If you get lucky rolling your twelve-sided Flamingo dice today, you'll land on the best podcast about Derek and the Dominos and the 226th greatest album of all time, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Careful though, last time Catherine the Great rolled the 12-sided dice she ended up leaving quite the legacy that would make even Big and Rich blush.   Before we get to the album we hold our annual State of the Union celebrate great customer service and provide tips on the use of warm water that don't involve your dead-ass Christmas tree. We're also talking bad memory songs, reviewing the Kendrick Lamar halftime show, and breaking down Shania Twain's Any Man of Mine music video.   Then at (1:20:00) we tell the truth about Derek and the Dominos' only studio album. We discuss Eric Clapton's infatuation with George Harrison's wife, the piano coda on Layla, and the best Duane Allman guitar riffs.     Next week we're going to rip it up when we become the best Little Richard podcast and cover Here's Little Richard.

(Radio noises.... static.... beeps and boops)   I have a lament! This week's episode is like trying on a warm bathing suit at Target, kind of a bummer. It's also the best podcast about Wilco and the 225th greatest album of all time, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.   But before we get to the music, we're cracking open a 30-pack of Hamm's and talking about martial arts movies and the best James Bond. We also become the best podcast about video games when we cover Goldeneye, The Oregon Trail, and Drug Wars. Then we share some Eagles trivia, Gen Z kinks, and the best mini-bar snacks. We also experience a celebrity run-in, but we're playing it cool.   Then, at (54:00), we head to some poor places and cover Wilco's fourth studio album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. We discuss the documentary about the album, the beeps and boops all over it, and the best albums rejected by their initial record labels.   Next week, we'll ease your worried mind when we become the best Derek and the Dominos podcast when we cover Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs     (beeep booop Static noises)

Did you guys know the Beatles did drugs? IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE TITLE, MAN, LSDDDDDDDD! Inspired by a drawing done by his son Julia, John's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is arguably the most psychedelic of Beatles psychedelic songs. But that trippiness overshadows brilliantly musical performances and inventive production. It's one of the high points of The Beatles and George Martin (and his team) being on the same wavelength, all pulling in the same direction. Lucy (and her parent album) may have lost a touch of its' shine among the common listener, but listen with fresh ears and be blown away all over again. Joining us this week is the always fantastic Jason Kruppa, host of the Producing the Beatles podcast, co-author of All Things Must Pass Away: Harrison, Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs. He was supposed to join us via Zoom a couple of weeks ago (during the now famous New Orleans snow storm) but the recording set up at RTB HQ couldn't handle the cold and died on us. So we had to reschedule once we got back up and running, so we were able to connect in person, which was much better! We chat with Jason about the brilliance of the Beatles' vocals, isolation videos, Crocs, the importance of the drummer, and so much. more! All isolations in this episode provided by Jason. The songs were inspired by unrequited love, and the recording was the product of Eric Clapton and three American musicians all living together and jamming. When they were ready, they flew to Miami where, on a night off, Clapton saw Duane Allman play for the first time. And soon after, one of the greatest guitar duets in rock history took place. Randy Renaud has the story behind Derek & the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, released 54 years ago this weekend, on this week's edition of the Chronicles of Rock.

