At Lunar New Year, certain foods are particularly lucky to eat. Why? Because in Chinese, their names are puns on fortunate things. Damn, maybe noodles are all it takes to get me into puns after all... Professor Miranda Brown, cultural historian of China specialising in food and drink, explains the wordplay foods of new year, and why names are so resonant in Chinese. The Master of Demon Gorge: A Chinese History Podcast

The tea plant, Camellia sinensis, originated in borderlands of southwestern China and what is now Burma. For many centuries, though, people didn't consume tea the way we do it today.Drawing on work by Prof. Miranda Brown, this is the story of Lu Yu, the Tang Dynasty comic actor and author who taught the Chinese literati, and later the whole world, how to drink tea.

We sure had a great time talking with Miranda Brown and Brian Marchese for this episode! Miranda is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has not only her own recordings and performances in her dossier, but has played with many luminaries like AC Newman, The New Pornographers, Ryan Adams, Crooked Fences, The Lonesome Brothers, Eric Bachman, David Dondero, The Space Elevators, and Oh No Oh My. Brian also is a multi-instrumentalist, known widely for his drumming and, aside from his own solo project Sitting Next To Brian, is or has been a part of many great bands like The Fawns, School For The Dead, Gentle Hen, Lo-Fine, Goldwater, The Figments, The Mal Thursday Quintet, Our Wicked Hearts, and many more, and has played on records by such cool folks like Mark Mulcahy and Haunt. There's so much covered in here - it's a long one (but worth it!) - including sharing some memories and cool stories of their musical careers, and a lot more outside of just music. Songs featured during the conversation: Glacier - "Snow" Our Wicked Hearts - "I Should Go" Pineapples - "Early Waters" The Fawns - "Sun" Miranda Brown and band - "The Get Around" --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/meatforteacast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/meatforteacast/support

Michael and Carrie Kline, Talking Across the Lines

Remembering Blair Mountain was written and produced by Miranda Brown while interning with Talking Across the Lines. Brown weaves oral history interviews recorded by Michael and Carrie Kline and music from the The Blair Pathways Project, produced by Sara Lynch Thomason. The Klines' interviewees were marching to Blair to commemorate the original march of 1921 and save the location of the original Battle of Blair Mountain was in danger from mountaintop removal mining. As of today it has been preserved. Known as the Redneck Army for their red neckerchiefs, ten thousand miners marched 50 miles in late August to early September of 1921, striving to end to the violence of the mine guard system of Baldwin Felts detectives and political complicity. Please let us know what you think of this production. Thanks!

Miranda Brown‘s new book takes a sustained look at the role and significance of the medical fathers in the historiography of Chinese medicine. Paying careful attention to the ubiquity and persistence of figures including Bian Que, Chunyu Yi, Liu Xiang, Zhang Ji, and more, The Art of Medicine in Early China: The Ancient and Medieval Origins of a Modern Archive (Cambridge University Press, 2015) argues that the historiography of these figures reveals how early Chinese authors provided modern historians not only with the raw materials, but also the categories, genres, and objects of scholarly inquiry with which to study the past. Part 1 of the book considers representations of exemplary healers before the emergence of a category of medical history, looking closely at the rhetorical and historical contexts in which representations of these figures were produced. Part 2 of the book looks at the formation of medical histories in early China through the list of exemplary healers, and identifies a number of events that prompted responses that helped produce the present image of the early medical fathers. The result is a thoughtful account that will be of interest to readers interested in historiographical practices, as well as the histories of medicine and early China.
