Singer Songwriter Jaime Wyatt tells us about signing her first record label as a teenager, achieving early success before losing that deal and being put through the music-industry wringer, battling a nasty drug addiction and serving close to a year in L.A. county jail for robbing her heroin dealer. Musician Jaime Wyatt became a fan of Neal Casal back when he was playing with the Cardinals. She suggested writing together when she met him in Ventura, California, but felt too shy to follow up to his affirmative response. Cut to years later when producer Shooter Jennings asked her how she'd feel about having Neal Casal play guitar on her next album. Jaime enthusiastically said yes and today you can hear Neal's awesome guitar work on her 2020 album, Neon Cross. In this episode, Jaime talks about working with Neal in the studio, why she chose to record "Need Shelter" from the 2009 album Sweeten the Distance for the Highway Butterfly tribute album, and shares some road survival tips for industry folks. 2021 no ha comenzado bien. Con una simple semana de recorrido ya se hacía notar en el peor de los sentidos, arrebatándonos a algunos artistas de nuestra querida #Americana que, como Ed Bruce, moría el pasado viernes, día 8, en Clarksville, Tennessee, por causas naturales. Su faceta como compositor resaltó sobre la de vocalista y gracias a su firma saboreamos canciones míticas como "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys", una canción que él mismo había grabado para United Artists en 1975 y que pasó a ser uno de los temas con el que mejor se identifica el movimiento Outlaw gracias a Waylon Jennings y Willie Nelson que la llevaron a la cima de las listas en 1978. Se inició con el rockabilly y pasó al country más tradicional para firmar algunos de los éxitos de Charlie Louvin, Crystal Gayle o Tanya Tucker y destacar incluso como actor. También hemos perdido a Jamie O'Hara, antiguo miembro de los O'Kanes además de un magnífico vocalista y compositor, que murió el pasado día 7 en la residencia Alive debido a un cáncer extraordinariamente agresivo. En este 2021 celebraremos los 50 años de la publicación del álbum Coal Miner's Daughter de Loretta Lynn cuando el veteranisimo icono de la country music nos regala un nuevo álbum que pretenda dar su apoyo personal a la presencia de la mujer en ese género musical. Eso la relaciona con John Carter Cash, hijo del Hombre de Negro, que ha producido el trabajo, de la misma forma que fue el impulso de Johnny Cash. En la madrugada del pasado viernes se emitió en video HD el primero de los conciertos temáticos que Lucinda Williams ha grabado con el título de Lu's Jukebox en apoyo de promotores y salas de conciertos, que están sufriendo los rigores de esta pandemia. La entrada da derecho a verlo durante 48 horas después de su emisión. Runnin’ Down A Dream: A Tribute To Tom Petty fueron 13 canciones durante casi una hora y entre ellos se encontraba este desafío contra la opresión y las dificultades que es "I Won't Back Down", uno de los cortes del debut de Tom Petty en solitario con el álbum Full Moon Fever en 1989. La canción fue fruto de la colaboración de Petty con su buen amigo Jeff Lynne. Como ya adelantamos hace algunas semanas, el segundo de los seis conciertos previstos hasta final de año se emitirá el próximo jueves 12 de noviembre y se llama Northern Souls: From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. Además, está prevista la edición posterior en CD y vinilo de toda la serie. En Runnin’ Down A Dream: A Tribute To Tom Petty, el debut de la serie de conciertos temáticos de Lucinda Williams, hubo momentos tan solemnes como “Wildflowers”, la canción que dio nombre al segundo álbum en solitario del músico de Florida. Un trabajo que fue recortado a un álbum sencillo, pero que ahora ha sido reeditado en amplios formatos que nos permiten tomar conciencia del estado anímico y artístico de Tom Petty en 1994. Hoy se cumplen exactamente 26 años de la edición de Wildflowers de Tom Petty, el más personal de los registros del artista de Gainsville. Y desde hace 15 días está en el mercado Wildflowers & All The Rest, esa reedición en la que el músico estuvo trabajando hasta su muerte. De esta forma, ahora podemos escuchar canciones tan sutiles como “There Goes Angela (Dream Away)”, otra muestra de sus maquetas caseras. Wildflowers fue un disco en el que intervinieron todos los miembros de los Heartbreakers, con esa llegada a la batería de Steve Ferrone como sustituto de Stan Lynch en la formación. Mike Campbell ha sido siempre uno de los músicos más activos de los Heartbreakers. Es un excelente guitarrista y compone espléndidas canciones que han sido grabadas por artistas de mucho prestigio. Sabíamos que Campbell tocaba desde hacía 15 años en una banda llamada los Dirty Knobs, con el guitarrista Jason Sinay, el batería Matt Laug y el bajista Lance Morrison. En cierto sentido, recordaba a Mudcrutch, de quienes también formó parte en cuanto a dar rienda suelta a sus inquietudes por recordar ciertos sonidos clásicos del rock. A finales de noviembre se publicará definitivamente Wreckless Abandon, el álbum de debut del cuarteto que se frenó con la llegada de la pandemia y la imposibilidad de hacer giras. Puro rock de raíces norteamericanas, colaboraciones de Benmont Trench y Chris Stapleton y canciones de la intensidad de “Fuck That Guy”, con un vídeo perfectamente actualizado. Ayer se editó Recollections, el nuevo Ep de Wynonna, con cinco versiones muy personales interpretadas de forma espontánea. Así encontramos clásicos como "Feelin' Good" de Nina Simone, una versión enternecedora de "Angel From Montgomery" de John Prine o “Ramble On Rose” de Grateful Dead junto a Bob Weir. Compuesto por Jerry García y Robert Hunter, "Ramble On Rose", uno de esos temas de la banda californiana que generan más preguntas que respuestas, fue interpretado por primera vez por Grateful Dead en el Auditorio Northrop Auditorium en el campus de la Universidad de Minnesota en Minneapolis, exactamente el 19 de octubre de 1971, el día en que Keith Godchaux tocó en directo por primera vez con los Dead. Neon Cross ha fortalecido la carrera