In this episode, Joe interviews Melanie Curtis: world record professional skydiver, keynote speaker, coach, co-host of the Trust the Journey podcast, and author of How to Fly: Life Lessons From a Professional Skydiver. Curtis shares her journey from taking her first transformative leap out of an airplane to becoming a leader in skydiving, public speaking, and now, the integration of psychedelics into personal growth. She discusses the parallels between skydiving and working with psychedelics – most notably in the idea of leaping into the unknown, trusting the universe, and in the potential that can be unlocked after you've come back down to earth. While relatively new to the psychedelic space, she stresses the importance of sharing your story and opening up dialogues, no matter how small you think your voice may be. She talks about: Her early psilocybin journeys and recent ayahuasca experiences How she came out of the psychedelic closet to her Mother, and learning of the power of small steps and trusting the universe Realizing how her Father's behavior affected her, and how it has made her more connected to her femininity and other women The power of confidence and how much better we'd all be if the fear of humiliation wasn't so prominent in our lives and more! Melanie Curtis is a professional skydiver who led a group of  80 women skydivers from 22 countries to make history by setting a new world record: the largest all-women head-down (“vertical”) skydive. Named Project 19 after the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote, the spectacle celebrated women's rights and highlighted women's issues.Though they aimed for a record of 100, this fantastic team still got it done (breaking the 2016 record of 65). They took 29 jumps in total, including practice and warm-ups. The ladies pulled off the only successful skydiving world record this year; there were two others mixed men/women.Melanie has completed over 12,000 jumps to date and is a sought-after speaker and consultant. Thill Seekers..15 Remarkable Women in Extreme Sports written by Ann McCallum Staats is a book full of adventure and fascinating stories! For myself, the topic of extreme sports has always been very interesting for me to learn about. This collection of stories introduces readers to diverse and passionate women who are passionate about sports such as wingsuit flying, skateboarding, cave diving and race car driving.  The book is organized into five sections which include Maximum Sky, Extreme Ocean, Radical Rides, Epic Ice and Snow and Adrenaline Earth. Within each story include a short biography of the featured person, facts about the specific sports and ways to learn more (e.g. social media accounts including youtube).  This book is ideal for both home and the classroom. This non-fiction book is perfect for older elementary and middle grade students. I also think that older students and adults would love this book.  Ann McCallum Staats didn't just learn about the sports, she also experienced them herself! She wanted to get a taste of what it's like be a sky diver like Melanie Curtis. Check out Ann below!

“Fun and excellence are not mutually exclusive,” says Melanie Curtis, who grew up with a pilot father and sky diving hanger and “drop zone" in her back yard but did not take her first jump out of an airplane until she was 18. “I believe love and hilarity are the two most important things in life. When doing deep work, we can hold space for each other and bring lightness and humor into the work as well.” Curtis, who competed professionally, believes that people can use physical bravery as a “stepping stone into emotional bravery” or it can be an avoidance tactic. She also believes teammates and learning helps us transverse “fear and feeling paralyzed.” Find out more about her at www.TrustTheJourney.today or mel@melaniecurtis.com

No one knows this better than Peloton co-founder and CEO John Foley, who has one of the most epic “No-to-Yes” stories in startup history. When he founded the company in 2012, skeptics abounded — especially among investors. But John pushed forward, convincing co-founders, angel investors, and then riders, one at a time. As he converted those skeptical customers — in their flagship fitness studio, in their stores, and on their at-home bikes — the feedback loops kicked in. We talk about how one question changed her life. And at the end of the podcast I'm going to let you know more about an amazing group she is working with to honor the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which gave women the right to vote. They wanted more adventure in their lives and wanted to pursue more scenery and get serious time outdoors. When they decided to hike the Appalachian Trail, Jay had his a point in his personal skydiving career that he felt he had checked the goals he wanted to accomplish. He was looking for a new goal that would be connected to nature, earthy and hiking the Appalachian Trail felt like the goal that he and Fernanda decided to set their eyes on and the enthusiasm was there.   