From debut author Nick Blackburn, a therapist specialising in LGBTQ+ issues, comes The Reactor, a powerful new addition to the literature of grief and recovery. Following the death of his father Blackburn examines the nature of destruction, both natural and human-made, drawing on a repertoire of film, music and pop-culture. Olivia Laing has described The Reactor as ‘Beautiful, strange and completely compelling' and Helen Macdonald praises it as ‘One of the finest accounts of the mysterious workings of grief I have ever read.' This week we speak to author and psychoanalytic therapist, Nick Blackburn. In this special episode Nick shares how he his father died and how his grief and experiences brought him to write his first book, The Reactor . Nick shares insights into grief, working with those who have experienced it and how a few notes on his phone turned into a book about grief and repair. The Reactor is a memoir about absence and creative possibilities, assembled like the pieces of a puzzle. Through philosophy, music, fashion, psychology, art and film, Blackburn travels a vast panorama of ideas and characters to offer an entirely new exploration of grief. This is a book about looking for and finding chain reactions and human connection - a work of enduring fragmentary beauty.
Nick Blackburn is a therapist with a background in literature and the arts, whose work sits at the intersection of the complexities of the human mind and the written word. He speaks to Georgina Godwin about his new memoir, ‘The Reactor: A Book about Grief and Repair'. It is a reckoning with loss, told through fragments uniting the personal with philosophy, music, art and psychology.
In this week's ‘Deep Dive' episode, Chris is joined by Nick Blackburn, director at Cheltenham Town Football Club; Rachel Wearmouth, senior political correspondent at the Daily Mirror; and Alison Bender, broadcast journalist and football presenter. The conversation begins with guests sharing their personal experiences of watching the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium. They describe the tension, heartbreak and unlawful behaviour of fans - throwing bottles, climbing buildings, bribing stewards, and breaking into the stadium. The discussion moves on to debate who is responsible for the chaos which unfolded, and a lack of enforcement from police and authorities in the run up to the game. Guests highlight the shocking racial abuse which players have received on social media since, and how England fans booed during the Italian national anthem.Together they also consider how Boris Johnson vocalised his backing of the team; his failure to support players taking the knee, and whether it was inevitable that politics would enter the pitch.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at: www.wrightonthenail.fm

New Episode Out BROKEN CALLING METAL NEWCOMERS RELEASE ANTHEMIC NEW TRACK! REDEMPTION OUT NOW! ‘This is a brave record by a band who should make it big,' Devolution Magazine Rapidly rising metal quintet BROKEN CALLING are making themselves heard with their explosive new single, Redemption. The track, which is instantaneously furious, political, venomous, and contagious, has all the markings of an anthem for 2020. Be sure to hit up the single at https://sptfy.com/5htY and check out the video, here - https://youtu.be/CmDKVimFDEU BROKEN CALLING started life in 2019 and feature members hailing from London and Dover. Infused with a fiery passion, the fivesome are utterly determined to make sure their voice is heard. Having toured the UK and Europe in previous bands, they already have a wealth of live experience to bring to their blistering sound. BROKEN CALLING, consisting of guitarists Martin Osborne and Callum Green, along with James Falconer who provides stellar depth, as well as Jack Apella hammering on the drums and frontman Connor Snyder, who's guttural yet melodic vocals bring it all together, have everything in their locker to be major players in 2021. Having already supported established bands such as WSTR, Griever and Silent Descent, and breaking the attendance record for Facedown London, the southern metallers have now unleashed, Redemption, which is their first single since the release of their debut EP, From The Ashes. Redemption has already hit over 10,000 streams on Spotify and it's a no holds barred statement about how the government have failed the country during the current pandemic. The band state: “This is an anthem of anger for the people who have had enough”. The single is an undoubted banger, stocked with super stout and progressive riffs, razor edge percussion and earnest ferocity, all in the effort to deliver a severe blow to the senses. Full of their trademark rage, revulsion and noise, BROKEN CALLING scream from the highest point possible: “This is my Redemption, this is my time.” Band links below for Broken Calling can be found below www.facebook.com/BrokenCallingUK www.instagrxam.com/brokencalling