The Roarin' Twenties were in full swing and the stock market was reaching new record highs a hundred years ago when vaudevillian Jimmy Cox wrote his cautionary tale about the fickleness of fortune and friendship.“Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was copyrighted in 1923, but it was another four years before the first known publication appeared, with the 1927 recording by a little known jazzman named Bobby Leecan. Two others — an obscure vocal quartet called The Aunt Jemima Novelty Four and boogie-woogie pianist Pinetop Smith — also gave it a spin, but it was Bessie Smith's rendition in 1929 that made the song legendary.Predicting the FutureAs noted here earlier, Smith's treatment of the tune also was oddly prophetic. Columbia released Smith's record on Sept. 13, 1929. Two weeks earlier, The New York stock market had reached an all-time high; two weeks later, it took its most perilous plunge, beginning 10 years of The Great Depression. No song ever seemed more stunningly relevant than this one."Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" became one of Smith's biggest hits. In fact, the song was so identified with “The Empress of the Blues” that for another generation or so other female singers were reluctant to record it. By the 1950s, though, it was a blues standard. A version by Nina Simone reached No. 23 on Billboard's R&B charts. Odetta tackled it. So did Janis Joplin. Men also found the song a great vehicle. Louis Jordan and Josh White both had versions. So did Lead Belly and Eric Von Schmidt, Chad Mitchell, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. The Brit BitMeanwhile, in English, when Eric Clapton was an art student in the early 1960s, he was attracted to the finger-picking acoustic guitar-stylings of bluesman Big Bill Broonzy. "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" was one of the first songs Clapton learned to play that way.In 1970, he recorded a group version with his band Derek and the Dominos for the debut album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. (Also on that album, incidentally, on slide guitar, was Duane Allman, who also recorded the song with his brother Greg.)Our Take on the TuneSome nights are just magical, when everything we do — even this hundred-year-old song — seems suddenly fresh and new.Click here to check it out. Pattie Boyd is an English model, photographer, and an eyewitness to key moments in rock ‘n' roll history, particularly in terms of the lives and times of the former members of the Beatles, especially George Harrison. In 1962, Boyd began her modeling career, later appearing on the covers of Vogue and other leading magazines. In 1964, she met Harrison while working as an extra on the set of "A Hard Day's Night." After moving in together at Harrison's Kinfauns home in Esher, Boyd and Harrison married in January 1966. Boyd was a regular fixture in the Beatles' lives, attending the June 1967 Our World live simulcast and joining them in Rishikesh, India, for the group's February 1968 visit to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram. In 1970, Boyd and Harrison relocated to Friar Park, the former Beatle's enormous Victorian mansion in Henley-on-Thames. By 1973, the Harrisons' relationship was disintegrating. In 1974, the couple separated, with Boyd later marrying Harrison's longtime friend and collaborator Eric Clapton, who had nurtured a long-running passion for the model. Over the years, Harrison had written numerous songs for Boyd, including the top-charting Beatles hit “Something.” In 1970, Boyd was the subject of the legendary Derek and the Dominos' album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs." The album's title track describes Clapton's unrequited love for Boyd. Clapton later composed the Top 20 U.S. hit “Wonderful Tonight” with Boyd as his inspiration. In 2007, Boyd published her best-selling autobiography entitled "Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me." In 2022, she published her latest book, "Pattie Boyd: My Life in Pictures." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Susan Tedeschi co-partner with  Derek Trucks in life and music is our guest this week. We first talked to Susan in May when the first Moon album,  Crescent was released. This  is the rest of the story Tedeschi Trucks Band has created “one of those albums” that will become the standard by which all other such albums are created. It's an amazing story and we are thrilled to have Susan share it with us .  It's our complete 30-minute interview – with the tracks from the first album. The concept behind I Am The Moon, the GRAMMY-winning band's fifth studio recording, was suggested by TTB vocalist Mike Mattison in May 2020, two months after the band was forced off the road by the pandemic. The 12th-century poem Layla & Majnun by the Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi, was the title inspiration for Eric Clapton's 1970 double-LP with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs – an influential album for Tedeschi Trucks Band.  Interestingly,  Ganjavi's source material resonated with Mattison and the rest of the band in an altogether different way. Finding complex themes and storylines that inspired their creative process, they forged a new, modern interpretation of the vast 100-page poem. The thought that started the project was “Instead of Majnun,  lets see this story through Layla's eyes. Operatic in scope, Tedeschi Trucks Band explores romantic relationships, collective struggle, faith, and the human experience on I Am The Moon. “It's amazing,” Trucks says, “because we wrote most of this music in a pretty short time span. There are even chord changes that mirror other tunes on the albums – themes and variations, lyrical allusions, that pop back up.” He continues: “You always want to do something bigger and thematic. This is the first time it happened naturally.”   