de Jaime Wyatt y ha afianzado la personalidad de la artista californiana. La producción tan afinada de Shooter Jennings ha reforzado sus propuestas sonoras para contar sus luchas reales contra el dolor, la adicción y la aceptación de su sexualidad. Esto último se refleja en "Rattlesnake Girl", arropado en ciertos elementos cercanos a la psicodelia. Cantar, como hace Jaime, sobre su orientación sexual no es algo que se aborde con frecuencia en la country music, por lo que escucharlo de una mujer que aún está despegando en ese género resulta audaz y emotivo. Es el último de sus singles y una de las canciones que ha impactado en las emisoras de country en estas fechas. Nos hemos acercado esta vez a la gran pantalla para hablar de una nueva película, que se llama Yellow Rose y protagoniza la actriz Eva Noblezada, de padre filipino y madre mejicana. Trata sobre Rose García, una niña filipina indocumentada que sueña con dejar algún día su pueblecito de Texas para cantar música country. Todo cambia cuando detienen a su madre por inmigración y ella huye hasta la ciudad de Austin, conocida como la capital del mundo de la música en directo. Eva Noblezada canta así “Square Peg”, uno de los momentos más emotivos de la película y que sigue la tradición de la música country a la perfección, contando con la ayuda de su compañero de reparto, Dale Watson, un veterano músico de country que estuvo el pasado año en España y que en la cinta ayuda a la joven a salir adelante. Él ha compuesto todas las canciones de la película junto a su directora, Diane Paragas, también de origen filipino. J.D. Souther ha firmado algunas de las canciones más representativas de la música popular estadounidense de las últimas décadas, entre ellas “New Kid In Town” o “The Best Of My Love” para los Eagles, o "White Rhythm and Blues" y “Faithless Love” para Linda Ronstadt, con quien tuvo una estrecha relación. Mañana, este nativo de Detroit, en Michigan, cumplirá 75 años. Es uno de los mejores ejemplos del country rock californiano de los 70, cuando la Costa Oeste norteamericana seguía en plena ebullición creativa y las colinas de Hollywood eran el punto de encuentro de los más grandes músicos de aquel país. En 1972, este nativo de Detroit, en Michigan, lanzaba su disco de debut en solitario, mientras compartía aventuras con los Eagles, de quien fue un miembro más en la sombra. Souther con su nombre en el título tenía entre sus temas este “How Long” que ni los Eagles pudieron olvidar, convirtiéndose en single de anticipo de su último trabajo, el doble álbum Long Road Out Of Eden. Así lo recordó el propio Glenn Frey para los oyentes de TOMA UNO. John David Souther formó Longbranch/Pennywhistle con su amigo Glen Frey antes de componer con él y Don Henley algunos de los temas más relevantes de la primera etapa de los Eagles, con quienes le relacionan muy directamente. Por entonces, su vecino era un tal Jackson Browne, que le presentó a David Geffen, que acababa de crear un sello discográfico llamado Asylum Records. Este escuchó algunas de sus canciones y le invitó a grabar un álbum. También hemos querido escuchar al propio Souther en 1973 cantando “Doolin’ Dalton”, un tema cuya autoría compartió con Don Henley, Glenn Frey y Jackson Browne, considerado como uno de los puntos álgidos del segundo álbum de los Eagles, Desperado, grabado en los estudios londinenses de Island con la producción de Glynn Johns. Aquel proyecto bien puede ser considerado como conceptual, al estar centrado en los forajidos del viejo Oeste. De hecho, el director Sam Peckinpah pensó en convertirlo en un filme de cowboys. Cinco años después de aquel primer álbum llegó Black Rose, con una lujosa producción del británico Peter Asher, antiguo miembro de Peter & Gordon, 10 nuevas canciones propias y una lista de colaboradores espectacular en la que encontramos a Lowell George, Joe Walsh, Waddy Wachtel, Jim Keltner, Andrew Gold, Russ Kunkel, Donald Byrd y Stanley Clarke, además de a David Crosby, Art Garfunkel, Don Henley y Glen Frey, que añadiendo sus voces. Tras su debut discográfico, y aunque su reputación como compositor iba creciendo y eran muchos los amigos y colegas que le pedían material, John David Souther trabajó con Chris Hillman y Richie Furay en un proyecto conjunto llamado The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. En el primero de los dos álbumes que grabaron se encontraba “Border Town”, que hoy podemos escuchar en su maqueta original. Aunque nació en Detroit, se crio en la tejana ciudad de Amarillo, y recibió sus primeras influencias musicales de un artista de Texas tan fundamental como Roy Orbison. On Episode 119, I'm joined by singer-songwriter Jaime Wyatt, who released her excellent full-length album, Neon Cross, this past May. So much of Neon Cross is shaped by Wyatt's time living out in Los Angeles and coming to terms with addiction, relapse, & eventually, her current sobriety. There most certainly is heartache, grief, and self-loathing throughout Neon Cross, but Wyatt's strength, beauty, grit, and humanity are often shining beacons within the midst of that hazy fog as well. Throughout, Wyatt is as genuine a storyteller as they come, often mixing in that grief and heartache with tongue-in-cheek winks, gems of wisdom, and moments of clarity, hope, and resolve. La Neal Casal Music Foundation (NCMF) está trabajando en la edición para el próximo año 2021 de un doble álbum y triple vinilo llamado Highway Butterfly: The Songs Of Neal Casal en el que participan una treintena de músicos como Jaime Wyatt, Marcus King, Shooter Jennings, Warren Haynes, Phil Lesh, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Zephaniah OHora, Aaron Lee Tasjan o Billy Strings. Precisamente este último junto a Circles Around The Sun ha grabado “All The Luck In The World”, que en 2001 formó parte del álbum Rain, Wind And Speed del ya mítico artista de Nueva Jersey. El vocalista Eric Burton y el guitarrista Adrian Quesada formaron Black Pumas hace tres años y en el pasado 2019 publicaron su disco de debut con el nombre del dúo como título, siendo nominados al Grammy como Mejor Nuevo Artista. Quesada había formado parte