https://open.spotify.com/artist/1yo3fHdwFrqm6sDvjhVm49?si=bkAgWzEoTyuzJqmXwO0j9Q My thoughts its clear to see why this track has already racked up 10,000 and more streams, people are angry they have had enough and this is Broken Calling, calling what I love about redemption is it's so simple and yet it's so prominent right now, regardless of what your political views are even if you don't agree with this messaged in this track remember you do have a voice it's your own. Its packed with riff energy and a natural bounce and passion, the chorus is one Broken Calling will have you having your fists up in the air and screaming back the chorus. A massive thumbs up from Setting The Tone go and check this out! Moving over to our next release of this Week we have a band I have not featured in a while the awesome Dead Reynolds and their new single voices OUT NOW ANIMATED ANTHEMIC ROCK CREW DETAIL NEW SINGLE & DEBUT ALBUM PLANS! Much revered hi-octane modern rockers, DEAD REYNOLDS, continue their ascension with the release of their hugely captivating new single, Voices, out now - https://youtu.be/PaneIktjm8 o. The infectious track has been lifted from the band's eagerly anticipated debut album, which lands in the Spring via Fort Records. Coming at you from East Anglia, DEAD REYNOLDS burst onto the UK scene at the end of 2018, and since then, the energetic quartet have amassed an army of fans and garnered the support from a slew of tastemakers. To date, DEAD REYNOLDS have received rampant support for their back catalogue, including last year's sophomore EP, Frontier, which racked up critical acclaim from Powerplay Magazine and Louder/Classic Rock Magazine. The release also received impressive backing from the likes of Maximum Volume Music, Moshville, Real Gone, Devils Gate Music, and The Punk Site, to name just a few. Besides acquiring extensive praise for their previous EPs, the band have also notched up airtime with Kerrang! TV and Scuzz TV. The fivesome have been repeatedly pioneered by Kerrang Radio's Johnny Doom, with Johnny consistently championing the band's singles and releases. Not only have DEAD REYNOLDS been regularly playlisted by Kerrang Radio, but the UK tunesmiths have also gained worldwide radio airplay across fifteen countries and have been played by more than two hundred radio stations. Live performances with everyone from Deaf Havana, Mallory Knox, and Mark Morriss (The Bluetones), as well as their own headline shows, have further served their growing cause. In 2020, DEAD REYNOLDS were also confirmed to play a series of prominent festivals: Hard Rock Hell, VW White Noise, Reapham Fest, Stamford Riverside, and Hevy Music Fest; however, all events were cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. The band's reach has certainly been impressive, and their Spotify streaming numbers demonstrate their growth (Dead Reynolds' last EP, Frontier, is up to 100k plays and counting). With a strong pedigree in place, it's now time for DEAD REYNOLDS to break out on a larger scale, and the UK alt-rockers have the ammunition to do so. The band will release their debut album this Spring, alongside a Rockumentary book captured by world renowned Rock photographer, Nick Elliott. DEAD REYNOLDS are also primed to drop their explosive new single, Voices. The track and album explore a fresh approach to song writing for the band, revealing a unique and contemporary sound with a greater emphasis on production, thanks to the influence of long-time producer and friend Jack Murphy. Guitarist and Vocalist, Dom Greenwood comments: “This is a direction we have wanted to go for some time, to make the sound a bit more epic, but still retain the power we love from pop punk and alternative rock. It's still Dead Reynolds, but with a modern twist.” With plans to widely tour the album from the Summer of 2021, DEAD REYNOLDS are ripe to rise and rise. Band links can be found for Dead Reynolds below www.facebook.com/DeadReynolds/ www.instagram.com/dead_reynolds/ www.twitter.com/dead_reynolds https://open.spotify.com/artist/7pAkErb3vLY5dgghk9zmqf my thoughts Dead Reynolds voices has a lot happening on this track there are so many different sounds that are layered within this track, there is a natural energy and flow to Voices, it has a natural arena feel to it, with a natural hook in the chorus guitars that punch the way through a fantastic mix of melody and power and great production, I can't wait to see what Dead Reynolds do in 2021. for fans of like Malloy Knox, Bring Me the horizon moving over to our next single this week to our last single this week and the return of a band who we are happy to have back The Hot One Two who have just released their new single Playing with fire link is here youtube.com/watch?v=FYjec4h3R1k&feature=youtu.be Brit rockers The Hot One Two Aka T.H.O.T are back with their new single Rolling Stone delivering a riffy, hook heavy slab of rock n roll to the listener.