The decision to sequence and release I Am The Moon in four distinct episodes came “when we started thinking of records we love,” Derek says, citing Axis: Bold as Love, the 1967 LP by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. “It's 36 minutes long. That's the way to digest a record.” With that approach in mind, TTB will also present I Am The Moon: The Film, immersive visual companions to each album. The corresponding films will debut three days prior to each audio release, offering fans an early opportunity to digest each album in its entirety as a communal listening and viewing experience via the band's YouTube channel. Bobby was involved in three of the greatest rock albums ever made - George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street and, of course, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs from when he and Eric Clapton teamed up for Derek & The Dominos. Bobby discusses his own solo career, plus working with legends like Delaney & Bonnie, Steve Winwood, Duane Allman, "Duck" Dunne, and many more. In addition, an album was recently found by CCR drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford called California Gold which was a project he and Bobby did together in the late 70s, but never saw the light of day until now and it's amazing. Today Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is considered Eric Clapton's best work.  However, at the time that this double album debut by Derek and the Dominos came out it was considered both a commercial and critical failure.  Clapton met fellow Derek and the Dominos band members Bobby Whitlock (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums) when working with Delaney & Bonnie.  Whitlock and Clapton got together at Clapton's house and composed most of what would become the original songs on the Layla album. The name Derek and the Dominos was chosen by Eric Clapton because he was tired of the supergroup approach to music and did not want his fame to overshadow the band.  Derek and the Dominos played a lot of small clubs in England in August, then went to Miami to record the studio album. The group met up with Duane Allman in Miami, and Allman and Clapton struck up a close friendship from the start.  Allman would record on 11 of the 14 songs on the album. Most know that the song Layla was inspired by Clapton's infatuation with Pattie Boyd Harrison, George Harrison's wife.  In truth, many of the songs on the Layla album were performed with Pattie Boyd in mind.Unfortunately this double album is the only record these musicians would make together.  Clapton would struggle with drug addiction and depression for several years afterward, and Allman would die in a tragic accident in 1971.  The reputation of this album would grow over time, however, and is iconic today. Bell Bottom BluesThis song was the first single, and was written by Clapton and Whitlock.  The inspiration for the song was that Pattie Boyd had asked Clapton to get her a pair of bell-bottom blue jeans while he was in the United States.  It's Too LateThe album contains five covers including this blues song originally benned by Chuck Willis in 1956.  Clapton and Whitlock trade off on vocals, and guitar work is from Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.  The song would be performed on Derek and the Dominos' only TV appearance, on the Johnny Cash Show in January 1971.Why Does Love Got to Be So SadYou can hear a terrific jam between Clapton and Allman on guitar in this song.  It swings from A minor on the verses to D major on the chorus.  Whitlock and Clapton trade off vocal work.LaylaThis signature track was inspired by a 12th century tale called “The Story of Layla and Majnun.”  It is about a young man who falls hopelessly in love with a young girl only to be rebuffed by her father because of his obsession with her.  Clapton of course identified with the story of hopeless love because of his feelings toward Pattie Boyd Harrison. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Goodies”This offbeat comedy series premiered in the UK in this month. STAFF PICKS:Share the Land by the Guess WhoBrian starts off the staff picks with the title track from the Guess Who's seventh studio album, and the first after the departure of guitarist Randy Bachman.  The lyrics reflect the growing popularity of the environmental movement.  Burton Cummings wrote this song and sings lead.Cherryhill Park by Billy Joe RoyalWayne brings us a story song about a young girl named Mary Hill who “was a thrill after dark in Cherryhill Park.”  The thrills end when Mary Hill marries a rich man.  Billy Joe Royal was born in Valdosta, Georgia.Montego Bay by Bobby BloomRob finds an early reggae-influenced rock song.  Bobby Bloom and Jeff Berry wrote this one-hit wonder.  It made it to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Sadly, Bobby Bloom died in 1974 at the age of 28.Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed by 100 Proof (Aged in Soul)Bruce's staff pick comes from the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier Holland after they left Motown Records to set up a separate label.  This song about discovering evidence of infidelity went to number 8 on the US pop charts, and was 100 Proof's biggest hit INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Overture by the WhoIn the tradition of symphonic music, the Who began their rock opera Tommy with this overture.

