This is one of my favorite podcast episodes to date! In this conversation, I dive into the "behind the music"—both literally and figuratively—of one of country music's rising stars and the world of professional sailing. Through it all, you'll get to know two extraordinary individuals: Caroline Jones and Nick Dana.Caroline Jones is a talented singer-songwriter and the only female member of the Grammy-winning Zac Brown Band. Nick Dana, on the other hand, is a world-class professional sailor with an impressive career that includes competing in the Volvo Ocean Race and America's Cup. I've known Nick since he was a toddler (a fact that reveals my age), as I was close friends with his late older brother. It was such a joy to catch up with these two incredibly accomplished individuals—who also happen to be married! Caroline shares her journey into music, her creative process, and the inspirations behind her songwriting. We discuss her skyrocketing career, from touring with legends like Jimmy Buffett to performing in stadiums with the Zac Brown Band. She also talks about her latest single, No Tellin', and her upcoming tour. Nick gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional sailor, detailing his path to success, the challenges of competing in events like the Volvo Ocean Race, and the thrill of sailing in the prestigious America's Cup.We also explore their beautiful love story—how they were serendipitously set up (thanks to some well-placed meddling by Nick's mom and sister!), fell in love just before the COVID-19 lockdowns, and how their relationship has transformed their lives and careers. Caroline even shares how she once vowed never to marry, only to find herself happily embracing both marriage and parenthood. This episode is packed with inspiration, laughter, and heartfelt moments. You won't want to miss it! If you enjoy the show, please rate and review. Be sure to follow us on Instagram @TheInterviewWithLeslie. A new podcast is released every Wednesday.

613 Part 1 of out chat with Ana Croegaert about the removal of Confederate monuments. We also talked to her about her participation in second line parades around the city. “In 2017, the City of New Orleans removed four segregation-era monuments celebrating the Southern Confederacy and valorizing white supremacist ideology. As in other cities, efforts to remove such monuments are not new, and historically have been connected to collective challenges to racialized inequality, and more recently to transnational postcolonial struggles. Given the longstanding activism in favor of removing such monuments I ask, Why now? In exploring this question, I examine the circulation of images, talk, and text about the monuments in relation to the city's post-2005 political economy and find that people's expressed sentiments regarding the statues illuminate the ongoing challenges faced by New Orleans' multiracial working-class and poor residents. I argue that the city administration's framing of the monuments as emblems of an unequal past decouples the monuments' removal from the urgent need to meaningfully address present inequalities.” “I am a Chicago-based anthropologist working with ethnography, performance, and artmaking to expand awareness of people's creative efforts to deal with the aftermath of harm and to craft hopeful futures. From coffee cultures to public memorials, my work spans kitchen cupboards, urban gardens, and city streets to record how people make meaning in their daily lives.” Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. Before being known as one of the greatest guitarists of modern times - John Clayton Mayer was just a kid from Connecticut who was obsessed with three things: Canadian Actor Michael J. Fox in his Iconic role as Marty McFly in the 80s sci-fi adventure romp Back To The Future. The Blues. And of course - the instrument that tied those other two obsessions together - The Guitar. And, by the way - I don’t use the word obsession lightly - According to John, this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill relationship with the instrument that many a teenage boy find themselves enamoured with - John was so single minded with becoming a guitar virtuoso his parents actually took him to be psychologically evaluated over his commitment to guitar playing - it was the only thing he ever wanted to do - like… ever. After high school, John Mayer had hoped to skip college completely to become a full time independent musician - but he was convinced by his parents to seek further education, and enrolled in the lauded Berklee College of Music at age 19. At Berklee, Mayer met eventual Zac Brown Band musician Clay Cook, who swiftly convinced him to… Drop out of Berklee after only two semesters. By 1999, John would package up his 9 best songs for his debut EP Inside Wants Out as a companion record to all of his touring - and by the year 2000 - with the help of a lawyer, he would sign with small label Aware Records, who would fund the original recording of an internet-only release of his debut record Room For Squares. Although it was originally a bit of a slow-burner, Room For Squares would spend 95 weeks on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, eventually going platinum off of the successes of No Such Thing and Grammy-Award Winning Follow up single ‘Your Body is A Wonderland'. Just like Room For Squares before it, Mayer’s virtuosity in both guitar playing and songwriting got him over the line with discerning pop music fans; his followup, Heavier Things would debut at Number One on the Billboard 200 - and with the success of single 'Daughters', would beat Squares’ 95 week run with a 98 week sprint on the chart. But, after three big hits that launched him into the ‘sensitive songwriter guy’ stratosphere, John Mayer was ready to break the space-time Continuum. This is the story of John Mayer's Waiting on the World to Change, with newly unearthed audio from John Mayer himself.