del Grupo Fantasma, una banda de toques latinos, con la que ya ganó un gramófono dorado hace 10 años. Se encontraron en Austin, Texas, y decidieron aunar fuerzas como Black Pumas y moverse en el terreno de la Americana. La semana pasada, a punto de cumplirse el primer aniversario de aquel álbum, el dúo lanzó su versión de “Fast Car”, un clásico de Tracy Chapman que en 1988 nos hizo reflexionar sobre nuestra lucha diaria por que valga la pena vivir. Mary Chapin Carpenter ha sido desde siempre una de nuestras contadoras de historias favoritas y nos encanta poder escuchar un adelanto de su nuevo trabajo, The Dirt And The Stars. Producido de nuevo por Ethan Johns, ha sido grabado una vez más completamente en vivo en los Estudios Real World de Peter Gabriel en Bath, al suroeste de Inglaterra, un lugar perfecto para reflexionar sobre momentos personales e íntimos, algo que Mary Chapin hizo en su casa de Virginia antes de la cuarentena. “Between The Dirt And The Stars”, que es la pieza sobre la que gira el proyecto, recubierta de nostalgia por los días de la adolescencia, un tiempo en el que la vida se podía resumir con “Wild Horses” sonando en la radio. Rodeada de algunos de los nombres fundamentales de esa perpetua introspección en el estilo, como Larry Cordle, Brennen Leigh, Lesley Satcher, Jerry Salley, Jon Randall e incluso la joven Ashley Campbell, estamos ante uno de los discos más recomendables de este año. Para cerrar un trabajo perfectamente armonizado, Tessy ha escogido “Pathway Of Teardrops”, un tema legendario que han grabado desde Webb Pierce –su compositor junto a Wayne Walker- a los Osborne Brothers, pasando por K.T. Oslin, Rhonda Vincent o Alison Krauss, y que la joven artista de Montana conoció a través de New Monday, el supergrupo que forman Val Storey, Larry Cordle y Carl Jackson. Supone una apuesta formal por la vuelta más respetuosa a las raíces. Para despedir a la Americana en esta semana y emplazarlos para la próxima, hemos preferido a Margo Price con “Drifter”, un tema inédito de las sesiones de grabación de su nuevo álbum, That’s How Rumors Get Started. Episode 132: The timing was right to split the hour between two exceptional emerging artists making hard country music in the outlaw tradition. As you'll hear, Jesse Daniel and Jaime Wyatt have lived the life, paid the price and processed their pain and redemption in song. Both are products of the West Coast and both have dug deep into their own stories. Many are sizing up Daniel's 'Rollin' On' and Wyatt's 'Neon Cross' (produced by Shooter Jennings) as among the cream of 2020. These are candid, complimentary conversations. 

El 6 de junio de 1980, hace 40 años, se publicaba la banda sonora de la película Urban Cowboy, un día después del estreno de la cinta en Houston, Texas. Urban Cowboy fue dirigida por James Bridges y contaba una relación amor/odio entre "Bud" (John Travolta) y Sissy (Debra Winger) teniendo como punto de encuentro el Gilley's Club, sin ninguna duda, el honky tonk más grande del mundo, abierto en Pasadena, Texas, en 1971 por Mickey Gilley y Sherwood Cryer. El complejo tenía una capacidad de 7,000 personas, repartidas por distintos bares, pistas de baile, escenarios, toro mecánico e incluso rodeo. Aquella película dio origen al llamado Urban Cowboy Movement, que otros relacionaron con el neo-Country o el hill boogie. Su banda sonora fue pieza clave de su éxito, una buena parte de las 18 canciones de su doble LP se incluyeron en el Top 10 de singles de country y otros llegaron a la cima de las listas. Hoy vamos a recordar aquellos momentos. El guión de Urban Cowboy está basado en la historia de amor real de dos clientes habituales de Gilley, Dew Westbrook y Betty Helmer, de los que el periodista Aaron Latham había escrito en la revista Esquire un reportaje titulado "The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit". El director de cine James Bridges y Latham lo convirtieron en un guión y Paramount eligió a una estrella en ascenso como Debra Winger (a quien recordaréis no hace mucho en la serie de televisión The Ranch) en el papel de Sissy, y a John Travolta (que había tenido un enorme éxito en Saturday Night Fever y Grease) para interpretar a Bud Davis. Aquella banda sonora se abría con “Hello Texas”, un tema compuesto expresamente para la película, que Jimmy Buffett interpretó al margen de sus grabaciones habituales de entonces, que el músico de Mississippi ya denominaba "rock and roll caribeño", aunque también suele usar el término "Gulf & Western”. Musicalmente, Johnny Lee fue uno de los grandes protagonistas de la banda sonora de Urban Cowboy. Nativo de Texas City, creció en una granja de Alta Loma, también en el Estado de la Estrella Solitaria escuchando a Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis y Chuck Berry, formando una banda de rock'n'roll durante sus años escolares en Santa Fe llamada Johnny Lee & The Roadrunners, con la que ganó distintos concursos locales. Johnny Lee se convirtió en toda una sorpresa. Apareció en la cinta, y dos de sus canciones se incluyeron en la banda sonora. "Lookin' For Love", el tema central que él interpretaba, llegó a la cima de las listas de pop y country en aquel mismo año y vendió más de un millón de copias. Es posible que el Gilley's fuera al country lo que Studio 54 en Nueva York fue a la disco music. Lo que nadie puede negar es que con aquel local se sentaron las bases para la aparición de otros clubes tejanos y más allá, incluidos el Billy Bob's Texas de Fort Worth (fundado al año siguiente del éxito de la película) y el Cowboys Dancehall de San Antonio (inaugurado en el 98). Los clientes habituales, conocidos como "Gilly Rats", hicieron de Gilley’s una especie de familia, aunque no era precisamente un lugar familiar. La producción de Urban Cowboy corrió a cargo de Irving Azoff, un manager de artistas como REO Speedwagon y Dan Fogelberg que adquirió solvencia en la industria musical por su estrecha relación con los Eagles. Fue fundador de Full Moon y Giant Records e influyó muy directamente en la selección de artistas para la banda sonora de la película, incluyendo a varios de sus representados. “Times