This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief invites his baby brother Mitch (Little Feather) Grey to take a ride and sip on some Georgia whiskey. Mitch tells listeners how a Gary Stewart song was inspiration for the podcast's name. They discuss how Mitch recently moved to Georgia and how the Peach State has started to gain some respect for their whiskeys. They talk about their military experiences and life in the Hill Country of Texas. This has defined them both. They start the show by sipping on 13th Colony Distillery's Southern Bourbon whiskey. At 95 proof the Big Man would like to see a little more age on it. They then move onto Big Creek Distilling Company's wheated bourbon. A little caramel, caramel and lots of cereal notes that shine through. A beautiful craft whiskey to showcase Georgia's distillery scene. To start the second half they sip on some Legends 100 bourbon that is double barreled. Their unique filtration system takes the edge off the roughness off this rye bourbon. They finish off the show with ASW Distillery's Fiddler Georgia Heartwood. Its high wheat mash bill of 51% corn, 45% wheat and 4% malted barley is finished with the heartwood staves of Georgia Oaks. This is a bottle to be respected at 115.6 with loads of flavors like Caramel, maple, fresh orange, and sandalwood. Mitch says it is warm buttered waffles with syrup and a sweet river of caramel. This leads to it having a long finish. This ride on The Whiskey Trip showcases two brothers who have been around the world, served their nation, and came back better for it. Cheers!

Today's guest is a songwriting legend who helped shape the sound of American pop music. Originally setting out to be a recording star, this guest became one of the most respected pop songwriters within the Brill Building complex of the '60s. A struggling New Yorker, this writer's fortunes changed considerably when he met his future wife and songwriting partner, Ellie Greenwich, at a party in 1962. Within a short time of teaming up, the duo had an appointment at Don Kirshner's songwriting factory, New York City's famous Brill Building. Ushered into the business by Leiber & Stoller, this duo began writing and arranging for the groups signed to Phil Spector's Philles label. The smash hits “Da Do Ron Ron” and “Be My Baby” resulted from the time spent with Spector and, by 1964, the duo were an integral part of the staff at Leiber and Stoller's newly formed Redbird Records. Largely regarded by pop aficionados as the mecca for the “girl group” sound, the staff at Redbird, produced tightly crafted, musically sophisticated songs. The duo also penned “Leader of the Pack,” which became a number one hit. They continued to write hit records throughout the '60s, such as the seminal “River Deep, Mountain High” and the Beach Boys' 1969 hit “I Can Hear Music,” their songs changing with the times, but still retaining the essence of their earlier Brill Building days. After the marriage broke up, their creative partnership did as well and while Greenwich went on to become a session vocalist, our guest became a staff producer at A&M Records. Throughout the '70s, he worked with Neil Diamond, the Monkees, and Van Morrison, among other. Overall, this guest's credits—as a writer, co-writer, producer, or a combination—extend to a mix of different genres. His song "Out of Hand" by Gary Stewart was the longest-charted country record of its year. He also wrote many other country tunes, including "If It Ain't Love by Now," sung by Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius, who later won the Country Music Association's Best Country Duo award. One of this writer's most successful songs of all was Olivia Newton-John's 1974 worldwide smash hit "I Honestly Love You," which won "Song of the Year" at the American Music Awards, and, for Newton-John, GRAMMY Awards for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Performance. While mainly influential to the pop world, this writer's impact spans throughout all genres and all corners of the music industry. #AndTheWriterIs...

Imagine growing up in a little town in New Jersey, sharing Beatles albums with your older sister while your Mom is listening to Frank Sinatra and Herb Albert all the time. You find your place in the world being “the music guy” at school. Fold that into time working at the College radio station and then an entry level job at an upstart indie label called IRS Records where your first day on the job the Go Go's debut album hits #1 on the Album Chart. Later that week the Go Go's play Madison Square Garden. If this sounds at all familiar, then you're most likely this week's guest, Keith Altomare. Keith spent a good amount of time at IRS Records (owned by uber Manager Miles Copeland) in New York City working as the label's College Rep. His efforts helped propel REM's “Murmur” to being Number One on the College Radio charts. When IRS opened an office in Chicago, Keith opened up that territory before moving on to Los Angeles working as IRS National Sales Director. It was in the aisles of the Sunset Store where he met his wife Betsy who was then the Night Manager at Tower Records Sunset. In 1989 Keith Altomare moved over to Rhino Records where he started as National Sales Director and then eventually became the VP of Sales working with Tower Records as one of the primary accounts because “They were awesome people who were there because of the music.” Keith also tells us about working with Rhino Records legend Gary Stewart who passed away in 2019. Join us for an informative conversation with a long time friend of Tower Records, Keith Altomare.