It took 2 years of planning from the time they made the goal before they started the trail. They wanted to make sure they had the knowledge, equipment, and training to complete the trail. The attrition rate is high on the Appalachian Trail and not many people finish the trail who start.   They also wanted to understand why they wanted to hike the Appalachian trail. They started listing out the reasons why they wanted to do it and they wanted to set a goal of completing it and hike the Appalachian Trail the purist way by hiking the entire trail and doing it in one shot. Hiking the Appalachian Trail: The Beginning On the first day, Jay and Fernanda were anxious. They started at Springer Mountain, about an hour away from Atlanta. About 3,000 people start the trail every year and the majority of them start at Springer Mountain. It was the first week of March (most people start the beginning of March to April). Most people do a northbound hike and follow the seasons. Their friend Annie dropped them off and they got their photographs by the sign.   Jay and Fernanda starting the Appalachian Trail What's interesting is that you don't start the trail until you have reached the top of Springer Mountain. It's a journey from the start just to get to the starting point. A View Into the World of Skydiving Skydiving has always been near and dear to my heart. I have over 400 skydives and I started skydiving when I was 20 years old. My first time skydiving started in Lake Wales, Florida outside of Orlando. I will never forget being in the back of the Twin Otter strapped to my instructor and doing a backflip out of the plane. We saw earth, sky, earth, sky, earth, sky, then earth again. When I felt the wind at my face in freefall, I realized that skydiving was not so scary after all. I started smiling and laughing in freefall. Once we landed, I signed up to go for a 2nd tandem skydive. At the end of my 2nd tandem, and decided to hang out at the dropzone (skydiving center) longer. As people finished skydiving for the day, they went over to a fire pit. Skydivers gathered around the fire and started telling adventure stories and their 'oh sh&*% moments'. As I sat there listening to the crackling fire and the skydiving adventure stories, I realized I had found a special group of people. One by one the skydivers left the fire and started to retreat into their tents and trailers at the dropzone. I saw that these skydivers lived there. I had found a community... an adventure community and I realized I wanted to be one of them, and so I did. I learned to skydive (which didn't come naturally). I'll save my learning to skydive story for another day, but it's a good one, I promise. Gail's first time skydiving in Lake Wales, Florida That's the start of my story, but I wanted to bring someone I highly respect in the skydiving world on the show to talk about her first time skydiving, Melanie Curtis. World-Renowned Skydiver, Melanie Curtis   Melanie Curtis and Jason Moleski, professional and world-renowned skydivers started a new podcast called Trust the Journey. I thought bringing Melanie onto the show would be a great idea because she is a life coach and helps people overcome fear and employ courage. She helps others have a mindset shift between what we are capable of doing and what is possible. Melanie has been skydiving for 23 years and her first skydive still motivates her and essentially changed her for the better. Melanie also runs a group called the VSC (virtual skydiving coach) which helps new skydivers entering the sport. Melanie Curtis's First Time Skydiving Melanie was 18 years old when she went on her first skydive. Aviation was in her family since she was alive. Her dad was a pilot and had an airport at her house (a grass strip by her house). Her dad opened a skydive at the house with his best friend that was in upstate New York. Their dropzone is no longer in operation but it was called Verona Skydiving Center back in the day. Melanie sat in on the first jump course many times growing up because she grew up around the dropzone. She was so scared to go for the first time and could have jumped when she was 16 (today you need to be 18 to go skydiving in the US), but she took her time to go on her first skydive. One day after Melanie graduated from high school she decided she would go skydiving the very next day. She told herself that, "tomorrow is the day". The next day she entered her first jump course for her first static line jump and had the intention of making her first skydive after the ground course. She was afraid, but her courage exceeded her fear and she went to that first jump course with the intention of making her first skydive. The Day Came for Melanie to Jump Most people who go for their first skydive go on a tandem skydive (which is highly recommended). Melanie did her first skydive 18 years ago and her first skydive was static line and she wasn't attached to an instructor. Melanie made her first skydive out of a small Cessna. Melanie was sitting behind the pilot's (her dad) seat facing the tail of the plane, next to the door. They were flying on jump run which is the height where they would exit the airplane. It was time to open the door,