Like These” la representación de Dan Fogelberg. Al año siguiente, la canción formaría parte del doble álbum The Innocent Age del músico de Illinois, posiblemente el trabajo más reconocido de su carrera. En el tema, Fogelberg tocaba todos los instrumentos excepto la batería, que estuvo en manos de Russ Kunkel. Ninguna película influyó en el country como lo hizo Urban Cowboy, ni siquiera Pure Country con George Strait a comienzos de los 90. Y ningún otro club lo hizo tanto como Gilley’s. En cierta manera, Urban Cowboy capturó el espíritu de la vida nocturna que una parte de los americanos anhelaba. Las botas vaqueras, los sombreros y las grandes hebillas se pusieron de moda… y es algo que todavía se mantiene, habiendo saltado fronteras. El presente nos cita con Margo Price que en la primavera de 2018 estuvo actuando durante tres noches en la llamada “Mother Church of Country Music”, el mítico Ryman Auditorium de Nashville y ahora ha publicado por sorpresa una selección de 11 cortes tomados de aquellos conciertos en el álbum Perfectly Imperfect at the Ryman, muy pocas fechas antes de lanzar su nuevo disco de estudio, That’s How Rumors Get Started. Durante aquellas fechas, la artista tuvo invitados como Jack White, Sturgill Simpson –que ha producido su nuevo álbum- y Emmylou Harris, con la que cantó a dúo en esta versión a “Wild Women”, que originalmente formó parte de All American Made, el segundo trabajo de Margo Price en 2017 con esta combinación de twang tejano, country de Nashville y soul de Memphis. Neon Cross ha fortalecido la carrera de Jaime Wyatt y ha afianzado la personalidad de la artista californiana. La producción tan afinada de Shooter Jennings ha reforzado sus propuestas sonoras para contar sus luchas reales contra el dolor, la adicción y la aceptación de su sexualidad. Esto último se refleja en "Rattlesnake Girl", arropado en ciertos elementos cercanos a la psicodelia. Cantar, como hace Jaime, sobre su orientación sexual no es algo que se aborde con frecuencia en la country music, por lo que escucharlo de una mujer que aún está despegando en ese género resulta audaz y emotivo. Kathryn Legendre nació en la tejana Helotes y se ha localizado en la escena de Austin con el mejor espíritu del honky tonk. Debutó en 2013 y por el momento suma álbum y un par de EPs hasta la aparición de su más reciente novedad, "One Long Sad Song", cambiando el enfoque para perfeccionar su forma de componer canciones mientras el mundo viaja por extrañas carreteras. Kathryn Legendre casi nunca ha seguido las tendencias que se suponen y sus influencias conectan con los modos de componer de Guy Clark o Merle Haggard, y filtra también las maneras de contar historias de Loretta Lynn, Bonnie Raitt o Linda Ronstadt. Un Ep y dos álbumes es el cargamento sonoro de The Golden Roses, una formación con sede en la tejana Austin, que en Smell The Roses al que da nombre genérico esta canción, cantan a sus experiencias basándose en sus propias influencias en las que hay espacio para el country, el bluegrass, Western swing y algo de rock 'n roll, todo ello filtrado por locales emblemáticos como el Broken Spoke y de forma muy especial el Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon, donde aprendieron casi todo lo que saben. “Smell The Roses” ha contado con Zachary Moulton de Mike and the Moonpies como invitado en la Steel guitar. Mike & The Moonpies se han refugiado en Touch of You- The Lost Songs of Gary Stewart, un álbum de canciones inéditas del músico de Jenkins, en el Condado de Letcher, en Kentucky, que habría cumplido 76 años el pasado jueves de no haberse suicidado en diciembre de 2003, unas semanas después de que su mujer muriera de neumonía. Jamie Lin Wilson, Courtney Patton y Zac Wilkerson son algunos de los invitados en esta aventura, además de un dúo con Mark Wystrach de Midland en “Smooth Shot of Whiskey”, una canción que el artista desaparecido compuso con Dean Dillon y Frank Dycus y que quedó fuera de un EP de Dillon y Gary Stewart que en principio era un proyecto más amplio. Midland tomó su nombre de una canción de Dwight Yoakam como "Fair to Midland", que apareció en 2003 en su álbum Population Me. Ahora también han jugado con el título de un Lp tan emblemático del músico de Kentucky como Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc. para dar nombre a un nuevo EP, con algunas versiones acústicas de sus canciones más conocidas, que han llamado Guitars, Couches, Etc., Etc. La grabación se hizo durante la cuarentena desde las casas de sus tres miembros. "Fourteen Gears" trata sobre un camionero que piensa amor especial mientras usa los "14 engranajes" de su Peterbilt (una marca de camiones de gran tonelaje) para "volver a tenerla” en sus brazos. Es una canción llena de nostalgia sobre conductores de esos trucks de 18 ruedas. Siempre hay que dar gracias por buenos amigos, el amor verdadero, los pueblos pequeños, la cerveza fría y un par de botas gastadas. Eso hace la Josh Abbott Band en su nueva canción, “The Luckiest”, donde tiene tiene un buen recuerdo hacia “King George”, es decir George Strait, por seguir haciendo discos de country. La banda de Lubbock afincada en Austin ha superado con creces la personalización en Josh Abbott y ha dirigido sus esfuerzos a profundizar en los sonidos del Lone Star State, sin perder la conexión con la tradición. Sus canciones suelen tener una carga de positividad, como en este caso, y detallan la cotidianeidad de las pequeñas ciudades de ese inmenso estado, con sus romances, sus problemas y sus inquietudes personales. Hoy queremos empezar nuestro programa reconociendo la labor de la comunidad musical en estos momentos difíciles. Nosotros vamos a inclinarnos hacia nuestros géneros favoritos y vamos a cruzar el Atlántico para asistir virtualmente a conciertos sin público que se hacen virales gracias de las redes sociales. De esta forma podemos compartir, por ejemplo, los sonidos de Brad Paisley y su banda al completo. El pasado viernes día 15, reunió a su banda habitual en un mismo escenario de un amplio local de ensayo en Nashville y dio un concierto en vivo sin público como parte de las llamadas Seltzer