping singles and dominated MTV. But creative tensions with Whitesnake's leader, David Coverdale, led to Sykes' unceremonious departure just as the band was at the peak of its commercial success. Undeterred, Sykes began writing material for what would eventually become Blue Murder, determined to put together a powerhouse group that could rival his previous success. At first, Sykes wasn't planning to be the frontman. The band initially brought in some big-name vocalists to handle lead duties. Ray Gillen of Black Sabbath and Badlands fame was the first to join the lineup, contributing vocals to some early demos. But Gillen left after just a few months, reportedly due to creative differences. The next contender was Tony Martin, another former Black Sabbath singer, but he, too, didn't stick around for long. After several auditions and some disagreements with the label Geffen Records, the A&R team suggested that Sykes himself take over lead vocals. Despite being known more for his guitar work, Sykes stepped up, and his voice turned out to be a perfect match for the band's sound—gritty, soulful, and powerful. With legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who had played with the likes of Jeff Beck and Vanilla Fudge, and fretless bass virtuoso Tony Franklin, fresh off his stint with The Firm alongside Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, Blue Murder had a lineup that was nothing short of rock royalty. The result was a self-titled debut that combined technical brilliance with bluesy hard rock, reflecting Sykes' desire to channel the spirit of '70s heavyweights like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, rather than chasing the more formulaic sound of the late-'80s hair metal scene.Building the Sound: A Guitarist as a FrontmanFor a guy who wasn't originally a vocalist, Sykes delivered some serious vocal prowess on Blue Murder. He was filling big shoes, considering he had just played alongside David Coverdale, one of rock's great frontmen. And while the album isn't a complete departure from Whitesnake's bluesy, hard-hitting rock, it's more expansive, both musically and lyrically. The standout track, “Valley of the Kings,” showcases the epic grandeur Blue Murder was going for. Co-written by Black Sabbath's Tony Martin, the song combines powerful riffs, intricate solos, and a historical theme that was rare in the pop-metal scene of the time. This track had a “late '80s Sabbath” feel, blending hard rock with doom-like weight, something that set the band apart from the typical hair metal crowd.Tracks like “Jelly Roll” and “Out of Love” demonstrate the band's diversity—moving between blues-infused swagger and heartfelt ballads, all carried by Sykes' smooth yet powerful vocals and, of course, his signature guitar tone. The hosts also discussed how “Out of Love,” a lesser-known power ballad, was one of those hidden gems deserving far more attention than it ever received. The Legacy of Blue MurderThough the album charted respectably (peaking at #69 on the Billboard 200), it didn't make the impact that Whitesnake's 1987 album did. Part of the issue was the changing musical landscape. By 1989, the glam metal scene was beginning to saturate, and the introspective rawness of grunge was on the horizon. Blue Murder, with its complex musicianship and Sykes' ambitious songwriting, may have been too sophisticated for an audience that was more accustomed to quick-hit rock anthems. But for those in the know, Blue Murder became a cult classic. Its combination of blistering guitar work, thunderous drums, and intricate bass lines made it a musician's album—a performance record. For fans of technical prowess and intricate song structures, Blue Murder was a band worth rediscovering. What Could Have BeenDespite the talent and the potential, Blue Murder never achieved the commercial success many expected. Tensions with their label, Geffen Records, didn't help. Sykes believed Geffen was trying to sabotage the band in hopes he'd rejoin Whitesnake. Whether or not that's true, it's clear that Blue Murder didn't get the marketing push it deserved. After a follow-up album in 1993 (Nothing But Trouble), Blue Murder faded into the background, overshadowed by the grunge explosion. However, Sykes continued to be a respected figure in the hard rock and metal scenes, even though he never reached the heights of Whitesnake's success again.A Call to Revisit a Lost MasterpieceSo why does Blue Murder still resonate with those who know it? It's a record that transcends the pop-metal limitations of its time. If you're a fan of Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or just killer guitar work, this album is well worth revisiting. And for those who missed it the first time around, now's the perfect time to dive into one of the best-kept secrets of late '80s metal.Take a listen, let it transport you back to 1989, and then wonder how this gem flew under the radar.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Blue Murder * 22:17 - Black-Hearted Woman * 27:14 - Out of Love * 31:53 - Ptolemy * 37:59 - Billy * 39:04 - It's Too Late (demo w/ Ray Gillen on lead vocals) * Outro - Valley of the KingsMake Your Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 90s Rock, we rely on you, our listeners. Send us a Text Message.A renowned musician and drummer, known for his contributions to the iconic supergroups Free and Bad Company, reminisces about his childhood in rural Wales. Following a gig with a local cover band, The Manicas, he formed his own band, Heatwave where he did both vocals and drums that was inspired by Ringo Starr after watching him on television. His life took a pivotal turn when a coin toss determined his fate, amidst a looming deadline set by his parents. Transitioning through experiences with Black Cat Bones, he ultimately teamed up with Paul Kossoff and Free, marking the recording of the smash hit "All Right Now," subsequent tours, and the eventual decline of the group. In an era where attitudes towards drug were much different, the band grappled with Paul Kossoff's addiction, which significantly impacted their trajectory. The decision to join forces with Paul Rodgers led to the inception of Bad Company, with intriguing stories surrounding the band's name.Legends suggest that during the recording sessions for the LP "Bad Company," band members were scattered throughout the house. He reflects on his favorite Bad Company track to perform, as well as his tenure with the groups Wildlife and Lonerider. Expressing disappointment over the absence of Free and Bad Company in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he shares anecdotes of playing with Chuck Berry and the profound moment of drumming alongside Ringo Starr, whose influence sparked his musical journey.Beyond the band scene, he released a solo record titled "Because of You" with Chicago-based: The Empty Pockets. Recounting Bad Company's final 2019 show in Las Vegas alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd, he discusses his newfound interest in composing movie scores and the significance of contributing to numerous timeless songs. The interview concludes with insights into his life beyond music.Simon Kirke Links:Official Website: https://officialsimonkirke.com/homeListen to Lonerider: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5ZYxdswbSRegLO54dTNey6 Before the Lights Links:A Heartbeat & A Guitar: Johnny Cash & the Making of Bitter Tear Docuseries: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/docuseries/bitter-tearsHire Tommy to Speak: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/public-speakingBecome a BTL Member: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/supportBefore the Lights Website: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/Get Tommy a Glass of Vino: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beforethelights                        Support the Show.Follow the show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@beforethelightspodcast?lang=enFollow Tommy on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/tcanale3Rate & Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-lights/id1501245041Email the host: beforethelightspod@gmail.com

On May 24, 1974, the world were introduced to new "supergroup" on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song record label with the self-titled debut of Bad Company. Sporting a world-class lineup of Paul Rodgers (Free) on vocals, Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) on guitar, Boz Burrell (King Crimson) on bass and Simon Kirke (Free) on drums, Bad Company were seasoned veterans of the studio and the road. After becoming disenchanted with their previous bands, the guys got together to form a straight ahead hard rock act that was built for American rock radio and to play live. And while the record went gold in their home of the UK, Bad Company (1974) is 5x platinum in the US. Paul Rodgers provides can go from singing with raw power on Rock Steady to the sweet Seagull to the soulful lament in Ready For Your Love. Ralphs big guitar riffs would help define what 70s hard rock was and the rhythm section of Burrell and Kirke were steady and creative. Though only two songs were released as official singles (Can't Get Enough & Movin' On), US rock radio fans have become familiar with the entire album thanks to DJs digging into this record for half a century.