The sisters are sooooooo excitedthat we got to talk to Bowen Young! We chatted with this divine duo about allthings music, like Brandon deciding to move to Nashville and “just give it awhirl,” and Clare's advice to “lean into the weird” because we're all uniqueand special. Nashville-based duo BOWEN * YOUNG embarks on a musical journey with their debut album, Us, a melodic tapestry woven by the harmonious souls of Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young. Produced by acclaimed Americana songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, their 10-track revelation is slated for a global release on May 3rd via Snakefarm/PIAS. Hailing from rural Australia, Clare, and Connecticut native Brandon infuse 'Us' with haunting, ethereal songs that delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss, and unwavering hope. Their musical collaboration, aptly named "Cinematic Americana," is a testament to the emotive songwriting, honest lyrics, and hypnotic harmonies that encapsulate their special bond. In the luminous shadow of their individual backgrounds, Clare, famed for her role as Scarlett O'Connor in 'Nashville,' and Brandon, a seasoned musician touring with legends like John Hiatt, share a common North Star—sweeping emotion, intimate moments, and bombastic sound. The couple's creative synergy found its missing piece in Sean McConnell. The revelation struck while composing 'Water To Wine,' a song that seamlessly captures the essence of their profound connection. Yet, life's shadows emerged in the form of 'Dangerous Love,' a single born from a harrowing experience when an assailant invaded their home. Undeterred, Clare and Brandon transformed adversity into art, choosing joy over fear. Entering the studio with McConnell and producer Roger Alan Nichols, they discovered the sweet spot of true emotion, using their crackling energy as the cornerstone. From the stripped-back 'Halo' to the unpolished honesty of 'To The Bone,' each track on 'Us' resonates with the authenticity of their musical journey. Clare's arrival in Music City in 2012 marked the beginning of a musical voyage with luminaries like Vince Gill and the Zac Brown Band. A pediatric cancer survivor, her life story adds a poignant layer to their narrative, emphasizing the resilience to embrace both light and dark. Brandon's journey, beginning in 2000, unfolds with nights spent filling composition books with melodies in Nashville. His collaborations with John Hiatt and contributions to projects such as 'Johnny Cash Forever Words' showcase the breadth of his musical prowess, heard in shows like 'Shameless'. Fate orchestrated their union in 2013, when Brandon became Clare's last-minute duet partner. Their unique chemistry blossomed into love, culminating in a magical proposal at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and a union officiated by John Carter Cash in 2017. The couple's musical saga continues to resonate globally such as sharing the stage with Billy Joel at BST/Hyde Park last year, a headlining US tour, and an astounding 838% growth on Spotify. There are two truths I want you to hold at once. The first truth is that you have no time to waste being someone you're not. I recently interviewed this young entrepreneur named Nicolas Kirkland, and he said something that stuck with me — “Why do you gotta act like everybody else? Everybody else is taken.” We're either on the hamster wheel of trying to fit in or we've slipped into the sinkhole of mistaking someone else's dream for our own. Related note: One of my absolute favorite musical tunes is “From Now On” performed by Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman. He lets his father-in-law and insecurity about growing up poor corrupt his ambitions, and he quickly finds himself living the life of a two-faced businessman. Somehow he lost touch with who he was at the start. But it wasn't too late to turn things around. BTW the Zac Brown Band does an A+ cover of this song I highly recommend.“The politicians praised my name. But those are someone else's dreams, the pitfalls of the man I became. For years and years, I chased their cheers, at the crazy speed of always needing more.”Geeky Stoics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The second truth is that you can also become the person you want to be by simply playing the part. You can call it “fake it to make it” or couch it in that old saying, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” These truths could be mistaken for a contradiction, one demanding authenticity and another promoting inauthenticity, but it all depends on how honest you're being with yourself about who you're meant to be. None of us come into the world born the way we'd like to eventually leave the world. We are in a process of becoming. The trick is becoming the person you want to see in the mirror till your final days, and doing that work for yourself…not someone else. I hope you enjoy this video for Geeky Stoics subscribers. Natalya Kay is a fiddler in the Irish tradition and a key member of Celtic super group Gaelic Storm. She and I met in the spring of 2020 when she moved into the house next door to mine in East Nashville. I think the first time we jammed was at a party in my front yard. I remember thinking two things about that encounter. One was, Man this girl can really play! The other was, being shocked to hear her say she had no interest in any kind of career as a professional musician. That seems like a long time ago now. This year she played countless festivals with Gaelic Storm, stadium shows with the Zac Brown Band, and a few weeks ago she was at the Hollywood Bowl sharing the stage with Harrison Ford, Jackson Brown and Brandi Carlile. Afterward, she got props from none other than Sir Paul McCartney.Natalya's meteoric rise has been the result not of an unrelenting determination, but her genuine talent and as she describes here, a consistent decision to walk through whatever door that opened, despite the chorus of self-doubt ringing in her ears. In the course of this lively conversation we come back to the theme of insecurity - a part of every artist's experience - and of resisting the temptation to let it win. Natalya laughingly describes the moment when she got the call from Gaelic Storm, the gig that ultimately changed her life. She tried to talk them out of the audition, saying she wasn't a good fit, she didn't have any experience. They insisted, she acquiesced. Now she's on the road traveling the world. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication! To support the podcast, writing, and music, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As a quiet homeschooled girl from rural Maine, she describes the irony of feeling absolutely at home on stage with GS, how she feels like it's the most natural thing in the world, being up there in front of all those people, fiddling away.Speaking of, I ask her about a few of the approaches specific to the tradition of Irish fiddling, the rolls for one. She demonstrates how she does it, right there at the table. It will be interesting to anyone who loves or even has a passing attraction to Irish music. Natalya breaks down the technique and shows how it affects the play of the overall tune. I loved seeing that. No player am I in the Irish way, but I do have something of a background in bluegrass and old-time music, and there's enough of a language shared that I felt I might back Natalya on her performance of Cliffs of Moher, a popular Irish jig which, being in 6/8 time, requires a completely different approach than the 4/4 of its American cousin. I did my best to stay out of the way and let Natalya's playing shine, a performance that alone was worth the listen.I hope you enjoy this conversation with a truly fresh voice in Irish Music.Find Natalya:Website Instagram Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe
Grateful to catch up with John Driskell Hopkins (Hop) again to see how he's doing with his ALS diagnosis. KennyChesney has built a career on songs that define people's lives; that empower people in all kinds of moments. His album, Born, continues that connection with his fans. Songs have a power to make people happy; on this album that's evident with tracks like “Just To Say We Did,” “Born,” “Few Good Stories,” “One More Sunset,” “This Too Shall Pass.”· When making a record, capturing life as he's seen it lived is important to him.· BORN in many ways is definitive Kenny Chesney; it hits so many aspects of who he is and makes all of those facets fit together.· His music embodies the philosophies he lives by. We also talk about his concert this weekend in Denver and what fans can expect. It all kicks off with Denise's Dirt, quick look at pop culture.

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Chris Fryar, primarily known for his work with the Zac Brown Band. He has also worked with Oteil and the Peacemakers, led by bassist Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, as well as with Victor Wooten, John Popper, Steve Bailey, and many more. Chris is powerful, creative, and consistent, yet very reactive and conversational with his playing. I was so happy to chat with him. I'll be honest—I haven't really said this in an intro before, but this conversation is what I envisioned when I started this podcast. Chris is incredible at sharing his story through his choices and offers invaluable advice along the way. This is hands down one of my favorite episodes. Please enjoy my chat with Chris Fryar about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. And make sure you check out his honorable mentions. He's got plenty, and they'll all make you a better player. I promise. Cheers! Goodwin spoke with Wainwright about his songwriting and recently released country music album “Hey Y'all.” Wainwright's musical adventures have also included a debut at the Grand Ole Opry and an opening slot for Zac Brown Band at Chaifetz Arena.
The B-Word with Joanne Bolt. Real Life | Real Business | Real Success for Women in Real Estate
In this episode of "The B Word," I'm back, and boy, do I have a story for you! So, picture this: it's January, and I'm at this awesome retreat, feeling all pumped up for the new year. Then bam! I get a call from my husband, Jeff. Now, Jeff's the kind of guy who avoids doctors like the plague, but this time, he's in such excruciating pain that we end up rushing him to the ER. Turns out, it's kidney stones.
Singer-songwriter Caroline Jones sits down with Caroline Hobby to talk about her extremely unique life story. Caroline recently became the first female member of The Zac Brown Band. She shares about the call she got from Zac Brown asking her to come on the road and how that eventually led to an official position in the band. Caroline shares about her other mentors in the industry including the huge role Jimmy Buffett played in her career. Jimmy Buffett, notorious for having no openers, brought Caroline out as an opening act and special guest in 2018 and 2019. She shares that while on the road, Jimmy & Mac McAnally even wrote a song about her titled “Gulf Coast Girl.” We delve into Caroline's backstory of growing up in Connecticut in a non-musical household and then moving in with her grandmother in New York City to go to an arts high school. After finishing school, Caroline made her way to Nashville to further her songwriting craft and she immediately felt right at home. For many years, Caroline focused solely on music, not allowing herself to really have a personal life. She shares about the synchronicities that led up to her meeting her sailor husband. Caroline details how they moved to New Zealand right after meeting one another and the magic of falling in love in such a beautiful place while the world was shut down during the pandemic. Caroline also recently became a mother. She talks about her home-birth, how she's evolved into motherhood and more.