Sessions de una popular marca de cerveza. Así ocurrió con “American Saturday Night” y "Country Nation" dando una imagen de la diversidad de culturas que conforman los Estados Unidos y una forma de aceptación de los inmigrantes. Como sorpresa, Brad Paisley quiso recordar una de las canciones más populares de la carrera en solitario de Don Henley, con esta versión a “The Boys Of Summer” que formó parte en 1984 de Building the Perfect Beast, el segundo álbum del músico tejano en el que participaron varios de los miembros de los Heartbreakers de Tom Petty. De hecho el guitarrista Mike Campbell tenía una maqueta de la música que Petty no vio oportuna para Southern Accents, en disco en el que el grupo estaba trabajando. Se la enseñó a Henley y este le puso una letra nostálgica sobre el paso de la juventud a la mediana edad y el recuerdo del pasado. Lady Antebellum fueron los teloneros de este concierto del pasado día 15 que tuvo a Brad Paisley como cabeza de cartel. El trío de Nashville mantuvo el mismo formato, con banda completa y una distancia física de un par de metros. Hicieron un recorrido por buena parte de sus canciones más populares, pero ya que hemos hablado de Tom Petty, sus miembros volvieron a mostrar su debilidad por el músico de Florida con una versión de “I Won’t Back Down”, un tema de Full Moon Fever, el primer disco en solitario de Petty en 1989. Randy Rogers y Wade Bowen acaban de publicar su álbum conjunto Hold My Beer, Vol 2 y decidieron hacer una presentación especial del disco con un concierto acústico en el legendario Cheatham Street Warehouse de la tejana San Marcos donde la Randy Rogers Band grabó su disco de debut hace 20 años y que su líder compró hace tres años. En ese repaso por las nuevas canciones está “Rhinestoned”, que la pareja dice que es su favorita del álbum. Compuesta por Lori McKenna, Ryan Beaver y Ashley Ray, es una especia de oda a la country music de la vieja escuela, con homenajes a leyendas del g´nero como Hank Williams Sr. o George Jones. Las ofertas para mantener unidos a los seguidores a través de las redes sociales siguen dejando momentos mágicos. El batería de Aaron Watson, Nate Coon, tuvo la idea de hacer unas "Home Room Sessions" desde antes del aislamiento obligado y, por supuesto lo ha mantenido con la llegada de la pandemia. De esta forma nos hemos encontrado con Wade Bowen como invitado especial haciendo una versión sorprendente de “Somebody’s Baby”, un tema que Jackson Browne compuso junto a Danny Kortchmar para la banda sonora de la película de Fast Times at Ridgemont High, que aquí se tituló Aquel excitante curso y fue protagonizada por Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh y Judge Reinhold. La canción no se incluyó en ningún álbum oficial del artista, apareciendo en diferentes recopilatorios de éxitos. El siempre inquieto Ketch Secor, líder de Old Crow Medicine, acaba de regalarnos una nueva canción muy de estos tiempos y la ha titulado precisamente "Quarantined", como una forma de alegrar las dos semanas de cuarentena que te impiden tan siquiera un abrazo. Grabada en el Hartland Studios de la Nashville, "Quarantined" es la continuación en cuanto a novedad a "Nashville Rising", lanzada en abril para recaudar fondos para víctimas del tornado sufrido por Music City a través del Fondo de Respuesta a Emergencias de la Fundación Comunitaria de Middle Tennessee. Esta vez, Secor está acompañado por cuatro de los miembros de Old Crow Medicine Show y por la guitarra acústica de Molly Tuttle. Garth Brooks también ha querido colaborar a paliar en cierta forma la espera de su nuevo registro, Fun, que continúa alargándose, y nos ha dejado un par de adelantos como es el caso de “That’s What Cowboys Do”, una canción de corte clásico dentro de la country music que supera con creces el nivel de las que se escuchan en las emisoras de radio del estilo, con una superproducción que suele desmerecer los resultados. Por sorpresa, Margo Price ha publicado este pasado jueves Perfectly Imperfect at the Ryman, una colección de canciones grabadas a lo largo de las tres noches de conciertos en el Ryman Auditorium de Nashville en la primavera de 2018. Las 11 canciones nos dejan momentos tan especiales como las apariciones de Jack White, Emmylou Harris y Sturgill Simpson, que ha producido el nuevo álbum de estudio de la artista de Aledo, Illinois, That’s How Rumors Get Started, cuya fecha de lanzamiento se ha retrasado hasta el próximo verano debido a la pandemia del coronavirus, con una versión apasionante de “Ain’t Living Long Like This” que Rodney Crowell donde el músico de Kentucky demuestra su destreza con la guitarra. El próximo viernes aparece, por fin, Neon Croos, el nuevo trabajo de Jaime Wyatt que tiene ciertos tintes de renacimiento para la artista de la californiana Santa Monica, suponiendo pasar página con respecto a Felony Blues, publicado hace tres años. En este tiempo ha dejado sus adicciones y se ha acercado a sus amigos y a su familia, encontrando una identidad renovada que quiere compartir en este álbum. “Goodbye Queen” tiene que ver con sus relaciones fallidas y es una especie de libro abierto para declarar su recuperación y como considera que perdió el tiempo estando en el armario sin declarar sus inclinaciones sexuales. La naturalidad de una voz femenina interpretando sin impostura ni aditivos innecesarios un texto de un trovador tan personal como Mickey Newbury no parecía muy previsible. Pero ha llegado Gretchen Peters, una de las cantautoras más apreciadas de estos tiempos, además de haber escrito éxitos para docenas de artistas especialmente en el terreno del y, debido a su éxito, ser miembro del Salón de la Fama de los Compositores de Nashville. La veterana artista de Bronxville, en Nueva York, acaba de publicar The Night You Wrote That Song: The Songs of Mickey Newbury en el que ha hecho suyas narraciones de la experiencia humana en su forma más vulnerable. Al final de los 60 e inicio de la década de los 70, el tejano nos dejó las mejores grabaciones de su carrera, comenzando con Looks Like Rain en 1969, un álbum en el que se encontraba “San Francisco Mabel Joy”, un tema que cuenta