Get 20% OFF @manscaped + Free Shipping with promo code ”EXPLICIT20” at MANSCAPED.com! #ad #manscapedpod In the 48th episode, I sit down with the best-selling author Gary Stewart! As a child, he was given up for adoption and had no contact with his birth parents until his late 30s. It was then that his birth mother reached out to him who told Stewart that she had him when she was just a teenager and had run away from home with Earl Van Best Jr., a 27-year-old rare book dealer. Gary decided to try and find his birth father, which led him down a rabbit hole, and ultimately came to the conclusion that his biological father could be the infamous ZODIAC KILLER! In his book, ”The Most Dangerous Animal of All,” written with true-crime writer Susan Mustafa, Stewart claims his father would go on to murder at least five people in northern California between 1968 and 1969. All the while, he would taunt the police as “The Zodiac” with letters and cryptograms sent to area newspapers. The self-proclaimed Zodiac Killer was directly linked to at least five murders in Northern California in 1968 and 1969 and may have been responsible for more. He taunted police and made threats through letters sent to area newspapers from 1969 to 1974, before abruptly ceasing communication. Despite intensive investigations, no one was ever arrested for the crimes and the case remains open. The mystery surrounding the murders has been the subject of numerous books and movies, including director David Fincher‘s acclaimed 2007 feature ”Zodiac”.
In the 10th episode of A Culture of Possibility, Arlene Goldbard talks with Gary Stewart, an artist and experimental sonic musician based in London. Arlene and Gary first met more than 30 years ago in a community arts project, and his work since that time has taken him to Africa, Latin America, the U.S., and numerous spaces in the white-box gallery and prestige festival worlds. In this episode, Gary explains how he came to do the work he does. He explains about Dub Morphology and their approach to their work. He and Arlene explore the possibilities and challenges of bringing the emergent, co-creative, egalitarian values of community-based arts practice into other types of creation and interaction, putting marginalized voices at the forefront, and the powerful results when kids in Brazilian favelas are trusted to master the full complexity of their art.
Gary Stewart is the founder of FounderTribes, a startup dedicated to diversity and matching businesses or entrepreneurs with the right investors and mentors to help them lead their business in the right direction.Impact Hustlers' Maiko and Gary actually go way back with them crossing paths in Wayra, a technological innovation hub that they both worked in. Even before that, Gary took up law in Yale and shortly after school, he went to Spain for some time off post-graduation. He also shares how his first entrepreneurial stint, which was in real estate, began. He briefly was a professor at the IE Business School in Madrid and was then recruited by Wayra to be its Managing Director, and off to the UK he went.Realizing that the corporate world was not for him nor was working for someone else, he wanted to chart his own path and at the same time diversify entrepreneurship, and so he created FounderTribes. For £9.99 a month, FounderTribes provides its clients with an impressive network of mentors and coaches who will then guide their clients and their companies to becoming investor-ready, by which time they will match them with the appropriate investors based on their stage and vertical.Compared to the US where Gary could easily find investors, he noticed the stark contrast in the UK where, despite him graduating from an Ivy League university, he experienced difficulty finding investors. This, he said, was partly due to race and also due to class. Thankfully, events like Pitch@Palace helped Gary meet the right people who were willing to give him a chance. He also gives great advice for young entrepreneurs who are just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey, and in 10 years, Gary says he envisions proportional representation, that everyone gets a fair chance regardless of race, gender, class, or whatever it may be. Gary's key lessons and quotes from this episode were:“I think there's a point when you realize, "I'm more interested in that bit and solving that challenge," than on the day-to-day of, ‘Can I help corporates to figure out what's going to be their next big product?'” (10:07)“In Spain, I feel like I was more investible than I am in the UK, because in Spain, I was an American first, and I think in the UK, I'm black first, and I didn't quite realize what that meant.” (18:34)“Because when they talk about gender diversity, usually, they're only talking about white women diversity. They're not talking about black women diversity, brown women diversity.” (22:23)“If we create these economies of scale, then the price of entry is a lot more accessible for everyone, which then democratizes entrepreneurship for everyone.” (29:58)“Remember, you're not the first person to blaze a trail, and you're not going to be the last, so if you're going to get into this game as a black person or brown person, know that it's about blazing a trail that requires a certain level of a thick skin, but just get on with it.” (35:50)“All you want is equity. You don't want overrepresentation. You just want everyone to have a fair shot.” (45:40)“FounderTribes is about race. It's about gender. It's about socio-economic. It's about geography. It's about all of the "isms" that keep us locked out.” (46:12)In this episode, we also talked about:Yale, Spain, and Gary's first business venture (2:41)How Gary got into entrepreneurship (6:22)What made Gary leave Wayra to start FounderTribes (8:09)Facts and numbers on funding according to gender and race (14:06)Finding investors in Europe vs. finding investors in AmeSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/impacthustlers)

Can FX repeat its American Crime Story success in the unscripted space? The Most Dangerous Animal Of All takes a big swing, but Gary Stewart may get stuck on the bench with me, my guest Eve Batey, and everyone else whose dads aren't the Zodiac. Would this have made a good feature just on the criminal drama that was Stewart's birth parents? What is the series trying to accomplish with the volte face in the fourth episode? And should I rename the podcast "Look, Nobody's Dad Did Anything"? But we're thrilled that Hustlers qualified for discussion in our Cold Case section, and no, not JUST because it's a crime that Jennifer Lopez didn't get an Oscar nom. What makes a good longread-to-film adaptation? Does Constance Wu make the perfect not-too-charismatic protagonist? And is Cardi B's character running on a pro-labor platform or what?