There's this little thing called transcendental meditation that might just blow your mind. It can help you connect your body and mind; build a better brain; be in the zone; accept losses; and so much more! Rosenthal Norman E. Rosenthal is a world-renowned psychiatrist, public speaker, and best-selling author who is known for his innovative research and inspirational writings. Kari interviews him this week about transcendental meditation, mindfulness, SAD, and much more! Pleate note: Always consult your physician. The following interview is not intended to replace the advice of your physician or medical care provider. Rosenthal is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine and is listed as one of the best doctors in America. He is a highly cited researcher who has written over 200 scholarly articles, and authored or co-authored eight popular books. These include Winter Blues, the New York Times bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation, and the Los Angeles Times bestseller The Gift of Adversity. Rosenthal has conducted numerous clinical trials of medications and alternative treatments, such as transcendental meditation for psychiatric disorders, and the treatment of depression with Botox. He is the TRLS June Book Club author, for his book, Super Mind: How to Boost Performance and Live a Richer and Happier Life Through Transcendental Meditation. Rosenthal has SAD himself and talks about his experiences with the disorder. He talks a bit about the signs/symptoms of SAD versus when you have the “winter blues.” When meditating, you get fluxes of alpha waves, especially in the frontal areas of the brain, that are soothing. Rosenthal talks about brain coherence, which means different parts of the brain experience the same wavelengths at the same time. This is associated with the brain collaborating and being more efficient. He explains the difference between mindfulness and medita Kari talks about the “Jon Kabat-Zinn” way of meditation and Deepak Chopra and Oprah's meditation class. Kari talks about mindfulness stress-based reduction training. Transcendental meditation can help in the following ways: connecting body and mind, building a better brain, being in the zone, having internal growth, asking yourself, “Who do I want to be?”, being engaged with relationships or work, accepting losses, and so on. Rosenthal points out two particular chapters: Meditate and Grow Rich and Meditate and Grow Happy. Kari mentions one story in Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation with Ray Dalio. They discuss sleep and transcendental meditation. He speaks to practicing transcendental meditation and running. During transcendental meditation, according to Rosenthal, the brain delivers you gifts from your subconscious. Rosenthal speaks to how parts of the government/the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are using transcendental meditation. Kari talks about finding her “Cameron Diaz” moment of sorts while recording The Running Lifestyle Camp ad. Listen as Erica recounts her incredible running journey and her journey to becoming a healthier person. Erica raves about Marathoning for Mortals: A Regular Person's Guide to the Joy of Running or Walking a Half-Marathon or Marathon by John Bingham. She explains how she runs being legally blind. Her goal is to run with the Achilles International team at the TCS New York City Marathon in 2017. Erica gives recommendations that she has for runners who are looking to start (after you get to decide what a runner means to you). Hear what being a runner means to Kari. Erica offers tips for getting off the couch and starting ru Kari mentions “The Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, And Rebel: Our Four Tendencies” (Episode 120). Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, talks about the nutritional benefits of eating potato skins (no, not the appetizer!). The benefit to eating potato skins is the fiber that they contain. They are mostly a source of insoluble fiber. Serena reviews the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. She also defines what a “standard American diet” looks like. When transitioning from a standard American diet to a more nutrient-rich diet, many people have issues increasing their fiber intake. As you increase vegetables, steam them or chop them up finely to break down the cellulose/fiber to help digest them with less intolerance. Gratitude Jar (Woot! Woot!) Kari is grateful for is a new product at Trader Joe's called parsnip chips. They are so good that they might be a trigger food, but thankfully they only have a few ingredients! Serena is grateful for kettlebells. Follow Serena on Periscope @SerenaMarieRD to check them out! Next week, Kari talks all about the post-race runner's' high.