las experiencias californianas de un muchacho de Georgia. El martes pasado Mickey Newbury debía haber cumplido 80 años. Milton Sims Newbury Jr. fue un tejano de Houston que se marchó a Nashville en los años 60 para convertirse en escritor de la compañía Acuff‑Rose. Sus canciones han sido grabadas por artistas de la categoría de Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers o Kris Kristofferson, entre otros muchos. Esta última se convirtió en la gran joya de su primer álbum, Frisco Mabel Joy, publicado en 1971. En realidad era un medley de tres canciones de la Guerra Civil Americana ("Dixie", "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" y "All My Trials"). Con su más reciente álbum, Early Morning Rain, Steve Forbert ha querido que la gente renueve su aprecio por la artesanía musical que suponen las 11 canciones seleccionadas por el artista de Mississippi, encuadradas en el folk y el rock y con una exquisita diversidad. Desde un trovador como Gordon Lightfoot, de quien ha tomado el nombre genérico del álbum, hasta Elton John, pasando por Danny O’Keefe, los Kinks o la sorpresa de escuchar “Box oF Rain” que compusieron Phil Lesh y Robert Hunter para el colosal American Beauty de Grateful Dead hace medio siglo, Steve Forbert se recrea en canciones que han sido emblema de varias generaciones. En el caso de “Box Of Rain”, los músicos elegidos por Forbert han propuesto un ritmo más acelerado que el original, recordando en ocasiones las viejas grabaciones de bandas como Poco, con el exquisito protagonismo de la guitarra y el Steel guitar. Por suerte, esta situación excepcional no ha impedido que podamos compartir nuevas propuestas sonoras de algunos de nuestros artistas favoritos de la escena de la Americana. De esta forma, Will Hoge nos regala un nuevo álbum, Tiny Little Movies, para finales del próximo mes de junio. Este trabajo tiene sonidos que recuerdan los himnos de Tom Petty, la crudeza de los Stones y la brillantez del timbre vocal de Buck Owens. Además, las letras de este nativo de Nashville siguen teniendo un poderío narrativo incalculable. "The Curse" es su adelanto. Grabado en los East Iris Studios de Music City junto a su banda de acompañamiento habitual, resalta la química que existe entre todos ellos. Lamentations ha pasado a ser la más reciente propuesta de American Aquarium. Su título está inspirado en el Libro de las Lamentaciones del Viejo Testamento y el álbum trata precisamente sobre todo aquello que nos destroza y a su vez nos prueba en nuestra fe en los demás y en nosotros mismos. Las canciones hablan de la pérdida de un ser querido, las adicciones, las separaciones, la ruina financiera o los vicios". BJ Barham envió varias maquetas de aquellas composiciones a Soother Jennings y este empezó a trabajar con ellas. La banda se reunió en Los Angeles, a la sombra de Laurel Canyon, y surgió un trabajo mucho más esperanzador y brillante de lo que se presuponía. Así ocurre, por ejemplo, en “Stars With You” con versos como "Las canciones tristes son lo único que me hace feliz". Un tema poderoso con ecos evidentes de Tom Petty. En las últimas semanas hemos ido conociendo el nuevo disco de Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Reunion, donde un tema de la categoría de "Dreamsicle" destaca sobre una altísima media. Con la guitarra acústica y el piano como rasgos fundamentales de su envoltorio sonoro, esta vez, Jason Isbell canta desde la perspectiva de un chaval de 14 años que atraviesa tiempos difíciles. Y fantasea con el futuro cuando pueda independizarse. Drive-By Truckers no han dejado de trabajar a pesar del aislamiento imprescindible debido a la pandemia, y de manera muy especial Patterson Hood, que compuso una canción como “Quarantine Together” en los primeros días de confinamiento y compartió la maqueta con el resto de la banda. Ellos grabaron su parte y David Barbe se encargó de hacer la mezcla. Es un tema de amor que propone ponerse en cuarentena juntos y, por el contrario, ser miserables solos. Todo con toques acústicos y un ambiente placentero y relajado. Hablan de su último álbum, el octavo de su carrera, como de una obra maestra del gótico sureño. Se trata de Caleb Caudle y su Better Hurry Up, un trabajo que se generó en la mítica Cash Cabin tres días después de mudarse a Nashville el pasado año desde su natal Carolina del Norte. Un artista que como él creció en las estribaciones de los Apalaches y que siempre ha tenido a Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Little Feat o The Band como referentes, tenía que acogerse a músicos que coincidieran con sus raíces. De esta forma, en este octavo álbum de Caudle han coincidido el productor John Jackson y Elizabeth Cook, John Paul White, Courtney Marie Andrews o Gary Louris. Aquellas sesiones han resultado perfectas para que las canciones se oscurezcan, se empapen a veces de whisky y resistan un viaje por carreteras secundarias a través del corazón de su país en estos tiempos. “Front Porch” es contundente a pesar de lo sutil de su bella melodía. La capacidad de Daniel Romano para crear está por encima de toda duda y la de conformar todo ello en nuevas grabaciones supera lo esperado. Su más reciente entrega supone el cuarto álbum del artista canadiense en lo que llevamos de año 2020, todos ellos con una calidad suprema. Se trata de Content to Point the Way, grabado con The Outfit, su banda de acompañamiento, con un regreso de tintes sentimentales y decididos al country, destacando sobre una selección magnífica “Diamonds And Dogs”, con Gram Parsons y Emmylou Harris en el horizonte gracias a la intervención vocal de Julianna Riolino con una atmósfera llena de melancolía. Dentro de poco menos de un mes estará publicado Mountain Standard Time, el nuevo proyecto de Chris Roberts, uno de los más refutados miembros de la comunidad musical de Nashville, desde sus facetas de compositor, vocalista y productor. Ha sido responsable de musicales, autor de canciones de éxito, colaborador con a artistas de prestigio e incluso se ha aventurado en la creación de bandas sonoras cinematográficas. Pero el bluegrass es una de sus debilidades y para este nuevo álbum