Mike Harmeier was still in his early 20s when he formed Silverada (Previously known as Mike and the Moonpies) From the start, they were the definition of a workingman's country band, cutting their teeth with five-hour sets on Austin's dancehall circuit before spreading their music to the rest of America. Mike Harmeier is the lead singer and principal songwriter for his band Mike and the Moonpies. The Texas-based band has released eight studio albums including their most recent record One to Grow On which is an absolute masterwork. Their 2019 record Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold, recorded at Abbey Road studios and including the London Symphony Orchestra brought Mike and the Moonpies critical acclaim and scores of new listeners. The Texas Rangers post-reconstruction was primarily a force to kill Indians and deter Mexican forces from establishing a foothold in the territory. They were a far cry from the Texas lawmen we know. , but all of that was about to change back then.You didn't have to be Nolan Ryan to become a ranger. You just needed a rifle and a horse. Sam Bass would become the first white American target for the Rangers who wanted to prove to the federal government. They were the law in Texas and had dominion over their fellow citizens. Mike and the Moonpies front man, Mike Harmeier was singing in bars by his early teens.  Don’t take my word for it though.  Just check out their song, “Steak Night at the Prairie Rose” and that should give you a pretty good idea of just who Mike Harmeier is. Mike and the Moonpies were once known as Austin’s premier dancehall band with several residencies around town before more recently taking their show from coast to coast. One of the things that sticks out to me about the Moonpies is their use of “twinning” on steel and lead guitar on several of their songs.  If you don’t know what twinning is, never fear.  We discuss it a little further in depth in the episode.