Author and NPR critic Tim Riley is our guest to talk about his prolific career as a music critic, author of several books on rock history, his brand-new website and latest venture The Riley Rock Report: an audio newsletter which was launched in March. It builds on his book-length multimedia anthology of reviews due out in 2023 titled "Millennium Pop: Music Love & Squalor". Over 100 essays by Riley covering the past 40 years. Starting with the website we veer off into various discussions including older rock artists playing youthful music for older audiences. Who gets it right? Who doesn't? Is there an expiration date for rock and roll musicians? The state of rock and roll radio today, the recent rock bio movie craze, streaming services, the Beatles and what we get wrong about the John Lennon and Paul McCartney partnership. Also, Tim has some strong opinions on Bob Dylan's recent music. All of that before we wrap things up with Tim's brand-new digital project due out in 2023 that will take writing and reading about rock music to a new level. Tim Riley reviews pop and classical music for WBUR's widely syndicated “Here and Now and On Point”, and has written for the New York Times, truthdig, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, Slate, Salon, and many other publications. He was trained as a classical pianist at Oberlin College and Eastman School of Music. Since 2009, he has taught digital journalism at Emerson College in Boston. Brown University hosted Riley as its music critic-in-residence in 2008. His first book, “Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary” (Knopf/Vintage 1988), a critique of the Beatles' music, won praise from Jon Pareles of The New York Times for bringing “New insight to the act we've known for all these years.” The book established Riley as an author of rock history critiques. Susan Tedeschi co-partner with  Derek Trucks in life and music is our guest this week. Tedeschi Trucks Band has created “one of those albums” that will become the standard by which all other such albums are created. It's an amazing story and we are thrilled to have to share it with Susan. The 12th-century poem Layla & Majnun by Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi, was the title inspiration for Eric Clapton's 1970 double-LP with Derek and the Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs – an influential album for Tedeschi Trucks Band.  Interestingly,  Ganjavi's source material resonated with Mattison and the rest of the band in an altogether different way. Finding complex themes and storylines that inspired their creative process, they forged a new, modern interpretation of the vast 100-page poem. I Am The Moon was written collectively and collaboratively, with band members contributing their own unique perspectives on the work. By January 2021 the band was recording at Tedeschi and Trucks' home studio, Swamp Raga, in Jacksonville, FL, with Derek behind the soundboard as producer and long-time studio engineer, Bobby Tis, in charge of recording and mixing. Operatic in scope, Tedeschi Trucks Band explores romantic relationships, collective struggle, faith, and the human experience on I Am The Moon.

George Harrison and Eric Clapton: A Rock ‘n' Roll Friendship's Powerful Reverb The Smithsonian Associates Interview Series on Not Old Better Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates edition, on KSCW.  I'm Paul Vogelzang and it is so great to be with you following another excellent Community Chat with Gary Cohen.  We have a really neat show today here on KSCW, very fun and exciting, with our guests today, Beatles historians Kenneth Womack and Jason Kruppa.  We'll be talking about George Harrison, All Things Must Pass, Beatles music and Womack and Kruppa's new book about George Harrison and Eric Clapton, ‘Harrison and Clapton and other Assorted Love Songs'. Womack and Kruppa will appear via Zoom at Smithsonian Associates Dec 9, and for more details, please check out our web site notold-better.com for more details.  But, we have them today here on KSCW. The tumultuous friendship between George Harrison and Eric Clapton shaped not only their lives and careers but the shifting face of rock music in the early 1970s. Beatles expert Ken Womack and music historian Jason Kruppa explore the rock legends' musical and personal collaboration, friendship, and rivalry. They take a close look at the November 1970 releases of All Things Must Pass, Harrison's powerful emancipatory statement in the wake of the Beatles, and Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, Clapton's impassioned reimagining of his art while playing with Derek and the Dominos. These albums helped to push rock 'n' roll out of the dreamy idealism of the 1960s into the wild and expansive new reality of the 1970s.        Womack and Kruppa's multimedia presentation provides vivid details about the albums' creation, highlighting the production of one classic song after another. It also recalls a love triangle for the ages, involving Clapton, Harrison, and Harrison's wife Pattie Boyd. Please join me in welcoming to the Not Old Better Show on KSCW via internet phone, Kenneth Womack and Jason Kruppa. After an unintended, Hurricane-induced hiatus, we're back in action! And what better way to get the party started back up than by talking about..."Good Night"? The Ringo-sung, John-penned closer to the White Album has always been somewhat of a polarizing song in the Beatles' cannon. Some love it, some loathe it. Yet, like so many moments in the band's catalog, there's so much more at play here. Where else could a song this saccharine fit than after the audio soundtrack of a revolution? Who else but Ringo could sing something so sweet and soothing? But then again, isn't it rather twisted to end the journey of the White Album with a song like this? Is there maybe some darkness behind the Disney-esque sweetness at play? As always with the Beatles, there's many layers to this glass onion. To dive in this week, we're joined by Jason Kruppa, host of the fantastic Producing The Beatles