vez ha querido llevar a ese terreno canciones tan deliciosas como “Right On Time”, cuya composición ha compartido con Mike Reid. Una guitarra acústica, réplica de la legendaria Martin de Clarence White que heredó el enorme Tony Rice, mandolina y mandocello, dobro, banjo, guitarra barítono de 8 cuerdas y contrabajo... todo ello puesto en manos de Ramón Arroyo, que ha incorporado su voz, pocas veces escuchada, para rendir homenaje a John Prine con esta versión de “Paradise”, que el artista recientemente desaparecido compuso para su padre y formó parte de su álbum de debut en 1971. Ramón Arroyo, al que casi todo el mundo conoce como miembro de Los Secretos, pero que tiene una larga andadura en proyectos muy diversos, desde aquellos legendarios Flying Gallardos, pasando por multitud de colaboraciones y apariciones en directo, hasta llegar a Roadrunners junto a su gran amigo Jeff Espinoza. Ojalá que Ramón se anime definitivamente a explorar esos caminos como solista aunque, seguro, estará rodeado de todos esos amigos a los que ha acompañado tantas veces. Esta vez nuestro viaje sonoro nos lleva hasta Winchester, en Virginia, para encontrarnos con Gina Furtado, que conformó su propia aventura tras dejar a Chris Jones & The Night Drivers. Gina, que era conocida como Gina Clowes, decidió recuperar su apellido de soltera y fundó The Gina Furtado Project. Sus formas combinan el bluegrass y el swing, con su experiencia como banjista y la incorporación de su hermana, Malia Furtado al violín, Drew Matulich en la guitarra y Max Johnson al contrabajo. “The Things I Saw” tiene que ver con su infancia en las orillas del río Shenandoah. De nuevo encontramos un ambiente natural, acogedor y familiar que supone su primera grabación desde la publicación del álbum I Hope You Have a Good Life en el pasado 2019. Hace unos días, Sunny Sweeney compartía una nueva canción en sus redes sociales. Era "Poet's Prayer", grabada en Nashville y donde echa de menos a los amigos y a sus seguidores, que suelen viajar durante horas para asistir a sus conciertos y encontrar el poder en una canción. Una mujer como ella, nativa de Houston y crecida en la escena de los bares tejanos, con su gente cerca, a la que siempre tiene muy presente en sus canciones, llenas de guiños y con un toque de humor, no puede por menos que esperanzarse con volver a la carretera lo antes posible. Desde la publicación hace tres años de su álbum Trophy, no sabíamos nada nuevo de Sunny Sweeney, excepto su dúo con Randy Rogers en "Between You and Me" para el álbum Dreamer: A Tribute to Kent Finlay, editado a primeros de 2016. En su nuevo álbum Neon Cross, sin duda el mejor de su carrera, Jaime Wyatt ha logrado compartir abiertamente su verdad, con la importancia que tiene todo ello en una mujer con traumáticas experiencias personales desde muy joven. Y eso que tiene tan solo 34 años. La producción de Shooter Jennings ha dotado a este disco de la exuberancia que parecería resistirse a unos textos tan personales y llenos de altibajos como la historia de la propia Jaime Wyatt. Neon Cross es el mejor ejemplo del Outlaw country por parte de una mujer que compuso “By Your Side” tras perder a dos personas muy importantes en su vida, como su padre y su querido amigo Anthony Agosti. Es una canción sobre el dolor y, a la vez, sobre el intento de comprender y reponerse a situaciones así. Escuchar audio

Los sábados y domingos seguimos con las botas puestas a las 13:00 horas y nos unimos a la programación especial de Radio 3. El pasado fin de semana programamos un par de sesiones que puedes encontrar en nuestro blog y en nuestros podcasts, pero vamos a procurar que todo suene como siempre Queremos que te quedes en casa con nosotros y que el aperitivo sonoro del sábado y domingo sea como siempre… o mejor. El pasado viernes, día 20, sabíamos de la muerte del tejano de Houston Kenny Rogers por causas naturales. Había empezado haciendo doo-wop antes de un primer intento como solista con el nombre de Kenneth Ray Rogers The First. También tocó jazz y después de algunos otros intentos ingresó en los New Christy Minstrels, uno de los grupos vocales de folk más brillantes. Con algunos de sus miembros capitaneó The First Edition. En su cuarto álbum, que titularon Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town), encontramos una canción de cierre como “Reuben James", que hoy abre nuestro espacio. La compusieron Alex Harvey y Barry Etris y los aficionados más cercanos al country clásico recordarán por la versión de Conway Twitty un año más tarde. Diez años después de aquel disco, en 1979, un álbum de Kenny Rogers se convertiría en uno de los más influyentes del country. Su nombre era tan simple como Kenny, pero en aquel trabajo se incluyó "The Gambler" y fue el gran álbum de aquella temporada, aunque apareció al final del año anterior. Su tema central, “The Gambler”, daría origen a una película de televisión protagonizada también por Kenny Rogers y significó su primer acercamiento al cine. Consiguió dos Grammy y también fue su gran éxito en España. Incluso son muchos los que consideran esta canción como la más representativa en la historia de la country music. The First Edition antepuso el nombre de Kenny Rogers tras el éxito de una canción que seguro que recuerdas: "Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town)". En un principio cerró el álbum The First Edition ’69 pero tras su éxito en Estados Unidos, Canadá y Gran Bretaña fue la apertura y el tema central de su cuarto registro en aquel mismo año, además de convertirse en su canción de enganche, contando la historia de un veterano de la guerra del Vietnam que ve indefenso en su silla de ruedas como su mujer sale por la noche sin él. Tras siete años de trabajo conjunto, se separaron en el 74 y un año más tarde Kenny Rogers firmó con United Artists como cantante solista comenzando una carrera legendaria. Después de un par de intentos con otros tantos singles, Kenny Rogers editó "Lucille", la historia de un encuentro fugaz en un bar de Toledo, Ohio, con una mujer infiel. Con aquella canción logró su primer No.1 en la primavera de 1977, vendiendo un millón de copias y