podcast, and co-author of "All Things Must Pass Away: Harrison, Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs," which he wrote with previous guest Ken Womack (see #162 - "Another Girl"). Jason, who also lives here in New Orleans, joined us in RTB headquarters (before we all evacuated for the hurricane) to discuss the ins and outs and secrets of "Good Night," the never-ending wellspring of All Things Must Pass, George's favorite incense, the world of bootlegs, and the on-going saga of Eric Clapton's self-inflicted career and legacy damage. Bonbon Vodou "Fonker" Feat. Obi "No One" Cd No One (2021 Horizon) voir le clip  Onipa "Play It" Ft. Anthony Joseph "The Gift" CDThe Rich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives (Heavenly Sweetness 2021) Wayne Snow "Figurine" Cd Figurine (Wax Music 2021)    Douaa "Haditouni" (Habibi Funk 2021). It's easy to overlook a song like "Another Girl," as it sits on an album (Help!) with multiple major Beatles classics, and is featured in a film (also Help!)that's usually given the short straw when discussing the Fabs celluloid catalog. However, for something tossed off on a holiday, then captured basically in one take, it's a really fun, breezy pop rock tune. Musically (and visually in the film), it's essentially the blueprint for what The Monkees would come out with: an easy-bop-along pop tune with a catchy vocal and a fun beat. However, just below the surface a bit more sinister undertone of requiring love on Paul's terms, or he's going to go off to his next girl, because she's already here. Joining us this week is author/podcast host/teacher and Beatle-knowledge wellspring Ken Womack. At the end of 2020, he released John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life, a deep dive in the final year of Lennon's life and creative resurgence, and now in July 21, with co-author Jason Kruppa, we have All Things Must Pass Away: Harrison, Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs, which takes into the creations of George's solo debut, Clapton's Derek & The Dominos' Layla album, and the dynamics at play in their relationship. This release features Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. We also take a look at, 'The 27 Club.' "The 27 Club includes popular musicians who have died at age 27,often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse or violent means such as homicide, suicide, or transportation-related accidents. The deaths of several 27-year-old popular musicians between 1969 and 1971 (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison) led to the belief that deaths are more common at this age. Statistical studies have failed to find any unusual pattern of musician deaths at this age, comparing it to equally small increases at ages 25 and 32, with a 2011 BMJ study noting instead that young adult musicians have a higher death rate than the rest of the young adult population, concluding: "Fame may increase the risk of death among musicians, but this risk is not limited to age 27".The "club" has been repeatedly cited in music magazines, journals and the daily press. Several exhibitions have been devoted to the idea, as well as novels, films and stage plays. There have been many theories and speculations about the causes of such early deaths and their possible connections. Four years before the BMJ study was published, Cobain and Hendrix biographer Charles R. Cross wrote: "The number of musicians who died at 27 is truly remarkable by any standard. Escuchar audio

I'm joined by one of the very best Beatle authors, Ken Womack, and one of the very best Beatle podcasters, Jason Krupa, to discuss their brilliant new book 'All Things Must Pass Away - Harrison, Clapton and Other Assorted Love Songs'.   Ken and Jason paint a fascinating and enlightening picture of George Harrison and Eric Clapton in 1970, such a key year for both of them. George - dealing with the passing of his band, his relationship and his mother produces one of the great Beatle solo albums and Eric, bruised from the breakup of yet another band makes the tortured 'Layla'. Ken and Jason tell us how these albums came together, what happened next, and how this enduring friendship coped in the most trying of circumstances.

George Harrison and Eric Clapton embarked upon a singular personal and creative friendship that impacted rock's unfolding future in resounding and far-reaching ways. "All Things Must Pass Away: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs" will trace the emergence of their relationship from 1968 though the early 1970s. In particular, authors Womack and Kruppa devote close attention to the climax of Harrison and Clapton's shared musicianship—the November 1970 releases of 'All Things Must Pass', Harrison's powerful emancipatory statement in the wake of the Beatles, and 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs', Clapton's impassioned reimagining of his art via Derek and the Dominos, the band that he created from the wreckage of Cream and Blind Faith. "All Things Must Pass Away" will provide readers with a powerful overview of Harrison and Clapton's relationship, especially in terms of the ways their revolutionary musicianship and songwriting would eclipse rock music as an evolving genre. With 'All Things Must Pass' and 'Layla', Harrison and Clapton bequeathed twin recorded statements that advanced rock 'n' roll from a windswept 1960s idealism into the edgy new reality of the 1970s.Kenneth Womack is the author of "Maximum Volume" and "Sound Pictures", the two-volume biography of George Martin, as well as "The Beatles Encyclopedia" and "New Critical Perspectives on the Beatles". He delivers some 50 invited Beatles talks a year to audiences across the nation, while sharing his insights with media of all stripes, including National Public Radio, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Voice of America. The new album can be found on all streaming platforms, everywhere you get music. Give it a listen. Rob and I gave Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs a go, and boy, was it fun.