siendo declarado mejor single de country de la temporada por la CMA y la ACM además de ganar su primer premio Grammy, previos a la edición del álbum Kenny Rogers. Curiosamente, la madre de Kenny también se llamaba Lucille. “Coward Of The County” fue el tema estrella de Kenny, el álbum que continuó a The Gambler. Aquella canción habla de Tommy, un joven que inspirado por su padre, que murió en prisión y le pidió que no cometiera sus errores, era apodado en el condado “Yellow” por su actitud siempre pacífica. Pero cuando Becky, su pareja, es violada por los hermanos Gatlin entiende que no puede ignorarlo, va al bar que estos frecuentan y no deja a ninguno de los tres en pie. Tommy espera que su padre comprenda que hizo todo lo posible para evitarlo, pero que, a veces, tienes que pelear. Trístemente, las malas noticias no desaparecieron de la escena campera y el pasado domingo moría el neoyorquino Eric Weissberg a consecuencia del Alzheimer. Tenía 80 años y fue uno de los más apreciados banjistas de la historia. Esta versión junto a Steve Mandell del clásico de Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith "Feudin' Banjos", se convirtió en "Dueling Banjos" para la banda sonora de la película Deliverance, que puso en el mapa de las grandes audiencias un estilo tan enraizado como bluegrass en aquel año. El cine y un estilo musical tan enraizado como el bluegrass han estado muy unidos a lo largo de varias décadas, aunque es muy posible que a nosotros nos haya pasado bastante inadvertido. Si recordamos la película de 1972 Deliverance, que aquí llegó a titularse Defensa, con Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty y Ronny Cox, nos vendrá a la memoria una escena inolvidable con un duelo improvisado de guitarra y banjo entre el personaje que encarnaba este último actor y un chaval retrasado. Eric Weissberg se había iniciado en la escena del folk de Greenwich Village y fue un reputado músico de sesión. Una canción folclórica como "Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill" dio el nombre a los Tarriers, fundados en 1956 por Erik Darling, Alan Arkin y Bob Carey, (en un principio se llamaban los Tunetellers), que obtuvieron dos grandes éxitos en los años 56 y 57. Dieron a conocer el tema "The Banana Boat Song” y grabaron "Cindy, Oh Cindy" con Vince Martin en 1956. Un álbum como Gather ‘Round, grabado para Decca en 1964, el mismo año en que se separaron, nos permitió escuchar, con Eric Weissberg como banjista y vocalista, esta versión de "Pick a Bale of Cotton", una canción de trabajo que fue grabada por primera en los años 30 y después popularizó Leadbelly. Eric Weissberg tocó como músico de sesiones en un buen número de álbumes de Judy Collins y John Denver, además de en Piano Man (Billy Joel, 1973), Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan, 1974), Heroes (Tom Paxton, 1992) o Other Voices Too (Nanci Griffith, 1998). La historia de un militar que lucha contra su trastorno de estrés postraumático convierte “I’m Still Hanging On” en uno de los cortes más conmovedores de Years, el disco de regreso de John Anderson, arropado por Dan Auerbach, que le ha acogido en su propia discográfica, ha producido el álbum y ha colaborado en la composición de cortes como este, que sirve a apertura. Eso tinte de supervivencia también tiene que ver con el propio artista de Florida, que ha tenido distintos altibajos a lo largo de su carrera y que a nivel personal superó una grave crisis de salud mientras conformaba este registro. A pesar de las circunstancias, Willie Nelson sigue especialmente activo. Debido a la pandemia que nos azota, tuvo que variar la concepción de su encuentro anual Luck Reunion, un festival que celebra en su rancho de Luck, en Texas, previsto para la semana pasada. Lo convirtió en un concierto sin público en el que los artistas actuaban desde diferentes lugares con una mínima producción, consiguiendo un impacto muy superior al previsto. Ray Benson se convirtió en el anfitrión desde los Arlyn Studios de Austin, dando entrada, por ejemplo, a Tami Neilson desde una tienda de discos en Nueva Zelanda o a Paul Simon, Edie Brickell y su hija desde Hawai. Lucinda Williams tocó desde su casa, al igual que Margo Price y su marido, Jeremy Ivey, Neil Young hizo una aparición sorpresa… y Nikki Lane llegó tarde. Pero allí estaba Willie con sus hijos, Lukas y Micah Nelson. Neon Cross es el álbum de regreso de Jaime Wyatt y el primero para el sello New West, auspiciado por la producción de Shooter Jennings, un tipo en el que siempre se puede confiar. Saldrá al mercado a finales de mayo y supone la continuación a Felony Blues que hace tres años la trajo por primera vez a España. Jaime Wyatt is what you might imagine Otis Redding would sound like if he had been a young, attractive and talented female singer/songwriter. Her soulful voice leans on the same blue notes and husky timbre that gave Redding his distinctive and instantly recognizable style. Wyatt's timeless white woman blues also draws heavily from harder-rocking influences – she could just as easily slide into the arena rock shoes of original AC/DC front man Bon Scott - and fill them amply. But there is a bit of red dirt twang mixed into her songs as well, and this rust-colored rural influence lands Wyatt squarely in the Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris camp, and she can handle that yoke, too. It is hard to write a fresh blues-rock song this late in the game, but give a spin to her music and it will soon be evident that Wyatt knows her way around a song as well as around a bluesy melody. And if that's not enough, Wyatt is also a solid guitar player. Not a know-enough-chords-to-get-through-a-song-or-two guitar player, but a genuine, bona fide instrumentalist who will prop up a cowboy boot on a stage monitor and rip off a screaming solo right along side the boys in the band. Her new album, This is Jaime Wyatt, is due out in the fall of 2014 and you'll be able to find her on stages across the country, promoting it with raucous live shows that will leave no doubt that rock and roll is very much alive as long as Jaime Wyatt has a guitar in her hands.
